S06.E11: Let's Go Home

Recommended Posts

Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) and Camille (Bonnie Bedelia) discover a bundle of old rolls of film, and they ask Max (Max Burkholder) to develop the mysterious photos. Sarah (Lauren Graham) overanalyzes Hank’s (Ray Romano) offer with Julia (Erika Christensen), and the sisters spew their relationship fears. Adam (Peter Krause) decides the future of the Luncheonette with Crosby (Dax Shepard), but Jasmine (Joy Bryant) unexpectedly intervenes.

Oh my god, Joel at the ice rink! :::swoon:::

Anyway, the film rolls thing was silly. I get that they just wanted a chance to show old pics of the cast, so cute and all, but still. Camille, as a mom, never wanted pics of her kids? She knew Zeek took them but never wanted to see them? Is film developing such a mystery that a delicate housewife had to leave it to her man or go without? Or she couldn't take pics herself?(although, my mom never took a photo in her life, that was my dad's job, so I guess that's a thing in the older generation) Sheesh. And how many decades of film were stashed away? There were photos of the kids as babies and adults. Like I said, silly. And who calls them photographs?

Liked the scene at the end, going to your old house is such a common thing.

OH MY GOOD GOD RIP THE BANDAID OFF ALREADY. Seriously, at this point I just want SOMETHING to happen, so I find myself hoping that 'grandson' will pull a box off the garage shelf and be killed by a tumbling power drill. Or that Crosby would speed off on his motorcycle in despair over being jerked around by Adam and crash into a tree (christ, Adam. Make up your fucking mind.)

And speaking of tools, Sarah was a building super but can't put a crib together and worse yet, doesn't own a hammer?

Am I the only one who yelled "shut up bitch!" at Kristina when she was telling Adam what to do about the Luncheonette?

Just checking.

The funny thing is I actually agreed with Kristina's general point, but I find the character so annoying that I still wanted to punch her in the face.

You are not the only one. I also yelled at that rude son of hers. He's the last person in that family who needs to comment on how annoying someone's voice is.

Considering she can't get her own daughter to at least CLOSE HER DAMN DOOR, I'm not surprised. Also building things is mans work. Women folk can't do such things. I did like that there was a police siren going by as Hank walked into her open doorway. Close the door and get an actual lock.  Seriously.  Or maybe look for a more appropriate apartment.

I think Kristina was annoying when Adam was wavering but honestly the person that annoyed me the most was Jasmine.  When she was talking about doing this for THE family what she really meant was for HER family so that Crosby wouldn't throw a a fit because he couldn't get what he wanted.  He's an adult with two kids.  They really need to stop babying him.  He puts on his sad face (which he's really good at) and they have to do what he wants to do.  Actually I'm not even mad at him because he was going to at least try to go with it.  This storyline is stupid.  It's a stupid storyline to have to end the show with.

Also with the film thing.  I had to clean my dad's house last year while he was in the hospital.  I can't tell you how many rolls of film I found.  Also dog biscuits under the couch. Lots and lots of dog biscuits.

The film thing didn't bother me because I don't assume those were the only photos taken of the kids.  I assume those were some rolls taken by Zeke.   Zeke took some photos.  He didn't get them developed and Camille never really noticed about it because there were LOADS of other pictures that she or the other kids took.   Why Z couldn't get film developed?  Who knows, but I assume it is whatever gene that makes me forget to return library books.   I eventually gave up on the library.  Z gave up on photography.  Works for me.

The crib thing, however?   Yeah.   I didn't mind that Amber couldn't do it, and I say this as somebody who has known plenty of pregnant women who have put together their own cribs by themselves, thanks.   But Amber is all sorts of scattered, she's tiny, and people have different skills... see my inability to remember to return library books.   But Sarah?   Really?   Wonder how things got fixed around the apartment when Sarah has no tools.

Also, isn't she the kid Z said could rebuild a whole engine when Victor made some comment about cars being a boy thing?

Good thing Hank had free time to help Max and Amber, now that Ruby seems to have moved out of state again. When I wondered aloud where she might be, my spouse suggested it'd be cool if she were with Haddie.

