The cold open and Biden's "pause"...I said out loud "A lot of people are going to hate this part. But...science+karma is pretty much where we are."

They are really dragging out the sketches as much as they can to avoid changing the set often, aren't they?

Cold Open: "Tuesday feels like 100 days ago." Boy ain't that the truth? Jim Carrey killed it only a minute in. It's hard to remember that he's got lots of sketch experience and he's also one of the best SNL hosts of all time.

I don't think any debate sketch could top "Lockbox" vs "Strategery" but this is coming damn close. I was DYING at the laser pointer. "It's a wand that cures the Covid." Yeah, it went on a bit too long and Maya as Kamala fell a bit flat, but this was cathartic. We all need that Click remote, Jim.

Monologue: "My heart goes out to Covid." Chris Rock started strong. It's still weird to see everyone in masks. The band, the audience, even Chris himself was carrying one the whole time.

Oh yeah, the new intro looked nice. And hi, new people! Kenan's bit in the intro was him saying "I ain't ever leaving!"

Name Change Office: Oh, it's one of THESE sketches. I died at "Edith Puthie," and then came "Alma Holtzhert." Good to see Pete again, and he looked like he was having the time of his life. Sure, it was easy jokes, but we needed something dumb right now and I loved it.

Bottom of Your Face: I liked this one. Going from WAP to No Sex in The Champagne Room was a turn I wasn't expecting.

Whoa, half of the band is in the Tonight Show studio. That's pretty cool.

Tony Hawk: Oh, it's a look into the future? Is this kid supposed to be Jared Kushner and Chris Rock is warning him about how he doomed the planet? Nope, it's about advertising the Tony Hawk Pro Skater remakes. And then it was about the mom marrying Kenan Thompson and then it just ended. That was weird.

The Drew Barrymore Show: I know that this show exists, how dead on is this? I miss Abbey Elliot's impression, but Chloe was great. Those SNL At Home episodes were a gold mine for her. So good to see her lead more sketches.

WU: "The problem is that it's almost TOO funny." Well said. 2020 has been too on the nose lately. You watched the cold open, there was no way they could've made it weirder, even with the remote from Click. Colin and Che have been spitting some hard truths and the audience just sounds dead. Of course they'd bring in Chen Bao after the TikTok stuff.

“'Well, let’s cancel the whole season and forget it ever happened,” said the New York Jets.' Shots fired. Colin getting on the board of BET had to been one of Che's jokes.

And maaaan, they saved Kate as RBG right for the end. So much for her showing up as a ghost.

NBA Bubble Draft: This went in a direction I wasn't expecting. Drafting to see which wife/mistress/escort/side piece joins the NBA Bubble. Everyone got a chance to shine. Favorites were Heidi, the one that kept ordering BWW (dream woman material right there), and Kate. Yeah, of course she was looking for the WNBA Bubble Draft. But again, it fell flat with the audience. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. Really, it seems that this would've been right at home in Chris Rock's era back in the 90s.

Epic Virtual Fight: Heh, an SNL at Home sketch with a budget and a studio. I liked Kate and Aidy's parts, of course. I missed them being together.

Well this show certainly earned an A for effort. Was it the material? Or the audience not feeling it? There was certainly something off. There was certainly rust. Next week is Bill Burr and expect his monologue to be just as long, and definitely angrier. Megan Thee Stallion did a pretty good job, I have to say.

The episode over all felt...light? Where there fewer sketches? I can't put my finger on exactly what or why I feel that way.

Lots of prerecorded stuff, which isn't a big surprise. I am glad they're back, and I'm glad they're being cautious. Not a horrid show. Jim Carrey did better then I thought, and after months of just reading about Megan Thee Stallion, I actually enjoyed her performances more than I thought I would. I was glad to see all the masks going on. Welcome back, SNL!

I did think Jim Carrey was really good as Biden, but the sketch seemed to pause a lot. Maybe the cue cards weren't changing fast enough. I also thought most of the news jokes on Update were great.

There were parts of the show that worked really well and parts that didn't. Lots of commercials and the show ending with the musical guest was a little weird. I did enjoy Megan Thee Stallion. It really seems like they just need time to get back in the rhythm of the show.

I'm really glad the show is back and hope things smooth out.

