This made me laugh.  A church I used to attend had an annual men's fellowship barbeque.  The only rules:  No women and no vegetables.

I should add that this was not a Bible study or class in any way.  This was just a chance for the men to get together.  I'm sure the beer and wine flowed freely.  The women had their own thing once a year, too.

I watched Jill's hateful video on Facebook.  I have to admit that I laughed at the way she emphasized even baby showers.  It's pretty obvious where her grifting little mind is at.  I wish some LGBTQ people would offer to host a baby and grandma shower for Nurthan's baby.  There is no way she'd turn that down no matter where it was coming from.

The man camp discussion has me thinking of this toy one of my kids had. It was this weird red human shaped thing and you pulled on his arms and legs and stretched him out.

The Fundy mindset is so wrong. Being raised from birth thinking you're a superior being, just sets you up to be an asshole.

Whatever happened to, There but for the grace of God, there go I? Or does that thought evoke fear in them rather than empathy and understanding? No doubt, just like with the Duggars and Bates, one of the Rod kids is likely to be gay. Its almost too hard to think of an LGBT+ kid being raised in one of those households.

I think all these people are just terrified of anybody who seems even slightly different from them.

It does seem that humans, who are herd animals after all, do have some natural tendency to fear and shun outsiders and "different" people in favor of our own groups.

Clearly having some of that tendency is favorable in evolutionary terms, since it probably aids in the fight for resources and thus survival. If too many different people get accepted into our group and get access to our stuff, we fear there won't be enough resources for us, personally, and our genetic offspring. And that's what your own genes evolve to do above all -- protect their own ability to reproduce and survive the struggle for resources.

Possibly, just as with most or maybe all common traits, some people have this tendency to fear difference to a higher degree than average.

And then, since we're conscious beings with language, some of the super-fearful invent religions that include stories about how god or the gods actually order us to shun and hate these "different" people.

And once they've got those stories going, they can use people's also pretty natural fear of a god that will smite them down for disagreeing to win converts to their hate. That way they can easily spread the hate and the fear that underlies it and make themselves and others in their group believe that it's all righteous anger aimed at how immoral all the outsiders and "different" ones are instead. 

I think the whole business of the "manly" man camps are further evidence of how much their whole worldview arises from out-of-control fears that religion helps them turn into hatreds and angers and defensive fierceness. 

And since they live in bubbles and force their children to live in bubbles, they almost never encounter anything that could show them that their fears and hatreds fall way outside the range of useful and understandable caution. That's why homeschooling as it's mainly practiced in America is the devil, I think. 

The people who are attracted to these religions and cults on their own are all control freaks, I believe....because I'm pretty sure control freaks are mainly just these people who are especially fearful -- of difference, change, and so on. .....

And that's also why, if their access to information and other people isn't strictly controlled, so many second- and third-generation people leave or at least drift slowly away from cults and religions like this.

If you're born into the thing, but you're not a naturally highly fearful person like your parents who converted on purpose, then you may experience and learn things that show you, with your less naturally fearful nature, that all the controls and defensiveness of the cult or religion just aren't necessary and may even be harmful.

But of course the parents -- and, crucially, also the owners and operators of the religion, who take advantage of the whole situation to get money and the joy and perks of power -- busily put tons of protective mechanisms in the way to keep the children from learning anything that might open their minds to the possibility of leaving. (The parents fear for their children, too, just as they fear for themselves (that's biologically wired, too), while the religious leaders want the bucks and the obeisance!) That's the whole purpose for all their childrearing and educational practices.
