Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

@Scarlett45 that is really cool about the age limit! I will definitely ask.

So I have been really excited to tell you guys about a dream I had last night! The Duggars were having a birthday party for my sister! It was soooo funny. Idk whose house it was in, but it was really crowded, dark, and dank. They had all the windows covered, and you could barely see! It was a breakfast party, because they didn't think you could be too wild at breakfast. Yet, when I got there, not late at all, they had run out of food! I picked up a piece of bread and Jessa literally snatched it out of my hand, saying that they were running low on food, so my sister and Joy needed to eat it. I understood my sister, but why joy? Maybe because of her blessing, lol?

so I sat in a room for a long time with Michelle, JB, Jana, and my dad (idk where my mom was). My dad seemed to think all of the lunacy was normal, but I hoped he was just being polite. After waiting an eternity to see if they were going to serve me some food, I announced I was going to McDonald's to get a biscuit. My dad was incredibly offended, and I said, "what? It's a breakfast party, and if there's no more breakfast, I'll just go get it on my own!"

when I returned, it was time to open gifts, in another really dark room. In this room were Jessa, Jill, joy, and Anna. I was sadly surprised to see Josh walk in, and he and Anna acted all lovey dovey, like everyone should think they were the perfect couple. Jill seemed put off by them, while Jessa was overly sucking up, like nobody knew about the scandals and they had to pretend to be perfect. As my sister opened presents, though, Anna was really nice and friendly to me. Jill gave my sister a white TV remote, because she knew she had a black one, and black is too sinful! I laughed out loud lol. Josh gave her a book he had written on the law, as the amateur wannabe lawyer he is. Somehow, it had gotten published. I had to try soooo hard not to make a snide comment, or ask why anyone would ever want to use it! Jessa said another gift was from Michelle, and it was also some sort of book with a huge photo of her and JB on the front. Then, I asked Jessa where the bathroom was, and I went off to find it. I woke up IRL having to go to the bathroom!

Hahahaha the duggars haunt us, even in our sleep! My favorite parts are the white remote and the arrogant prick thinking he could write a book about law that people would take seriously.

My stepmother is a New Orleans native (and a wonderful cook), and when I talk to her tomorrow, I can ask her about that if nobody can get you an answer before then. Just doing some tentative googling, and it seems like it's not an uncommon icing ingredient in the area, though I can't say offhand I remember her making anything like that.

The icing was on a chantilly cake if that helps. Never had one before this party and it was the best cake and frosting that I’ve tasted in decades. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Way to go, zoomama! You want your FT3 in the upper half of the range and your FT4 close to the same. After Graves and Hashi's I had to get creative with my meds. My body is an extremely poor converter of T4 to T3 so my doc has me on a combo of Naturethroid and Cytomel, which isn't common but works for me.

thanks emma. i havent seen my results yet and i am hoping my doctor mails me a copy. BUT this is what i was told: 'everything is normal. but you are a 'full blown' diabetic now. take the Rx we have called in to your pharmacy. oh and lose weight'. they started me on metformin.

I seriously recommend that you read the book Undoctored by Dr. William Davis. You may decide that his program of regaining your health is not for you - but after reading it you may darn well question why your doctor is saying "everything is normal AND you're a full blown diabetic and you must take this medication." Because IMO everything is not normal if you are a diabetic.

Type 2 diabetes is a perfect disease - for the health care industry. Because you aren't obviously sick but they get to sell you lots of medication over several years while you continue to have the disease. They* are not interested in curing the disease! I encourage you to explore ways to reverse type 2 diabetes (I assume that's what you have). Not telling you to stop the meds at this point but I hope you can take charge and end up in better shape than you'll be if you just take the meds and don't do anything else.

By changing what I eat, I've brought my a1c down from prediabetic to normal levels over the last several months, and I'm so happy about that. I still have more weight to lose and this week I've been focusing on losing some bad eating habits that have snuck back in.

Whatever you do, I wish you well. I'm not any kind of expert, just an old woman who's trying to maintain my health as the years march on by!

*Edited to add: "They" means the health care industry in general. I'm sure there are doctors who do want their patients to reverse Type 2 diabetes, but the general protocol seems to just put 'em on drugs, and eventually as it gets worse they'll be on insulin.

Plus the fact your blood sugar levels can go higher if your thyroid levels are out of whack. When my husband's blood sugar levels were dangerously high, his doctor at the VA had his thyroid levels check to make sure his thyroid levels were off.

Yes. in that book, Dr. Davis addresses thyroid problems, which he says are often undiagnosed and create other health issues including weight gain and high blood glucose levels. He also says, as several have posted here, that the TSH test is worthless, you need to test those other things that the standard tests don't. Sigh.

