Cold Open: Of course we start with Trump and Cruz, which was perfect. Seriously, this whole week has been nuts, it started with DiCaprio winning an Oscar and went downhill from there.

Monologue: Like Kyle, I'm a medium fan of Jonah Hill so the burn between Jonah & Kyle was great. And then Jonah awkwardly broke into song. Everyone involved seemed hesitant about doing it, and they ended it as soon as they could.

Racists For Trump: Like the cold open, this show doesn't even need to do anything to get their point across, just need to sum up what's been happening. Subtlety is pretty much gone from this election. I knew where this was going, I still loved it.

Fon Du Loc Action News: Good thing I have closed captioning or else I wouldn't be able to understand anything these characters are saying. I'd like to think people in the writers room talked like Wisconsinites for a while and wrote a sketch based around that. Taran and Beck's characters were great, the rest was meh.

The Champ: This made me feel sad for Jonah Hill. Kudos, SNL.

Student Auction: Saudi royals love teens that are minor internet sensations? Ooooookaaaay. And "Damn, Daniel" is the punchline? I'd say that joke's not gonna age well but I already think it's a dated reference.

WU: "Where do we even start?!" Good question, Colin. Bill Clinton jokes and Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started A Conversation With never disappoint with me. Of course Kate McKinnon plays the cranky 110 year old woman, but that bit went on way too long. "Sanders' campaign is now so rich that it's voting for Hillary Clinton" was my favorite joke of the night. This was a good one overall. And say what you will, but Jay's Eddie Murphy impression was Vanessa-as-Rachel-from-Friends-level of spot-on it was scary.

Murder Mystery: There was so much potential with the other characters, they were just sidelined by what Jonah Hill did in the bathroom.

Inside SoCal: Hey, Good Neighbor is back! A sketch that matches Jonah's awkwardness seemed like a perfect fit for him. All the sad dudebros at the hospital mourning the breast reduction was perfect, though. Beer pong and everything.

Silver Star Catering: Oh no, it's another "Jonah Hill interrupts a sketch" sketch. Food looked good, though.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I was missing Jonah's "I'm six!" kid character. Ariana Grande hosts next week. I'm preparing to write this month off, we were doing so well, too.

Boy I didn't.  I was relieved when that wasn't the first sketch after the monologue.   In fact, I think this might have been my favorite show he's hosted.  He blended pretty well with the cast.

Yay! Jason back as Mitt Romney in the cold open!  I had a feeling that was a possibility.   He seemed like he was having fun with it too, which was nice to see.  (I think he was so over the show his last two seasons or so as a cast member.)   Bobby was great in it too as Christie.  I like that they got the dig in with Trump telling him to get on a plane and go home.

Honestly I sorta wish they had spent maybe the first half hour just recapping the past week.

It finally felt like they came full circle with "The racists for Trump" ad and finally exorcised the  horrible memory of him hosting.

Subtly is pretty much gone from this election.

Well the whole thing kinda feels like one long never ending SNL sketch.  Just saying.

Once again I can't help but notice how well rounded the cast is right now.  It really is an ensemble in the best sense.  Tonight I noticed how well Beck does the every man/straight roles.

Cold Open: Good job vb68 on predicting the Jason cameo! I laughed way too hard at Clinton: "There's so many people who have said they'd never vote for me in a million years, and to you I say: welcome."

Monologue: They totally forgot they had to write this, didn't they?

Racists For Trump: Yep, this is what we needed. Just lay it out straight, no room for beating around the bush anymore. This wasn't long but it didn't need to be. It was perfect.

Fond Du Lac Action News: I laughed so hard at Taran yelling "69!" offscreen.

The Champ: This was awesome. The neighbors being the oldest living twins was random but a hilarious add-on.

Student Auction: "I will give each of your parents $500,000 for the inconvenience." "Have fun, sweetheart!"

Weekend Update: Girl at a Party is back! Hers might have been my favorite of the OJ jokes, and they were all solid. Kate as the old lady was perfect, but Vanessa wasn't upstaged. "If you throw it back to me, I will say the n word." And Jay cycling through all those impressions was insane.

