Ed and Rosemarie: The Long and the Short of It

Ed, 54 (San Diego) and Rosemarie, 23 (Philippines)

Ed hasn’t been in a relationship in the last 28 years and is ready to love again. However, his 31 year age gap with Rosemarie and the disapproval of Ed’s only daughter may threaten their happily ever after.

I think so!

found this:

"Ed is a 54-year-old who has been single for 28 years. He also met his significant other, Rosemarie, through social media. Ed is under five feet but has yet to disclose that information to Rosemarie when the series first starts."

There is nothing horribly wrong with this guy other than he doesn't want a woman his physical or age equal.  Does he really think at 23 year old Filipina loves him?  If he lowered his physical standards he would have no problem finding a wonderful local woman.  This is the case for the majority of the men on this show.

Well she would physically be his equal.

He looks like he was last married to a tall and rather slender woman, who was likely out of his league.  He had the fall to cheat on her.  So, maybe he is a likeable guy.  But he may also have an overinflated sense of self.

That sucks. He owes it to this woman to be honest; his short stature could be a deal breaker!  I'm sorry if it seems shallow but the one thing I found most men exaggerate online is their height.  Being a semi-little person is significant.

Big Ed and I are the same height and as hypocritical as it will sound, it would probably be a dealbreaker for me. 4'11" isn't just short-it's tiny. I don't have preferences when it comes to age, skin color, hair color, facial hair, nationality, or vocation but height really does affect my ability to be physically attracted to someone. I think it may actually be a biological thing for me-seeking out men who are at least 5 inches taller than me because I am so short.

I also hate it when women lie about age and pretend to be younger. Aside from being dishonest, advanced age could limit child bearing abilities (if that's important to them) amongst other things. I know men and women who don't want to date more than 10 years older because they're literally worried about their partner dying sooner and they are afraid of being left alone. Regardless of their reasons, it's super shady to lie like that. I'd be more upset by the lying than the truth.

LOL, I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

It would be so hard to meet him in real life because I'd feel like such a jerk, but I wouldn't be able to not state at his neck.

Every time I see him on screen I think if those  cartoons when someone gets hit on the head and their neck disappears and they are a head perched on shoulders. Then another character pulls their head back into position.

In one of these articles, or on Reddit, people were getting slammed for "making fun of poor Ed and his health issues" (ie, his neck). That he was being "body shamed" and how that was so sad since "he's a really good guy."

Have they seen this show? Or most any reality show in the past 18 years? A lot of us watch just so we CAN make fun of the participants. Get with the program, people.

As far as him being a "really nice guy", I prefer to withhold my judgment on that one until we're knee deep in the season. Statistically, though, when it comes to people on this show he has a much better chance of turning out to be a real asshat.

My question is, we see a snippet of him standing in front of Rosemarie and says, "what do you think" of something like that like it is the first time she had seen him, they have been skyping and sending photos all along...wouldn't she have already seen what he looked like?  Or is there some neck filter we don't know about?

I think it may come as a surprise that he's not even 5 feet tall.  She probably already knows about the neck.

Couldn't agree more, the lying is the worst.  This man has built up this whole relationship on a foundation of lies.

I don't know, it's just like people who eat three desserts but get a diet Coke. Like if you're already having those calories go all in and have a regular soda.

If a guy has no neck and looks like big ed, just go all in and don't worry about the fact that he is short......I mean he is like thirty years older and doesn't have a neck if she can let that go, surely she can accept the height because looks really can't be important to her at all. Or at least that what I'd think.

This and this.  I don't get how he had the balls to cheat on first wife then just go without a relationship (according to him) for like what 20 years or something like that?! And now expect to catch a young pretty 20 year old gal.  He's really batting out of his league and like the people on previous seasons it looks like they like the power trip of the fact they can get the foreigner the green card which makes the American feel they are owed a beautiful companion.

One thing that bothers me about Ed isn't the height it's the fact he looks greasy. His hair looks like it hasn't been washed and the straggly beard. If he cut the hair short, washed it well, shaved and put on some aftershave, he would be more appealing.

And his career is taking pictures of beautiful and probably scantily clad young women in sexy poses. I saw a bit of Ron Jeremy, the porn star crossed with Geraldo Rivera at his sleaziest, when he was photographing that one “model”  and ogling what he described to her as “the money shot”.

Ed has a Master's Degree in Architecture and his big boy job is in interior architecture for commercial buildings. The photography is for the show.

Ed responded to a fan and confirmed that he suffers from a congenital condition known as Klippel Feil Syndrome also known as cervical vertebral fusion syndrome, a rare congenital condition characterized by the abnormal fusion of any two of the seven bones in the neck. It results in a limited ability to move the neck and shortness of the neck, resulting in the appearance of a low hairline

Low hairline?  Maybe the one in the back?