Max and Hank have amazing darkroom skills, to be able to produce black and white and color photos in that set up.

Seriously, do they think we are stupid?

And all the photos were like professional portraits. Sorry, but rolls of old film would yield a TON of group photos, of Christmas and birthday parties and pictures of people nobody remembers. Not just a bunch of perfectly posed headshots.

And then Camille looks at a photo of Sarah - a photo SHE HAS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, and has a distinct memory, based only on a headshot , of the exact day it was taken, and an argument they had that day.

Oh and another photo was "the day I told him I was pregnant with Julia".

I have a large family, we have photos, and there have been discoveries of photos that had been hidden away. But there's no way in hell I'd have a specific memory of my mindset in the photo, especially when the photo was taken decades ago and I had never seen it before!!

(Confession, sometimes I see a baby picture of one of my kids and I struggle to figure out which of the boys it is. )

I wonder if that photo of a young Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson was real or just photoshopped.

I too found Kristina annoying (esp. when she's spent a lot of time and money running a campaign and now starting a school), but this is yet another time Adam does not discuss with Kristina his future with the Luncheonette--he didn't talk to her when he agreed to the partnership in the first, he didn't talk to her when he changed his mind about taking that offer from Dwayne Wayne, and he *again* doesn't talk to her when he decides to reignite the partnership.

I'd forgotten how much I didn't miss this show while it was on hiatus.

I thought Sarah could do everything?  Walk into jobs she's not qualified for, write plays, snag huge photography jobs with no experience.  But she can't put together a piece of flatbox furniture?

And +1 to everything everyone else has said.

Now I see why many Braverman relationships have been on idle over the past several episodes; seems like the writers want to align all the jumps forward into full on family support mode.

I guess that's so when Zeke hires the Berkeley based but Oregon licensed assisted suicide guide (docent?), they are all prepared to be hands on in the "letting go."

The photograph thing didn't seem strange to me--I thought they were just random rolls Zeke had taken, not the standard family holiday or command performance ones that Camille would have stuck into albums or at least passed around. There's so many photos, that may be props in future scenes as well.

Oh, gawd. When Julia suggested a list of pros and cons for Sarah marrying Hank, I was having flashbacks to Rachel discovering the list that Ross made with Joey and Chandler.

Normally I like Jasmine, but STFU. If Adam doesn't to be part of the Luncheonette anymore, she shouldn't be guilt tripping him into doing something that he doesn't want to do. I am sure that the happy ending for the show will be Adam and Crosby relaunching the Luncheonette but I don't want that to happen.

Adam clearly wants to leave and the only reason he would stay is out of obligation to Crosby. I get that he loves his brother and wants him to be happy but that doesn't mean he should stay, ESPECIALLY since when he started looking at the financials again he mentioned getting the jingle people to come back to make more money for the Luncheonette. Oh, you mean the jingle people who Crosby and Amber think are the scum of the earth not fit to be on the bottom of their shoes because their money isn't good enough for them? If Adam stays, it will be more of the same. He will keep trying to find ways to bring clients in and Crosby will keep being a snob about who is good enough to use their precious recording studio.

When Adam said, "I don't know what [Crosby] will do," I thought I don't either, but it's not your responsibility. Your are his brother, not the guardian of a six year old. In fact, you have a two year old at home, a kid in college, and a special needs kid who has been in desperate need of his behavioral specialist since Crosby slept with her five years ago. Their needs are important and those needs are going to cost a lot of money. The Luncheonette is Crosby's dream, not Adam's dream.

Zeek is as annoying as usual. He came into the house and Camille said, "Come here!" because she wanted him to look at the pictures of their family that Max had developed, but his response was, "No, I'm too excited about something else!" Seriously, Zeek? You still haven't learned to pay attention to your wife and give a shit about her feelings? Who cares what she is excited about if you are excited about something else?

I thought it was rich when Max said Sarah talks too much. Talk about complete lack of self awareness. That kid is constantly interrupting and talking over people, just like Sarah (well, and all the Bravermans).