Oh, and I loved Kate / RBG. Lovely moment

I'm so glad the show is back, especially live in the studio. That's very important. And everyone seemed like they were chomping at the bit to go....

but I think this can be summed as "ok".

First shows back are a lot like the first day of school or new job, meaning generally hard. Nothing was really bad. Nothing really stood out that much either. It was all ok.

Chris Rock felt like an emcee rather the host through most of it.

I enjoyed Jim Carrey and he's very into it, which we know isn't true most of the time for Alec. I loved that they had Cecily cameo as Kimberly Goilfyle (or however you spell her name) after people were screaming for her to do it. Maybe it was just me, but shoehorning Maya into it was super awkward and forced.

I call those the Mikey Day specials. He co-writes all those sketches.

Che seemed especially on tonight.

There really are a lot of cast members now. The intro took forever.

It makes the actors look sooooooooooo ignorant when they pull down their masks to speak , like Kenan kept doing in that first sketch with the dirty names. Unless it was for people who read lips, you do not have to do that. Plus there's closed captioning. Ugh, it makes me insane!

Aside from the NBA Bubble Draft, I'd say this was a good season premiere. I would have understood if they did more Zoom stuff, but if safety measures are put up and obeyed, then I guess it's okay.

I'm hoping that SNL would stop outsourcing presidential candidate roles. Jim Carrey did some nice work as Biden. Given how fucked up this year has been, no one would have blamed him for going into In Living Color overdrive. Alec Baldwin as You-Know-Who is still servicable, though I'm really hoping we won't have to see him play that role for much longer. And I still think he doesn't come out at then end because he's too busy showering away the ickiness. He's a pro, but . . . well . . . ickiness.

Oh, and when I saw Kimberly Goilfyle at the RNC, I immediately thought of Cecily.

(ETA Tangent: There was a community meeting in Palm Springs a few months back, with citizens speaking out against the masks, and I swear one of them was trying to channel Cecily's "Girl You Wish You Never Met At A Party." Yeah, that's all I got)

Nice to see Kate and Aidy still killing it in the 10-to-1. Nice concept for a sketch. I'm guessing something was cut in order for Megan Thee Stallion to cap the episode.

Cold Opens usually last about five minutes. This one was roughly fifteen, followed by Chris Rock doing another ten.

Joe Biden did not act as bad as Carrey's impression, and, well, I'll just say that Alec didn't do enough.

Kamala was similarly meh.

In short, the opener was more like "Sedated From New York!"

I can't tell if this is a genuine "how dead on is this" question or a "how dead on is this" in the rhetorical "it's pretty dead on" sense but if it's a genuine question, the answer is that it's pretty dead on.

I think Chloe was so much like Drew that it'd be hard for me to tell the difference between the real Drew and Chloe's. The set was pitch perfect too. Did they actually use her set?

Definitely a smaller audience, I think. I also wonder if sometimes they weren't as close as they appear. For instance, I am pretty sure during the commercials, they showed the WU desk and the chairs for Che and Colin were pretty far apart. It didn't really look that way when they actually did WU but I'm wondering if they were doing a Kelly & Ryan-esque split screen which makes them look closer than they are.

I think Jim Carrey is usually really good but I didn't love his Biden. Maybe it's because I'm so used to Jason doing it. I'm also disappointed there wasn't at least one spewing venom joke.

I do give props to Alec for his freeze framing, though.

And the end, masks and fist bumps as they said their goodnights.

I was surprised (and a little put off) that they had a live studio audience. The people were sitting so close to one another, even if the show did have only about a quarter of the stage-level seating that they normally do. But maybe all those first responders in each closely seated pod work at the same location or something. And I know they were all masked, and I’m sure tested. It was just a little weird.

I did not really find the show to be funny. The debate did not put a funny spin on the train wreck (not sure if that was even possible). And honestly, I thought the at-home shows displayed more creative spark than this one. Glad they’re back, but hope they stay safe.

I was a little frightened at the way it was set up. I always wanted to be part of the audience, but now I wouldn't feel safe to be close to whoever was there. Especially the AC and the amount of talking/singing going on, I just pray this is not a superspreader.

She was in the goodnights. Her pieces must have been cut.

I was surprised they had Chloe playing every white female role in that pre-tape. Melissa normally may have had one of those. It must have been for safety reasons.

