Jeopardy! Season 39 (2022-2023)

Lots of ts's last night - I managed to get some of them: Andorra, Kent, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Slaughterhouse 5.

Did not get FJ.  I knew 2012 was too late for A League of Their Own.  I do know that Geena Davis is a skilled archer but I forgot that last night so came up with nothing.

I was rooting for Kyle but it was not to be.

Instaget FJ for me for Wednesday’s game.  I knew the franchise and that Geena is an archer.

Me, too.  I was a bit surprised that none of the contestants got it considering 2012 wasn't that long ago.

I had a pretty good game.  Ran Countries, Andrew Lloyd Webber and British Landmarks.  Got all but one in Natural Order, Around The USA, Car, Numerical Literature, "V"erbs and Famous Siblings.  Would've run Literature and Siblings if I'd been able to drag Jaden's name out of my head (I said "something dumb with a J") and knew anything about Slaughterhouse Five other than the title.  Heck, even the author's name would've given it to me.

I got 10 stumpers: the beach, Andorra, penguins (seriously, flightless birds and no one said penguins?), primate, Camry, Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, Bret Easton Ellis, Sir Walter Scott and Kent.  Should've gotten plexiglass but couldn't dig it out of the recesses of my brain in time.  Same with cetaceans; cephalopods wouldn't get out of the way, damn it.

Oh my god, there were so many stumpers!  18!!!!  Never mind all the clues where at least one contestant answered incorrectly.

It's crazy that the minimum wage in this country was only $1 as recently as the Eisenhower administration.  I don't remember my answer but it was much farther back in history than the 50s.

I remember ha-ha because it comes up in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia.

I've come across the term in various British novels but couldn't remember what it was for the life of me.

The collapse TS made me sad -- everyone needs to know about the bee crisis!

I know about the bee crisis, which is both horrifying and sad, but collapse just wouldn't come to me.  It was one of 4 or 5 clues where I was going "Oh, oh, I know this one, what the hell is it?".

11 hours ago, 30 Helens said:

It doesn’t mean that they don’t know about the crisis, necessarily, but maybe just couldn’t come up with the specific word for the breakdown. That was the case for me.

Same with me.

That is a mind-blowing statistic on the Camry! I still miss the Corolla we had in the 1980s, and also the Tercel we had after that.

My brother had a Corolla which I loved and would've bought off him if I'd had the money at the time.  It was a great car.  The Tercel he replaced it with, less so.  But I knew Camry was the model which followed the Corolla and remember Toyota Jan mentioning it in all those annoying commercials so it had to be the answer.

I heard internet, but will fess up to the occasional hearing problem so I don't doubt you for a minute.

I ignored the part of the clue mentioning a movie franchise, since I don't care about them & know very little. I just knew Ms. Davis is an archer, so I went with archery.

So-so game for me, but FJ was an instaget. I didn't even notice the film part of the clue - I saw Geena Davis, saw women's sport and went directly to archery. When my husband mentioned the Hunger Games, I didn't know what he was talking about.

I thought the Cats clue had to be the name of the song rather than the show, given that they showed a singer dressed as a cat which seems a pretty big gimmee. Fortunately I said Cats before the video showed.  I guess that clue was definitely right for the $100 slot.

At our house we heard "internet." I don't count captioning as accuracy, since they are so often inaccurate (and we don't use them for Jeopardy anyway). But I'm sure everyone heard what they heard and it's Schroedinger's Intranet/Internet.

So I guess that I'm the only person who had no idea Geena Davis is an archer? I have never run across that particular fact, so of course I said baseball. Why else mention Geena Davis's name in a sports clue if it's not about baseball, sez I.

I happened to read the first comment about this game before I watched it, so I was particularly listening to Kyle's pronunciation. He definitely, absolutely said "intranet."

I remember when she was trying to qualify for the Olympics in archery.  She almost made the team.

Listening again via YouTube, I do hear "internet."
Mayim's response of a pause followed by "That's correct. Intranet" seems to indicate that either the judges in her ear or the notes on her card led her to believe Kyle's response was "intranet" not Internet."
I wonder if the show would have been edited to correct the score if it would have made a difference?

Listened to the clip a few times and now I think it could be either internet or intranet. Too bad they didn’t ask Kyle to repeat his response. Still glad my Chicago gal Ilhana won - wonder what part of city she's from.

