Post-Election Fears & Anxieties

Recommended Posts

Had Bernie been the nominee, we might be in the same level of shit. If he beats his opponent, the people that wouldn't take kindly to "his kind" occupying the White House would run riot. If he loses, those same people celebrate, and probably more wildly than what's going on now. I realize that more Hillary supporters would have accepted the loss (again) and fought against the greater menace, but the same rotten element would have answered in droves.

In a perfect world, You-Know-Who would be the Republicans' responsibility alone. They would have to care for him like parents would entrust a puppy to their child. Sadly, we're stuck with him. And I know it's childish for me not to type those five letters . . . but considering how his campaign was run, I say that I'm very much entitled.

Just caught the finale for Last Week Tonight. John Oliver was in fine form going over how abnormal the latest situation is. The next season is scheduled for February. I know it's silly, but I'm hoping he doesn't get tied up and sent back to England. As it stands, we've gotten the better end of the deal. And, once again, I fear for Samantha Bee (Canada) and Trevor Noah (South Africa).

It looks like the Pence one might not be true. See here: http://www.snopes.com/mike-pence-allowing-rape-victims-to-have-abortions-will-lead-to-women-trying-to-get-raped/

But what does it say about him that it sounds so real that I believed he might have actually said it?

Wow. A woman's email to an elector in Texas and his asshole response: https://twitter.com/hannahmosk/status/797993743567581186

I'm not sure what he thinks she can be sued for. Sending an email? He's a doctor of education, and these are the types of emails he sends? Sigh. I don't want to think about how he might be treating some of his students in Texas if he signs his emails, "Deplorably yours."

My husband is exactly like your friends, he has always kept a good amount of cash at home in the case of a bank failure. Of course when the banks failed at the start of the great depression there weren't stop-gaps and safety nets in place as they are today. It won't hurt to be cautiously prepared for anything.

This is actually an area in which I have a good bit of expertise and can offer some reassurance. I am a tech writer for a very, very large bank. All extremely large U.S. banks are required to submit a plan to the federal regulators each year to estimate how much capital they would need to have on hand for three scenarios: if the economy stays as is, if the economy takes a serious downturn, and if the economy goes completely to hell in addition to having major natural disasters, etc. I work with the team who calculates potential operational risk losses, meaning I work with a bunch of people with doctorates in math and statistics, and they build a financial model every year to project losses under those three scenarios. I work with them to write the documentation (generally 400-500 pages) for our piece of the disaster pie. Other parts of the bank do the same thing for other types of risk, such as losses from bad loans, etc. We submit the documentation to our internal validators, and then it goes to the feds. A few months later, then regulators from the Federal Reserve Board and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency meet with us to ask questions about our plan, and ultimately issue a formal report deciding if they are okay with our plan and our projected amount of capital reserves. I cannot reveal actual numbers, but in terms of the amount of capital we are required to have on hand in case all hell breaks loose, the amount can best be described by the highly technical term "fuck-ton of cash."  That said, of course Trump may be willing to gut Dodd-Frank, but my sense is that even without the regulations, most banks that survived the 2008 recession have learned the wisdom of keeping sufficient capital on hand for a massive economic downturn.

Sam Bee and her hubby Jason Jones became American citizens recently and voted for the first time this election so they are safe and super pissed at the results of course.

Thanks so much for this!  The people I know who actually work in finance do not stockpile cash at home -- so that is also reassuring.  I wrote the original post about this above, and said I had laughed for years at my professionally employed friends (professors, lawyers) who have been keeping cash at home for years.  I said this is the first time I thought of doing that on a smaller scale.  (and just realized they must trust me to tell me what they have squirrelled away at home!)

Exactly.  Bernie would have been been the first Jewish President (for the many that might have missed this- Bernie himself certainly did not hammer away at this fact) and it would have been interesting to see how it would have played out.  I do believe he would have done better in the swing states but the truth is that I don't know that anti-Semitism wouldn't have won out over the populism.

Anti-semitism is just as strong as sexism and racism in this country, I think. The main difference is that some Jews really look or sound Jewish, and some don't. Ergo the amount of discrimination differs.

Trump seems to claim he likes Jews. He acts like the fact that Ivanka married one means he's totally copacetic with them. But I think Ivanka didn't give him a choice. And I think Donald's attitude in general is more to treat the Jews he works with like Pets. They're HIS Jews, so he's okay with them. The ones who don't work for him? They're the ones who'd better watch out.

