Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

You guys were great last night!  Free Jinger was commenting live and was floored by all the posts that they couldn't explain.  Everything from here on out is from Free Jinger.  Italicized quotes are from the RU chat:

Awesome. So, are you guys going to let Free Jinger know who you are? Or do you figure there must be overlapping members, so someone will put it together eventually.

We don’t even have any idea if they are incompatible. Plenty of men (and women) who have previously slept with wives or longterm partners before making a commitment cheat, regularly, just because they can. They may be problems in each individual relationship that outsiders don’t see but, it’s not necessarily indicative of a fulfilment the other partner can’t meet (or is even aware of) or a specific problem.

True; I didn't mean to claim that J & A ARE incompatible, or that if they were, it would justify cheating. I was sort of frothing at the mouth with indignation about Anna's being interrogated by Jim Boob and his always-willing receptacle. (I am sorry to call her that, but hey, she advertises it.)

I was probably not fully coherent. I should have clarified that I was picking incompatibility as a possible issue with J & A, and feeling grumpy that, rather than work on it or whatever the real problem is, they assume the answer is for Anna to uncross her legs. Oh, and tell JB & M all the gory details. No doubt that old perv Bill Gothard came up with that approach.

I need some coffee.

PS, I laughed till I cried over the livestream chat. I hope to jump in next week. PTV! Er, PTL!

I will be Cyn N. DeCamp.

Is there some reason Free Jinger's ad provider is serving me up termite control and monument sellers in my area or are they trying to tell me something?

eta The best thing about that picture, JMO, is that someone left their charger plugged in behind bondage guy's chair.

Hmm maybe Tammy Faye Bakeoff will make an appearance next week. I need to join in the fun!

Still laughing as to how this is going to cure Josh!?!?!?!?!

Tammy Faye Bakker died several years ago of colon cancer.

I just want to know if Josh is actually at RU or has made an escape.

Another really sucky thing about Smuggar's sins is the fact that Anna will not be the only one whose mind is screwed with. Now I wonder if Jill, Jessa, the Bates' girls, and even Michelle are thinking "What don't I know about MY husband." They might also be getting all technology out of the house or heavily passworded!

I suspect Josh is there, but wants to leave --- which is why the first testimony of the randomly (yeah, right) selected captive shared how he wanted to leave too and how wanting to leave was normal, but staying is worth it.

Anybody following the chat? There's a poster called J'Aja Smithson!

Yes! What is the J'Aja bit do you think? A play on the JA Josh and Anna thing?

Not sure - been trying to figure out that.

Okay, who's Faree Ginger?????

And I assume "Jenna James" is supposed to be Jenna Jameson...

Jenna James – Music is beautiful and reminds me of Erin Bates on piano.

OK, Jenna James and Faree Ginger have GOT to be somebody's socks working in unison -- they are both mocking the RU commenter and he doesn't even realize it --

ETA: Whoever this is is cracking me up. Out yourself!

leighdear – Whomever is playing has a distinctive sound.

Jenna James – Music is beautiful and reminds me of Erin Bates on piano.

Faree Ginger – Amen!

J'Aja Smithson – Audio perfect now! :)

Jenna James – Amen!

North Love Ministries – His name is Cisco

Faree Ginger – I thought that his name was Cisco too. Now I am confused. Whoever he is, he was very inspiring. Praise the Lord.

Jenna James – Oh sorry. I thought the speakers name was Cisco. Bless his heart whatever the name.

North Love Ministries – Faree Ginger -

J'Aja Smithson – I love that metaphor, Faree! Bless you!

Faree Ginger – Cisco was a router sending me the word of the Lord. Amen!

Jenna James – Thank you Cisco. You blessed my heart. Amen brother!

Faree Ginger – This song reminds me of Send in the Clowns, but without the secular nonsense. Praise the Lord for something so wonderful.

the poster "leighdear"- what is that a reference to?

I thought she might be for real. She actually gave the name of a hymn...

Tracy Lourdes just joined the chat.

