Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp

One minute in, I see Joy is not aware that you should support an infant's head when picking him up.

eta:  In a Q & A, Joy was asked if she'd have more babies, and she said she and Austin have talked about having four or five kids, but they're not sure.  But she says she doesn't feel 'done' yet and could have another one or two.

Had super poor sleep last night. I dreamt my niece wouldn't let me leave until she gave birth. Bizarrely, at one point in the dream my niece turned into Joy. I didn't notice until Austin showed up with a pineapple. I was like, what and turned to my 'niece' and she was Joy.

Anyway Joy gave birth in a small row boat.  Austin, Giddy and Evie watched from their boat. And oh, the baby was named Levi.

They should have went with Levi - only four letters to remember.

Oh I forgot to mention... Joy/niece wanted a water birth. Yup, that's why we were in boats - on the water.

These fundie dreams can be weird. I had one a few months ago that I was going to share, but never got around to it. I think it may actually have been about Timbits and his intended, but, anyway, there was a conversation going on about the wedding night, and what would be expected, and how to know what to do. A couple of married sisters were there, trying to help explain, but, if course, there was little to nothing that they were actually permitted to talk about. So one said, "well, first you just kiss", and the second one added, "with minimal clothing". And the first agreed that the "minimal clothing" was key, and then, basically, "it just sort of happens". So enlightening. I'm not sure the dream was far off the mark, either.

Joy looks so much more mature in this photo. For the record I’m not saying she’s looks “old”, or anything like that (she’s very pretty), but she looks like a woman not a girl. I don’t think I’ve seen her wear prints so I’m a little surprised! It’s a cute top.

The baby looks like Gideon.

From the looks of the shoulders and rolled up sleeves, I'm guessing Joy is wearing Austin's shirt.

That is the tiniest exam room I've ever seen.

I couldn’t see Austin wearing anything like this. It’s also pretty short to be a men’s shirt (Joy isn’t tall). Dropped shoulders are very common now.

And 0% probability to get an adequate education, develop critical thinking skills, learn to navigate the real world while maintaining his faith, or make his own choices. The chunker is very cute though.

But since he's a boy, he'll have more opportunities than a girl would.  He is a cutie pie. Joy looks really good here.

OMG just send him to school. Joy is useless.

He'd be in SPED classes. I'm sure getting the dyslexia diagnosis was bad enough. Maybe the people who tested him thought he would get tutoring on TOP of regular school in order to read in 6 months?

Joy sure as hell won't help. They got him tested 2 years ago, then did nothing until now. That kid is already so far behind where a normal kid entering kinder is (I teach kindergarten). Joy said he mixes up his ABC's and has trouble counting to 20!

Yep, we all saw how bad Giddy's speach was and after one test, Joy pretty much ignored it. Like you said, he's so far behind and it's sad to think how far he could be if he had parents that cared and believed in the school system and all the teachers that could help him.

Poor Giddy he has auditory processing disorder and dyslexia? And has terrible allergies and needs glasses. And worse of all he has Joy and Austin - the parents who need to advocate for him and care for him. The parents who couldn't even buy him the correct size of eyeglasses.

I worked/watched kids for 30 years. I took better care of those kids that Joy and Austin have. I looked out for them and when I didn't see something right, the parents knew instantly. If they noticed something first, we all worked together with their schools to help them.

These people are so clueless. What's even worse, is that Joy will just keep having kids and make no time to help the ones she already has. None of them stand a chance.

Poor kid, he has a lot going on.  I wonder how long he will get this tutoring before Joy and Austin get bored with it or Joy gets knocked up again and they go back to ignoring Gideon's issues.  If he were in school, he would get the help he needed.  They should have taken steps back when it was clear he had a speech delay.  I feel bad for him, because I am not sure that just two day a week tutoring is going to help get him up to speed.

This.  Sure, two days a week of therapy for dyslexia and speech delays is only the start of what he needs.  It needs to be accompanied by parental involvement and work with him.  Undoubtedly, the instructors working with Gideon will give Joy and Austin a program to follow with him at home.  And they will be expected to set aside time, probably daily, at least several days a week; to work with him and reinforce the therapy he is receiving from the specialists.  And I don't see either Joy or Austin following the road map they're given and instead, blowing off his home work after a few sessions and eventually dropping the therapy altogether because 'it's not helping'.

I'm terribly sad that Joy and Austin probably won't understand that a "stick the kid in front of the iPad" homeschooling app is probably never going to be the right choice for Gideon (I mean, I would argue that it's not the right choice for any kid to use exclusively, but Giddy's ld makes it worse). The only good thing about those programs is that they usually have audio to go along with the text, which is really useful for dyslexia, but otherwise I think it's going to hurt him, especially since I share other people's doubts that Joy or Austin will give him support longterm.

I didn't watch the video, but I am curious about what motivated them to get him evaluated.  His issues must have been pretty glaring to get through to them.  Michelle claimed that some of Joy's siblings had learning difficulties which she solved by dumping them on another sibling.  Supposedly this was a better solution because she claimed that a public school would just "label" them.  She had no clue that they could get real help in a school setting.

Joy said he was mixing up numbers and letters. She also elaborated that there was dyslexia on both sides of the family and that it's genetic.

It's a grim thought, but I actually think social media/influencing might be these kids' saving grace. Joy needs to generate content, and she knows what type of content gets the most clicks. I don't agree with exploiting their children to generate content, but hopefully some good will come out it, as the kids will have access to services they wouldn't have otherwise explored, had it not been for youtube clicks.

my 11 YO Grandson has a type of processing disorder relating to math and social cues/situations...He is very mildly aspergers ...but he has an IQ of 140...and no one knew he had any schooling issues until the end of fifth grade...because he also has an idactic ( I think that is the spelling) and memorized everything...so my daughter had him tested...700$ for that and then counseling every monday through the summer at 200$ an hour....and he goes to a very good private school.---and will have a private math tutor a few times a week after school.....all that to say...poor Gid...He needs much more than tutoring 2x a week.

Joy put out her latest video.  She made a big deal about Austin and Gideon going camping along with others, and it turns out Austin didn't take much footage.  So Joy's 12-minute video (whose title is Gideon's Huge Suprise, i.e. camping) contained less than a minute of camping footage.  The conversation afterwards where they discuss it is pretty telling:  Joy pretending not to mind that Austin came back with hardly any footage and Austin sarcastically saying maybe they should do another camping trip so there can be footage: "I thought we'd have to re-do the whole camping trip--everybody go put your dirty clothes back on--we have to do this again."  Another highlight:  Joy getting a $7.00 carwash during the rain because the kids like to go through a carwash.

God forbid Austin take his son camping and just concentrate on spending time with him instead of filming everything and exploiting him for cash. Suck it, Joy.

She really shouldn't be putting out a weekly video. There's no there there.

This pretty much describes most of the Joy's videos I have seen.  It's eons of her talking about things they are going to do or did do while either driving or walking around with her phone and barely any footage of the actual activities she talks about.  And after watching some of her waking around with her phone, I need a dramamine.

Austin seems to underestimate how tiring it is to be in charge of 3 kids 5 and under. The way he treated Joy when he grilled her about the pastor's message was demeaning.