Murder Mystery: Poop jokes are so very, very tired. I liked Cecily's character though. "I'm an American! I have rights!"

Inside SoCal: When Pete's character got all upset over Cecily getting the breast reduction surgery, there was a bizarre moment where someone in the audience went "aww!" I know Pete has his fangirls but like...context, friend.

Catering: This was dumb.

This was a pretty middle of the road, throwaway episode, imo. The first half was strong but it really fell off after Update. Jonah felt like an afterthought. But at least he didn't bring back that dumb 6-year-old character, once I saw it wasn't the first sketch after the monologue I felt we were in the clear. This show realizing a recurring bit has gotten stale, we're truly through the looking glass now, people!

I won't lie, "Yeah, well I miss your career!!!" made me laugh out loud. Kyle Mooney, you are a treasure.

Jay's WU bit was just a masterclass of how to do impressions - watching him run from one to the other so quickly and nailing every one was fantastic to watch. And I swear, the Chris Rock one was so accurate that if you closed your eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the impression and the real guy.

This episode was interesting to me, in the sense that I laughed at every sketch, but I don't think I'm going to remember these in a week from now, except for maybe the Trump ad. I did find myself wondering if the baby in the SoCal sketch was actually Taran's youngest, because that kid seemed remarkably comfortable with both Taran and with Kyle.

Five years ago I would have never thought I'd be saying this, but WU is becoming the only part of the show worth watching.  The writers are wasting one of the best head-to-toe casts the show has ever had.

As someone mentioned, there virtually was no monologue.  How many news-show formats were there, if you consider a news broadcast was included in the wrestling sketch-- three?  I had they impression they spent too much time on the wrestling sketch and scurried to write the rest of the show.

Wow, this show is getting savaged in reviews.  No, it wasn't great.  But I have seen far worse.  It was no where near January Jones bad.   I have always found him overrated as a host.  I was just relieved we didn't get that six year old as a Borscht Belt comedian.   That may be affecting my judgement, but I really enjoyed the Cold Open and Update.  I wondered why Jay doesn't do as many Update segments as he use to when he started.  His impressions are golden.

I think "The Champ" short was better of the sketches with the theme of Jonah Hill being humiliated. I laughed at how it was even a bigger story than the neighbors being murdered by Eric McCormack! The "Murder Mystery" sketch was a little too much(although I did like Kate McKinnon's Downton Abbey maid accent).

I missed everything after Update, but I really liked Update and The Champ, and it was really nice to see Jason Sudeikis again as Romney.

Jay Pharoh is a both an insanely talented impressionist and a pretty good actor who gets better all the time (which I most often notice in the pretaped bits). He needs someone on the writing staff specifically to write for him and his strengths going forward, though, because he kind of blends in until he pulls out something like that tour de force of impressions that he did on Update and shows some real star power.

I agree with vb68 that for the show as a whole, I've definitely seen much worse.

My favorite bit was News  From The Future! It was short and funny, predictable as it was.

I was happily surprised to see Sudekis.

Bless Vanessa Bayer! She is such a great player and her interview with Flossie was fun, if a bit too long.

Hope Sasheer gets more to do next week!

I think Vanessa would be awesome in a dark roll in a movie.  We got a glimpse of that in the Santa Baby (I think it was called) skit.  She'd do a good Single White Female type.

If you haven't seen the real Flossie interview, you really must. The real plays like she's at a dog shelter or something. Poor Flossie. She's 110, leave her alone!

I thought this show was horribly weak. I did like the cold open, the monologue, and the racists for Trump short. WU was good, if not long. The whole show played like they were at a loss for live sketches and the show ran short too.

I saw only one reference to the ep before I watched, and that reference was bad. I didn't think this ep was that bad. Lots of good bits, actually.

