The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

Seconded, heartily.  Also:

“'As we commit the work of buying a toothbrush to Him,' one Wisdom Book advises, 'He has promised to make His will known to us.'"

Clearly God laid it on my heart to own a Crest Spinbrush.

"Hey, Dim Bulb: I gave you a large forebrain. Isn't that enough? Pick out your own freaking toothbrush and leave me alone. I have a universe to run." --God.

09/11/15: Duggar records protected, motion says

Records related to a 911 call from the Jim Bob Duggar residence and letters from a judge to Springdale city officials aren't subject to release under a Freedom of Information Act, according to a motion to intervene in a lawsuit filed on behalf of a "Jane Doe" minor.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette sued Sept. 3 in Washington County Circuit Court after Springdale officials refused requests for the documents. They include the recording of the 911 call and supporting documents from May 27 and correspondence between Circuit Judge Stacey Zimmerman and Ernest Cate, Springdale city attorney.

The 911 call is from the case worker when the Duggars weren't cooperative.

Just to make it clear, that is not a ruling from a judge, it's a motion from the complainant.

"I do not believe that the intervention is warranted," said Brandon Cate, an attorney for the newspaper. "We do not seek juvenile court records. We seek public records held by the city of Springdale."

I feel like TLC would make a killing if they waited a few more months for appearance sake and then released the canned season directly to Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc. Jessa's pregnancy announcement, Derick/Jill's decision to go "overseas," Ben's college graduation, the Marsiah courtship that ended in flames...

Confession: I would buy the heck out of that season if it ever saw daylight.

I would too.

How has this not been seen before? How do you pick the best moment?  "I love cousin Jamie, too bad she's going to Hell."  The kid wanting to buy broccoli-- "Sometimes my bones hurt". "Michelle's" wig. Josh being called "BJ" or "Beej?"  All priceless.

If you haven't yet, you need to watch ALL the episodes of Kid Farm. There are only 7 or 8, and it's been a great long while since the last one was made. Pete Holmes and friends watched as much or more of the Duggars than the people on this forum and went to town. I've re-watched them, because, like with a lot of good comedy, there's stuff you miss while you're crying laughing. If only there was a real J.P. lurking around...Mechelle would just LOVE that!!!

"Body dancing"...

"Shopping is when we leave the house. Which can be fun. And scary..."

"It's like when Pacassi was painting on the walls of the Sissy Chapel..."

And, oh, my GOD !!! How much does "Elizabeth" remind me of Anna ?!?! I've said this before, but the only phrase that fits is "freshly tasered".

I would trade just about anything - ANYTHING - to have the Duggars watch Kid Farm ! My bet is that they'd take it seriously, Michelle would be jealous, and JB would be trying to hook up with them for another TV gig.

Bwhahahahaha! "Freshly tasered!" Alone in the house, and my cackling startled a cat.

Don't you know M & JB would probably look on this family as a total threat (hey! They have a show and ONLY have 17 kids!!) and wonder why they never ran into them at Big Sandy.

Since I've binge watched all the episodes recently, something that really cracks me up is Batron (the African-American kid) is a different actor in every single episode, including in the beginning credits where all the kids are "counted." And of course, the parents never notice...

Okay, errr... so I'm not the only one here that binge-watched the entire Kid Farm caboodle ? Guilty as charged, but laughing all the way to the jailhouse ! Liz Tudor (love the name !) you can sit next to me at lunch anytime !!! Sorry to have freaked out your kitty  :)

I found the whole parody series to be eerily, even uncomfortably, accurate, from the spot-on Michelle perm-y, crispy hair that resembles a Top Ramen waterfall, to the far-off, distant attitude of the featured children. They absolutely NAILED the dynamic of the Duggars' group lobotomy...

The home-foolin' segment was of particular interest to me - when a child can't distinguish learning from lunch, and every day starts with the letter "A" then you know you're an uneducated, colossal twat. I'm not even sure if that was from Kid Farm or the actual 19K & Counting show.

17 kids ... give or take. That gets me every time. 16, 17, 18? We're not sure, but it's a lot! Makes me think they might lose track of one, which sounds familiar.

Not to be a spoiler, but there's one episode centered around them going out, and after counting heads, they spend the whole time looking for a named child that doesn't exist.

