The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

I think so but I'm not sure.  The total was something like 168 doughnuts and he probably received his share although I suppose they will have to freeze them until he's old enough to eat them.

Izzy will never get to enjoy his donuts. Remember how the kids & Boob acted when Amy brought over donuts to make her birthday cake? She barely had any to make the cake after the animals (aka Duggars) got into them.

They've been on Disney's radar since On the Road with 16 Children, where they got free Disney Hotel rooms, admission to Disneyland and permission to bring a camera crew. Jackson kissed Minnie Mouse, and I think all of his problems stem to that moment he gave away a piece of his heart. Why would Disney honestly think now is the time to partner with the Duggars? The rumor makes no sense.

Okay, good. I thought maybe I was the crazy one, thinking that Disney would run from them like the wind, for multiple reasons. My faith in my sanity, such as it is, is restored.

Thanks to those who corrected me on how many times Jill and Derrick have come home from their mission trip. I thought it was after their second trip home that they took Joy back with them.  Hard to keep track of all their worldly travels!

I'm assuming that the organization sponsoring the mission trip paid for Jill and Derrick's original flight to Central America, so I'm thinking that the donations they were asking fans for was to pay for them to fly back and forth for various events; i.e., weddings, Jill's certification, etc. Since they went to C.A. three months ago, they've been back for a week or so for the Bates wedding and another couple of weeks so far this time. I can see why fans would question where their donations are going.

As for donutgate, I don't care how many dozens Krispy Kreme was willing to give out. Why couldn't the Duggars let five or six of the youngest dress up and go? They would have had more than enough to enjoy, and the family wouldn't have looked like the greedy simpletons they are. I'd be ashamed and embarrassed to be part of that circus.

EPCOT is the most boring park for children. It's only fun when you "drink around the world" and your kids are with grandma. Guess JB wanted to avoid the other parks so the boys wouldn't be defrauded by Ariel's bellybutton.

And what kind of used car shenanigans takes them all the way to Florida for used cars?

The only way Disney would want the Duggars would be if they could cast Jana as Cinderella.

Jana is method like Sean Penn and Daniel Day Lewis. She's been living the role for 20 years now. Edited by CofCinci

Doesn't Anna's family live in Florida?

Yeah. Could definitely mean something. .... Or maybe Boob just wanted to spark a Disney rumor to fuel interest among the UP execs. ... Or, Boob being Boob, he thought he might get in to see old Walt himself and convert him.

I must say I'm seeing more and more a cartoon spinoff with Boob as Homer Simpson on venality pills. Could be called "Sick Simpsons."

And what kind of used car shenanigans takes them all the way to Florida for used cars?

Maybe nobody in Arkansas wants to sell them their cars.

Of course, Orlando probably has upwards of a zillion used hotel vans. Maybe there was a fire sale.

EPCOT is really dated to normal people, but to the Duggars it might impress like it did on opening day in 1982. I hope they went on the Gary Sinise space simulator ride.

Florida probably has a very large market of second hand rental vehicles.

I'm sure the boys really wanted to go to EPCOT.  I'm sure they'd enjoy such stunning attractions as World Showcase .... nah, too many foreigners; Imagination! .... nope, not allowed to have that, also there's a chance they might wander into Captain EO; or The Land ... oh wait, it involves climate change so that's a no; uuuuuhhhh .... Ellen's Energy Adventure?  NIKE NIKE NIKE!

So basically, they went to EPCOT to ride Test Track and Soarin'.

I personally think taking 150 free donuts is tacky as hell but my real problem is the pic of the homeless family ,complete with we are homeless sign.

None of this was classy, from the nutrition-free junk food giveaway to children, to Derick not wearing shoes, to drawing a sharpie beard on a baby, to giving homeless people junk food in lieu of real food.

If anyone needed to eat twelve donuts it's Derick.

Free is free. This isn't outrageous behavior. This wasn't a soup kitchen it was a publicity event for Krispy Kreme, and I don't think the Duggars broke any rules or even bent them. Donuts were exchanged for publicity and hashtags, Krispy Kreme probably did really well in this transaction with the Duggars. A box of donuts would have like a dollar's worth of ingredients at most. 20 dollars of ingredients total got them 40,000 likes on Jill's Instagram. These donuts weren't ever going to anyone needy.

I agree there is nothing wrong with them participating in this giveaway. What I disliked was taking a picture of themselves giving the donuts to a homeless person while making them hold up the sign that said they were homeless. That's just all kinds of tacky. If they wanted to give the donuts to someone in need, which makes sense because 14 dozen donuts is a lot, then just hand the person the box and say 'have a nice day'.

I feel like TLC would make a killing if they waited a few more months for appearance sake and then released the canned season directly to Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc. Jessa's pregnancy announcement, Derick/Jill's decision to go "overseas," Ben's college graduation, the Marsiah courtship that ended in flames...

Confession: I would buy the heck out of that season if it ever saw daylight.