I have to say, the way the audience was set up did not look that safe to me. I know they had masks on, but...did they really quarantine and test all the audience members for this? They were sitting very close together and there were a lot more of them than I thought there'd be.

I know I wouldn't have felt comfortable in that environment. If everyone's going to be laughing and cheering in an indoor space for 90 minutes I think they ought to at least all have N95 masks on.

I don't know. If this is what they're going to do every week I wouldn't be at all surprised if something bad happens.

I thought I was the only one that didn’t it find the show funny. The debate was nothing spectacular. I actually like woody harrelson’s Biden better.

as someone who watches drew Barrymore’s show- it was spot on. She actually talked about how much she loves SNL on Fridays show. No mention that she would be part of it. But I wonder if they gave her a heads up about the spoof.

They might have had Fewer Sketches Because The Sketches Were SO LONG Especially The Cold Open ! The Cold Open Was TWELVE To FIFTEEN Minutes Long ! ! I Think That Was THE LONGEST Cold Open That They Have Ever Had ! Many Cold Opens Have Been around TWO OR THREE Minutes Long ! ! Some Cold Opens Have Been EIGHT Minutes Long!

I Think They Did The NBA Bubble Draft was because The Corona Virus Messed Up The Sports Schedule So NOW They are Playing Men's Basketball, but they Might be Playing The Women's Basketball Also ! ! I Don't Think you Should Use The word Icky ! Maybe, You Should Use Weird OR Bored Like You Don't Care OR Some Thing ! ! I Thought They Kept Pausing on The Cold Opening because Donald Trump Who was Alec Kept Interrupting!

I'm surprised the debate sketch didn't have a bit about how most of Trump's attendees refused to wear a mask. Because what's the worst that could happen, right?

At least Carrey tried to mimic Biden's voice - Sudeikis just talked really loud and Harrelson didn't bother. It's also a sign of how things have changed over the years.

Thanks, I'll go back and look for that. WU is one of the few segments I watch every week but I missed that.

I didn't either. I think he has the voice down pat but the mannerisms were IMO mostly Jim Carrey doing his known shtick.

I laughed a couple of times, especially during WE. "Boat shoe wearing bitch" killed me for some reason. (And why didn't Bowen Yang get bumped up to regular?)

This is probably going to be the roughest season SNL's ever had, for multiple IRL reasons.

The cold open tended to drag and I think that was what contributed to the problem. They needed to be interrupting/talking over each other more like what happened IRL. That would have sped things up and would have come closer to the craziness that was the real debate.

With that said, the part where Biden silences Trump with a remote was pure gold. That was channeling Adam Sandler's "Click."

This is probably going to be the roughest season SNL's ever had, for multiple IRL reasons.

It would take a lot to be worse than some years (for me the early '00s are about the worst SNL has ever gone), but beyond the poor political material, they desperately need to work on execution of ideas - this is not a pandemic problem either. Incoherent sketches need to be shaped up, unless they are well-crafted oddball pieces, which most of them are not.

With a few exceptions, SNL has kept new cast members under FP status for two seasons for the last 20 years.

It bothered me too, but I have to assume they did it for television audio purposes. I don't think it makes them look ignorant though, because clearly they were not required to be masked in all scenes. There were several where they weren't wearing them at all. It was weird. They were encouraging people to wear masks at the end, which seems the right thing to do, but every single scene that involved a mask illustrated improper mask wearing. Every sketch whoever was about to talk either took it off first or pulled it down. If they'd done some sort of disclaimer, like....we're on television and we're bubbled and IRL you should keep your mask on here but so you can see and hear the actor best, they're taking it off, but please pretend they didn't. Or SOMETHING.

Well, that was pretty meh after a summer of anticipation. The cold open was less funny than the actual debate, Jim Carrey is not as good a Biden as Woody Harrelson, and they didn't need to rush out Kamala yet. Chris Rock's monologue was funny, as was Weekend Update and a few of the skits, but a lot of them were duds. And clearly I'm not the target audience for Megan Thee Stallion, 'cause I thought she was bad. Although she did work in the couple of sketches she was in.

Yeah, that was my impression, too. They made Biden look crazy when he wasn't, and they seriously underplayed the Trump lunacy.

Which is exactly why it didn't work for me. It's not even parody Biden. He did get the voice right, though.