So what are the rules in this situation?  Can we make fun of him or not?  Everything but his height and lack of neck, or anything else that he can't help?  I don't think Darcey can help being the way she is, and I'd be really disappointed if she were off limits.  Actually, one of the hilarious things I find about her is that she's so short and thick--like Ed.

Since when has anyone here not snarked on people’s appearances here? This is a guy who cheated on his wife, and is now lying to his Filipina ‘girlfriend’. He seems to feel entitled to basically buy a young, empoverished girl from a developing country and bring her home as his prize, ‘Hey, look at me, I can get a hot chick!’ He’s above getting a nice local girl so yeah, He’s put his situation on display, snark away on anything I say.

I can't remember Darcey being picked on for being short as much as people comment on her refusal to wear clothes that fit and flatter her figure. She cannot help her height but she does the rest of that crap to herself, intentionally. I wonder if she had a breakdown on IG after seeing herself on TV again? She's nuts.

The no neck jokes look like they will fade out soon since he is more than willing to give us other things to snark on, but he went on the show and knew the comments would be coming.

It's not like anyone here is attacking him on his own accounts; we're doing it on a forum for snark.

Ed reminds me of Danny Devito who is 4 feet, 10 inches tall. Danny D has a medical condition called Fairbank's disease, also called multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED), which is a genetic bone growth disorder.  Apparently being under 4'10" is considered dwarfism.  He seems like a caring guy with issues, I hope he does OK.

Yes. I get gross vibes from this guy.

He’s no different from any other 90 Day-er in that he whines about loneliness but has probably overlooked age-appropriate local women and instead goes for the very young foreign hot chick online.  And withholds info. from the hot chick to boot (doesn’t want kids).

A very smart poster noted in a couple’s thread from last season that if you show one of these 90 Day men a photo of an average/normal looking woman in their area near their age who wants to be in a relationship with them and establish a home with them, and grow old with them, the guys’ reaction would be “mehhh”. Because what many of them want and expect is a hot young thing who could be a porn star and cook like The Iron Chef. (And some 90 Day women are no better with the young bucks they chase.)

Such a good point!  And yeah, I am guessing that these these 90 Day Guys do 1 of 2 things all day, every day  -- cruise web sites looking for hot, young foreign chicks and watch porn.  A lot of porn.  Which of course warps their little brains and giant egos.

I want to like Ed but he is so vain. Vain and manipulative. Dying your hair black even though you have skin issues, giving yourself the nickname "Big Ed" (even if it is "ironic and funny" spoiler alert, it isn't). It's vain and icky. He knows his daughter is pissed at him so he calls her and leaves her a message and says, "leaving soon... just wanted to say I love you... if the plane goes down... it would be nice for you to call back." What a dick. What is a "sweet" (as he called her in a previous clip) daughter supposed to do? What if the plane did go down? Ugh!

I don't see him as batting out of his league. In the Philippines, no decent man would be interested in Rosemarie. She's impoverished, likely undereducated, she looks malnourished, she's not all that pretty, and she's got a kid.

This is terrible, but about 20 years ago my dad knew a guy who married a woman from the Philippines. He basically went through a wife-finding agency. (Take into consideration that my dad and this entire situation are in an area that most of the country would consider to be Redneck Heaven.) Anyway, his friend spent thousands of dollars to be "matched" to this woman and to then fly down there to meet her, apply for the visa, and fly her back. As Dad was telling me this story he said, "And a year later she ran off from him so he went back down there and got him another one! He's trying to get me to get one, too." To this day I can't be sure that he said "got" and not "bought", but either way that story has stuck with me. I am sure that there are relationships that are loving and built on respect, but I can't help but hear those words in my dad's asshole-of-a-friend's voice. And it makes me really sad.

I am usually 100% on the side of the women in these situations. I am rooting for the NIkki's, the Hazels, the Jennys, the Rosemaries...

I’m trying to understand what your post is inferring... Are you saying that impoverished people - who have little to no access to education, health services or food security - are not entitled to love and/or should not get married, or that they are somehow unworthy of finding a life partner? Because that’s what it sounds like.

It is more like if you think the ugly American is bad then the ugly Filipino without the American's money is worse. When she had her baby the good local guy would normally disqualify her on the spot and only a guy with his own flaws would step forward.

I might think that was a more that was then and attitudes are changing just as they have in America. Or "that is there" in a small village out in the province as opposed to a city girl. But many still go with that gut belief, after all if good local guys where going towards Rose why would she be online seeking?.