I don't think JimChelle would be very different had the Duggars and TLC never crossed paths, but I think the daughters would've been far more proactive and less discriminating with their choice in husbands. Jana would've had 2 kids by now. They may not have been so keen with the ill advised Josie and Jubilee pregnancies either.

If TLC had never come along, where would the Duggars be today?  Would they be as famewhorish or would their lives had stayed the same?

Interesting question. It's my belief that they view their children as merit badges from God...like He keeps sending these "gifts" to tell them how great they are. So I suspect the relentless baby production might have stayed the same, as there doesn't seem to be any human intelligence devoted to the practical question of, "can we afford another child financially or emotionally?" They just would have shoved their fecundity into the faces of their fellow cult members and been even bigger buttheads to the other locals instead.

But the TLC attention and $$$ was the perfect incubator for their inherent narcissism. See, God really really likes us best! We're rich!!! We have idiot leghumpers who kiss our asses!!! We are awesome and you aren't!!!

So my prediction would have been the same crap would have happened, but on a much, much smaller scale.

And they showed this on the air? I was a class mom for my kid's PreK and I knew the names of that many children who had never actually passed from my uterus.

They probably still wouldn't have finished the TTH, or it would be "finished" to a much worse standard, since TLC stepped in an did it for that special. Also the less photogenic prairie dresses and jumpers would have stayed longer and they'd probably be less inclined to loads of slap. More of the girls would have had courtships/marriages by now.

I think they'd be living in the TTH that would have 3 bedrooms (w/ tons of bunk-beds) and 2 bathrooms upstairs, and one massive room downstairs, with a half-assed kitchen and w/ 2 more bathrooms. I think they would have 19 kids, girls with perms all dressed in Green Blouse type shirts, jean skirts and flip-flops, boys in khakis, polos and taped up cowboy boots. The boys would be working at the used car lot/towing business. They would be making soap and bread and would be living off love offerings. And everyone from Jinger on up would be married (well maybe not JD).

Is that Bacon? (Or however they spelled it.) I loved the oldest, BJ, with the tambourine solo during the song about the lost kid. I doubt the Duggars have seen this, but I wonder if Amy has. Edited by ramble

Honestly I think it would have been worse. Not that TLC made it good, it just made it less bad in some key areas for the kids. I think all the girls over the age of 17 would be married by now whether they wanted to or not. To me if TLC prevented that then that's a good thing. I think JB is smart enough to know when the "courting" thing wandered a little too far into the 'selling your daughter' realm. I think Michelle would have been even more desperate to have more kids. With the show, she had her adoring fans telling her how amazing she is. That need would still have been there but would have had to come from and increasingly ridiculous family size. That's the only way she knows to be 'amazing'. I don't think much would have changed for Josh. He would still have married Anna and still cheated on her. Without the show it's possible he wouldn't have even gone to RU but I'm not sure if that falls under the bad or good category. Clearly RU isn't going to do diddly squat but at least Anna's getting time without him. Without the public eye my guess is she would have been told she was a lousy wife and Josh would continue to do what he wanted until she got better at it.

As scary as it sounds I think these repulsive things we see in the Duggars: JB arraigning marriage, poor education, uber control, etc, are actually tempered because of the public eye. Left to run amok it could have been worse.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but the Duggs are in the headline, in this story about Bill GotHard: Duggar Homeschool Leader's Facebook Page Bombarded With Sexual Abuse Allegations

This headline ticks me off. Gothard is a religious leader, not a homeschool leader. His organization based on his teaching may have developed a homeschool curriculum but his true evil lies in his religious teaching. This makes it sound like the sexual abuse has to do with homeschooling which isn't the case at all.

  • Love 5

"Homeschool Leader" seems an oxymoron.

I'm not sure why. There are homeschool leaders. For example, there is a woman who is a professor of writing and American literature at William and Mary. Over the years she has written books on classical homeschooling as well as history and writing curriculum for elementary and middle school children. She is considered a homeschool leader.

I meant in the Duggar world of home schooling - no offense intended for homeschooling that actually educates children.

Ahh ok - I thought you meant because homeschoolers learn at home and aren't typically taught by outside people they don't have leaders.

If you think about it I guess Gothard is the Duggar's homeschool leader. He leads them into believing that education is pointless. Lemmings off the side of a cliff....
