Oh Boo. How I hated you in the first season, especially towards the beginning. How you have grown and become amazing. To be so compassionate to Tucky of all people...

So Healy and Caputo are cut from a similar cloth. They do a nice thing as a way to run up a bill on someone and get mad when the person refuses to acknowledge the transaction. Caputo totally noticed Judy (?) eye-fucking Hank and swooped in the opportunity to have a woman out of his league and an instant family. But she also went to him knowing he would do exactly that. It was gross how she tossed him like used laundry and told him it was his own fault.

Being a "stand-up-guy" and expecting to be rewarded is a total recipe for failure. He needs to find self-satisfaction in the action itself, not in people's approval for it.

I am so glad that Big Boo absolutely will not stand for Tucky justifying her rapes to herself. I don't know wth they're going to do though, they need Lorna to get her psycho jail fanatic legion to go after him.

man. #TeamBoo (and i hated her too). I loved how she made Tucky realise it was not right. (and it broke my heart, that it is rapes- plural)

On a story-telling angle, I am glad this is happening to Tucky. the 1st (two) seasons they just pretty much pushed this under the rug with Bennett falling in love with Daya, and then taking advantage of  Porn-staches nasty tendencies (and people actually wanting to 'do it' because of favours)  vs. Tucky was nice to a guard, and the guard is clearly, utterly raping her. May Doughnuts and MCC get smacked down.

The Angie slash Sara Rice made my eyes roll so hard, these newbies are so dumb. I did like the Black Guard (i forget her name) stating why the seniors are so good at their job. i will never understand why hiring more people and paying them less saves money vs. having less people and paying them more it should all balance out right?

Miss Rosa!

Somewhere during season 2 Caputo became my favorite character, so I was really excited to see his unexpected backstory, but I think I gasped out loud during that opening scene with Fig- Eww, gross indeed! I love that he seemed to model his facial hair on his wrestling coach, and the fact that his band was opening for Glass Tiger made me far happier than it should have. He certainly has tons of flaws, but like him, I tend to root for the under dogs.

Loved seeing Boo go into protective mama bear mode with Tucky, and it's a good pay off for their relationship that has been steadily growing since last season. I'm scared to predict where this will go, but I'm cautiously optimistic at the moment.

I don't even recognize Piper at this point. I don't mind her storyline per se, but the execution is a big wtf for me- why is she risking so much to do this? Why is she so carelessly throwing away her relationship with Alex, after all they've been through? How is she so jolly and chilled out about all of it? It doesn't make sense to me.

My guess is that irony thy name is Chapman. Piper is my nature conniving and someone who would exist extremely well inside prison especially now that they ended the often awkward fish out of water story. Piper is conniving because she is a coniver. Nicky screws up because she is a screw up. I think the lesson is prison and the people in them live in a circle of what they are.

I don't think Caputo and Healy are at all similar. Healy never roots for anyone but himself. The way he went after Birdie was just gross. I so want her to come back and kick his ass. Actually, maybe once Boo and 'Tucky are done with Rapist Guard they can focus on Healy! I'm sure that the guy playing Healy is lovely and I gotta say, he is really good because Healy just makes your skin crawl.

I didn't like Caputo much in earlier seasons. I really didn't much like the whole Fig-Blow job thing from last season. But I did like him this episode. And do now hope he doesnt get screwed by MCC and the dickbag son.

I loved Boo this episode. I like her and Tucky. I liked her outrage. I loved how she helped Doggett realise it wasn't okay. Considering how they started these two are an awesome pairing.

Caputo has the occasional gross moment but he will ultimately do the right thing because he believes in treating people fairly.

What I like about Caputo is that for the most part he seems to be just a guy trying to do a job and do it well--he wants the prison to run smoothly and he wants the prisoners and guards treated fairly--but he's also not at all a heroic sort of guy. He won't stick his neck out too far and he's not above taking advantage of a situation for his own benefit.

Oh, Boo, I knew I could trust you on this! I just loved how she tried to help Dogget. I can't wait to see that guy going from guard to inmate. I mean, Caputo isn't the kind of guy who wouldn't do the right thing about this so I'm pretty sure donut guy will get what he deserves.

Piper is way over her head. She doesn't even care her business could get her more time in prison.

Poor Sophia! She made a mistake when she blamed Gloria's kid but that was a problem between Gloria. Otoh, as much as I find that bullying disgusting, the general acceptance was a bit unrealistic. And Sophia isn't free of prejudices either. I hate when people say women are bitchier than men. In fact, the most bitchy aggresive-passive person in that prison is Healy.

