Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

As someone who's name actually came from their parents favorite porn star; I really, really hope Mackynzie is just the only M name Josh could think of that he hadn't slept with yet.

Seriously? Jenna? Misty?

That feedback was a tech glitch that we also got live. Just FF it a bit to get over that part. That said, that video is the Curington guy who was the "face" of RU (letting the corrupt Duggar friend operate in the shadows) until his untimely death in 2010 at age 45.

Shoot me now. I already know far too much about this racket, and we've only known about its existence since Wednesday or Thursday. Yikes.

Okay, that's one clear positive point for the Duggars. The Duggar obsession drives fast and encyclopedic learning about the nutso branch of the Christian Right.

Dead serious. My parents were into the more...sadistic/maso type of viewing, so it's not super obvious unless you know some of the underground stars of the 80's.

So for M's sake, I really really hope there isn't a connection.

It continues to baffle me they sent Josh to a place full of women. For fucks sake.

but they're locked in an inaccessible place. Maybe that's like a binder full of women.

The wildly gesticulating red haired sweating guy who kept the camera man on his toes? I can see how he had a heart attack, he literally screamed his whole segment and he figuratively screamed hypertension.

If that guy backed me into a corner giving me the hard-sell for a timeshare, I think I might get a heart attack.

I'm surprised that the wimmin are given an extra half hour of sleep. I figured they'd be up early fixing breakfast for the menfolk.

Maybe they allow the women they claim to treat with 'post depression rape' to sleep an extra half hour before they have to start their free labor for them. Labor camp to treat women with post rape depression, cures it every time.

RU will always be Rutgers University to me. Every time I see it on the board I'm like, "Why are we talking about Rutgers? Oh right, that's the name of the non-recovery program."

I grew up in Edison and keep having the same issue when I read that!

On the subject of the fauxtherapy, I wonder if Josh is under lock and key and not allowed to blow. He might want to, but if the snake oil therapists are smart they'll force him to stay (at least two months, until everyone loses interest) because if he blows immediately it'll look awful for them.

Especially when they're locked up with limited food doing housework for 'sex addicts' who believe they've decoded the secret language women use to 'ask for it'

Anyone know where Anna and the kids are living?

Remodel of their house should be complete by now, so she could be living there.

But with the newest scandal, Anna and the children are most likely still in JB's guest house.

Me too. As far as I'm concerned, putting Josh Duggar, a self-professed porn/sex addict, in a sex rehab program full of women is like putting Dracula in charge of a blood bank.

Women and men have separate housing.

I know, but IMO having Josh in a treatment program where women are involved is too great a temptation for him, whether they live separately or not.

I guess that's better than making Anna move into TTH to share a room with The Duggar girls.

So we can watch this wonderful rehab show live next Friday night and actually chat about it on their site live?  OH BOY!  They may get more action than they ever imagined.

We all get a bottle of wine - (Of course not wine but grape juice ;)) - and watch together.  First one to spot Waldo (Joshie) everyone takes a sip.  Someone gets banned - take a sip.

Any other ideas for the game?

I'm going to make a toast to their slogan Freedom, Not Sobriety, is Our Goal, every time I take a sip.

wonder if we are ever gonna hear anything about Anna and the kids? I guess there isn't much to say but I feel like "that's it?" I wanna hear how it all goes down!

Good question. The Duggars ended their relationship with PEOPLE and then the magazines made sure to burn their business relationship. The Duggars need a new publication to act as their mouth piece, but since they refuse - even through all the scandals - to employ to use of an actual PR agency there is little room for another magazine to develop a new relationship with the Duggars. We won't see an Anna piece until JB is able to monetize the story. Perhaps we'll see her or one of the children in the background of an Instagram or a Duggar Studios video, but we won't get an actual interview (written or televised) until there is cash in hand. Well there's all the fan sites and blogs, I'm sure Lily and Ellie would be happy to publish whatever Jimbob wants...

They've just lost much of the mainstream media.  But I bet  Jessa and Ben get some coverage  when she gives birth. I don't think they will turn down free publicity.

I too am mesmerized by Band-Aid Head guy and his date. They were snuggled up like they were watching a double feature at the drive-in.

They are not program participants--Band Aid drives the bus that goes to Walmart weekly (perhaps to load up on hand lotion) and his date is the girl who stows away and protects the overly- excessive amount of ladies clothing brought there.

YOU GUYS ARE ALL SLAYING ME>  perhaps with the change of hosts at The Daily Show and Late Night there are writing jobs in your futures?

There is something that just clicked in my head regarding the RU live stream party we had on Friday. It vaguely bugged me at the time but I wasn't really paying enough attention to anything except how hilarious and messed up everything was. When I signed on to the RU website, CofCinci's downright genius "needs more cowbell" comment had been up for about an hour (according to the chat board.) I saw it, I immediately came here to tell everyone about it, and within five minutes it was deleted and CofCinci was banned from eternal salvation.

I submit that we have a plant on this board. And since the king of vegetation is Jim Bob.......

