The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

I believe that ultimately Josh as an adult is responsible for his own behavior, but I sure as hell wish he had at least one genuinely good role model in his little IFB circle who could show him that there is indeed another way, because god knows Josh doesn't have the strength of character/conviction to figure it out on his own. Sending him to a "rehab" center run by someone who's protecting an abuser? That sounds like a great decision. RME.

That's true, and I totally agree, especially with formal writing skills. But I think most people do have a recognizable "voice" that stays pretty consistent; particularly in more casual settings like comment sections. That "Alice's" voice just didn't sound to me like the original. YMMV.

I totally agree--two different voices.

So, I just saw an trailer for TLC's special on child sexual abuse. Are they still using Jill and Jessa in it?

Not that I was planning to watch it anyway; I have a shit ton of repressed anger with TLC following the molestation stuff and the way they "slyly" acted and waited to cancel.

Just wondered, as I think those girls are a detriment to those that have been impacted by molestation as children and should not be given any sort of platform anymore with which to spew their utter ignorance.

You know, this started out as sarcasm, but now I'm asking - between his home, and family's faith community, where supposedly much worse things than what Josh did are happening to all over the place, to ATI, to, well, the FRC, has Josh Duggar ever been in a single environment where someone _wasn't_ protecting an abuser?

Just received People in the mail.  The cover images have been reversed.  The main image now is of the 3 men who stopped the terrorist attack in France with Josh and Anna in a tiny picture.  As it should be.

Hear hear.

I'd like to see this made in into an original Lifetime movie. Dave Coulier as "Jim Bob." Julia Louis Dreyfus as "Michelle," and Harry Dean Stanton as "Bill Gothard." Special appearance of Jonah Hill as "Josh."

I already cast the movie/mini-series

Meredith Baxter Birney in a crispy curl wig, chewing the scenery as Michelle. Mae Whitman (Ann Veal) as Anna. Rainn Wilson (from The Office) as Josh Duggar. Jenna Fischer (from The Office) as Jana Duggar. John Krasinski (from The Office) as Derick Dillard. Steve Carrell (from The Office) as Pa Seewald. Octomom as Jessa Duggar, Spencer Pratt as Ben Seewald. And featuring Geena Davis (and her tooth to gum ratio) as Jill Dillard.

If we need a Bill Gothard, Robert Blake is the perfect choice. Edited by Kokapetl

Josh is single handedly destroying the Duggar's and I can't say that I feel bad for them.

Indeed. It's definitely time that somebody destroyed them. And it's true poetic justice that the damage is being done by their ever-golden child, the one they've been proudest of, one of two or fewer that Michelle truly seems to care for and that Jim Bob clearly saw as continuing the Jim Bob legacy. Couldn't happen to a more deserving pair.

Oh, I meant these people:

E! News reports on the most inane shit.

Are there two covers? The one I got in the mail has the three heroes as the main story/cover pic and the Duggars as a sidebar.

Just read the People article.  Pretty much the same stuff that was online, but they did address Christian patriarchy, Bill Gothard, and Quiverfull.  Also, the "source close to the family" said that "there's not a lot of difference between what they are doing and a cult".  Finally a mainstream publication, fluffy as it is, is actually addressing what we have known for years.

Oh, and they quoted Amy, who went to pray with them and gave Anna "the biggest hug on the planet".  Guess we know who the "source" is.

I got the cover with the heroes too.  I will check the copies at the grocery store the next time I go.

I have to say, having airline points that were about to expire came at a really good time.  My subscription started just as Joshgate 1.0 broke. I would not have forked out the money for People if it wasn't free.

Oh, and only 3 letters about the Jill and Jessa story last  week.  People are praying for them, and one reader said they needed peace, not more exposure.

I can't see Jessa Blessa getting a cover for Baby Bam Bam with People.  By the time November rolls around they will have been off air for 4-5 months and most of her pregnancy won't have been filmed.  The reason that audiences were interested in Izz was because they had watched Jill through her pregnancy and every selfie was breathlessly reported in People.  In comparison, most People readers won't be following Jessa Blessa or Bin on social media and any interest in her pregnancy will have fizzled away.  The only reason that they ever gave the Duggars covers was so that they could have "exclusive" content.  Why would they bother now that everyone has moved on?  Binessa can look forward to a few pages, nothing more IMO.