Re: Bernie. Trump had already set him up nicely (well, Trump-style meaning "effectively") as "Crazy Bernie" and "that communist, Bernie".  It would have been effortless for him to show the tape of Bernie--white haired, wild-eyed and Jewish yelling to his crowds, "We're starting a Revolution!!!! It's a social and political Revolution!!!!"

I don't think Bernie--who Trump would have made into the Second Coming of Karl Marx--would have even won the popular vote. Trump is nothing if not clever at manipulating the public.

Maybe there's some anxiety relief in that the campaign is over. I just ordered Bernie's new book Our Revolution  I'm especially looking forward to what he says about the media which I gather is pretty negative (deservedly so). Will it calm me? Give me hope? Maybe. Hope so!

There's this sketch now with Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle where all these white Hillary supporters are just shocked, shocked I tell you that America is racist. And Rock and Chapelle are like, "Yeah. Where you been?" And I've seen reactions like that from minorities throughout, I mean the lack of shock. I think in some ways this was a band aid ripped off where many white people in the US have for the first time been confronted with the ugliness that's always been woven into the fabric of the society.

I've been banging on about how horrible the Bush administration was on all the same things the Trump administration will be horrible on as well, and I truly believe that. Bush/Cheney was a nightmare, they just didn't need to make all the racist, misogynist and homophobic things they pushed through quite so obvious because a lot of it went totally unchallenged at the time. The status quo was worse, so they didn't need to push back against it so much. This becomes even truer for the Reagan or Nixon administrations, ugliness was much more widely accepted, so it didn't need to be touted and defended quite so openly.

Now there's been progress made in laws and in social attitudes in general, so what they're spouting isn't accepted as a consensus anymore even amongst privileged white people.

I get that. I know that we've had a lot of racist and sexist presidents before. But the thing to me that is also really, REALLY scary about this particular guy is his complete unfitness for office. I mean, he has to be the most unfit person to ever be president, right? Certainly since we've become a superpower after WWII, with an enormous military and nuclear weapons and everything. That to me, is truly unsettling. To have the host of Celebrity Apprentice as commander-in-chief? A guy who's completely ignorant, mentally unstable, and has some kind of narcissistic personality disorder in charge of the safety of the nation? With zero government or military experience and this being his first real job???

I'm not sure why that alone doesn't scare more people. Who's going to be making these foreign policy decisions anyway? It's certainly not going to be him, he can't even pay attention to briefings. I feel like we're genuinely at risk with him in that seat.

Bernie also would have been the first atheist President and you just know that was never going to happen in the United States.

I understand that people feeling upset about Hillary's loss are grasping at any straws they can but I'm getting tired of so many stories and media coverage (not necessarily on this forum although there is certainly a healthy share of it here) about how Bernie would have been a better candidate and that he and his cronies should take over the DNC and do it right (he's not even a Democrat for god's sake!!). Jewish, atheist, old (75), socialist, no real record of note of getting things done in congress or the senate, and most important of all, not vetted. The Republicans never even began to try to tar and feather him because they wanted to run against him rather than Hillary whom they all acknowledged was the most experienced and competent person to ever run for the presidency.

The candidates and several referendums that Bernie was backing in the election all were defeated. He couldn't even get a good Democratic candidate elected as governor in Vermont. Bernie was NOT going to win the election. No way in hell.

I did my nails. It's a thing for me. If I'm solid then I make time for myself to do my nails.

Yesterday was also the second day I went out. The world is chugging along as usual though the little whispered conversations about Trump here and there show that even in NY (aside from the protesters) people are still concerned and not about to go back to business as usual and ignoring politics. But we've got some to go before the inauguration so it makes sense to not be on high alert/panic mode all the time until then. Personally, I'm feeling better. It's still tough on to walk on the ankle but it's been good to get out of the house.

Oh, and she voted for Drumpf.

Silver Spring, Maryland, right?

I live in the Cleveland Park section of D.C. and I reminded my husband the other night of the synagogue sitting on the corner near us and how heavy the police presence is on the High Holy Days.  I am also reminded that synagogues have been defaced in Rockville and Potomac.

As a person who has attended an A.M.E. church all my life, it's devastating on so many levels that we now have to have armed security guards at church in the sanctuary because of what happened at Emmanuel A.M.E. in Charleston.

It is also devastating that there is now a person who is going to be in authority over this country who is such a sociopath and empty vessel that he willingly adopts this white supremacist viewpoint and claims that these heinous acts are the media's fault.  He continually shows that he will never stand up for people like me.  So, fuck him.  #NotMyPresident

Yup.  And I live in Rockville.  It's like these racists were holed up in a bunker or something, just waiting for the call/signal to go full hog. It's not even isolated incidents-it's like the tommy gun effect or something.

