Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

  • Start Topic

I'm imagining a group of fundie women giving Anna bags of french maid costumes, nurse costumes, naughty school girl uniforms...

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I have to say, I don't really blame Anna for not leaving Josh right now.  I can understand that she's going to see if the therapy will be beneficial to Josh.  If Josh goes through his therapy and his behaviors are unchanged, or if Anna just can't get over the betrayal, then I think she can leave the marriage knowing that she did everything she could.  I may think Josh is a smug pervert, but Anna loves him, and I think it's okay that she waits a bit before she decides what she wants to do.

But there is no actual therapy being done.

Yes, that's fine. It's just that a weekly chat with little context when not all member are there is confusing and unfairly monopolizes the topic is all.

But try to make it about Josh and Anna. It is the topic for Josh. If he's not there, just a brief description and not a huge off topic meandering. Yes, we let it go last week. It's not something we need pages about every week.

The lord purposed on me to watch the RU broadcast this evening.  I met so many new friends who nevertheless felt familiar - Jenna James, J'Aja Smithson, Tracy Lourdes, Faree Ginger.  I was blessed to see someone who appeared to be our beloved Josh.  When the speaker spoke of "haters" I felt he was speaking directly to Josh to heal his burdened heart.  When the final speaker demonstrated the bondage of our sins by tying up one of their members, I felt he was speaking to Josh's bondage to women outside of his sacred union.  I can only hope he is healed as so many of us were tonight through this ministry.

Did not see Josh.  I think Waldo is in hiding.

Laughed my ass off.  Our PTV posters are the funniest comedians ever! That stuff should be bottled for comedic value and sold as a pharmaceutical.

I took screen shots. I have Joe tied up and everything. As soon as I figure out how, I'll post my favorite. I have a total six-pack from laughing.

For those who could not watch: There was an interactive part of the sermon where the pastor literally tied this guy Joe to a chair. With rope. Bondage.

Extra funny: at one point we were all in a religious fervour going "Amen! PTV! I mean PTL! Show me the way to the light!" and the admin guy got into it too and typed "JESUS!" I think I have it in a screen shot.

Thanks for the report! Interesting that Josh wasn't spotted. I think it's possible that he's there, but they are keeping him out of the public eye, at least for awhile. Maybe they figure that sooner or later the interest will die down. Which is probably true.

At that point, I am not sure if anyone was looking for Josh. We were all rolling on the floor laughing at the chat comments.  Josh should give us a tater tot casserole for taking the spotlight away from him for once.

The video camera didn't show everybody in the congregation on the right and left sides.  The center section was visible, but guests and visitors sat there, the resident women sat on the right side and the resident men sat on the left side.  The last few rows of both sides were out of view of the camera, so Josh could easily have been sitting there on the left, out of the frame.

There was a lot of creativity in that chat!  *LOL*

Thanks for the sacrifice and the reports! I was thinking of logging in but I'm already nauseous but it appears I missed out on some laughs (that I could of used). That's crazy they actually tied up someone. I guess they didn't pick Josh because they thought he might like it.

The lectures were very interesting.  There was so much talk of bondage and serving the master that it could just as easily have been a BDSM* seminar as a church service.  In fact, with the tying up of Joe, it was a BDSM seminar with demonstrations.  Even one of the hymns could easily be interpreted as describing a Master/slave relationship.  This is some pretty kinky preaching.  Maybe it is the perfect place for Josh.  Fortunately for us all, the final speaker did decide to go longer and deeper.

I saw the North Love chime in with their "JESUS". I'm reading the comments now. There's no way I could sit through two of these services. If Josh is there, he's stronger than me.

There was also a perfectly nice middle-aged woman who sang an unrecognizable "hymn" very badly.  It was compared to "Send in the Clowns", but actually much worse.  And we suspect that Erin Bates, or her clone was pounding on the piano in between sermons.  Inspirational stuff.

The unfortunate thing is a few of us (me not among them because, once I figured out J'Aja Smithson didn't ring any bells to them, I didn't want to get banned) REALLY took them to task in the beginning. I don't know who because the names were different at that point, but someone said "Where are the licensed mental health professionals? Where is Josh Duggar? How is this going to help him? How is this going to help addiction?" It was pretty merciless. They were all banned pretty quickly and the comments deleted. It was only after that we started sticking with the PTL stuff because well. HILARIOUS.

