Small Talk: The Polygamous Cul-de-Sac

I  understand the fear, concern, heartbreak, and stress in this current situation. I ask that we please remember the politics policy. Keep politics, political references, and political figures (past and present) out of the discussion.

Stay safe and healthy.

Sometimes things come down to the basics. Put a mask on properly. Wear the mask properly. Remove the mask properly. Cover coughs and sneezes properly. Wash hands properly.

The things I’ve seen. 🤦‍♀️

Since I work for the Health Department and give vaccines, "it's common knowledge" doesn't quite work for me.

Thus the continued need for masks.  Look it up here.  The CDC addresses masks and omicron.

There was recently a conference in Austin with 300 attendees.  All were vaccinated, all wore masks.  After the conference, two of the attendees were found to be positive, possibly due to travel.  Of the other 298 attendees, zero cases of Covid.  Zero.

It's so random whether you will catch it or not, like any other airborne virus. I took care of my college age son in fall 2020 in my home for three days.  He had a confirmed case of COVID. I had very close contact, took his temp, gave him food, water and meds, sat and watched TV with him, etc.  I essentially nursed him. I treated him as I have with all my children whenever they were sick. COVID no different in my mind. I never wore a mask and certainly did not distance. I didn't get sick at all, not a sniffle. I have no idea why. Strong constitution/immune system I guess.

True.  I’m just amazed when I see people refuse to get vaxxed, refuse to wear masks, refuse to socially distance and refuse to alter any of their socialization.  And, then when they want to get tested for covid and have to wait in line, there’re furious.  🙄

Why are you amazed when people make choices for their own bodies that are different than yours? Especially when it comes to experimental treatment for a virus with a nearly 100% survival rate. Not to mention those who vaccinated are still catching and spreading the virus.

My husband who is fully vaxxed got covid and gave it to the rest of us in the house. He had the worst case. Even though I caught it, and the kids did, we had minor symptoms. I’m also O- blood type, he is not. There was a study I believe in 2020 where those with my blood type were more resistant. It wasn’t by a huge margin but I do wonder if that’s a factor. There are so many other variables of course, like weight, immune health, etc etc.

There's just no rhyme or reason to who gets covid and how severe. Also no doubt that you increase your chances of staying healthy if you Vax, boost, mask and practice smart distancing. For those who watch 1000 Pound Sisters, Tammy who is close to bed bound, weighs 650 plus and may drink like a fish survived covid earlier this year. Figured it would finish her, but it did not.

I don't think 800,000 people dying is a nearly 100% survival rate.

Unfortunately, those figures are strongly suspected to be overinflated. There was dying from Covid vs dying with Covid, and being lumped together.

Secondly, even if we can prove there were 800k deaths, all percentages I’ve read (they vary slightly by source and also age group) are 97%- 99% survival rate is pretty close to 100%. YMMV of course.

Another factor we need to think about. What percent of people contracted Covid, had mild symptoms and recovered fine but  never tested or reported they might of had Covid. None of those survivals would be counted since it wasn’t officially confirmed. So that 97-99 is probably even higher than we know.

Yep. BIL died of pancreatic cancer in February 2021. When diagnosed in January 2021,  it had metastasized to liver and lungs. But because he tested positive for covid in the hospital, he was considered a covid death, even though no covid symptoms. Government offered up to $8000 to cover burial/cremation expenses. We declined because he was not really a covid death and it seemed dishonest to take the Government money. So, covid death count is overstated by at least one.

Make that two. There was a guy in FL who died in a motorcycle crash and marked as Covid death.

Does anyone else struggle with the week between Christmas and New Year's Day?  I woke up today to my alarm and laid in bed for a full minute trying to figure out why I set my alarm for a Sunday.  Of course, today is Thursday.  And the level of exhaustion I have felt this week is off the charts, which I think is partly due to the fact that I had to make nice with various family members over the past few days, who I love but no longer like because these past two years have really revealed their true selves.  And it's also hard to go into a new year feeling positive and excited, when...........well, you all know, I don't have to tell you.

TL;DR - I am TIRED, y'all. 😴

I would like to think that we can celebrate the upcoming year as another year closer to things getting back to our new normal, whatever that might look like.  It boggles my mind that even with the advances we made this year, we seem to be worse off as this time last year, pre-vax.

I have to think that when this is in our rear-view mirrors, things have to change for the better across lots and lots of different platforms.  To think otherwise is just not something my brain can handle.

I try not to pay attention to the “new year”—there’s always too much hype, commercialism and expectations. To me, the biggest challenge is remembering to put the correct date on things.

I also don’t do new year resolutions (WAY over-commercialized). If there’s something I need to change or a goal I want to reach, I just start it. If it’s important enough to “resolve” to do, it probably should not wait until January 1.

So this time of year mostly consists of annoying holiday commercials to me—you know, the kind where the family in the desert can afford a snow making machine and a brand new 70k vehicle because it’s SO relatable.

Read something that struck me re New Years resolutions. Article suggested tiny ones, like flossing 2 times a week, going through closet and picking 5 things to pitch. I liked the idea and am going to try. And I agree with laurakaye, 2022 may be different, but am hopeful.

I will be heading to bed before midnight on New Year's Eve, there is certainly nothing to celebrate.

This has been an odd week for me ever since all the children left home.  I used to always be off work and planning activities for or with them.  Then it became this very odd no longer a holiday week, but just kind of a dead week.  I have never really celebrated NYE so to me it's an evening to stay home quiet to avoid drunk drivers.  Now it's the week I must return to my house from visiting my children and grandchildren so either a rest or a let down from the three holidays I'm always visiting with them.