The best part of the Cold Open was Bobby as Christie. Perfect. I have a couple of questions -- I didn't see much of what they referenced, but did Hillary say anything like, "Thank the effing Lord"? I'm guessing not, but I wondered. Another question: Did CNN really do a huge closeup of Ted Cruz's face? Also -- and I hate asking this because it grosses me out -- did Cruz actually eat a white booger on his lip? (I tell ya, I'm literally grimacing as I type this.)

Racists for Trump was good.

I really enjoyed the local news show from Wisconsin. Of course the accents were funny, but the whole thing was kinda charming. My favorite part was Aidy as the reporter who never actually gets to report. Oh, and Taran as the old Lotto guy was really funny.

The Champ was pretty good. I wasn't expecting that. I think the poop jokes went on a little too much. Loved the left-turn about the neighbors being murdered.

I didn't like Student Auction.

WU was good. I don't particularly like the Girl at the Party thing, but I did like a few of the malapropisms like apulsive and the Zima virus. Jay's impressions were fun. I esp liked his Chris Rock and Kevin Hart. Ted Cruz as a fat Dracula is great. Loved Vanessa's interview with Flossie. I think they were both about to break as Vanessa pushed the microphone into Kate's face.

Again, all the poop jokes in this old timey murder were too much. I know that was the point, but I'm not big on poop jokes. I did like the other character, esp Cecily's, Kate's, and Aidy's. And for some reason Kenan really cracked me up when he said, "Well it was just so extreme."

I liked the Inside SoCal skit. They characters and dialog were really good.

I hated the catering skit. Jonah was awful. What was that accent? It sounded like he was going for gay, but to what purpose?

I liked Jonah in the Wisconsin newscast and the SoCal bit, but I thought he was pretty bad in everything else.

Jay was, by far, the best of the show in our house! Not a fan of Jonah Hill, so didn't expect much from him, nor did he change that opinion.

I actually liked Future's part of the monologue, but then he fell flat with his two songs. When is that damned auto-tune going to be put out to pasture?

This week Cecily's boobs were featured much more than Sasheer, the new guy and Leslie (didn't miss her at all).

I loved Jay's impressions. I listened to that bit without looking at the screen, and I would not have been able to tell the real from the imitations.

I thought the show overall was decent. It wasn't going on any top 10 lists, but it was amusing enough o watch, and nothing bombed so hard that I wound up FF'ing, which used to happen a lot. I agree it seemed like they forgot to write the monologue and went into panic mode at the last minute, but I was glad they addressed that Hill wasn't promoting anything; I wondered why he was hosting, and whether he had a project that we were supposed to go see and I just hadn't heard about it for some reason. I was glad not to see the child character Hill has used before, and I thought the murder/bathroom investigation had some good qualities even though it leaned too heavily on the bathroom catastrophe by the end. It wasn't their worst of this genre, though. I mean, they did sneak in a few truly funny beats despite the premise.

Basically, I think this cast is so good, they can make even shitty writing watchable. And none of them are so inherently annoying (and they don't repeat the most annoying sketches constantly like they did during the Wiig era) that I cringe just to see them. I'm usually glad to see them and wondering what they'll do, actually. So I tend to be happy with the actors even when the writing is disappointing, and that keeps me from finding episodes overall unwatchable.

I loved "Racists for Trump"-- this primary season almost makes that kind of humor too obvious, but I wasn't sure the show would go there, after they gave the dude a hosting spot. I did boycott that episode, but I heard it got good ratings. I'm not sure if I'll be able to laugh if the guy actually gets elected, though.

I was actually offended by the auction skit. Despite that, I did laugh when the dad took the $500,000 and wished his kids a good trip. Likewise, not a fan of Fond Du Lac News. Mixed feelings about Inside SoCal. It's a thin line between what's funny and what's just so rude and annoying that I'm sick of it.

It's a little sad that I didn't hate this show and that is the bar with which I measure my enjoyment. There were some good bits. Very disappointed in the murder mystery sketch though. I was excited when it started and then devolved into a big poop joke.

And I don't generally mind pre-taped bits but they seemed in abundance tonight. I didn't see why the loser athlete skit needed to be pre-taped. With a little effort it could've been done live. There wasn't really anything that required the pre-taping.