ETA:

The funniest part of that was when one guy was going on about how there may be people here tonight who are here for outside reasons and here to judge and blah blah blah, and someone typed "Oooh, we're getting schooled!" I watched it and it was the first comment I saw deleted. :D

Yeah I think it's a better strategy to seemingly go along with the program before they close the live chat feature for future broadcasts.

Maybe Josh listens to these sermons on a podcast on the treadmill, or watched from a CC TV somewhere off camera.

...And as for that porn star looking like Anna and Anna not being adventurous enough for Josh so he got a stand in wife? This has nothing to do with Anna and everything to do with Josh and his mental health problems.  Anna could be a freak in the bedroom and it's irrelevant.  Josh cheated because of his demons. It's his stuff and his issues and his problems....for me, Anna is not even in the discussion.

^^^THIS, THIS, THIS. Every speculation about Josh's choices being in any way motivated by Anna not measuring up to what he wanted sexually is somewhat offensive to me. I'll let the uber-fundies go down that road. I don't like Anna's religion, and I don't like Anna's holier-than-thou vibe, but she doesn't deserve to have her sexual appetites and proclivities questioned, now or ever. Josh made his choices because he's a hypocrite, a liar, and a cheat.

It's not Anna's fault that Josh decided to stick his Pillsbury Dough dick in a porn star. Josh and Josh alone are the reasons for cheating.

I agree. These people (Anna AND Josh) made a specific and active choice to marry without knowing ANYTHING about one another's sexual preferences. What either of them wanted was 100% not the point. Their marriage was like a medieval arranged marriage to produce legitimate offspring, not about compatibility on any level. As others have pointed out, this type of marriage is common in many cultures, even today, and can produce happy long-term marriages. It can also produce horrific situations filled with misery and abuse, and for others it just produces comfortable arrangements that satisfy conventional social requirements and leave them free to look elsewhere for fulfillment.

Like a lot of men in this type of culture, I think that Josh has Madonna/whore issues. His wife is the good virtous woman who gives him children, but he craves the overtly sexual whore. Anna could be the most sexually adventurous woman in Arkansas, but to Josh she is a pure snowflake and not someone woth whom he can share his lust, his fantasies, or just his sexuality in general.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for Josh right now, but I think that both he and Anna were intentionally misled and misinformed. They were both led to beieve that the complexities of an adult human relationship could be overcome by a childish fantasy of a Christian knight and a virginal princess.

Can you freaking imagine being grilled about your sex life by your in-laws??? These people are sex-obsessed loons! Every goddam thing is about sex. No boundaries. Even if it were remotely appropriate for JB and his lovely animatronic helpmeet to quiz Anna, could they ever possibly think it might be a little difficult for a young woman to grow up terrified of being a cock-tease if her knee shows, to having to be All Things Sexual to her nasty husband - literally overnight? And she has never even had one private conversation with the guy before she is tied to him forever. But any issues they are having must be because she isn't putting out on demand. Two relative strangers could not possibly have turned out to be incompatible. They just need to screw all the time. How dare she try to control her own vagina? Her parents signed away the rights.

God, what a great set-up for the men. Why oh why oh why did any woman ever fall for this crap? Yeah, I know poor Anna has been brain-washed since birth. But what about the volunteers - like Michelle??

We don’t even have any idea if they are incompatible. Plenty of men (and women) who have previously slept with wives or longterm partners before making a commitment cheat, regularly, just because they can. They may be problems in each individual relationship that outsiders don’t see but, it’s not necessarily indicative of a fulfilment the other partner can’t meet (or is even aware of) or a specific problem.

I’ve always thought though that for both men and women going from no kissing to sex within a day must be really strange, even if they do get a sex book from their parents sometimes. It know it happens in a lot of cultures and has throughout history, but personally the idea would give me a panic attack.

As much as I think this “treatment” centre is a placebo effect at best and actually harmful at worst, I can’t help feeling sorry for some of these people. They didn’t ask to have their “treatment” scruitinised by international media and internet commentators because Josh Duggar is allegedly there (or allegedly absconded) for what basically amounts to image rehabilitation. Both the live stream comments and the service were hilarious but it must be a head trip to realise the tabloids are writing articles about your “save the sinners” service.