My issue with the pictures was that several of the ones shown were clearly school pictures in front of that standard backdrop. I don't believe that Zeek went to the trouble of creating one at home just to take pictures of the kids.

Joel was an idiot, He had the presence of mind to dive under the bed and grab his phone, but after he heard Sidney say she was going to text him, he didn't bother to put his phone on silent?

I'm sure he was sincere when he told Julia he would never leave her again, but it's hard to take someone's word about how they are NEVER going to do something that they've already done, so I understood Julia's hesitation. It was really cute to see how excited the kids got when they saw their parents kissing at the skating rink though.

This is something that just makes me crazy.  IIRC, Adam and Kristina were literally bouncing checks a few episodes ago because they were not taking enough money in from the Luncheonette to cover expenses.  They have entirely legitimate reasons for not wanting to continue with the business, and I wish for once this show didn't trade in total fantasy as to the issue of money.  Now I realize that Kristina hasn't followed Jasmine into the lucrative world of part-time filing, so she has yet to taste the riches that will wash over her family after working that job for a few weeks, but give me a break.

I am sure you were not. I didn't watch the episode and just thinking about the character I yell similar words.

I saw part of an interview with Monica Potter and I had to change channels because of her voice. The actress is doomed to me.

Another episode I don't have to suffer through. Thank you guys!

I am so happy this show is ending. Just as a perspective on the latest attack on Autistic people coming from Katims' cohorts, the bosses at Autism Speaks: The last comparison is not that Autistics are health crisis, tragedies and burdens. According to A$ they are all that and now they are also "lepers" (reading between the lines, they are undesirable and not to be seen or touched) and the families, especially the parents, are "like Saint Francis" brave enough to "look at them" (Isn't this the image we are suppose to have of Kristina?).

Yes, people. Those are quotes. And it is not the worst in the latest speech (to the Pope, in the Vatican)

We got a glimpse of every kid minus Jabar (I don't count Haddie any more since tno one else remembers her)!  I think that's a first this season.  Wow the kid playing Victor got so tall and thin.  Max is still as rude as ever.  It annoys me to no end how everyone just smirks and smiles at Max's awful behavior.  He shouldn't talk to his grandparents that way, but everyone treats him with kid gloves. I hope the actor playing Max doesn't have a hard time getting other roles since he (and the writers) made Max such an unlikeable person.

How have Amber & her dopey mother managed to stay in La-La land for so long?  Amber's ready to drop that baby and her apartment looks like a college dorm room.  Aside from the crib, there is not one item that shows preparedness for a baby.  And I hope she puts an ID chip in her kid because when he/she is old enough to crawl, he/she will be out that open door and on the streets of Berkley in a minute.  SHUT THE DAMN DOOR!  And was that crib supposed to be a combo set up?  Was that 12" x 12" section on the top of the drawers supposed to be a changing table?  Amber is a tiny framed girl, but her baby will out grow that in a few weeks.

I can't even with the stupid Luncheonette plot.  Jasmine is a "Wendy" allowing her Peter Pan to flit off into Never Never Land again.  I guess her part-time filing gig is covering all the expenses now?  Let's hope she doesn't get injured on the job with a career ending paper cut.  And Kristina, enough with the passive aggressive BS.  Flaring your nostrils and quivering your voice is not how you address your husband's latest dumb ass idea.

As annoying as Max is I think the writers have made Drew very annoying as well.  All the wounded puppy scenes with this kid- GAH!  Every time that poor kid shows up I feel like there's a emo sound track following him. I hope he finishes college despite his family showing up in his dorm or demanding rides hither & yon.  Once he gets a degree I hope he lands a job on the East coast and gets away from these people.

Julia & Joe's story was the only one I liked (minus Sydney's appearances).

The writing is so contrived. Joel hides under the bed and Sydney comes into the room, insisting on texting him. A normal person would walk-guide her out the room and close the door. And would turn their phone off or at least try to sound smother it. But the writers wanted to have the awkward "why did I hear my text ping to dad?" moment so they just have Julia argue with her about the text. Ugh.