I really don't get the acting coming from Schilling or maybe it's the writing. But like you say the storyline isn't bad but the execution of is so weird. Like nothing gets to Piper anymore. Has she shown any emotion this season at all? She is reacting to almost everything with a detached goofy expression that makes her seem like she is either going nuts or is on drugs.

I have loved Boo from the beginning - but then again Mrs Boiler and I have friends like her, so she doesn't seem as off putting to us.

I LOVED how Boo put it in to perspective for Tucky - and how they have bonded.

Caputo's back story was all about his choices in life, and how being a stand up guy screwed him over.  So is his choice to lead the union formation another instance of doing something to look good to others that will screw him in the end?

I think Piper is going to be screwed over by this venture the same way she was screwed over by the drug venture and ended up in jail.  She is not learning.  She thinks she has things under control and can handle it when she is in fact naive, power hungry and not as smart as she thinks she is.  She couldn't even figure out the union problem without enlisting red.  This is going to end badly for her, with a huge increase in her prison time

However, I actually thinks that is a writing choice to keep her in the story somehow.  If she is released she is off the show, for the most part.  I think they are finding a way to keep her in prison.  She screws this up and gets more time in jail.  And that means they feel she is ciritical to the show, which is an overestimation in my opinion of her character's importance.  I'd still watch if she was not on the show.

What that woman did to Caputo was descpicable.  She knew what she was doing from the beginning, never planned to stay with him, should have just told him that from the start.  Caputo has certainly grown on me this season.

Also I think that girl is lying, she is not schizophrenic and doesn't think the NSA or anyone is plotting against her.  Still think she will try to kill Piper.  And the Australian chick is probably in on it too

My poor Soso -- I've had women bitch about my hair, call me a "bitch" for having nice hair, laugh at me if I have a misfortune with it, accuse me of wearing a wig -- not kidding -- and it's the easiest/greatest problem to have -- but of course I feel for Soso.

That girl that Kaputo was dating in the 90's was very beautiful.  I was so distracted by how much she looked like Alicia Silvertone with the colouring of Sherilyn Fenn -- a great 90's combo!

This episode, I finally noticed how crooked Kaputo's nose is -- it looks bashed in from the side.  Now I can't not concentrate on it.

Poor Caputo. Part of his shitty lot in life is bad luck (the dislocated shoulder) and part of it is wanting to be a hero and making bad choices because of it (leaving his band for his shitty girlfriend). He's kind of a sad sack in that way, but he genuinely wants to do the right thing and do right by the women in his care. He's a good guy and I can't help but like him.

Yay for the Rosa sighting! Wasn't expecting that.

I might be in the minority, but I liked Piper firing Flaca. Flaca is annoying and a show-off pain in the ass, and it was satisfying to see her gloating be shut down. Piper is now the "corporation" controlling its workers that she railed against when she was shown her sewing-machine post. Full circle.

If everyone is a part-time employee, they don't have to pay for health insurance and other add-ons.

The land of the free, land of opportunity, strikes again.

I cheered when I saw Miss Rosa! It was awesome and unexpected.

I was so touched by the scene with Poussey and Crazy Eyes. They brought tears to my eyes. Just wanting to be loved by someone and not having it.

I really like Caputo and Boo doing what's right. The look on Tucky's face when she listened to Boo was heartbreaking. Argh it's what this show does so well.

Thank you Alex for putting spoiled bitch entitled Piper in her place over what she did to Flaca.

Funniest line for me "My people don't know this song" at the end.

Ok as a Canadian I am really confused by how health insurance in the in the US works. I thought companies offered health insurance as a benefit (like maternity leave) not a requirement. Would there be anything stopping MCC from keeping guards full time but just dropping insurance as a benefit?

Most unions demand benefits for full time employees. It's one of the perks of being unionized. They don't always for part time employees.

I'm a member of a union, but I'm a part time employee and I don't get benefits. I'm also Canadian.

I'm pretty sure the guards are unionized (at least the senior guards.)

I really liked this episode.  Boo lovingly knocked some sense into Pensatucky which was the highlight of the episode.  I also liked Piper and Alex's argument.  I think Alex is right about Piper not knowing what she's getting involved in but I can't help but feel excited for Piper.  Look at her becoming a prison lord!  And someone finally called Healy out on his baffling misogyny.  He'd be such a better person without that prejudice.  He might have even been able to connect with his mail order wife.  I hope the new councilor is back.  And I'm thinking that the Ruby Rose girl may be the assassin but I feel like that's too obvious

I'm also really worried about Brooke.  She looks like she's heading towards a suicide attempt.