If they had banned Tracy Lourdes I wouldn't have been sure whether it was because it looked like "Traci Lord" or because "Lourdes" made them think of Catholic "Mary worship".

I thought that was Josh in the dark polo just at the visible edge of the left rows, but the picture wasn't that sharp.

Me.  Bugmenot.com has tons of livestream accounts for use.  I really enjoyed how the bigger guy who was giving us a stern lesson would respond to the comments being typed.  Was someone feeding him lines/updates through an earpiece?  When I posted the licensed professional line, he went on and on about how secular treatments only focus on the mind and body --- but not the soul.  At UA they focus on all three!  Okay, that's good buddy, but if you promote that you treat the mind and body as well, you should at least have professionals licensed to do so on staff.

The funniest part of that was when one guy was going on about how there may be people here tonight who are here for outside reasons and here to judge and blah blah blah, and someone typed "Oooh, we're getting schooled!" I watched it and it was the first comment I saw deleted. :D

That was me again too.

Someone posted that the guy was a slave to food or addicted to food -- and he went right away into how he, after an addiction to alcohol and marijuana, turned to food.  So, I think he either had the livestream up on a large monitor and could see it or he had an ear piece and another UAer would tell him what was being posted.  When people would post about the poor sound quality, they worked right away to remedy it.

At this point, they know the increase in viewership is because of Josh Duggar.  They were swift to delete Duggar references.  I think that if Josh wasn't there, he would have said something to us last night.  In the 8th pew on the left side was a man in a black shirt and jeans, I think that next to him (mostly off camera) was a man in a white shirt.  You would see his head every now and then.  I think that was Josh.

The UAers had a guy give testimony that he tried to leave after 9 days but came back.  I think that participant was selected just for Josh.  It was a: "Look, if you leave, you're welcome back."

I'm going to try to figure out a way we can all chat together next Friday night.  If it's okay with the mods, I'll post the link here on Friday before the livestream.

I just looked and was shocked that there were 457 comments on Freakfest last night.  I think the most they have ever had was 2.  LOL   I wonder if Anna watches from home so she can get some healing from her bondage and baggage as well.  It's probably a requirement for the spouse or something insane like that.

You guys were great last night!  Free Jinger was commenting live and was floored by all the posts that they couldn't explain.  Everything from here on out is from Free Jinger.  Italicized quotes are from the RU chat:

Anybody following the chat? There's a poster called J'Aja Smithson!
Yes! What is the J'Aja bit do you think? A play on the JA Josh and Anna thing?
Not sure - been trying to figure out that.

Okay, who's Faree Ginger?????

And I assume "Jenna James" is supposed to be Jenna Jameson...
Jenna James – Music is beautiful and reminds me of Erin Bates on piano.

OK, Jenna James and Faree Ginger have GOT to be somebody's socks working in unison -- they are both mocking the RU commenter and he doesn't even realize it --

leighdear – Whomever is playing has a distinctive sound.
Jenna James – Music is beautiful and reminds me of Erin Bates on piano.
Faree Ginger – Amen!
J'Aja Smithson – Audio perfect now! :)

the poster "leighdear"- what is that a reference to?

Tracy Lourdes just joined the chat.

And SewSumi!

And now Danica has chimed in!

Zack Miri has joined.

Tracy Lourdes – My preacher wears shoes. Not NIKEs.
Jemima Jobs – Satan has erected many fortresses in the hearts of those here tonight. God bless their strength to change.
Tracy Lourdes – Oh, you mean another Tracy.
Zack Miri – The power of the Lord is in this testimony! PTL!
Tracy Lourdes – Get thee behind me, Satan. And don't push!
Jemima Jobs – Praise the Lord for fathers
Muffy – Faree and I share an old friend Tracy who had many, many burdens. She has found freedom.
Danica D'hillonsen – Amen! Amen! Let the power of Christ in my life!
Faree Ginger – Freedom doesn't come from governments. It comes from Christ!
J'Aja Smithson – The Power of Christ IS a wonderful thing!

To be fair, the preacher is the one who mentioned bondage first, but Jenna, D'aja and Danica sure ran with that. And NIKES!