Exactly! The specialist I see knows what tests to order and actually does something when I am mild hypo or hyperthyroid. Not like the one unmentionable out of town doctor. I have been lucky because a few times my blood sugar levels were a little high, but the majority of the time they are looking good.

does this book address the issues of autoimmune disease in general? or is it more specific? i also have celiac and already have to modify my diet for that.  i have been monitoring my b.s. for the two full days since that phone call and not even once was it high. as for the T3-T4, that's what they were referring to as the normal result, i guess.

It's pretty comprehensive about health and I think you would find it worth a read especially if you have celiac disease. You can check him out on this website. Run a search for "celiac" and you'll get several entries. This guy is an MD who was a practicing interventional cardiologist for 25 years. He's not some fly by night dude with a sketchy PhD who just wrote some books. He really seems to know his science.

That's great what you've accomplished.

Truly.

I will tell you one big reason some doctors don't push hard on lifestyle changes - less than 10% of their patients will comply sufficiently to handle the problem.  I had some lengthy discussions with doctors, nurses, and nutritionists when step-dad was diagnosed.  His would have been completely reversible, but he was nearly completely non-compliant and I was told that was far too often the case.  Medium compliance is frequently the best that they get.  My nail technician was diagnosed with Type II (no shock you could tell within 10 minutes conversation she was heading that way).  She didn't exercise because she couldn't walk the whole 30 minutes.  I told her to walk 10 minutes 3 X a day.  She flat out lied and said her doctor told her only 30 continuous minutes would do her any good so she didn't exercise at all.  We can just say her diet stayed nearly as bad as it was before.

I totally believe this, and it's very sad. I just hope that people who really do want to improve their health, will find the tools and support to do it. I have at least one relative who's Type 2 diabetic, and seems to be happy to take his meds and eat lots of dessert. It's his business, and I hope he does okay with what he's doing.

I remembered when my husband took diabetes education classes at the local hospital, and I went with him to some of the classes. The one instructor was saying to listen to your doctor(s), follow his or her advice, exercise, taking medications, etc. etc. A couple of older women said they did not want to follow their doctor(s) advice, and no young people would tell them what to do. We got to the part where diabetes can cause kidney failure. Some of the patients were like that would really happen. I spoke up and said my husband was on dialysis for three years and just had a kidney transplant along with the fact diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. In my husband's case, one of his anti-rejection meds cause him to become a diabetic within a couple of months after his transplant. I also remember a few patients in the dialysis unit were diabetic, and a couple of them lost a foot along with losing their kidneys because their diabetes got out of control. I think the one instructor was glad I was backing her up.

I have a friend from church like this! She gets migraines, but would rather take ten different pills a day than even consider lifestyle changes! I would rather not be on all those meds! She doesn't want to give up sodas, Doritos, wine, soups, fast food, etc. Amazingly she is in her 60's and was a totally normal weight despite her horrible diet, but when she got on all those meds, her weight ballooned up, and I bet she gained 100 pounds! Even if you weren't gaining weight from the junk food, I don't get it, because she gained weight from the meds! I'd rather at least try to cut things from my diet and not have all those complications and side effects. Plus the chiropractor does me a lot of good in preventing migraines, and the only med I have to take is Imitrex when I get a severe attack. She won't try the chiropractor though, or changing her diet. I would hate to live on all those meds. Maybe that's just me though!

No, it's not just you! I'm all for treating diseases and injuries with whatever it takes to restore health. But I hope and pray to avoid getting into a situation where I'm given ever-escalating numbers of meds, when there are alternative courses of action that would restore health without so many medications (and their side effects). I think about this more than I used to, the older I get.

On taking too much medicine:

I think y’all remember when I got down to 72 lbs this winter. I think that it was my Dr prescribing too much medicine. At that weight I didn’t need a high adult dose even though my BP was high. As soon as the medication was lowered the nausea began to go away and slowly I gained most of my weight back. Even though the MDs have training, all of our bodies are different and we respond in our own special ways. We are the ones who feel effects.

So many of you are brave with your health and I applaud you.

Okay, what's going on with computer technology.  Something happened that makes me a little paranoid. I haven't been searching for anything weight related lately, but, when I went to You tube to view a music video, I got this ad video pop up, (you know, so you have to watch it, before you see your video) and it was for this tummy shaper. It looked amazing.)  But, why did they send that my way???? lol

Also, I got some alerts that some purchases were attempted on one of my credit cards.  The card company denied them!  And, that's great. Not sure how they knew to decline them, but, one was for Lift and another for Taco Bell!  The company knows that I don't use either one of those places.  But, I haven't lost my card.  The company cancelled it and are sending me a new one, but, how does that work? Did someone go into Taco Bell with my card NUMBER and try to use it?  I'm confused.