I have never liked Alex in almost three seasons, but I finally liked her when she told Piper that she has no idea what she's getting herself into and then dumped her. Piper is being ridiculously thick headed and it is going to bite her in the ass.

I don't understand why she needs to go through the whole process of stealing someone's cell phone to put money in the girls' accounts. Wouldn't it be easier for her to call her brother (you know, from the pay phone) every few days and have him do that for her? They could work out a very simple code. He doesn't need to know the girls' names or anything. She could just label each card A, B, C, etc. and tell him which ones to add money to whenever they turned in their laundry bags. That seems a lot less risky than using a stolen phone. She could get busted by the guards for having contraband or she could get in trouble with whoever the phone actually belongs to.

While I never liked Angie, I can't blame her for taking this opportunity to get out. It's not like she planned this elaborate prison escape. I liked that she at least asked if she could finish her soda before going back to prison.

My fear is that Pearson's little speech about how Caputo should do something to benefit himself is what motivated him to help the guards unionize. What if he is doing this to keep tabs on them so he can then report them to MCC? I know it would be a stupid thing to do because he needs the old guards. Clearly the new ones have no idea what they're doing (and the flaw in the computer system isn't helping things either). If the old guards are all fired, Caputo and the prison will be screwed even more than they are now.

Daya's mom is such a shit stirring bitch, egging on Gloria. It is ridiculous that their interpretation of the situation is that Sophia is keeping Gloria from her son. It is not Sophia's family's obligation to take Benny up to the prison. If Sophia is keeping Gloria from her son, then so is every other person in the world who isn't offering to drive Benny to prison every week.

It was painful to watch Boo get Pennsatucky to admit that Coates raped her, but at least she finally got through to her.

Sadly, Brooke is right. Norma's message of kindness and acceptance is being overshadowed by Leanne's rules and the us vs. them mentality that the other members of the group have developed against Brooke. I totally get that Brooke is annoying, but kindness and acceptance aren't supposed to be directed only towards people you like. I am so tired of the racist shit that Leanne says to Brooke. I kind of want Brooke to cut off Leanne's hair in her sleep now. Leanne's desire to be part of a group seems to be manifesting itself as wanting to be an exclusionary bitch. Norma is too busy accepting jello and candy from her followers to do anything to get the group back to her original message.

I cannot stand Leanne. I don't even care that she was shunned and felt she had to leave home. That doesn't seem to have given her the least bit of perspective or human empathy. What she did to Soso - and then making faces and obscene gestures to punch it home - was really awful. Plus, she's ruined Norma's group. For that, I also blame Norma. Norma is getting on a little power trip of her own. She seems to be liking the savior role and the presents a tad too well.

Thank goodness Boo talked to Doggett. I was so depressed after last episode, I wasn't sure if I would finish the season. Never liked Boo before, but she has taken a big step up in this storyline with Doggett.

Don't like Alex at all, yet she was right about Piper, and I'm glad for her that she's disassociated herself from the panty scheme and from Piper. I agree with those who say Piper is weird this season.

Looks to me like Caputo is acting true to form in helping the guards to unionize. When the scheme fails, and he suffers consequences, he'll probably feel resentful because no one will thank him. He jsut can't seem to learn - has a need to play hero, even at a cost to himself.

Hmm. I read the scene in the bar differently. It felt to me that Joe was reverting back to being the "hero" again, against his own interest. Pearson tells him that he could do well for himself with MCC (promotion, maybe more money) if he plays ball, but instead of doing that, he chooses to be the hero/savior of his employees who are trying to unionize without having a clue how to do it. In other words, by leading the union, he's holding the door open again (although, this time, he was asked to).

THIS. So much. Because the Piper we came to know (and hate) in Seasons 1 and 2 didn't behave this way. And while I agree that much of it is practical in nature--the mistaken belief that the show needs Piper--it also seems super weird and out of character to me. Like, yes, Alex has grown uptight and paranoid but at this point she's sort of morphed into Piper (obsessive, anxious) and Piper has morphed into Alex (brazen, reckless). And for the love of God, they are the two WORST characters on the show already, so some character consistency wouldn't be the worst thing. On the other hand, though, I actually like Piper better now that she's less sanctimonious and holier-than-thou.

Since Obamacare, it's basically true that if you have full-time employees, you must offer benefits, regardless of whether or not employees are unionized. http://obamacarefacts.com/obamacare-employer-mandate/

I liked how as soon as Caputo decided to call the marshals to track down Rice; i.e., what you should do, Pearson backed right down.

