Shinwell will get another call on prom night...No shortage of hot button issues...aboriginal rights, global warming, PETA type activism, human trafficking...Trainspotting Sherlock continuity...

The entire Shinwell plot is completely disconnected from the rest of the show.  The entire series, really.  I don't necessarily dislike Shinwell but every time he is in on screen I feel like I'm watching some weird spinoff show.  Either bring him into the show properly or get rid of him.

Wow, even by this shows standards, that was a LOT of twists and turns. We went from a murdered gamer who was killed while live streaming, to the cut throat of world of professional gaming, to prostitution, to human trafficking, to saving the seals, to selfies, to native rights in Canada, to global warming, to more native rights, to sketchy lawyers. Again, there HAD to be an easier way to accomplish your goals then beating a random guy to death online. I do appreciate that, when the guy got clobbered online, people actually altered the authorities, and we didn't get a "people just watch violence and don't do anything" story. I was kind of disappointed be left the gamer stuff behind. Its an interesting sub culture that they could have done decently. At least better than that episode of Law and Order SVU that got "topical" by mixing Gamer Gate and terrorism (because internet trolls frequently publically kidnap and rape female gamers! Like all the time!), the combination we all needed.

The Shinwell plot was so completely disconnected to the rest of the show, it felt like I had accidently just changed the channel. I like Shinwell, but he has served his purpose on the show. Its time to move on. And this week was especially boring. It had NOTHING to do with Joan and Sherlock, and the resolution was pretty lame. And I thought his daughter was kind of shitty. Yeah Shimwell was apparently a crappy druggie dad, and she's just a kid who was in trouble through no fault of her own, but still, holy crap girl, you asked your dad to kill a guy for you after seeing him for the first time in years, and he almost did it! I think maybe you can let him walk you home, or get coffee with him. But, again, I don't really care.

I like that the famous guest star had almost nothing to do with the killing, and that almost was rather tangential.  (I'm referring of course to Kathy Najimy.)

I actually thought that she told him to go away because he didn't kill the guy, if he had, I think she would have kept up the relationship.

Jonny Lee Miller looks good bald.

I'm not thrilled with the look myself, does anyone know why IRL he did it? Or was it really just for the show?

I think Shinwell was going to get dismissed by his daughter either way, if he fell back to old behaviors or - as he did instead - found a way to stay on the "straight and narrow." I can't imagine she would have wanted anything to do with him for killing a kid. She would have needed to distance herself as if she had no part in it. Perhaps she'd been hoping he would have killed the kid, that way she could have a reason to stay away from Shinwell. But because he fixed the situation by arranging a deal instead, she had to dismiss him to his face. Pretty cold, but at the same time, she hasn't had a father all these years because of the life he used to lead, so I can understand a little bit why she still doesn't see him as true family. I still felt bad for Shinwell, though.

He's filming Trainspotting 2.

Filming for T2 happened last summer before production for season 6 commenced and JLM sported Sick Boy's  signature white hair. The movie premiered last month in Britain. It was pretty obvious in the first episodes of this season that JLM's hair was dyed back to something close to his natural color. Maybe he got tired of the elaborate combing needed to cover his growing bald spots and decided to embrace the hairless look.

I'd say that Christine Taylor (The ultimate villain) is at least as famous or more famous than Kathy Najimy.  She's been in a bunch of stuff.

I wondered if maybe he had to shave it to film pickups for Trainspotting, but if he wasn't bald in the movie then there goes that theory. I personally think it's a terrible look on him, and I hope his hair grows quick! Or he wears lots of hats.

This ep fell flat a little flat for me I'm afraid. Lots of twists and turns as noted above, but... eh. Not much focus or development with our main characters, which is really what makes me watch this show. Seems like there's less and less of that this season, which is a bummer.

So why no new ep next week, CBS? They must be taking their scheduling cues from the idiots at Fox or NBC.

Totally agree! I love JLM, but I miss his Sherlock "quirkiness". Even Joan seems a bit "checked out" this season.  The addition of Shinwell added absolutely nothing. I would much rather have the show focus more on Det Bell or Gregson. I think this is the last season. It's not doing well in the ratings and the writing isn't what it used to be.

Yup, I knew after the first short scene of Kathy Najimy and Christine Taylor at the precinct that Christine Taylor was going to end up the bad guy because you don't bring in someone like that to play a lawyer with only a few lines! Well, at least not on this show. On The Good Wife, yes.

Maybe I'm out of it then definitely possible!!), but I've never seen Christine Taylor in anything, so to me she was a random extra.

ETA:  I just looked her up, and the only shows I've ever seen her in are generally one episode guest spots, so nothing that would have stood out.  Her filmography is pretty much movies I would pay money not to have to see, so I guess she's famous to other people, but I would never have recognized her.

The Shinwell scenes are now so disconnected that it's possible to FF them altogether. Whether they are good or bad doesn't matter, they're effectively a separate show.

See, I thought that was smart. The show cast two famous people so I knew it would end up being one of them, but which one? That was up in the air for a while at least.