My mind can't wrap itself around what's going on.

Hi guys!  I'm in Ellicott City and grew up in PG County, and it is just depressing watching that on the news and especially the response.  As I mentioned, I have gotten 3 emails home from our school district since the election, and of course my school district includes Columbia, MD, which is supposed to be such a beacon of diversity and hope.  It's really sad.

I am going to call our one Republican congressman today along with our Republican governor.  I doubt it will help (especially with the Governor) but I feel that it is the special responsibility of the sane and moderate Republicans to be vigilant and to ensure that Trump and his minions be held in check.  They as a party allowed him to be their candidate, so they need to be held accountable.  Of course it is ALL of our duty, Democrat, Republican or somewhere in between to keep this country's liberty intact and to be vigilant, but I still feel that the Republicans really need to be held accountable.

In Georgia, the pro-Trump interviewees (husband and wife) gave a normal pro-Trump set of reasons of why he and his wife were supporting Trump.  At the very end, when the NPR interviewer was thanking them, they said something about at least they would have their guns if Hillary won -- and NPR said, "what about your guns?"  The wife said, "for the war".  NPR?  "The *war*?"  Wife:  "Yes, the patriot war."  It was astonishing.

Yup. This crap was freely and openly touted on social media - how if Drumpfsters didn't get their way they would resort to armed insurrection in the name of patriotism. They are the same people who are now outraged that protests are happening. I used to think they were being deliberately intellectually dishonest. Now I firmly believe they are flat out stupid.

If that email from the Texan elector is real you can toss him in the same stupid bin. No doubt he thinks " intarnet lawsuites!" are a thing.

At the very least, people should try to remember the last time we had a grossly unfit businessman (who ran every business of his into the ground) in office.  We're still living with it today, including a Middle East that will be destabilized for generations.  Some of our citizens never fully recovered from that disastrous decision.  The only difference between President Bush and Coral Caligula is that the former had governing experience.

I'm not sure if Bush was narcissistic but he was extremely arrogant, didn't like to be criticized and had difficulty processing information.  And, yes, he was deceitful and quite secretive.  But, Drumpf is a special sort of dangerous compared to Bush.  At least Bush had some core beliefs that supporters and opponents alike could easily identify.  Drumpf is nothing but a soulless being who takes on whatever form suits him at any given time.

Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" is my version of "accepting" the sociopathic Nazi in office. It's going down really nicely this morning. The entire album, Pretty Hate Machine, is going down easy, actually.

"Head Like A Hole"

God money I'll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don't want everything he wants it all.

[Bridge:]
no you can't take it
no you can't take it
no you can't take that away from me
no you can't take it
no you can't take it
no you can't take that away from me

head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I'd rather die than give you control.

[Chorus:]
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.

God money's not looking for the cure.
God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.
God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money's not one to choose

[Bridge]

[Chorus]

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

[Chorus]

you know who you are.

I'm not sure how many news articles have been circulating about the University of Michigan, but I have a friend who is a chaplain there and she's been posting local articles for a few weeks now about how ugly the situation with racist rhetoric.  This past week, it's gotten worse.  Today, they spent a long time taking down white supremacy fliers.  I just can't get over it.  I feel like I'm in an alternate universe.

These are lyrics that I've been thinking about a lot this week:

"You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me" by Cher

Feeling broken
Barely holding on
But there's just something so strong
Somewhere inside me
And I am down but I'll get up again
Don't count me out just yet

I've been brought down to my knees
And I've been pushed way past the point of breaking
But I can take it
I'll be back
Back on my feet
This is far from over
You haven't seen the last of me
You haven't seen the last of me

They can say that
I won't stay around
But I'm gonna stand my ground
You're not gonna stop me
You don't know me
You don't know who I am
Don't count me out so fast

I've been brought down to my knees
And I've been pushed way past the point of breaking
But I can take it
I'll be back
Back on my feet
This is far from over
You haven't seen the last of me

There will be no fade out
This is not the end
I'm down now
But I'll be standing tall again
Times are hard but
I was built tough
I'm gonna show you all what I'm made of

I've been brought down to my knees
And I've been pushed way past the point of breaking
But I can take it
I'll be back
Back on my feet
This is far from over
I am far from over
You haven't seen the last of me

No no
I'm not going nowhere
I'm staying right here
Oh no
You won't see me fade out
I'm not taking my bow
Can't stop me
It's not the end
You haven't seen the last of me
Oh no
You haven't seen the last of me
You haven't seen the last of me

GHScorpiosRule, you'll be happy to know that in response to what happened in Silver Spring, students at Montgomery Blair High School walked out of class today to protest Drumpf as well as the church that was vandalized with pro-Drumpf graffiti.  It's being covered by the local news channels as I type this.  It's also trending on Facebook.