And SewSumi!

And now Danica has chimed in!

Zack Miri has joined.

Tracy Lourdes – My preacher wears shoes. Not NIKEs.

Jemima Jobs – Satan has erected many fortresses in the hearts of those here tonight. God bless their strength to change.

Tracy Lourdes – Oh, you mean another Tracy.

Zack Miri – The power of the Lord is in this testimony! PTL!

Tracy Lourdes – Get thee behind me, Satan. And don't push!

Jemima Jobs – Praise the Lord for fathers

Muffy – Faree and I share an old friend Tracy who had many, many burdens. She has found freedom.

Danica D'hillonsen – Amen! Amen! Let the power of Christ in my life!

Faree Ginger – Freedom doesn't come from governments. It comes from Christ!

J'Aja Smithson – The Power of Christ IS a wonderful thing!

To be fair, the preacher is the one who mentioned bondage first, but Jenna, D'aja and Danica sure ran with that. And NIKES!

J'Aja Smithson – Praise God leighdear!

Zack Miri – If your hand offend you...that is one of the hard sayings.

leighdear – I just got a job.

Tracy Lourdes – GoFundMe is an enormous help when you don't have a job.

Jemima Jobs – Amen. I struggled with consumer debt until I discovered the Financial Freedom Seminars.

Danica D'hillonsen – Thank you, thank you! This is moving me to tears. I'm not always believed in my struggles.

Faree Ginger – I like how they address financial burdens in this ministry. Just recently I prayed about a $1,500 debt that I owed and the Lord helped me find a way to just have to pay part of that debt.

Danica D'hillonsen – I give myself to God. No other but God. And his son J

Danica D'hillonsen – Please let him show himself to me!

Zack Miri – Pray for Jesus to expose himself to you, Muffy.

Muffy – My hand so often offends me when I am online.

Tracy Lourdes – When we sin, we pray, and then try not to repeat.

Edward – You must take His yoke upon you sister, Matthew 11:28-30

I still can't believe that the Livestream moderator was so clueless.

They were probably thrilled that so many people were being saved. PTL! Go deeper... into grace! Let Jesus expose himself to you! He is the safe word from bondage! AMEN! AMEN!

I just realized that I sat through a church service for the first time since I was a teenager.  I may be back next week, though, if it is as inspiring as this one was!

Hopefully next week it will be longer. And deeper. And with more bondage.

Someone posted that the guy was a slave to food or addicted to food -- and he went right away into how he, after an addiction to alcohol and marijuana, turned to food.  So, I think he either had the livestream up on a large monitor and could see it or he had an ear piece and another UAer would tell him what was being posted.  When people would post about the poor sound quality, they worked right away to remedy it.

I tried to be careful with my comments.  I didn't want to get blocked.  Also, the lord laid upon my heart to purpose to cook dinner during the broadcast.

I had remembered from last week's service that the big guy had an issue with food.  This week we learned that alcohol was his gateway drug to food addiction.  Okay, I'm packing a spare 60 lbs. myself.  But if they are going to use him as an example of how well the program works, they had better say what he's lost.  He does not look like the after photo most people would want to see.  If he hadn't claimed he was using the program to help with over eating, I wouldn't think twice about his size.  He's just an odd choice for a show pony.

So, I went to bed early - did they seriously demonstrate preacher-on-man bondage on the altar at sex addict / ex-gay rehab?

We had a hymn about struggling to serve your master, speaker-on-man bondage and teams of people carrying luggage (the best part of which was that they clearly weren't told what to do with it when they took it off stage - so we also had people standing around holding empty suitcases while looking like fools).  It's not just a service; it's a performance.

I did notice the final speaker upped his game this week.  Last week he was a rambling mess that kept kept repeating the same thing.  This week he went "deeper".  As he told us, to go deeper he had to go "longer".  We begged for him to go deeper and longer - he did not disappoint.