The photos were another contrivance just to show the cast's kid pics. I get that people might have undeveloped rolls of film stuffed in drawers, but now an odd assortment of colour and B&W, all ages over 25 years, and mostly head shots. It was silly and contrived and I hate bad writing like that when the same plot line could be done well just as easily.

Was put off by Sarah wearing a Barnard cap, which is Lauren Graham's alma mater.  No reason for Sarah to wear that cap.  Just too meta.

Why can't Jasmine take over Adam's role doing the business side of The Luncheonette with Amber getting an expanded role in the business going forward?  Jasmine doesn't have a job she likes; it would be in the music business which is creative, would be supporting Crosby's dream.  She would have Adam to ask questions and to show her the ropes.  This would free Adam to do whatever he wants, which I guess is making no money at Snowflake Academy.  Oh, I forgot, Adam needs to be selfless and sacrifice for his family.  I see.

Sarah is marrying Hank because suddenly he is a good, caring guy.  Could they telegraph that she is settling and not in love.  Oh, that is going to work.  They need to break it off in the final episode.

Max is so rude and it is ignored or encouraged by everyone.  His Aunt says hello, he just ignores.  He knows he should respond even if he doesn't want to.

Amber's dad gives a gift of a crib and it is his fault that it is hard to put together and this is representative of the father not being there for her growing up (and that Amber is going to be Sarah).  Just felt it was forced correlation.

Oh, a bit of a nitpick.  They used a particular date in early April 1972 as the game where Zeke got the Reggie Jackson ball.  Only problem is that "game" would not have happened, as the season was delayed 13 days by a baseball strike.

I agree, but I don't. Adam and Kristina's money problems I felt had more to do with pouring their own money into that stupid schoo more than likely and maybe the business manager of the Luncheonette being GONE ALL THE FREAKING TIME to teach cooking and (not) deal with his aggressive, selfish son.

She's 47.  That's what a 47 year old looks like ... and she looks MUCH better than a lot of women pushing 50 that i know in real life.

I agree that it looks strange though.  In the same vein, I always think Beyonce and JLo look downright thick to me when I see them in leotard-like costumes onstage performing.  And then I remember that in person, they're TINY.  And only by comparison to the lollipop heads in entertainment do they look larger.

In other news, i wish someone would kick the bucket already.  Get on with it, Bravermans.

That's what I thought while we were watching. You want a family business - keep it in your immediate family and don't chain other family members to it.  I actually made a similar mistake - I had a business with my father and a friend. Who as it turned out, couldn't get along. I chose my father (because - family) - and lost not only the friend, but the person who had the best expertise, and the business folded soon after.

As for the photos, I noticed that many of them were the photos from the credits. Also, when she had them all spread out, it reminded me strongly of photos being chosen for a funeral service. If that's what their purpose will be, I'm wondering if Sarah will be the one dying - as her photo had the most dialogue and discussion.

I was much more on board with what Kristina said re: the Luncheonette, and definitely not okay with Jasmine's interference.  I would have been upset that the other wife in the business thinks she can come in and decide what is right for everyone.  Is Jasmine going to pay for both families if the business fails?  Kristina thought it was decided, and then suddenly sees Adam getting it started again without warning her, and since it was based on Jasmine, yes, Kristina should say something.  I just don't think Jasmine had any right to interfere--at some point Crosby has to grow up and know how to deal with these things.  I guess I am glad the show is ending so I don't have to see anything more about the business.

I thought it was cringeworthy how Joel was having the "I just wanted to hear your voice" intimate conversation, while in the construction trailer with two other guys. Seemed so awkward to me. The whole Joel/Julia story line has been so unsatisfying. He will be fine with Julia working with her ex bf? What happened to Joel's attractive boss? Why did Joel leave Julia in the first place? Who knows.

Awwww, I loved it. If I had to complain, I'd say Kristina annoyed me. I understand being worried about money, but she was perfectly happy to blow money on her mayoral campaign and Snowflake Academy. She kept her sour face even when Adam was explaining that he felt he had to save Crosby the way Crosby had saved him after he lost his shoe job.

The pictures didn't bother me, even though I noticed that a few were professional school pictures from the actors' childhoods. I loved the callback to the credits we've been watching all these years.