It probably helps that there's no anointed one to the degree that there were in previous groups (Wiig, Fallon, etc.).  There are certainly tiers but that's fine since some cast members are more versatile.

I wonder if Darrell is secretly hoping for Trump to win.  In his last couple of seasons he was pretty much paid to show up and do one impression per episode so he should try to negotiate a return to the cast if that happens and cash in.

I wouldn't put it that way. For some reason, it was the way Kate said it that led me to wonder if Hillary said something that could be twisted into that line. I've already deleted the ep from my DVR so I can't revisit it. Eh, I don't know. Maybe it's just that I didn't like the line and so thought maybe it was kinda an exaggeration/distortion of what Hillary said.

Or never mind.

Well that was a bit of a dud.  I fell asleep during the 1st song, and am not really feeling motivated to watch the rest on demand.

Is that a record for shortest monologue?

The cold open might have been funnier, but between the Daily Show, Nightly Show, and Colbert, I feel like I've heard most of those jokes before this week.

I approve of the Trump as just for its brazenness, but the other sketches just weren't funny for me.  Let's laugh at folksy Wisconsinites and unpopular high school students (that last one just felt more mean than funny).

Didn't they just do that joke with the Weeknd Update? I still laughed.

They did something similar earlier in the season when The Weeknd was the guest - they broke away to do "The Weeknd Update". And yeah, like you, I still laughed at "News from The Future", and embarrassingly, I didn't get it until they actually cut to Future.

Wow, this show is just unwatchable at this point. I guess this is what happens when you become an arm of the Clinton campaign.

The whole Trump and his supporters = racists meme being pushed by the media and the Establishment is so tired at this point. The majority of my friends openly supporting Trump on FB are non-whites.

SNL has just become so predicable and lame, it's sad.

Also, why is Inside SoCal shot in SD even though it takes place in the present? THIS is driving me nuts. The skit is terrible, so why do I even care???

I think it had to do with the tone they were going for. I agree that a lot of the sketches that are pre-taped on this show could work as live sketches with some finessing, but the tone would have totally changed if it had been done live. When they're done pretaped like this (very dramatic, with the music) it helps set up the tension of, "What's wrong with this scenario that we're going to start laughing about?"

And they need pre-taped bits to pad the show anyway and give the cast more time for costume changes. Three has been the average lately.

While this was far from the best show of the season, I'm surprised by all of the really negative episode reviews as well. Other than the monologue (which was ridiculous, and thankfully, very, very short), I laughed at every sketch. Even is some of them were subpar. I think Jonah Hill is really funny, and he seemed game for anything, which I always appreciate in a host.

And this...I really enjoy the current cast they have right now, so even when a sketch may not be the greatest, or very well written, I find the cast usually still finds a way to sell it and make it funny.

I think Weekend Update was the strongest part of the show. So glad Jost and Che have found their groove this season. A looser approach definitely works for them. I think my favorite joke was the Donald Trump dong measurement joke. I almost did a spit take of my beer. And all the guests were great as well. (I think Vanessa Bayer mihght be one of the most underrated cast members right now. She always kills it, in my opinion.)

I don't understand the question. San Diego still exists. Why would it being "in the present" preclude involving San Diego? It's not like they claim it takes place in New Amsterdam, but is also the present.

I believe the poster meant "SD" as Standard Definition (vs High Definition), not San Diego.

Though, to that point, I don't actually think the Inside SoCals necessarily take place in the present - I always pegged them as something that took place in the late 90s/early 2000s. As a high school student then, I certainly knew kids like that at that period in time, and that's usually the time period the Good Neighbor sketches (even their ones previous to SNL) seem to mine their humor from.

Yes, sorry for the confusion, SD = Standard Def. However, the on screen graphic for the woman who had the breast reduction stated her breasts "died" in 2016. Which would mean all this takes place in the present.