As long as we don't directly attack them, I think they are so happy for the additional visibility for their program.  They feel we will be touched by their words.  Someone is going to convert!  (The things we'll do for a Smuggar sighting.)

I feel it is my jurisdiction to participate in the live stream chat room.  I need to know more about bondage.

There's spots the camera doesn't see: rear left and rear right, I can see Josh the "one man AV club" sitting there. The balding 'Jared from subway' looking guy, who seems to run the show, doesn't seem to know or care about the cameras. He spent the "prayer" part in the first 30 minutes face-palmed, and occasionally massaging his temples and twirling his glasses around and around.

Be careful, you may unwittingly be "attending" a church service.

I tried to endure the livestream, but my lust for alcohol and throwing the tennis ball for my dogs drove me outside instead. I did, however, view part of the archived livestream, looking to see if the seventh (?) row guy in the black shirt was Josh. It isn't. :(((  Go to 23:11 when everyone turns to shake hands with their neighbor; you can see it's not him.

do think, however, we might have a contender with the guy wearing the burgundy shirt to the far left in the sixth (?) row (the row, whatever its number, that's directly in front of the black-shirted man). Check out the new possibility in profile during the same "handshake." He does look a little thin (and maybe a little too short) to be Josh - but then again, maybe all the recent stress has put our Dough Boy off his feed.

On the other hand, I really doubt Josh, even if he's at RU, is going to allow himself to be identified in any livestream. If I were him, I'd be hustling to be the first in the group to get to that church every Friday, just so I could position myself as off-camera as I could. I doubt that even his level of hubris would make him want to get back in the public eye this way.

Josh got in so much trouble, when all he was trying to do was put the "action" in FRCAction. Huzza huzza.

Maybe they charge families extra for their afflicted loved ones to sit in the less embarrassing spots out of reach of the livestream camera. Gotta monetize where you can. Grease that palm, baby.

These guys are amateurs compared to the crap that "The Great Mother Fucker" (AKA Iyanla Van Zant)  & Rhonda on the infamous Starting Over did to their "inmates" in the guise of psychotherapy via arts and crafts. That thread on TwoP was epic and anyone who watched that show or read that thread knows EXACTLY what I am talking about. These RU people could learn a thing or two from some of the classic therapeutic beat downs like putting a lady in the "jail" and tying someone up and having them have to break out of their chains, and screaming and crying into a mirror to confront yourself (I am sure that I am forgetting good ones too). Part of the process was to have someone in hysterical tears close to a psychotic breakdown in order "heal". And if that didn't work, a glitter and glue craft project would cure all. Those were good times.

I just have to personally thank you for this one. IT is simply PRICELESS

But it's so sad for the poor guy in the chair, to me.

I hate that the people in this faux-recovery/bullshit-o-rama have their struggles and "treatment" livestreamed on the net. As a professional and a human, I'm a stickler for privacy rights.

I wonder how many of RU's clients are there not of their own choice, but because of parental or spousal or church-pressures? Atoning for their "sins"? "Praying the gay away," or repenting for looking at Playboy, or watching porn on pay-for-view or the net, for example.

Imagine how godawful it must be to be imprisoned in such a place, with no professionals to help, to talk to. Then imagine the Friday night marathons of bullshit. Topped by livestreaming their shame, their guilt, their confinement and hopelessness, at the hands of people who have their own demons and no idea wth they are doing to the souls entrusted to them. The blind leading the blind.

Drives me crazy.

I never thought I'd feel a compassion for Josh Duggar, but, man, if he's really sitting at RU, I have nothing BUT compassion for that small-minded PITA loser, bigot. He is toast.

It really is a horror story. Because JMO if there was something there to save, Josh needs to let go of not just his heedless narcissism but his fairly obvious insecurity and self-loathing (Ann Lamott said that the central message of her addiction was "I am the piece of shit the universe revolves around," and I see a lot of that in Josh).

The problem is, I don't get the feeling these people want that. I think they want him to be a happy narcissist for Christ, who stays broken because he's easier to control that way. And the door out is closed now, over something his daddy and all his daddy's very powerful friends taught him in every way that matters didn't really matter.