It will be interesting to see. If Jessa accepts a People gig for her fabulous birth (oh wow. there's another Duggar in the world. *sound of a broken party horn blowing) after the mag tossed her fabulous clan right under the bus, I'd call that evidence of hypocritical whore-mongering. If I thought I had a copasetic relationship with a media entity and that media entity burned me, I would never have dealings with them again. So...clock's tickin, Jessa.

It's not unusual for a magazine to have different covers for the newsstands vs. the one going out to subscribers. People must think the Josh scandal will sell better on the checkout lines.

Dang, I suppose it must be in my DNA, courtesy of all those Southern ancestors. Because I love it when Southern women get their dander up!

Including this woman who expressed concern for Anna, and who promises to raise her daughters to think they breathe fire - in a Facebook post that went viral.

I'm madly in love with her post.

Isn't terrorism a little outside of People magazines scope? I thought it was 100 percent celebrities.

Nah. They've always included "everyman" stories: heroes, crime victims, etc.

Initially, the magazine had far fewer of the "celebrity" gossip and more stories about literary people, controversial sociologists, playwrights etc.

It was only when the tabloid-y British magazines came to the states that they became more tabloid, fashion-oriented and what-were-they-thinking.

That is actually great news. I rarely read People but I find myself elated that they did this reversal. I can't wait to see the cover.

Josh really is hanging with the type of creeps that sell meth at AA meetings. Breaking Bad was good fiction, and a terrible reality. I honestly wonder if he can be 'fixed'. My heart says no.

I blame People entirely. This is another Lauren-Bacall-legendary-actress-shunted-in-favor-of-two-seconds-pregnant-Jill-Duggar-on-the-cover situation. I'm still bitter about Bacall.

Granted....you have to think the Duggars must sell like gangbusters then. ....Right?

Me too Earl - I was royally-steamed about that. Crappy timing for poor Lauren - she deserved much better.

Editors Letter on page 5 of People this week says subscribers receive American Heros cover and newsstands have the Duggar cover. I've seen them do this before...two covers. Makes sense the more sensational story is on newsstands where they make the most $$ per magazine sale.

This story just keeps getting worse and I love it! When a stripper/porn star is creeped out by a guy, according to the InTouch Cover Story, that's bad. As for People's putting them on the one of the new covers because they sell, like I say, "Just because a billion people go to McDonald's, that doesn't mean that the food's gourmet." I too have a problem with how Josh's hypocrisy was exposed, but not that it was. ITA that hacking is wrong, to put it mildly, but seeing Karma making a Happy Meal out of Josh's smug, sorry, self-righteous ass is irresistible.

About Sadie Robertson's pleading for "forgiveness," for Josh's "mistakes," he didn't just make mistakes, he broke-no, shattered-his vows into a million pieces and publically humiliated his wife and kids again in the process.  BTW, Sadie, when you've lived long enough to even start to know what you're talking about, maybe I'll consider giving a shit about your opinions. Until then, STFU.

I swear I saw it mentioned somewhere around here, but it wasn't on the Jessa/Bin topic, that Jessa's appearance tomorrow at the "Southern Women's Conference" is now being protested. Anyway, here's another online article about it: http://www.inquisitr.com/2374891/jessa-duggar-appearance-protested-in-wake-of-josh-duggar-cheating-scandal/. This story also shows us that the design of the website for the conference is oddly similar to the Ashley Madison website. Odd but true.

Hey guys I was just over on the Southern Womens show facebook trying to figure out parking and a poster wrote that the porn star that Josh slept with is there!

If someone doesn't like Jessa, they should refrain from visiting her stupid traveling tour or whatever. Protestors can't claim she's a failure for succumbing to bullying from her family, and yet bully her to behave what they think is the "correct" way. The bile that Jessa continues to receive for this amazes me, I get the impression that Jessa isn't actually considered a victim. And no offense, but what did anyone really expect from something called "Southern Women" anyway?