Hillary Clinton IS desperate and WILL do anything to get elected, but that isn't how I see the impression. Her Hillary comes off as sad and somewhat sympathetic. Last year, when it appeared she would cruise to the nomination, I think her impression had more of a bite. Now that she's struggling in the primary, it's a more flattering portrayal. Basically, Hillary always "wins" in the skit, she never gets her comeuppance.

I am not a Trump supporter, can't stand the guy, but this whole leftist tactic of trying to shut people down by calling them racists/bigots is getting old. In my personal experience I know many minorities who are supporting Trump, so this story that the media is trying so hard to push really feels like a lot of bunk. I'm sure Trump has some racist supporters, just as I'm sure Hillary has racist supporters... Hell, Bernie said some racist shit in the democratic debate last night, but something tells me the media will give him a pass.

The wrestling skit was the best part -- I have to say I think about that scenario nearly every time a "special" child is given that kind of experience by other kids, especially when they're eloquent enough to be interviewed for the piece (and obviously will be wanting to see themselves on tv).  I always wonder how the parents finesse it.

I loathed those "I'm six!" sketches, but I'd much rather watch one of those than the horrific final sketch where Jonah Hill played a caterer.

He couldn't even pronounce his lines clearly, despite screaming them all at the top of his lungs! Something was just...off with him in a lot of the sketches.

Yes, that apparently happened. I know the media reported on it. Thankfully I didn't see it live.

According to many people who have had them, what appeared on Cruz's lip (which he subsequently swallowed) was a tonsil stone. I don't know if that makes it any more or less disgusting. I assure you that it was absolutely revolting to watch.

Also, within the context of the sketch, it feels like the characters borrow their filming equipment from their college's TV studio/AV club, and at many colleges (including my own, which is a relatively expensive private school), the technology they have available is woefully out of date.

That caterer sketch must have come up around the writers table as a result of a little too proud of themselves caterer was present. I know I've encountered them in my office setting, though obviously not to the Jonah Hill character levels.

How can you have a sketch about Jonah reporting on a woman getting breast reduction surgery and not have him utter the line "That's like slapping god across the face for giving you a gorgeous gift."

Finally last time Jonah hosted, there was a skit about him leaving the bathroom of a game show in complete annihilation. I wonder if the similar joke payoff in a completely different setting is actually tying to something about Jonah's bathroom habits, or maybe he just really hates those kind of conversations, which I could image run rampant in the writers room.

Rather than ripping on an episode that was so unfunny that even the studio audience wasn't laughing, can we just appreciate the genius of Jay Pharoah's monologue on Update. Impressions were perfect, especially Eddie and Chris Rock, many of the lines were funny (Fred Flintstone is my biological father) and it was so good even he couldn't stop cracking up!

By the way, anyone else notice that the closing credit scene went longer than usual-some sketch must have gotten cut or shortened.

And yet the graphics they use are very current with moving animations, etc. I work in TV so I notice these things. And I never pictured these guys as college students, 1 of them has a baby after all, I just imagined they're aimless 20-something "dude-bros" who are all about skating, surfing, wearing Hurley and drinking Monster energy drinks.

No, but there haven't been many.

+1 on the praise for Jay's impressions.  Was there a Bernie Mac in there somewhere?  I'm trying to think of who he may've missed (aside from Cosby, which would have deflected the bit, IMHO)  Many people wouldn't recognize Eddie Griffin and he's probably not in the same tier as the others anyway.

He did Bernie Mac at the end, prompting me to wonder why Bernie would be there since he's dead, which then Jost pointed out, which then ended the bit since Jay then said "yeah I made it up".

In fact it seemed like he only did the Bernie Mac impression so they could end the sketch because of it. I actually didn't enjoy that aspect of it.

Not only is Flossie real, but there was a story back in January about an unbeaten wrestler who let a boy with Down's win. I saw the video on FB. Thus sketch REALLY bothered me. :/

I fell asleep shortly after the monologue and woke up again during Jay's impressions, so it sounds like I spared myself some painfully unfunny skits. Though the caterer one was awful enough to make up for any suffering my nap saved me.