I loved Joel and Julia. I loved that after thinking she needed a complicated process to figure out if she and Joel could truly get back together, all it really look was an earnest promise from the love of her life. I wish they'd never messed with Joel and Julia to begin with - there was plenty of drama for that family with just Victor's adoption and Sydney's (Sidney's?) awful nature. But this was great pay-off for the hell the viewer was put through. I couldn't stop smiling when they were giddy about just talking to each other.

I can buy the whole Sarah/Hank thing. Camille and Sarah's conversation was WONDERFUL, and Lauren Graham sold the moment she told Hank yes with her amazingly expressive eyes. I can also deal with the whole crib thing as a metaphor, even though it's a tired cliche that the women would need a man to put it together. Amber is very pregnant and stressed and hormonal. Sarah had been a deer in the headlights not being able to focus since the proposal. I can accept that they'd be too distracted to deal with it. I can also understand Amber's annoyance at Seth. Even though he's trying by sending a nice, expensive gift, what Amber needed was him to come and actually physically be there to help. (Or, you know, Nora's old crib.)

Drew has been fantastic this season, even though I think Zeke should have admitted that he had no right to get mad in the first place or put that kind of crazy pressure on his grandson.

Crosby with tears in his eyes got me, and I did love Jasmine going to bat for her husband. I think it came from a good place, and she doesn't ask for much of the Bravermans in general. I think it took a lot for her to do that.

I get the complaints, I really do, but I still love the show. Oh, and behavior aside, I loved that the film canister storyline gave Max a way to be connected to something sentimental to his family, even if he doesn't care. He was able to get excited about something that was also connected to his family's history and feelings. Hank being involved in the photos further connected him to the family as well.

Final complaint - it was weird that Zeke and Camille were right in the driveway of their old house watching the kids play, and neither the kids or their mom seemed to notice.

Wow, Joel was looking good tonight, of course he always has been the hottest of the men on this show for me.  When he showed up at the ice skating rink he was just looking...damn good.  I loved that the kids got to see their parents at a good state again, it made me happy for that family.

So how did Julia get the kids not to notice Joel's car/truck in the driveway/street when they left for school that morning?  Did Joel shimmy down the drainpipe in his boxers like some bad movie so he could get in his truck and then realize he left the keys in the house?

I knew as soon as Sarah and Amber were struggling w/the crib that Hank would show up and put it together and that would be when Sarah would realize he was the one and accept the proposal.

The former Braverman compound looked different to me as well, it was the grass in the yard, right?  Zeeke and Camille had mulch and not grass for all the landscaping if I recall from before.

I was also glad we were spared the scene where Kristina drives like hell over to confront Jasmine at the house about how she doesn't have any right to make Adam rethink his decision over the Luncheonette.

Personally, I thought they would keep the Luncheonette for the Snowflake Academy and use the space for Crosby to teach music, Jasmine to teach dance, and Camille to teach art for the academy, that way almost all the Bravermans could be on the payroll.

I was able to handwave the mixture of candid and professional photos because I thought that getting the candids developed would have prompted Camille to haul out a big pile of other pictures accumulated over the years.  I didn't literally take the pile on the table to have all come from Max's Mystery Rolls.  I did enjoy seeing the pictures from the credits, which I have never ever skipped in all the years of watching this show.

I thought Adam's hindsight vision overly romanticized what originally happened when he lost his shoe job, which was Crosby whining and peer pressuring Adam until he agreed to help him fund the Luncheonette. Adam was going to just get another job so it's not like he was destitute and depressed and Crosby saved him.

Yes, it seemed like the kids' play area was mostly grassy now, whereas I thought Camille had a lot of flowers and bushes that she was always watering.  And the fire pit, of course.

I thought Adam's hindsight vision overly romanticized what originally happened when he lost his shoe job, which was Crosby whining and peer pressuring Adam until he agreed to help him fund the Luncheonette. I agree - I think he did eventually get excited about The Luncheonette but he no way thought that was a great idea at first nor that Crosby was saving him.

I think the job we saw Adam applying for wasn't as good as at the shoe company, like maybe less money and it was not a managerial position.  But, he was definitely going to take it because he needed to feed his family.