I lowered the speed to 0.25 and heard "intranet," although even then it wasn't perfectly clear.

I would guess if there was a question they may have stopped the game to review it so the judges would have let her know and she repeated it because they figured some viewers would hear it the other way? (Her pause may easily have nothing to do with whether there was an actual judgment needed or not...)

A tale of 2 halves today - really good J round and really bad DJ round.

Ran "The Operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan" and "Sweet Spots" and got 4 in "Biopics", "3 Things About the City" and "B" Nice". Got both missed clues of H.M.S. Pinafore (DD) and Shanghai. Only positive note in DJ was getting the missed DD of Minuteman - not all that positive since there were 8 TSs/missed DDs. A lot (but not all) of what I missed I had no chance of getting right as I hadn't heard of them. What you don't know you don't know.

Got my 3rd FJ of the week. Knew Pakistan's capital was Islamabad, but couldn't figure out how Pakistan met the clue's criteria since I didn't know that its complete name is The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Since I couldn't think of anything else I stuck with what I thought was my wrong response. Yay!

And as far as I'm concerned macaroons and macarons are not the same thing.  A macaroon is a coconut haystack type cookie and a macaron is a meringue sandwich cookie. YMMV.

Another okay game for me.  I got the ts of Shanghai and the missed DD of Minute Man.

Pretty much an instaget FJ.  I didn't know the full name of the country but I know Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan.  I didn't really consider anything else.

Since I'll be watching Top Chef tonight, I just "played" by checking the archive.  For a couple of clues, I gave myself credit on the assumption being able to see the picture would have led me to the correct response.  With the rest, I either didn't need it or it wouldn't have helped.

I'm bummed Ilhana crapped out in DJ; I was enjoying her and hoping she'd be back tomorrow.

The flounder TS surprised me (that's one where I didn't even need the picture, just a flat fish and "struggle helplessly").  And I can't believe the chairman TS with "man" spotted by the category.  (Chief of the Space Force?!)

I almost ran the entire first round, but I missed cake pops (I don't think being able to see the picture would have helped me; I've never heard of them) and cloche (seeing a picture of the hat definitely wouldn't have helped any; that I've heard of, but had to look up what they look like).

In DJ, I blew the entire book series category; cultural osmosis failed me altogether.  That didn't surprise me, but sucking at a vocabulary category did -- I missed three in words.  If not for those, I'd have had a great round; I only ran potpourri, but got all but one each in the rest.

FJ was an instaget.

Nobody’s mileage should vary on this. They’re spelled differently, are pronounced differently, and are two different kinds of cookies. It’s ridiculous that they let that slide.

I’m less sure about this, but was the book series called “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”? I thought that was just one of the books in the series.

Hey, me, too! (Well, I don't know about "really good" but it wasn't too bad by my standards.)

June 1:

73% / 47% / 60%

Got home just in time for Double Jeopardy (no errands tonight, I was just at work that late) and had to go back and watch the first half on youtube...Didn't do too bad…ran Biopics and "B" Nice, missed one in Gilbert & Sullivan and Sweet Spots, two in Stuff to Wear, and four Cities.

Not good in DJ…missed two in Bio Pics, Potpourri, and Words, three in Books and TV, and four in "Man" o' War.

Well, I had the right religion for FJ, at least. I thought about just turning off my TV and watching the whole game on youtube, but I'm glad I didn't because the video skipped from the category reveal to the answers and completely omitted the actual final clue.

Got the missed clues of minuteman (DD) and handicapping.

I got as far as "The Islamic Republic of ...something" but my brain didn't get around to trying to think of capitals in time (though I'm not sure I would have come up with Islamabad, anyway, even though it seemed pretty obvious in hindsight).

I thought the same thing. Macarons are typically made with almond flour. Though I googled and found 'macarons are a French interpretation of the Italian macaroon' so maybe that's why? Mental Floss says they evolved from the same ancestor (since there was a DNA clue I'll go with an evolution metaphor).

First few years on the Great British Bake Off they all pronounced the 'macaron' type cookie as 'macaroon', they must have got push back because they then started pronouncing it -correctly- as far as I'm concerned, with only a few bakers nowadays using the 'macaroon' pronunciation.