It's like An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. The whole escape to DC and adulthood and respect was a dream he had while his brain was catching up to how screwed he is.

I feel sympathy and compassion for individuals attempting to take control of their lives and get assistance with their problems, especially younger folks.

However, the people in this program are all grown adults.  There are no children or teens there.  They are attending of their own free will, with no state or court mandated requirements.  No entity is forcing them to be there.  They have at least $7,500 to spend and 6 MONTHS of free time to devote to this "treatment" program.  They all know there are ZERO licensed therapists or counselors and ZERO medical personnel there to assist in their "recovery", so there is no detoxing for the "addicts".

They know what this place is.  And based on the rules & regulations we've seen, they have no expectation of personal privacy during their "treatment".  They signed that all away with they turned over their cash to these charlatans.

I absolutely believe that when individuals go into treatment and their privacy is important to them, there are programs for them.  But it's definitely not available with this dog-and-pony show.

I will say that I doubt anyone -- anyone -- is there by their own choice. I would guess that family members were willing to pony up $7500 to get these people out of the house, and the "patients" had no other options. It is my understanding that most of them are drug addicts, and drug addicts often have no jobs, and no permanent address, so there is no reason that they can't be away for 6 months.

I mentioned this before -- but I was thinking about this again today -- this is a punishment center, not a treatment center as we might think of it. Josh (and probably most of the others) were sent here as a punishment for their sins. It's supposed to be degrading and humiliating. What's wrong with them is not a medical condition, or a mental illness, it is pride. They are supposed to be humbled, and forced to crawl on their knees to beg Jesus for forgiveness -- that's the point.

Gothard doesn't believe in the type of counseling or treatment that we would associate with any kind of addiction treatment facility. I was thinking about the abuse special today, and I could imagine JB telling J'chelle and the girls, "just go and nod your head at all the secular bs. We have to do this to get our show back." I would imagine that part of the point in sending Josh away was the same thing.

cmr2014...yes, very astute. I agree that RU is a punishment program and not a rehab-treatment center. I believe RU works hard to instill a certain self-loathing, topped with a huge dollop of shame. How can that mindset work long-term? It can't. Well, unless the graduate-RUs are Ted Bundy or Joel Rifkin.

The Friday night livestream is the icing on the cake. Public ridicule as a form of rebuke and shame. Tough "love." What inspires RU to go that far? Only thing I can think of is that the Friday night net show is for the referring parents, spouses, churches to look in on and to make sure they're getting their $7,500 worth.

So I read tonight that Anna is expected to make an appearance at Amy's wedding tomorrow and that there will be dancing and alcohol. Maybe Anna can get snockered and forget just for a few hours how screwed up things are.

I'm sure JB and Co. will close ranks around Anna but perhaps she'll sneak off to the bathroom, where she will bump into a modern gal who will tell her to leave the piece of crap she married.

I realized that I actually would watch a "Duggar" show if given the chance. One where Anna walks away and rebuilds her life with her kids:

Anna Plus Four - Josh Out the Door

Anna Plus Four - No More Manwhore
Anna's Little Army - Without Mr. Smarmy

The more I think about her the worse I feel.  She is probably surrounded by Duggar prayer that centers on Josh so he is the focus instead of her. I bet she has sister girls there to help with the children but NOT talk to her about Josh and how she is feeling ... and this is probably the first time she's been away from Josh for longer than a day or two. I mean ... she did go from being surrounded by her family to leaving and cleaving to her husband --- such as he is. I dunno. I just ache for her because SHE is the only one that actually matters in all of this mess (and his sex abuse victims from the earlier mess) but I guarantee she isn't going to be given a real outlet that will enable her to say what she wants. The people she will be speaking to are not bound by any confidentiality. They'll talk to Ma and Pa Duggar about anything she says so of course she will censor herself and keep sweet. UGH.