I also hate year end summaries on TV & in newspapers.  I lived through it - I don't need to see it again!  I only look at the people we've lost, since they may never be mentioned again.

I'm also retired and tend to watch shows that I've recorded on the DVR but haven't gotten around to watching & clear space to record more when new shows return. I'm half way through the entire season of "Call the Midwife"

Is that the most recent season of call the midwife?  I tried to see it, but could only get clips on PBS app. I can access the Christmas special.  I wonder what’s going on.

I'm watching Season 10 (recorded from PBS in Spokane, on cable in Canada).  I've often had problems with the PBS app. Christmas special includes a leech.

Happy New Year, everyone!  This has been the friendliest and most fun site (in particular, this SW forum) that I've participated in.  We'll be staying at home, and I don't remember how long it's been since we went out on New Year's Eve.  (Probably 1970-somethingk?

Thank you all for being here.  ♥️

Yes, a better year for you and all.  The last bad thing I heard of happening in 2021 was Betty White's death.  May she RIP.

Regarding Day'un and what sounds like his unofficial Asperger's diagnosis, I wonder if he was taken to a specialist beyond the school counselor/school psychologist. I wonder if they are nurturing his special needs or does Robyn just cater to his every whim so he never experiences stress.

My neighbor's son has pretty profound Autism. He is a fascinating human. He can articulate every syllable of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo while playing it on the piano. He has job outside the home and has great technical skills. My neighbors are amazing parents and have provided every avenue for his development and he thrives. They'll be the first to tell you it is a labor of love. I don't think Robyn has that kind of fortitude, which is really (rilly) sad.

ETA: he was nonverbal as a child and worked extensively with paraprofessionals in order to gain his communication skills. Shout out to the paras out there.

Robyn first mentioned Day'un's "Asperger's" diagnosis after 2013 (when that name was retired from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)).  That always made me wonder what sort of "expert" made the diagnosis  and what followup, if any, he was getting.

Is AROARa getting any treatment for her panic/anxiety disorder?  Rather than being coddled and carried up to bed, her future would be brighter if she learned coping mechanisms.

Dayton with autism. Aurora with panic disorder. Sol as Kody said "my most shy child" and Ari with erratic and unregulated sleeping schedules. It does make me think that there is some heavy genetic predisposition to spectrum disorders in the family. Robyn may or may not contribute to the severity or the expression of these issues but something like that is so hard to judge from the outside looking in. So many variables, so many individual factors. Really hard to know and it's pretty common for parents of multiple kids on multiple spectrums to be judged unfairly. I think its a very high likelihood that Robyn has an anxiety disorder herself.  I mean that is just speculating too - a guess. I do hope they've sought reputable outside help and support. I do worry they haven't just given what we know about how Kody operates.

It's pretty apparent IMO that Robyn has convinced her children that they can't live without her.  With the younger two, they can't live without their father, either.  She wants to keep them seemingly forever in her protective cocoon of dependency.  Kootie is apparently fine with everythingk his only wife does.  They are both control freaks.

On another note, RIP Betty White.  I just got the latest People magazine delivered (no judgement, please!)  The cover story:  Betty White turns 100!  She almost got there.

Toodywoody,

Re Dayton and ASD. I've learned so much re children on the autism spectrum in last few years! A school cannot (should not) make any ASD diagnosis. That's up to a psychologist, pediatrician or other expert. Lots of people involved in child's life fill out lengthy surveys, parents are interviewed, developmental milestones are examined, etc. There is not always agreement re the diagnosis, but in order to receive any services- speech, adaptive, cognitive, etc in my public school, there must be a diagnosis from someone with a medical background. Students can be pulled out of their general ed class, a special ed teacher can push into their class, or the student can be in a self-contained room. As with everything, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the outcome.

Some teachers really provide a good environment for ASD students, some don't. I usually get the ASD students since my class is fairly structured with  consistent rules and expectations aka not too much chaos.

Not all disorders are necessarily genetic/inherited. You can acquire them through traumas and experiences in life as well. Your childhood (and how you are raised) is also pretty important.

Just look at the mad dynamics of the Brown family and them dragging the kids through different states whilst pretending to be on the run? Them moving and changing schools on a whim, without proper warning. Their mad dad with his strange thoughts on faith, morale, love and life and last but not least; their entire life laid bare on national tv! I’m actually quite surprised that it’s just four of Robyn’s kids. Well maybe not that surprising….

When it comes to Robyn we have to add the facts that she publicly attacked her kids’ bio dad, dragged them from Montana to Utah to Nevada to Arizona, forced them into an existing family of 17, was hugely in debt,  forced the parental rights away from their dad and accused him of domestic violence. All out in the open for everyone to see and read. That’s enough to screw any child ten times over! Oh I forgot to mention mom’s manipulative and controlling character.

Thank you for your response.

I am in no way saying her kids don't have problems, but could it be a way to keep her kids with her and especially him not kicked to the curb by Kody? And since he has this, is it a way further latch on to Kody and request the nanny? And what of the anxiety attacks of the other, what were the anxiety attacks about, none of my business I know, but what triggers her attacks and was that diagnosed by a real doctor, since the kids don't have insurance, how were both these diagnoses made? The anxiety attacks, make me wonder?  And if both or all kids being on the spectrum I would think they would get insurance and get the proper help they need instead of thinking they can help them. But I know this is Kody and Robyn I'm talking about.

To clarify. I wrote genetic predisposition. The latest research is pretty clear in that they believe these spectrum disorders are epigenetic. Which means you have the predisposition but environmental factors and/or issues like trauma can trigger the expression of the issue. So it's not "inherited" as a given. It's just a certain vulnerability that makes you likely to have issues IF the right trigger is pulled at some point in your life by some other variable.