Healy wants praise for any good thing he does while Caputo just wants the occasional thanks, which is perfectly reasonable and normal.

I don't even know if he wants the thanks. I think he wants to be treated fairly (including salary, benefits, etc.) for doing good work and the latitude to do that work. He's not arguing for 40 hours of guard training for fun or so he can yell at the new guards.

I'm hoping this comes to a head because he's been really put upon, and I think something hugely awful is going to happen that he warned about. Of course, they'll find a way to blame him.

Unlike most people here, I liked Piper during the first two seasons and felt she was integral to the show. I enjoyed her as the main character, even, but part of that is that I prefer shows that have a main character as opposed to ensembles, which tend to lead to scattered, mushy storytelling.

Right now though? I have no idea what's going on with her. The writing is off, the acting is even more off, and she seems as out of character as prison-issue-Pornstache. She isn't poor, she isn't desperate, there's really no need for her to steal from her employer and start an illegal business. There's no way this is going to end well, and the woman from seasons one and two would have seen that. Worse, the transition from old Piper to this new person was sudden and jarring. I can't plot a character path from where she was in season two to where we are now.

The best I can come up with is that the writers wanted to demonstrate how prison can turn someone incarcerated for minor offenses into a more sophisticated criminal. I think I'd enjoy that story, if well told, but this plot just isn't working for me. Piper might as well be a completely different character, and her showboating antics are seriously grating on my nerves. Firing Flaka was the last straw. She went from seeming like a real person to Master Criminal Barbie.

It is ridiculous that their interpretation of the situation is that Sophia is keeping Gloria from her son. It is not Sophia's family's obligation to take Benny up to the prison.

Thank you. She should be grateful that Sophia had her son transported to the prison as many times as she did. It's called a favor, FFS. It seems like the show wants us to believe that they both have equally valid points, but I sure don't see it.

The Flaca firing was from Red's advice on being a crime lord. Flaca was going to be a troublemaker, and if you're going to be the boss, you have to let all them know they could go at any time unless they fall in line. Piper's in over her head, but if she's giving Red 8%, she's going to get good advice.

I have to disagree.

I don't think Caputo ran up a tab, but rather, was in love and either didn't notice or ignored the obvious. Caputo didn't "swoop" in, they were already together and they were together before Judy and Hank slept together. When they got back together, Judy realized that she was pregnant with Hank's baby. And how was she out of his league? She was pretty, but what don't know if she had anything else going for herself besides that. Furthermore, Caputo wasn't trying to have a family or an instant one--his girlfriend was impregnated by another man and Caputo stayed with her and stayed around to raise the child because he loved her.

Caputo shouldn't thought long and hard before he sacrificed his career, but Judy definitely comes out looking the worst.

What that woman did to Caputo was descpicable.  She knew what she was doing from the beginning, never planned to stay with him, should have just told him that from the start.  Caputo has certainly grown on me this season.

Yeah, she was despicable. I think she did plan to stay with him, but she was settling because she just wanted to be with Hank so bad--she probably even intentionally got pregnant considering her behavior before she told Caputo. But, even if it hadn't been her intention to leave, you don't just leave someone like that. Caputo didn't deserve some gratitude and to feel appreciated. He wasn't told to give up everything, but when you love someone, there's certain things that don't need to be asked OR things they will sacrifice for that person.

Tough love from Boo was good, can't wait to see Donutman burn.

Maybe not a popular opinion but I would've done the same thing Piper did about Flaca. Yah know. If I was running a prison panty ring. The complaint was reasonable and I would have listened if it was brought to me fact to face but going behind me? Trying to undermine me? For a little power trip (ignoring the striking parallels between Flaca and Piper here for a bit)? Yeah, you gon' get burned. As for Piper's actions being weird or OOC, kiiiiiinda? But she's always been drawn to being 'naughty.' It's why she ended up with Alex in the first place. She likes that risk. What she doesn't like is when that risk is delivered. I fully expect something bad to happen and her to come crying to Alex posthaste.

Stella is distractingly attractive.

Healy continues to make my skin crawl. Glad Berdie called him out. Now if only someone would shove him down some stairs.

Caputo tries to do good and life consistently kicks him in the teeth. I DID agree with the baby-momma when she said he should take some responsibility for his own actions though. You too often get the noble martyr who refuses to take any responsibility for their position. Constantly responding to the needs of others doesn't obviate your initiative in choosing to respond. All that being said, he strikes me as a genuinely good person. One of the few on the show.