Me, too regarding FJ.  I've never had a macaron, but when I see pics of them, they remind me of Maine's Whoopee Pies.  (The pink ones are macarons, the chocolate ones are Whoopee Pies.)

Prevailing Wind, if I'm not mistaken a Whoopee Pie is more of a cake-y type treat and quite a bit larger than a macaron which has a crunchy meringue shell. And while I think that macarons are nice to look at, especially in a multi color rainbow display, I don't particularly care for them.  I'm just not a meringue kinda gal - give me a lemon cream pie over a lemon meringue pie any day. Or a whoopee pie.

I agree with the totally wrong ruling.  I've always loved macaroons. Tried macarons in Paris (finally had to find out what all the hoopla was about) and wish I'd bought the Napoleons in the bakery instead.  Jeopardy seems strange these days. I'm not sure if I still haven't come down off my Jeopardy Masters Cloud Nine...or something has changed re: choice of contestants. Tonight I was wondering if Ilhana was not feeling well.

Re: the macaron/macaroon controversy, that's what I thought as well, but apparently macaroon is an acceptable name for the macaron. The OED entry for macaron is cross-referenced with macaroon where they provide a definition that makes it plain that macaroon has been used for both:

Screenshot_20230601_224532_Chrome.thumb.jpg.300e9ebe6ee6d32bc77d545e75bb8102.jpg

In fact Jeopardy accepted macaroon in a 1985 episode (Foreign Cuisine, $300).

https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=4233

So I don't think the ruling was wrong, but it either would have been better for the clue to have been written from a different angle or for the host to provide clarification and context to avoid the vexed question.

I don't; I speak English and (somewhat) Spanish (I know some French words and phrases, of course, but not that one).  I was talking about how my two misses in the first round were clues with photos, but not being able to see the pictures wasn't the reason I missed them, as in neither case would the visual have helped.

Same here! Islamabad was all I had, so I had to make it work. Sometimes partial knowledge is all you need.

As for macaroon vs macaron: I don’t care about either one, but the debate made me curious, so I did a little digging. It seems that both words (along with macaroni) derive from the Italian maccarruni. Originally, it referred to two types of sweet, doughy foods, one resembling pasta and another more dessert-like. In the 16th century, the word “macaron” appears as referring to a dessert, but that name is soon anglicized and spelled with an extra “o”. (This is not uncommon with English words that have been borrowed from the French; for example, the French say “ballon” but we say “balloon”.) At the time, recipes with both spellings are interchangeable, and all use an almond paste.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century when a new variation, the Coconut Macaroon, appeared in Jewish cookbooks published in America. It seems that baking with coconut was a bit of a fad at the time, and this version soon became America’s favorite.

Around this same time, the French modified their version by making it into a cookie sandwich. Because only the French were doing it that way, and because they stuck with the almond base, that version became synonymous with the French spelling of “macaron”.

So in short, two flavors, two spellings, same derivation. Depending on where (and when) you are, they can mean the same thing. With a history so intertwined, I think the judges were correct to accept either answer.

If you’d like to take a deeper dive into the history of macaroons (or macarons!), here’s a link with even more details: https://slate.com/human-interest/2011/11/macarons-macaroons-and-macaroni-the-curious-history.html

To me, that one was more of a “I’ve read the name but never heard it said” thing. Like the contestant who answered “Len-a Dunham” instead of “Lean-a Dunham”.

If the contestant had said “Margot Robert” and they accepted it because Robbie is a nickname for Robert, then my gourd would most certainly have been lost. LOL

I did great in the first round, running Biopics, 3 Things, Sweet Spots and Stuff To Wear, and getting all but one clue in Gilbert & Sullivan (Damn you, HMS Pinafore!) and "B" Nice (I did say bequest but only after I said beneficiary first).

DJ went downhill.  I only ran Bio Pics, which is strange because it was a science category and usually I don't do well in those, and getting all but one clue in "Man" O' War.  The contestants all seemed to struggle with understanding that man had to be in the answer for some reason.

I did get 5 stumpers: Shanghai, flounder, Manfred, minuteman and handicapping.  And it took me a moment but I did get Pakistan.  It was sort of a guess because I didn't realize it's official name is longer, but I knew the capital was Islamabad so I went with it.