@SunnyBeBe That sounds scary. I’d go to the bank and ask them those questions. Someone could be trolling you for information. It does happen. Last year my neighbor got his statement and furniture and other stuff had been charged to his account. He hadn’t lost his card. He had to go to the bank and file a fraud case. I hope for you that this causes as little hassle as possible.

Yeah, I'm not sure how they got the card number. I suspect online.  Glad the VISA fraud alert kicke in.   The charge attempts started the day after I made this one online payment using that card. No problem till then.  Whoever they were they had low expectations. Taco bell was $23.00, the Lift $12.00, etc. Just little stuff. Makes you wonder though.

I've had that happen and my credit card company denied it and sent an alert.  I think most online shopping is very secure and the biggest danger can be from someone scanning your information from the card - I was pretty sure it was at a restaurant at which the server took my card away to run my charge and helped himself to my credit card information.  There are very few places I will let someone physically take my card, unless I can see the register where they run my charge.

My card, checking account, was hit for over $6,000 a few years ago. The first few went through, others were denied, but still appeared in my statement. I was bombarded with emails alerting me. The purchases were made from California, I’m in PA. What was really screwy.......I received a package in the mail. It was, how shall I say, a very large sex toy? So, how the heck did they do that? So creepy, but it was all straightened out.

Damn, how much did that person order to run up a $23 bill at Taco Bell?!?

zoomama, don't ever trust any doctor that says your results are "normal". There is no such word when it comes to thyroid disease. Normal is when you feel good, no matter where that number is in the range. I feel good when my TSH is practically nonexistent and my FT3 is almost above the range. An uneducated doctor would look at that and freak that I was totally hyperthyroid. But that's my normal.

I agree, but, here's my issue.  How would they steal my number and then take it into Taco Bell to make a purchase?  I mean, you would need it to insert or scan.  I can see how you could try to use it online, where you just need the card no, expiration date, code, etc., but, how is that possible in Taco Bell?

My mother has had type 2 diabetes for 20 years. At first the dr told her if she lost 10 pounds, she would not need the metformin, but she didn’t. I am sure for 20 yrs she has just taken her medicine and that was all she did to address it. Now she has stage 3 kidney disease, neuropathy, gastropareisis, and she is incontinent. I had no idea diabetes could do so much damage. Even though I know it is one of the leading killers, I thought the reason no one wanted diabetes because of what a pain it is to take the medication and measure blood sugar. If I didn’t “get it,” I am sure many more don’t either. In general she will freely admit she would rather take a pill than do anything regarding her health. .......and now she is 68, she is in terrible health, and we are looking at assisted living.

For my own health reasons, I eat a primarily plant based diet. On the forks over knives Facebook group, there are a lot of people on the diet because of major heart issues and/or diabetes. Someone will post they have been eating a vegan/plant based diet, and even eliminated oil, but their cholesterol numbers are still high. People will respond to add in exercise, and oh boy if that isn’t the straw that broke the camel’s back. They are willing to make major dietary changes, but the hell if they are going to walk 10 minutes. Time and time again I see this exchange. It’s interesting. Humans are complicated.

That's a good question - how can you charge at Taco Bell without the physical card?  I wish I had a good answer....

On a separate but related issue - last fall my purse was robbed (I put up a good fight for it, but lost my grip when I was knocked down).  The thief immediately went to a local drugstore and repeatedly tried to charge $505 and was denied and as soon as I got home after giving a police report, my credit card companies and bank had called me.  It was all horrible, but the bitch never got a dime out of it.

My mom managed her weight and exercised relentlessly and kept off meds for several years managing her diabetes.  She was amazing.  She walked a 2 mile stint twice a day for many years and had no trouble.  When Alzheimer’s got pretty bad, she couldn’t walk alone because we were afraid she wouldn’t be able to find her way home.  So we lost that exercise option and that was pretty sad for all of us.  By the time died, she made zero insulin and was treated as a Type 1.  Nightmare with Alzheimer’s.

Once, the day after Thanksgiving, the two of us walked around their yard.  Sort of a field trip.  When we started back in, she went ahead of me.  By the time I got in, she had an entire piece of pecan pie in her mouth.  The whole slice.  I said “Ima have to give you a little insulin to cover that pie”.  She says (with her mouth full, spitting bits of pie) “I ain’t had no pie!”  I said gently, “Mama, I don’t CARE if you have pie, I just need to make sure you have enough insulin in you to cover it”.  Her eyebrows came down, hand on hip, still working that pie in her mouth and spitting crumbs... “I AIN’T HAD NO PIE!!”

okie dokie.  Let’s just have a little check...

Sometimes (so I’ve heard or read) that they’ll do a little test purchase to see if it got picked up on. Not all people read their bank statements every month. Then if they feel that they’ve gone undetected they’ll go for the big purchase.

Edited to add: I spent all morning changing all my auto pay and accounts because my cards were stolen in NOLA. I do feel your pain.