I looked for them on Hulu. Nada. I have never seen an episode. I used to watch the Today Show until I heard, Next! The Duggars....

I had no idea there was a wacky fringe-religion element. My interest was piqued.

This forum is incredibly informative, personal and hilarious.

Thank you.

I kind of hope Marge sings like a canary, or get a huge sum of money from JB to stay mum. She wins either way.

Ugh, more clickbait.  Between Radar, SheKnows, StarPulse, etc. etc. etc. I'm getting tired of all of the baseless speculation; mainly because it's so boring and unimaginative.  I don't see her singing like a canary.  I see her creating a conservative fashion blog that shocks everyone by showing all of her knee.

They've said they're staying in the U.S. for a while, one reason is so Jill could finish her CPM certification

The CPM exam is done online, Jill could've accessed it and completed it in El Salvador.  The notion that she needed to come back to the US to take the exam is simply not true.  Derick implied that that was the reason they returned, but it wasn't necessary.  I've been to El Salvador, they've got the internet there.

True. .... I was thinking more like, Would Disney really want these people -- because their followers maybe would hate Disney? (not to mention  child molestation).... But I suppose that's silly, too!

Disney, love it or hate it, is also well known for having some of the top PR folks in the world.  It's rare for them to make a misstep with the public.  No way are they going to get involved with a bunch of ignorant buffoons like the Duggars who apparently cannot be trusted to follow even the most basic principles of good PR.  It might be that they got a free trip to Disneyland back years ago, but no way is Disney going to even consider allowing their brand to be sullied by the Duggars these days.

Yes & there's rumours flying around regarding Anna visiting her mom. I figured poor Anna can't go all the way to Florida alone....being only a woman & all. She needs her headship to escort her (sarcasm). Jim Bob to the resue?? Maybe Epcot was JB's way of killing some time?

Didn't Anna fly - with her kids but without Josh - to Jill's wedding? Or was it Jessa's? Josh tried to crank up some phony drama about whether or not he'd make it on time for the wedding - probably at some producer's urging. But Anna was not accompanied on the flight by any male family member.

So this article suddenly appeared on my FB feed. I'm not shocked we all knew it was coming, a special on Binessa and Jerick is coming to a teevee near you.

Holy moly. Is it wrong that I'm really excited for the snark potential???

Oh, man. Amy has gotta be PISSED.

And now we know for sure why Jill and Derick are home ...

Annnnnnd, that's it for me.  I'm not spending another moment of my life on these lying, deceitful and disgusting clumps of crap.  They are being rewarded by TLC, and with that , I'm done.

Ya'll totally rock, though.

I will however, resume a boycott against every single TLC sponsor that I can identify and condemn that network with my last breath.  It's probably meaningless, but I'll sleep at night.

It's been real.  See ya'll around campus.

Ah, the death of all our hopes. Nice.

Also, although they don't know it, the death of their long-term best interests and those of their children, in my opinion. I still believe that reality tv is the worst thing -- out of a long list -- of things that have ever happened to that family. The last thing they ever needed was to have an additional inducement to take a false view of reality and their lives.

Wonder how many people will really want to watch Jessa preparing for the birth of her first child. ... Talk about a story line with no hook whatsoever. Boring pampered idiots prepare for an event that most people on earth have also experienced....Aaaaaaaand, so what?

Wow. I'm shocked they're still going through with it. I hope these two nobodies get the worst ratings ever. Good ratings mean there'll be a Jill n' Jessa tv show.

Please, Jesus, if there's another Duggar scandal a'brewin, let it drop NOW.

Jill's 'ministry' will be getting more scrutiny, so that' a good thing. I bet TLC has been filming Jessa all along. Makes me sick. Good thing the husbands both have zero personality and presence. I think this will end up like Kate's final season.

Here's hoping that TLC misread the audience interest in the courting and wedding arcs as evidence that people are interested in Jill/Derick and Jessa/Ben instead of just being interested in courting and weddings. I fear I hope in vain, though.

I share your hope. How much are the Duggars gonna be featured? America does NOT want to see Jim Bob, Josh, or Michelle EVER AGAIN. The stairstep lineup is dull as hell. Bin and Derricks families might be features. I guess a random J'kid or two might be around to help out on screen? I can't see Michelle doling out advice to Jessa on camera. Well, I can see it, but it's ratings poison. Jill and Jessa just can't carry anything not event-related. Dull, dull, dull.

Maybe we'll get Josh&Anna: Hookers on the Brink, this time next year.

Jill's pregnancy episodes were nauseatingly boring, I can't imagine Jessa's will be any better. I think TLC's goal in all of this is to slowly work the entire family back onto the air. Neither Jessa nor Jill has the personality to carry a show on their own, but the collective family does, especially if Boob starts arranging courtships. I wonder if TLC's other shows are lagging in the ratings and they're willing to forego criticism in order to welcome their cash cows back into the fold.

Any guesses as to how pissed off Marjorie Jackson will be if this does happen? She may have cashed in her chips too early...