I'm reminded of how young people peacefully protested during the Civil Rights Movement.  Even though these students aren't old enough to vote yet, they at least are worried enough about what a Drumpf presidency means for them, their friends, neighbors and families.  Not to mention their communities.  It's hilarious that adults are screaming that they should be in class.  They choose to ignore the civics lesson that is being demonstrated (no pun intended).  The invective being thrown their way, as well as demands to suspend, arrest or punish them in other ways speaks volumes.  Oh, wait...maybe they're paid protesters, too?

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today ordered the New York State Police, SUNY Police and the State Division of Human Rights to conduct a multi-agency investigation into the alleged hate crime that took place at SUNY Geneseo on Friday. The incident was first reported by a residence assistant who discovered graffiti, including a swastika and the word “Trump,” at the university’s Nassau Residence Hall. This marks the second investigation launched into ‎alleged hate crimes in New York in the past few hours.

“To those who think they can intimidate our fellow New Yorkers through racism or anti-Semitism I have one message: Don't count on it," Governor Cuomo said. "It is unacceptable that this is the second investigation that we have had to announce in the last several hours. Any and every reported incident will be investigated and pursued to the fullest extent of the law by the State Police and the Division of Human rights. To any New Yorker who is scared, I want you to know that we have your back, that we will keep you safe, and that protecting your rights is what America stands for."

Full statement.(its from a day or 2 ago)

The President Elect can't bother even writing a 140 character statement to make people feel better. He had to be walked into making a statement on 60 minutes and that was "Stop It".

Somewhere upthread someone referred to Trump as Rump Roast - I am proposing shortening it to Rump. I think that's how I will refer to him.

This makes me very happy. And I'm still stuck at home, sick, thisclose to hacking out one of my lungs from this cough that won't go away; plus I've lost my voice. I need to try and get to the CVS to at least get some soup! I've already gone through one box of TheraFlu.

What is the mood in downtown DC? I spoke with one of my optician people, and he was and sounded very despondent. I'm staying away from FaceBook. I just can't deal with all the posts about how I, other minorities, the LGBTQ community, etc., need to feel sorry for the white upper to middle class men, who supposedly were told to "fuck off" for voting in the Orange Turd, with the 'woe is me, we're in danger too!'

The one good thing I'm looking forward to is going to Girls Night Out with my abso favorite author Nora Roberts this Thursday night. She's a local author. I can't wait to hear what she has to say; she's a die hard liberal, and she don't pull her punches. But more than that, I get to talk with her without having to quickly ask her questions during a book signing, when I have only a minute or so. Yes, I'm a fanguuuuurl after all these years, and I still stutter and stammer when I'm in her presence. Oh if only Roarke* actually existed.

I hope you get better!

In answer to your question, the mood downtown is still a little downcast.  When I got on the subway this morning, the mood was still pretty subdued.  Not even a win by our football team lightened the mood.  There's still a sense of shock.  However, I also detected a grim sense of acceptance and a determination to do something constructive about this.  We all know that he's not a normal candidate and it infuriates us.

The newspapers have gone unread in our home and I recycle them immediately.  I just can't bring myself to read about Drumpf or to see his behavior normalized by people and media figures who know better.  I just can't "make the best of a bad situation" when it comes to Drumpf.  A bad situation in this instance is the worst case scenario.

I had a lovely weekend with my visiting in-laws.  Saturday, we spent the day at the National African American Museum of History and Culture.  It was uplifting, but sad at the same time.  If you haven't gone, I would encourage you to do so.  Just make sure you wear sneakers!  My quads were throbbing and it felt as if I had been training for a marathon.  The lower floor is the most difficult to navigate.  Among the artifacts are slave shackles, bills of sale for slaves, Emmitt Till's casket (no pictures allowed in that particular room), the dress Rose Parks wore when she was arrested, an actual rail car with segregated seating, etc.  However, the mood lightens as you navigate the upper floors.  We ended up doing the lower floor last because the wait for the elevator (which carries 40 people at a time) was one hour!

As I walked to the grocery store, drug store and Firehook Bakery in my neighborhood yesterday, I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness and nearly burst into tears a couple of times.  It's getting better though and I'm at least sleeping through the night without tossing and turning.

I think we should all call our representatives and senators to urge them to speak out against the appointment of a Neo-Nazi in the White House. I've already called mine.

Apparently they do pay attention if they're flooded with calls about an issue. It's better than email. This is something we can do every single time he does something horrific. It ensures a loud, angry opposition.