I bet Josh loves being out of the house and getting a good night's sleep away from all those kids and the newborn. Plus, there is a Chik Fil A only 1.7 miles down the road (approx. 5 min -- I looked it up), so you know he's kewl with it. The guy has a long life in front of him, what could they possibly do to him at RU that would make a bit of difference in his psyche?  He got caught, but that doesn't mean he has self-motivation to change his ways. Maybe Anna will decide she's okay with an open marriage!!!

Actually, the RU men's home is about as far across town from the Chik-Fil-A as you can get.  it's out on the northwest end of town where the women's home is the one on the southeast side.  There's not much near the men's home except a whole lot of bad neighborhoods.

Thinking about this, I wonder if having women around, at least under certain group circumstances like the live stream rantathons, is perhaps a positive. He needs women, and his interactions with them, to be as normalized as possible.

NOT that I think there can truly be any co-ed activity that is within spitting distance of normal at Camp Scamafundie, but I think a big part of Josh's trouble is rooted in the mindset that frames all male/female interaction as dangerously sexual. The patriarchal system the Duggars espouse is the ultimate objectification of women, reducing them to nothing but their sexual utility for the benefit of--or temptation of--men. The idea that women are simply the co-equal other half of the human race is so foreign to Josh, that it might as well be the quadratic equation. (Ha...I was going to say something like 'string theory' or 'quantum mechanics,' but a common term from high school algebra is plenty complex when talking about Smugs.) Anyway, even though this nutty program won't do jack shit to get his head straight for the long haul, maybe being around women in a controlled environment would be at least a little beneficial.

Even if they weren't the hideous Duggars, whom no one should ever again pay to spout off their sick or confused or otherwise deeply flawed ideas to the public, I wouldn't want to read an interview with Anna. She's a private citizen going through an awful -- but not uncommon -- period of her life, while raising four tiny kids. No one should be asking her to talk "on the record." She shouldn't be talking "on the record." The public has no legitimate interest in knowing what she's thinking or feeling. Encouraging Duggars to talk for money is just further confusing this already nutso family in their ideas about how money is actually earned. Plus, she's a hella confused person whose blathering on this painful topic would be instructive to no one and probably not even interesting to those who just want to gawk.

I am going to sort of have to disagree here.  Anna Duggar is not a private person; she is a very public one.  She participated in a show where she earned money off publicly displaying herself and her children.  She went on the show and discussed things like how to have a good marriage and how to be a good mother (btw I think she is a very good mother).  I feel very sorry for her, but you cannot have it both ways in this life (though the Duggars seem to think so).  Anna was a willing adult participant in a show that was all about showing the rest of the world their lifestyle and with it was the implicit lecture on how that lifestyle was morally superior to our own.  Anna does need to answer some tough questions.  No, not right at this moment, but she is part of an entity which spreads the lie that if women are modest and sexual available that their husbands won't cheat.  Essentially the message of their religion is that the reason the rest of us are such "cheating bastards" is because wives are not doing their Godly duty to their husbands.

Oh yes, Anna ought to be thoroughly grilled over all this.  She cannot have it both ways; she is not entitled to play the "perfect wife", which in their religion translates to faithful husband and then not have to answer some real questions about it.

Yeah, I take your point, and I even agree with it in a way.

I'm among those who've never watched the Duggars, just read everything I can about them because, for personal reasons, they horrify me. Despite my fascination, though, I'm so opposed to reality tv, especially when it involves children, that I just refuse to consider anyone who's been on reality tv as a public person. I think that just encourages them to think the same of themselves and encourages more people to try to get on reality tv and encourages the networks to keep on pushing it as their cheap-ass alternative to something better and smarter!

Thus -- even though I agree with you that Anna put herself out there as a kind of role model and advice giver and probably should be held accountable for that in some way, I just don't want her to say any more. I don't think any interview with her actually would or could hold her accountable, for one thing. When people don't want to answer interview questions, they just evade them until the interviewer gives up. That's what she'd do, I'm sure, and it wouldn't be instructive to anybody. And it wouldn't even make her truly consider what she's been involved in. It'd just make her feel like a martyr -- but a martyr who can be paid for blathering to the media. I wouldn't like that as an outcome!

To me it is not really about accountability but more about the general public seeing her flounder and stumble over her explanations.  The show heavily promoted the notion that this lifestyle was very romantic and quaint.  We need to see the Anna Duggar Sweats interview as a counter to goofy lies of the show.  Their religion takes a golden age that never existed and abuses women and children.  People need to see the reality of all this nonsense.  Anna represents the reality much more than Erin Bates and her suitor showing up on a horse-drawn carriage to propose under a gazebo.

What if we all got accounts that allowed us to post on RU's livestream, then, at a preassigned time, all posted the exact same thing? Like an online flashmob. If we don't want to get blocked (talkin' to you "Needs more cowbell" ;), we could come up with something normal sounding but with a "tell." Maybe a typo like"Hellelujah?" Just enough off to make them aware (and hopefully nervous) there's a large block of probably-not-fans watching. Thoughts?
