In next week's previews on the video call, Tom looked totally different! I tried to take a screen shot of his face but it came out blurry, but I got the impression his head shots are also heavily filtered.

Okay, just for fun I took a selfie through snapchat and used a filter - it creeped me the hell out!!  It made my eyes large and my pupils looked like quarters!!  Honestly, I am not a good "Snapper" and prefer, oh I don't know.....talking?  (I have snapchatted maybe 10 times in my entire life, lol.)

My thoughts on Avery (and I could be waaaay off base) are that I think she might be a victim of childhood sexual abuse.

I think Avery is the victim of an ignorant mother.  When she made that comment about not wanting to learn ANY Arabic words because, "I'm American, I speak English" or something like that, I just shook my head, another ugly, ignorant American.  Hey, I'm American too and I can learn another language, who would have thought it.

I Avery for example is under no obligation to cover her hair inside the house. Even in many strict Muslim countries, this is not required.

Of course it's not required. However she's being filmed, so she's covering her hair.

I agree. I don't think she has any clue of what she's really planning to do.  Recommendations, even for American visitors in Syria is to get to safety immediately, by going to an adjacent country, as there is not even an American Embassy there any longer.

Quote

No part of Syria is safe from violence. Kidnappings, the use of chemical warfare, shelling, and aerial bombardment pose significant risk of death or serious injury. The destruction of infrastructure, housing, medical facilities, schools, and power and water utilities has also increased hardships inside the country.

The U.S. Embassy in Damascus suspended its operations in February 2012. The Czech Republic serves as the protecting power for the United States in Syria. The range of consular services that the Czech Republic provides to U.S. citizens is extremely limited, and the U.S. government is unable to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Syria. U.S. citizens in Syria who seek consular services should try to quickly and safely leave the country and contact a U.S. embassy or consulate in a neighboring country, if possible.

What gets me is when they talk she sounds so deflated - if the person is real and not a computer.  I still get happy when I talk to my hubby on the phone.  She sounds so flat and mumbly.  Like she is bored.  Which she probably is, I know!!!

To me she sounds almost constantly annoyed and in a rush to get him off the phone.  With a few "babys" thrown in for a good measure.

So the Filter Queen has the nerve to be a Private Investigator. That is laughable at best. The Zied shrine was way more than I could handle.

Avery is just a teenager who doesn't know what she's getting herself into. I agree that she's being rebellious. Every other word from her family is Murica. I'm sure for them American = White. I'm hoping she never makes it to Syria. She probably can't get whatever lipstick she's wearing over there. That alone should give her pause.

The guy "dating" the Colombian girl seems like a jerk but the girl *might* be semi genuine. Looks like we have another dual-purpose ring debacle up ahead.

What can I say about the nail tech and his emotionless Ukrainian? I think you guys have it covered but I do see the pain in his eyes, he's not right.

The idea behind wearing a head covering or hijab is so when a Muslim woman goes outside, she becomes undesirable to other men.

My husband's cousin converted to Islam, we've spent some time around them and their friends.  What they told us was that they had to cover their heads even at home if a male who wasn't immediate family was there.  I do think that there are different interpretations that people follow.

I couldn't pull up the post you responded to, but hijab doesn't make a woman undesirable. It concerns appropriate dressing when interacting with men outside of ones immediate family.

Her friends were all ex gymnasts (it seemed) and they were all much heavier than gymnasts you see in competition.

Avery also has some weird thing going on with her boob. It looked like her bra was stuffed with paper. Especially noticeable in that red turtleneck.

Former adventure travel writer here. As a 4'11" 90lb blonde, I traveled, alone, to many dangerous countries, including Bosnia while they were still at war and most of the tourist infrastructure was in rubble. Even I draw a line at Syria. People are literally trying to leave. It's dangerous for the people who live there, much less foreigners.

Happens often that migrants/expats have to adjust their expectations and may need to change careers when moving abroad. How many times have we heard of Sikh doctors or engineers or IT specialists ending up driving taxi cabs or trucks once they reach the US? In the same vein, many Americans and other westerners who may be qualified as engineers, doctors and other professionals end up becoming English teachers in Asia, jobs they are overqualified for. This is especially true for younger people due to lack of experience. Therefore I think that Omar's young age and his lack of experience are rather going to be liabilities as opposed to opening the way for a career in his field in the US. Chances are, he won't make it. And that's understandable. US citizens should have priority in getting jobs.

My husband has 2 MAs from the University of Wales and a PhD from Oxford, but he is limited to what he can do here because a lot of jobs want people with degrees from "accredited US schools." He finally found a university who cut him a break, but he can't even sub here (even though you only have to have 20 college credit hours to sub). Finding work has been hard and he's from England.

Almost all gymnasts gain weight when they are out of the sport. They are no longer on strict diets with ridiculous amounts of exercise. She had to be smaller to compete. The smaller your body the better able you are to fly through the air. I think Avery is just looking for a place to belong after leaving gymnastics. It may have been her entire identity and now she is seeking a new one. I do wonder what she expects life to be like in Syria.

I have decided to believe that Caesar has a lower than average IQ which would explain his being unable to realize he is being scammed. What I don’t get is that if he truly believes she loves him, and believes everything she says, he should have been more worried about her safety due to the uprising than worried about figuring out a way to get her to Mexico so she could wear the chocolate things.