This is a huge issue for me this season. Joan and Sherlock don't really have any big plots or character development (probably the closest is the Over a Barrel episode)moments or quirks, because they spend their extra time not with the case on Shinwell, who has nothing to do with anything. I understand them wanting to have more than two characters to be developed, but they already have Bell and Gregson if they wanted more time away from Joan and Sherlock. If they must give us more subplots with other characters, we already know and care them, and their plots could actually be connected with the show. Again, its not that I don't like Shinwell as a character, I just don't understand what his point here is.

I don't get why the show keeps trying to make Shinwell happen either. Maybe they are hoping for a spin-off? Good luck with that.

I'll try to refrain from debating the merits of their respective careers; suffice it to say, Najimy has been around a lot longer and has more credits to her name. That said, I couldn't figure out why either one of them accepted such a small role on a show like this.

This episode was lacking the usual humor. It also missed the opportunity for the other characters to react to Sherlock's hair, or lack thereof. Personally JLM's hair has always been something of a tragedy but the bald look doesn't really do him any favors either. He's too skinny and he has somewhat of an elongated cranium.

I liked the episode.

The actor I recognized the most was the one who ran the gaming training house and had been hiring prostitutes for his team. And even though he's the one I thought was the most famous, I don't know his name!

I hate Bell's haircut.

Usually I like shaved heads (I had one for a while myself), but I don't really think it flatters JLM. I have no opinion about his usual hair, having never noticed it one way or the other. I do know from experience that a shaved head grows back really fast, so it shouldn't last long unless they keep shaving it.

I usually watch with my husband but he was home sick yesterday and watched while I was working.  I am angry with him for not warning me about a Shinwell sighting.  I like advanced notice so I can do calisthenics on my eyeballs to get them ready for all the rolling they do when Shinwell is on screen.

Otherwise, I liked the case and found it interesting.  I was actually sad about OG's death because that character was rather charming.

This was an episode full of "Hey it's that actor/actress!" and...not much else.  I watch the show.  Not religiously but enough where I think JLM and Lucy Liu are great together.  This Shinwell business is really putting me to sleep as he's simply not interesting or engaging me enough.  Also indirectly, taking too much of Clyde's screen time!

If it helps you, "Dodgeball" "Zoolander" and Marcia Brady in the Brady Bunch movies are probably her standout roles.

I vote nay on bald Jonny.

OTOH, this was the first episode in which I found Shinwell appealing. Maybe it was because they had him in more well lit scenes instead of sinister darkness. The last shot of him standing forlornly alone got to me.

I absolutely agree we need more Clyde!

As for your other point--that's exactly why I've never heard of her.

So, in typical Elementary fashion, the episode quickly goes from "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Dead Pro Gamer", to sex trafficking, prostitution, a real-life Pretty Woman situation, and then it all ends up being about global warming.   Yep, that checks out!  Totally pegged the lawyer, since they wouldn't bother getting Christine Taylor to only say a few "lawyerims."  Sure, she might not be an A-lister, but being Ben Stiller's wife (and Marcia Brady in the Brady Bunch films) has to count for something!

I did like seeing good old Ando from Heroes too.  At least he wasn't involved with the killing, even if he apparently is OK with hiring prostitutes that he knows are likely suffering, just to appease a bunch of gamers.  What would Hiro, think?!

Was bored with all of Shinwell's stuff involving his daughter who is kind of unlikable.  Again, I really love Nelsan Ellis, and I don't even really hate the character, but he just doesn't have a spark to him.  Even when, say, Kitty could be obnoxious, I at least was paying attention to her and her ongoing stories/arcs.

Surprisingly, I pretty use to Bald Sherlock.  Jonny Lee Miller seems to have the right head shape to pull that off.

Was that a reappearance of Joan's long black coat with the buttons? It's truly gorgeous and emphasizes her slim figure. I noticed that she didn't even have to unbutton it when she sat down. Joan's clothes are almosy always highly covetable, but the coat porn on this show is out of this world.

Wow, Shinwell's daughter turned out to be a little bitch.  "I want nothing to do with you because you're a criminal.  Oh wait, I'm in need of a criminal, so now I'll talk to you and demand your help.  No, wait, you're a criminal, so now I want nothing to do with you again.  Until I need something else."  I was really hoping he would say something as she was walking away from him.

I was so pleased to see James Kyson Lee. Ando was one of my favorites on Heroes. I thought it was a good choice to have three recognizable actors with motives (though I guess we didn't know Christine Taylor's motive until the end).

I agree that the Shinwell story is kind of boring and out of place. Though that forlorn shot of him after his daughter ditched him did move me.

Just wanted to point out that Sherlock identifying a car from the smell of motor oil and some hubcap marks is completely in line with the original character, who could identify cigarettes brands from the ash they made and all the different types of mud splashes London neighborhoods could produce. Sherlock was always written as someone who studied weird, esoteric and obscure stuff he thought might help him in his work.

Movie Sherlock [Game Of Shadows] deduced that the sniper smoked tobacco sourced from Afghanistan...which allowed Watson to identify Moran as the shooter.