I once had someone use my credit card information at a vending machine across the country for just a couple of dollars worth of junk food. Fortunately, my Discover card immediately recognized it as fishy and flagged it, so I was able to say, yeah, I am at home in Arkansas, not at a motel in Virginia. I found it quite odd, though, since I still had the physical card and wasn't sure how they were using it at the vending machine without the card.

By the way, @Mindthinkr, I asked my stepmom about the recipe. Sadly, she did not have one, though she knew what I was talking about. I did some digging, though, and I think I found the original recipe, which I have posted below. It's apparently a newer cake, which might be why my stepmom didn't have a recipe for it. She hasn't lived there since the 80s, and it seems like the cake is from the early 2000s?

Hey all,

It's been a crazy start of the year, so I haven't been here as much, but I am begging for prayers, energy, warm fuzzies, good intentions, lit candles, Reiki, anything and everything.  My 50 yr old hubby had an issue in the wee hours of Monday morning - we had been packing Sunday for my birthday camping trip to Yosemite.  I took him to the ER.  He was admitted to hospital.  I almost lost him Tuesday afternoon, but he fought back.  Wee hours of Wednesday morning, he crashed hard and was transferred to ICU, along with blood infusions.  He was started on dialysis and diagnosed with sudden onset liver failure and failing kidneys.  Wed. night he looked good and was so much better.  Thursday was a set back and then Thursday afternoon his heart rate went crazy - Tachy - running 174-192 a minute for over an hour.  IV drugs administered to no effect.  They drained his abdomen, which had swollen and that worked.  But the drainage was a greenish brown, so they ordered a contrast CT scan.  Discovered a hole in his bowels that is leaking out into his abdomen.  Emergency surgery is scheduled starting at 6-7 am PST on Friday morning.   I'm still in shock.  We've been married 25 years, together for 28, I'm at a total loss, so anything that anyone can do I would very much appreciate it.

Oh, how horrible for both of you. Sending all the energy I can muster and hoping so hard that surgery is successful and they can get this all turned around!

Please know that you and your husband, along with his doctors and caregivers, are in my prayers.  I hope you have someone around to give you in person support.

@DragonFaerie I’m so sorry to hear your husband. My best thoughts and prayers will be there for you, the medical staff and especially your husband. I know someone who went through something similar a few years ago. It was rough, but he pulled thru. I’m praying for a similar outcome for you.

🙏🏻 Hugs and purrs from the Mindthinkr kitties 🙏🏻

P.S. I agree with @wilsie and hope that you have some support system in place there. We will all be for you here.

I think you can phone in an order to Taco Bell and give the card number then. Our Chinese restaurant takes on line orders, but you have to show the actual card when you pickup the order. Smart.

My debit card was hacked this week for over 1000.,clothes, electronics, movie tix. Wells Fargo is the worst. They have reversed some of the charges but others are still pending. I had the card in my possession and hadn’t used it for over a week. They say they don’t know how someone got it but even if they find out where the stuff was shipped they won’t tell me. I’m curious, the electronics were from Memphis, and I’m in NJ.

Luckily, my card is only linked to checking not savings and at the end of the month there’s not much in it. After their little spree I was left with 10 bucks.

@DragonFaerie, how awful especially when you were getting ready to go on a trip. Sending all kind of prayers & healing thoughts your way. Like I've said before I truly believe prayers & thoughts work.

Regarding the credit cards: My husband's cousin had something scary happen to him about 5 years ago. He was notified by his cc company that someone used his cc# to purchase an airline ticket overseas.  Cousin was advised FBI was involved.  He was upset because it iwould have involved identity theft as well because the bad guy would have had to show up at the airport with fake IDs to be able to use the ticket issued under Cousin's name. Bad enough it was for an airline ticket but for an overseas ticket.  He tried to find out from the FBI what happened but they wouldn't tell him anything.

@DragonFaerie, what an ordeal! You and your husband are in my infidel prayers. Consider yourself supported from afar by all of us here.

Infidel prayers! I am so going to steal that! I always feel really bad not promising "prayers", but I do believe that positive thoughts in general could not hurt, and want a person to feel that they have my support and empathy. It's hard to find the right words.

Granted, Duggars and those of their ilk would probably find infidel prayers to be insulting at best, but we are not them, thank Zeus!

Do you guys have any particular recommendations for facial moisturizer with SPF in it?  People have brought it up with the Duggars, so I wondering about it.

I really like Aveeno facial moisturizing lotion with SPF 15.  But to be honest, I always use the Target Up and Up version, which is several dollars cheaper.  It sits on the shelf right next to Aveeno so is easy to find. It's exactly the same.

I use it daily unless I'm having a big day in the sun.  Then I will use actual SPF 30, Banana Boat Sport.