Wondering whether the candy shank is gonna be used on Alex? Cuz you just know that's gonna happen. Too many red herrings throughout the season to be otherwise.

It's not just you, us Americans are confused too.   We're just grateful when we have it, and we keep our fingers crossed that whatever happens to us is covered.

I don't know for sure if it's a requirement, but I know lots of jobs are not considered full-time just so they don't have to offer benefits, so there must be some connection. Like I know adjunct professors have a hard time because they basically do all (?) the work of full time professors but without the benefits. Maybe it's just state and federal jobs (like prison guard or state college prof) that are required to provide benefits with full time positions?

I'm also curious if somewhere along the way it costs more to cover people who work in potentially dangerous jobs, like prison guard.  Not that the guards themselves would pay higher premiums, just that someone down the line might...anyone know?

I LOVED how Boo put it in to perspective for Tucky - and how they have bonded.

I very much like that Boo knows how to make the point relatable for Tucky,  and doesn't speak down to her or make her feel stupid.

I completely agree. I don't know that she's be missed if she was gone.

I'm actually wondering if he's undercover for MCC.

I wondered about that too for a moment, since it seemed like these flashbacks might be leading up to Caputo deciding to break with the past practices that haven't gotten him anywhere in favour of looking out for #1, but I don't really know that he could accomplish all that much undercover.  The scene reads far more like Caputo getting sucked back into his old habit -- albeit, in this case the people were clearly asking for his help (though the wrestling kid was asking to fight somebody, if not him specifically).

I could've written every paragraph you did!

Miss Rosa: YAY! I called out her name joyfully when I glimpsed her.

Caputo is still one of my favorites. Everyone has ugly streaks, and the right (wrong) situations can expose and deepen them. Caputo seems to have been a good guy, more than a bit naive, who bought the story that being the good guy was enough. The for-profit takeover of the prison reinforces every blow to that principle he's endured.

The dialogue stuck into his wife's mouth though was too pat, too on-the-nose. It wouldn't come out of a human in a stressful conversation. It was more the language of a therapist, after having observed the two individuals and parsed out their patterns with each other. Ham-handed.

My favorite element of the Boo/Tucky confrontation: its utterly non-traditional tactics. Unlike the Caputo/wife scene, Boo didn't mouth a bunch of correct, measured language you'd expect from a trained sexual-assault counselor. Instead, completely Boo-like, she blasted in there with insults and a filthy mouth and bullied Tucky into seeing the assault differently, then unleashed the love.

I've enjoyed and mostly believed the evolution of their relationship, because of its consistent, explicit arc. One phase of their interaction leads believably into the next, with no jarring, inexplicable shifts.

Piper? Completely the opposite. My brain shuts down now whenever she's on the screen. The writers aren't bothering, so why should I?

I <3 Caputo, and how can you not feel for a guy who foolishly threw away fame and fortune as a rock star to work as a prison guard and raise his friend's baby?  Another entertaining back story from this season (though I think I liked Norma's the best).

Piper? Completely the opposite. My brain shuts down now whenever she's on the screen. The writers aren't bothering, so why should I?

I feel the same way.  It's funny how the character this show was built around has become the least likable or interesting to watch.  I simply don't care about her and her self-absorbed life.

Instead, completely Boo-like, she blasted in there with insults and a filthy mouth and bullied Tucky into seeing the assault differently, then unleashed the love.

I like their dynamic, and I think Boo has really come into her own as a character this season instead of just being comic relief.

Lastly, it was great seeing Rosa again - and with hair! - even if only in a flashback.

The first scene with Caputo fucking Fig was pretty shocking but awesome. I feel sorry for Caputo after knowing his backstory. Poor guy! Giving up his shot at fame and taking a prison job for a woman who doesn't love him back. Boo talking some sense into about rape was great. Yes Boo and Tucky are both moving up my list of favorites. I am with those who think Chapman's dirty panty business is going to blow up in her face and quick. Does anyone know if Laura Prepon is coming back next season? I have a feeling this season may end with her getting shanked. Love Admiral Rodcocker! LOL now I can't think of anything else when that bald guard appears onscreen. On a different note, the actor who played Hank was hot, like a young Brad Pitt. They are really hitting it out of the park this season with the good looking male guest stars, like Hank, Tucky's red headed boyfriend from the last episode, Lorna's prison pen pal whom she sent to beat up Christopher etc. The male talent this year is much more attractive than the last 2 seasons when we had, yikes, Jason Biggs and Pornstache!