I wonder if there can be a new thread for action we can take to oppose all the horrible things he's going to do. Just so that someone can list whatever the new offense is every time, and we can all flood Congress with calls accordingly.

"Germany and America are connected by values of democracy, freedom and respect for the law and the dignity of man, independent of origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views," she said. "I offer the next President of the United States close cooperation on the basis of these values."

I posted this in another forum here:  http://www2.nybooks.com/daily/s3/nov/10/trump-election-autocracy-rules-for-survival.html

Quote

Both Clinton’s and Obama’s phrases about the peaceful transfer of power concealed the omission of a call to action. The protesters who took to the streets of New York, Los Angeles, and other American cities on Wednesday night did so not because of Clinton’s speech but in spite of it. One of the falsehoods in the Clinton speech was the implied equivalency between civil resistance and insurgency. This is an autocrat’s favorite con, the explanation for the violent suppression of peaceful protests the world over.

Welp, I just found this thread.  It's likely for the best.  You all didn't really need me in here, having a protracted nervous breakdown.

I've lost 13 pounds and counting in the last four weeks.  I'm not on diet.  I didn't actually need to lose any weight, I just sort of can't eat without my digestive system filing complaints against me for (it seems) extreme abuse.    However, I refuse to let Trump be the actual death of me.  Or at least that is the theory.  So after days of doing things like crying in public, I thought that the time had come to sort of pull myself together and start figuring out what to do.  I volunteer for a non-profit housing provider in SoCal and everyone in the joint spent the back half of last week wandering around, looking like we'd been hit in the stomach with a brick but it isn't like my being teary while stress snacks my actual life away is going to do anything, so I figured it was time.

Saturday we went out to dinner with a friend from South Africa who moved here when she was 15.  I figured she'd have some interesting perspective.  She did.   I probably lost a pound during dinner alone.   So there was that.    Then yesterday I went to the lightly attended VegFest, at a vegan street taco and discussed things like "Hipsters for Sisters" which is apparently a belt bag that is like a forward facing fanny-pack.  The co-founders of the company said "We're on a mission to free women from their baggage" (as they not so discreetly eyed my ginormous purse with disapproval) and that was the best laugh I had all day because apparently they are taking the "It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the dark" approach and more power to them, I suppose.

Then I guess Trump did shit like named an Alt-right, white supremacist (nationalist, what the fuck ever, dude, if they aren't the same thing they are fucking close enough) as his chief strategist.  Well isn't that fucking awesome?  The only thing that makes better is at least the well-intentioned, but far, far too optimistic people who have said things like, "wait and see" "give him a chance" "Oh puleaze....if I had a nickle for every time someone told me the country wasn't going to change if Clinton was elected, but now that it's Trump you're all panicking in the streets...."

At least those people are more likely to stop trying to pretend it is going to be okay.  It's not.  Witness the parade of horror already.

In 2012 I moved to Missouri from Colorado and pretty much from the second I encountered a Todd Akin sign I was trying to figure out how to get our family the fuck out of there.  I'm the one person who will say that 2016, pretty good for me, personally because we moved three times in one year, selling 4 houses, buying 2 (long story) so that we wouldn't have any out-of-state real estate holdings and we hauled ass to southern California in the nick of fucking of time.  I genuinely think I'd likely have been suicidal if I'd had to watch this go down from a living-room in St Louis.

Instead, I'm just stressed and getting skinny while freaking the fuck out which is almost like progress if you are willing to grade on a really dire curve for the definition of progress.   So that's....good...ish?  God, my poor friends in St. Louis.

Poor all of us.  I swear I just want to decide, "Oh fuck it, my mom is from Scotland, I've got the Celt genes that mean I can drink men three times my size under a table....time to just burn off my liver and get the fuck out of this incarnation" but on the off-chance there is still hope for us all, I better stick around so I can at least attempt to help.

But guys, I did not think it was just going to keep getting worse, even before he was inaugurated and it is.  It very much is.

ETA:

Why Trump's victory could be a painful blow to Germany's Merkel

Oh merde.  Just what we need to add to this shit show.  A stressed Germany.

Two things that are bringing me out of this cloud of depression I've been in for a week now: Psych and the wonderful friendship and antics of Shawn and Gus! Roday and Hill are just magic.

"Don't judge me, Shawn. I'm weak."

"Whaaat?"

"Shawn, you know I'm a sympathizing crier?"

"Tap-tap, can't take back. You snooze, you lose Gus."

Me: Shawn and Gus are ❤️❤️❤️❤️