I agree with whoever said that they thought Jasmine should take over Adam's role. That's what I have been thinking since the break-in. Adam is obviously ready to move on, but it seems like it would be a great thing for Crosby, Amber and Jasmine to continue on together. I still don't understand why they can't call in favors from their previous famous recording artists to get more business. They could ask for money to fund Christina's (ultimately failed) campaign, but not to keep a classic recording studio open?

Also stupid to leave the baseball in a random barn in the hopes that some random kids will find it someday. That baseball will be worth a pretty hefty sum, and he doesn't want to gift that to his sure-to-be destitute great-grandchild? Unlikely.

I completely concur with Tara's "reasons why not," especially the last one. Sigh. Why did Sarah ever pick Hank over Mr. Cyr?! I will never understand.

IMHO, the best part of the episode was Julia and Joel back together. I am glad they did actually have a discussion in which Julia reminded Joel that it's not all gonna be jumping each other's bones all the time, that she will at some point, be difficult to live with again. But, guess what, that's life! If they go to counseling, I think they will make it even in the world beyond the series. (I am aware they are fictional characters, but I still don't want them to split up.)

I was having flashbacks to the old movie Seems Like Old Times when Joel was under the bed. It was much funnier with Charles Grodin and Chevy Chase. Absurd that Julia couldn't get Sydney out of the room before she snatched the phone and sent a text.

Good call to whomever above mentioned the photos looked like the display of photos at a funeral. I could see that happening.

I don't really want fictional Julia and fictional Joel to split up, either, even where I won't see. I'm glad Julia has stopped being an idiot about Joel. But see below.

I notice that nowhere on either Camille's or Sarah's list is there an item covering "Is he a self-involved manchild who never gives a crap about your feelings or anyone else's, for that matter?"

Fine, Hank's relief and shock are cute. BUT THIS SHOULD BE MR. CYR AND WE ALL GODDAMN KNOW IT.

Cosigned, dude.

GREAT JOB WORKING OUT YOUR ISSUES, DUDES!

And once more.

Was the teaser a definite death or was it more along time lines of "The Bravermans face death"? It could just be all this Zeke might die stuff or a future conversation with his family about not getting the surgery and essentially just preparing to die.

Back to this specific episode, I think Lauren Graham and Ray Romano acted their scenes beautifully, but it's not my favorite send-off for the Sarah character. Like Tara, I'm Team Mr. Cyr, but I also would have wanted her to settle into who SHE wanted to be. I guess she's focusing on Amber and is maybe still a photographer? I guess I still don't feel like she got enough development as a character. They used her as the one to set up with romantic interests, since everyone else was married (or got married quickly, in the case of Crosby).

The prints Camille had spread out on that table were all different sizes. Certainly they would have all been the same size print if they had just been developed, with the possible exception of Hank wanting some of Sarah's to be larger.

I hated that Zeek didn't have the decency to apologize to his grandson for being an ass. Instead Zeek explains how that even though he was pissed at Drew, he wouldn't have been worrying about that while he was dying.

What's wrong with Hank's haircut, PTV? I know plenty of 50something men who would kill to have half the hair Hank/Ray Romano does. If Sarah doesn't like the cut, I'm sure she can cajole him into changing it.

I do find Hank fairly funny, and think he's shown that he can be good with Sarah's family (his talk with Drew, his support toward Amber, bonding with Max and with Joel.) I must not have been paying much attention during the Mr. Cyr episodes, because I don't really get the fascination with him. He looks like a kid, and didn't he want to have children? Which is the last thing Sarah needs more of...

Could not believe this decision.  So dumb.

Drew has been fantastic this season, even though I think Zeke should have admitted that he had no right to get mad in the first place or put that kind of crazy pressure on his grandson.

I totally co-sign this.  It shows just what a self center ass Zeke is suppose to be.  Its always about him.  He even told Drew he most likely will be mad at someone when he dies so what the hell.

I am sooooo ready for this show to end so I can have my Thursday nights back.  What started out so good is ending on such a bad and cheap note.