Popular streaming sites have them. *cough*

TLC must be hedging their Duggar bets.

They no longer have entire episodes for your viewing displeasure but they have a whole catalog of video clips

Well, I guess that clips are better for the squeamish.

But, what up, TLC?

Are you washing your hands of the Duggars or not? Not that long ago full episodes were still available.

Well the free full length episodes were removed from the TLC website due to public demand, they were also part of their promotional strategy. It's still a free country though. and anyone who wants to can still buy the all of the 17 kids through to 19 kids episodes on iTunes, and no one is forcing anyone to buy them. Anyone who thinks that forcing TLC to pretend the family and their show never existed won't undo the past.

The bile that Jessa continues to receive disgusts me. A rational person cannot hate Josh for his actions, yet also hate his victims for how they dealt with that. I think people like that consider themselves the real victims in the situation, which is incredibly egotistical, narcissistic and stupid. If you don't like Jessa, just don't visit her stupid traveling tour or whatever. You can't claim she's a failure for succumbing to bullying from her family, and yet bully her to behave what you think is the "correct" way. Why? We were all playing so nicely together .

I totally agree.  Is this bullying by proxy? Jessa did not molest anyone nor hypocritically break her marriage vows. And even if one doesn't agree with her perception of events it is her story. It is unfair to take Josh's actions out on her, as well as to invalidate any survivor of molestation.

My words were really directed at the people who went and protested. Jessa is a dumb bitch, but that's not exactly rare.

I just hate that a person molested as a child can have that used against her.

Whoever it was that posted Jessa internalized bullying, and became a bully herself was spot on.

I think the vitriol Jessa gets is because people are perceiving her to already forgive Joshgate II, by the posting of that Bible verse on her IG.

Also, she deserves (IMO) to be protested againsr for her views and the bullying she does on Social Media.

Not everyone reacts to things in the same way, and that's fine.  If Jessa though is speaking out publically telling others how they should feel and act then IMO it's perfectly fair to protest against that.  If, on the other hand, all she's doing is saying how she feels then, yeah, it's bullying behavior to try and make her feel differently even if we strongly suspect what she's saying for public consumption may not actually reflect what she really feels, or at any rate felt at the time.  I don't know enough about Jessa to say which of these two versions is the right one.

Jessa spoke about her sexual abuse once on the Megyn Kelly show nearly three months ago. She seems unwilling and uncomfortable discussing it any further, except by participating in the upcoming TLC/RAINN sexual abuse thing Breaking the Silence, which will show her undertaking Docutraining®. I think she clearly wants to move on from unpleasant events in her past. She may be ignorant and a complete idiot, but to raise her handling of her own sexual abuse as a child in order to stop her from opening her big fat mouth on unrelated subjects, eg the protests at the Southern Women thing, is really low.

I'll jump in here not for the sake of debating rather more for the sake of explanation. Jessa's very public downplaying of molestation invalidates the effect of it for many many people who also survived it.If she wants public sympathy she needs to sit down and stfu. Keep her ridiculously uninformed opinions on how molestation as a child "is no big deal" to herself and others as ignorant as she is.

No debating here either. But neither Jessa nor Jill said child molestation is no big deal, they shared their feelings on their situation. I have worked with, and continue to work with many survivors that have lived through horrendous traumas, and I feel very protective of all survivors, even ones who spout judgmental bible quotes.

Agreed to a certain extent. The problem is that she opens her big fat mouth repeatedly on social media with her asinine and totally uneducated opinions, thereby opening herself wide open to public opinion. She vilifies and condemns those with different beliefs and lifestyles and encourages young impressionable minds to agree with her. She spouts eternal damnation for those "she thinks" deserve it and yet spouts forgiveness for heinous crimes some of the rest of us believe actually DESERVE eternal damnation. True Christians believe there will be only one judge in the end to decide what will happen to our souls.Jesus h.christ who in their right mind would listen to this ill bred illiterate hillbilly spout her platitudes and PAY to do it?