It wasn't a particularly impressive performance, but I'm fine with Jared winning since it meant it wasn't Eva and her incredibly annoying voice.

I would not have accepted macaroons for macarons.  They are two different things.

That Omar Bradley is quite the talent, isn't he?  I'll confess to not getting chairman because I couldn't make it work in my head, but Space Force has to be one of the worst answers ever on Jeopardy.

Yes, and like Alex, Ken always does it, every time.

While I agree that most of the contestants know they can bet $1,000/$2,000, they're waiting for permission. Without it, they're sort of overstepping a boundary if they make the highest wager allowed. They realize that it makes the host look negligent. It adds to the contestant's pressure and nervousness as @dgpolo mentioned a few posts above.

It's a bad look.

Greetings from Svalbard, where today we saw a walrus and a large pod of Beluga whales!  It was estimated that there were 40-50 whales in the group.  It was awesome.  So, of course, it was an archive game for me, and I did not get FJ in Thursday’s game.

I did, however, get the TS of flounder, Maze Runner, chairman, minuteman, and handicapping.

We’re out of the fjords just now, so there’s internet, but who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Decent game today - J round close but not quite as good as yesterday, but did much better in DJ.

Didn't run any categories in the J round but got 4 in "You Have Selected Regicide" (picked the wrong Louis), "Ohio Geography" (didn't put together that they were referring to the Football Hall of Fame which I know is in Canton), "Their Middle Initial" and "Sports Stars Calling It Quits".

Got 5 of the 6 TSs/missed DDs  including all 4 in "Ohio Geography" - Lake Erie (TS really?), Columbus, Akron (DD - tires + Ohio = Akron) and Wright-Patterson - along with colonel. Helped that I've been to the Air Force Museum at Wrighr-Patterson a number of times. A really good museum even if you aren't the biggest aviation/military aficionado - it has the plane that was Air Force One on which LBJ was sworn in as president after JFK's assassination and which carried Kennedy's body back to D.C from Dallas. It's cool to be able to set foot on this piece of history.

O.k. DJ round - no TSs but got 4 in "Inventors and Inventions" and didn't have any truly sucky categories.

So close on FJ. Like Jong I said Nixon Pardoned instead of Nixon Resigns. "Urges a time of healing" made me think of Ford so I thought pardon instead of resignation. Oh well - still got 3 FJs right this week - the 3rd week in a row I've been 3 for 5.

Canada week on Jeopardy. First we had Diandra from Montreal, then Kyle from Edmonton and today Sylvia from Toronto.

Not on at regular time in NYC because of President's speech.

Does anyone know what time they will show?  It's usually at 2:00 or 3:00.

Damn!  They just cut in, part way through.

I hate when that happens  especially since in Chicago local news follows Jeopardy and the "breaking news" usually (but not always) can wait. And if they show part of the game they don't usually show it in its entirety in the wee hours.

June 2:

60% / 60% / 59%

President Biden talked over the beginning of the show. Wondered if they would push it back or just join in progress, waited a few minutes, then went to youtube. The first video I tried had the sound go out several clues in, and according to the comments it didn't come back. So I tried another one and went straight to the comments to find one saying part of it repeated and half the game was missing. My third try a comment said the whole game was there, but it actually skipped about four clues in the first round (I just got them from the archive). It was fine after that. I know people do weird things to try to avoid copyright issues but sometimes it's just ridiculous. Why bother if you're going to cut out half the game (though I suppose some of them are just incompetent)? I did check on my TV again later but they were almost done with DJ so clearly they joined in progress.

Anyway...I ran Middle Initials (that seemed like a ridiculously easy category but I kinda appreciated it after the week I've had), missed one in Garden Party, two in Sports Stars and Internal Organs, three in Regicide, and four in Ohio Geography. In DJ I missed one in Inventors and Animal Rock, two Women Authors and States of the Union, and three in It's a Fact and Words Ending in Y.

I didn't get FJ (though I guessed it had something to do with the president). In my defense, I wouldn't be born for another year and almost two months.

TSes were Lake Eerie, England (based on the historical clue; I didn't figure out the body part...but, duh), and Pennsylvania (I went to college not too far from Carlisle,  and a friend of mine used to work at Dickinson College and I stayed with her the night before our 15 year reunion, and another friend's sister has also worked there for many years).