It's so awkward to even think of Josh Duggar and manwhore in the same sentence. Y'know, I always felt sorry for Anna for having her first experience be with someone like that. Bless HER heart. She even had to keep on doing it with some repetition to make four young'uns. And that took some kind of gumption I don't even know the name of.

To think that other women went there with Josh, even if he paid them really good money, just ewwwwww. Ew. EWWW. I know I'm a lesbian, but he is just not a nice looking dude. I can appreciate nice looking dudes ... Joe Manganiello comes to mind. Channing Tatum, too. I even thought McDreamy and McSteamy were pretty to look at over on Grey's Anatomy. I like beauty as much as the next gal --- but Josh Duggar is not anywhere near my line of handsome. He's so far down that he can't even look up and SEE my line of handsome. So ... manwhore and Josh Duggar causes a disconnect in my brain.

I watched a few RU videos and I felt like I was sitting around the old family dinner table listening to my father lay the sins of the world on us and expect us to be better people for it. Sheesh. Talk about heavy hitting. Josh is going to come out of that place even more determined to be a creep just because he'll have to rebel against the utter hogwash of it all.

If Anna had no previous sexual experience, sad as it is, she has no idea that what she's experienced is sub-par, or that it could be much better for her.  Ignorance is bliss, as the saying goes.

Oh, come on now, IntoTheMystic! You know you've seen Josh on a trapeze. (One of the few episodes I actually saw part of.) Didn't that turn your crank just a little? Get one of them Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee sex swings and go to town!

I think it's funny that he paid $1000+ to get some. Clueless? Trying to be a big shot? Or did the woman negotiate that price after quizzing Josh and learning that he liked to get rough? Inquiring minds...

I think he looks like a generic schlub. If I didn't know who or what he was, I wouldn't find him noticeably unattractive, although my first impression would not involve sex.

It just seems weird to me that his family's cult actually provided him with a housebound completely dependent sex slave, and his kink is for a self-supporting young woman with a job. Granted, he wants to treat that young woman like a sex slave, which is undoubtedly how he ended up paying for it.

What, this picture doesn't get your motor running?

You know, sometimes I wonder if I'm being unfair and, I don't know, fatshaming Josh. Like, "oh, the only reason we don't think he's cute is because he's overweight!" But I don't think that's it, at least I hope not. But it's true that I used to think Josh was relatively cute in a squeaky clean throwback-to-the-50s sort of way back when he was younger and now he's just... blech. But the ensuing weight gain can't be the defining thing, because there have been overweight men and women who I thought were attractive. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's his odious personality bleeding through. It's like every picture of his screams smug. And despite what he wrote on his Ashley Madison profile I still picture him as being a really selfish lover.

Julia, "schlub" is the perfect way to describe him. He is not someone who ever looks sharp in a suit, no matter how much he tries. Maybe a fedora would help. (Heh heh heh.)

The people she will be speaking to are not bound by any confidentiality. They'll talk to Ma and Pa Duggar about anything she says so of course she will censor herself and keep sweet. UGH.

Anna can leave. She has a brother who is willing to help her. She claims she knew about the 'light touching' before marriage. She KNEW three months ago what type of guy she married. She stood by Josh and escorted him to FRC appearances, seemingly in support of FRC. She is raising children in this belief system.

Those M&M's though. Someone knock some sense into Anna so they are not raised ln this cult. Those kids are her responsibility so poor Anna can suck it up before she destroys their lives. She is a flashback Michelle. Get it together girl. Anna is an adult and the KIDS are what really matters.

I am such a bitch. haha.

Edit: This is just my opinion, but you are not alone IntoTheMystic. There is a lot of sympathy for Anna out there and she will need support to support her children properly

Galax-Arena, what about the "defrauding" pic, where they had to blur out his crack? Get thee behind me, Satan!

I don't care about Josh's weight. To me he just still looks too boyish or unfinished or something. Granted, I am almost old enough to be his grandmother, so... But even in my youth, Josh would not have been my type. Knowing his worldview doesn't help.