He’s desperate to get in her pants at this point, but is trying to act as if he’s better than that. She’s got him so hot that he can’t or won’t admit that he’s getting taken. Deep inside he knows, if he didn’t,  he wouldn’t have been so fast to buy a cz ring and figure he can fake her out with it. If he really thought she loved him he would buy a cheap but real ring and if she really loved him, she would be thrilled to receive it.

The only reason why they may "have to" change their career is because in order to practice (medically) in certain countries you need to have passed their specific educational requirements.

I also wouldn't say that American's and other westerners are "overqualified" to teach English.  Do these doctors have the ability to practice in sometimes very difficult situations without the tools they are taught to use back home? No, so they are under qualified to be doctors in other countries just based on that. This is one reason why (especially in the UK) medical students like to do their electives abroad to get further experience.

Quite a ridiculous statement to claim he "won't make it" as if you know him. The fact that he is young and can enroll back in school with no real adult/children responsibilities is an even better reason why he wold make it.

US citizens should have a priority in getting jobs...sounds about MAGA to me. Him going back to school and getting a job n his field shouldn't be affecting your precious American system. Theres no shortage for people in his field.

I agree. Angela I mean she's just trash. Michael seems nice and innocent enough but come on, what does he see in a fat, loud, obnoxious and extremely high maintenance woman who is 22 years his senior? Unless he has mommy issues and doesn't care to have any children all I can think of is either fame or a US green card. Also, if you look at one of the images they are constantly showing of him he appears to be Muslim (based on the clothes he was shown wearing), which is not something I think Angela could get used to. Her nature and independent spirit is worlds apart from the type of "obedient wife" that many Muslim men expect. Although Michael does seem very easygoing so I dunno.

Zied. That dude is creepy. He seems ok looking at first but in the previews we don't see a good side of him. Also, that private investigator should have learned her mistakes from what went wrong with her previous Moroccan boyfriend. Furthermore, she's 21 years older than him. It's just weird. What's with this show casting all these "old bags" (no offence intended) going out with guys half their age and from wildly different cultures (mostly Muslim) where such differences are largely taboo?

Avery. Very determined young woman. A little scary if you ask me. She's just so naive. Good luck to her that everything goes well but she definitely hasn't thought this through. In some ways she's actually very mature for her age in others she has no idea what she's getting herself into. She's like the polar opposite of Nicole from Florida but just as naive, just in a different way. Good thing she doesn't have a kid and unlike Nicole she isn't ignorant about foreign cultures having chosen to become Muslim, which is not something Nicole could realistically do.

I still think that Nicole and Azan from previous seasons is the best example of a bunch of losers that the show has ever cast. David (Annie's husband) doesn't even come close. Perhaps Paul and Karini are the next runners up but despite him being a complete creep, I still prefer him over Nicole mainly because Nicole is just too stupid, immature and lazy. Whereas Paul is simply unlikeable and annoying but at least he isn't completely naive.

I cant help but cringe at a lot of your statements that you're making and conclusions you're jumping to about different religions and cultures. Almost coming across as arrogance with ignorance.

The clothes Michael wears are typical clothing men wear in Nigeria. It has nothing to do with being a Muslim...how on earth did you jump to that conclusion?

Exactly. She's trying on a costume. My impression is that she is continuing to seek the attention she craves. At one time it was by being the "all-American girl," the stellar gymnast, the twice-elected Homecoming Queen.  As those "accomplishments" (and their significance) fade, the more desperate her bids for attention become. What better way than to pronounce love for a guy you've never met in person in a war-torn country, and further shocking your parents by converting to a religion that is the antithesis of theirs.

Islam is not the antithesis of Christianity. Islam, Christianity,  and Judaism have a lot in common. From liberal beliefs to the more conservative ones.

I hope Avery enjoys the head-to-toe burqa in the Syrian climate! Just because dream boy dresses in western fashion doesn’t mean he or his family want the subservient wife dressing that way. And is his family on board with the American plan? If they’re strict enough to believe dating is a no no, i doubt they want a “corrupt” American girl in the family. Why is her mother giving a virtual nod to the relationship by offering to go with Avery? She should tell her daughter, “No fucking way! You’re on your own. Don’t call me to fly you home when all the dire warnings turn out to be a reality.”

eta: I don’t believe she had already converted before she met him

You are making all negative assumptions about him. If he wanted a conservative and subservient wife I am sure he could have found a Syrian family already in America with a daughter to marry. He said he liked that Avery had converted, because it was more genuine since she chose to be a Muslim out of the way the religion spoke to her rather than faith of a girl who was raised in it, because it's part of her culture. Obviously, he knows she used to live a different lifestyle and if he was Mr. ISIS I doubt he would want her for a wife.

I find myself wondering if they could live in relative safety someplace like Jordan, until (if?) he gets a visa to the U.S. From everything I've read it's a fairly modern country, and the Dowager Queen was born American.

Yes I am making negative assumptions. Too bad her mother didn’t. I’ll agree he is probably not a member of ISIS. What I’m concerned about is the stupidity of an American girl and her mother to travel to Lebanon, where there is a recent travel advisory, to meet a guy she knows next to nothing about. Omar could be the greatest guy in the world but Lebanon and Syria are no place for Americans, especially women, these days. The culture is not woman-friendly.

American culture isn't woman friendly either. I don't know if America is really that much safer. With all the terrorists we have here shooting up schools and festivals Avery will probably feel right at home in Syria. My issue is that people seem especially critical of the men who are Muslim as opposed to the other men. The assumption made is that these men are inherently harmful.