J'Aja Smithson – Praise God leighdear!
Zack Miri – If your hand offend you...that is one of the hard sayings.
leighdear – I just got a job.
Tracy Lourdes – GoFundMe is an enormous help when you don't have a job.
Jemima Jobs – Amen. I struggled with consumer debt until I discovered the Financial Freedom Seminars.
Danica D'hillonsen – Thank you, thank you! This is moving me to tears. I'm not always believed in my struggles.
Faree Ginger – I like how they address financial burdens in this ministry. Just recently I prayed about a $1,500 debt that I owed and the Lord helped me find a way to just have to pay part of that debt.

Danica D'hillonsen – I give myself to God. No other but God. And his son J

Danica D'hillonsen – Please let him show himself to me!
Zack Miri – Pray for Jesus to expose himself to you, Muffy.
Muffy – My hand so often offends me when I am online.

Tracy Lourdes – When we sin, we pray, and then try not to repeat.

Edward – You must take His yoke upon you sister, Matthew 11:28-30

Whoever is monitoring the comments over at Livestream has got to be one of the thickest people on the planet.

anyjkid just joined.

Faree Ginger – My customer in Philadelphia only paid me part of what he owed me. Jesus needs to return to Philly!

I still can't believe that the Livestream moderator was so clueless.

They were probably thrilled that so many people were being saved. PTL! Go deeper... into grace! Let Jesus expose himself to you! He is the safe word from bondage! AMEN! AMEN!

I just realized that I sat through a church service for the first time since I was a teenager.  I may be back next week, though, if it is as inspiring as this one was!

Hopefully next week it will be longer. And deeper. And with more bondage.

"Praise Jesus, Praise Jesus! Oh my God, I'm coming." - Too bad it got deleted, but not quite fast enough

So generally they have UP TO 4 comments per video... you guys got 450+ comments on that one!

To all on the live chat - that was just brilliant! Bravo! I have not been so entertained in a long time.  Bet there won't be a live chat next week.

Oh my GOD! Remember how last night Crisco was saying "People hurt others because they are hurting so if you're watching and you have a burden there are folks here who don't know you but they love you and they just want to encourage you with this nice glass of refreshing kool aid"…. *throws laptop through window*

So, I went to bed early - did they seriously demonstrate preacher-on-man bondage on the altar at sex addict / ex-gay rehab?

I feel like I should let them know that Aja was just the Steely Dan album that I was listening to when I opened up my original TWoP account 100 years ago.

In my view, anything that can be done to shine even the smallest spotlight on charlatans like these who prey on vulnerable people (harsh--but that's how I see it), I'm all for it. In "our" (in quotes because I did not participate) initial confrontational push, if anything, there was an air of wanting to PROTECT Josh Duggar from these people, demanding to know how this was going to help him. It was the right spirit, a just spirit. :)

I'm going to try to figure out a way we can all chat together next Friday night.  If it's okay with the mods, I'll post the link here on Friday before the livestream.

I'm answering this personally, not as a mod:

I used to be the administrator of a now-defunct single-show site and was a mod on several others. And I set up chats all the time for those of us who wanted to chat during the shows. It was fun, it didn't clutter the regular threads, and we had some bonding in the chat group. I love when that last thing happens - you don't expect it from a TV-show forum, but it just goes to show that in the midst of all the snark, cat photos, and other online crap, wonderful things do come from the Internet. So I think setting up a chat link is a great idea. There are lots of options. I always preferred Chatzy.com for its straightforward simplicity, but there have been about eleventy billion other such services pop up since I last arranged a chat. For example, you can use Skype without the visual element, Facebook, etc., etc.

I don't think they will. Even if they know you are mocking them (and they really might not...), they probably think that you will eventually hear their message. They are probably thrilled the Duggars have attracted so much attention, because now people are coming to hear the Lord's message.

Well, I have to thank all those who listened - I would have gone nuts. So, many thanks.

There is a part of me that does feel sorry for Josh after seeing what that program is like. He needs real help. He could pray from now to dooms day and it will not cure his problem. I think both JB and Mechelle know this, but this is Josh's punishment for his steps into the real world and embarrassing them.

Poor Anna, being questioned night and day with no peace from those nut cases. Her brother should just fly in and take her away.
