S02.E09: Jekyll And Snide

I struggle to wrap my mind around how Kathryn and Craig could take a golf cart out at 3am and the producers and camera folks wouldn't be in their own cart, only a car length behind them. I just don't buy it. If something had happened on that beach between K&C, there's no way there wouldn't be footage.

I love Shep and I understand his concern for Craig, but I thought he was just being mean-spirited toward Craig tonight. His comments about Craig during the bike ride were underhanded and vindictive, as was his heckling Craig during the speech over dinner. Shep made up for it a moment later by graciously thanking Craig for the trip to Delaware which was nice, but too little, too late. And this is coming from someone who thinks Craig is a big loser and that Shep is adorable.

I don't care that TRav was accused of assault or what Kathryn's reaction to that news will be. Snore.

Craig and Kathryn are just two outsiders looking in. Whitless looked scared shitless when Kathryn went after him. Shep was being very rude to Craig. There is no TRav & Kathryn, just TRAv and Kathryn.

I thought Kathryn was itching for a fight ever since she got to Jekyll Island. Quite frankly, I'm with Whitney on this one. Whitney was as an ass, but Kathryn was a complete nut bucket. IMO she was "Bravoing it up" for screen time. If only she had flipped a table. I wonder if Kathryn finds it hard to sit down with Jennifer's head up her ass?

Landon. Landon's sister. No. No.

Sorry but shep looked like a jerk and sweet Cam looked like a pot stirrer! Why run and tell the one person who can't stand Katherine, that she "slept" with craig on the beach.

I thought the resort looked lovely! Craig was right to apologize for the group acting like brats.

Whitney is impossible!

Katherine needs to grow up! Sorry but when you take on grown up roles you have to grow up.

Craig is definitely someone who has lost what ever drive he had, but fuck Whitney and Shep. Unless Craig is begging you for money stop being assholes.

Meow, that got catty fast.

Katherine was amazingly immature, Shep was a petulant bully, Cameran was sanctimonious busy body, Craig was an indiscreet cad, Landon is a moron who miscalculated the group's ability to play "grown" up, Whitney is a total and complete social r***** and weirdo, Jen is a dim bulb and Cooper/JD & wife are fame whores.

Trapping them together was like setting off a bomb for this group ... maybe that was the point ;)

Was Craig just siding with Kathryn because Whitney was a jerk to him in Delaware?  He knows Whit hates Kathryn so he takes her side to make him mad and get Whit back for what he said to Craig's parents.

Again, Landon is completely irrelevant.

I did like that JD and his wife were included, and that JD verified that TRav is unrecognizable while he's campaigning.

I felt bad for finding Shep's impersonation of Craig so funny.  There's no reason in the world why I should feel bad about that, what is happening to me???

If that fancy dinner outside was during the summer, then they were eating rather late.  It doesn't start getting dark until around 8:00 pm in the summer on the East coast.  Sort of ironic to me, because growing up in the South I was a transplant from the West coast, and when staying over at my Southern friends' houses I was always struck by how early they ate "supper"...usually before 6:00 pm.  Maybe it's different if you're Southern and super wealthy.  Whitney walking just a few steps away from the table to smoke a cigarette was SUPER refined and classy!

My husband goes to Jekyll Island every year for a business trip, and I've never gone with him but he always describes it as being generally stinky.  He says the beaches are nasty, and usually there are a lot of dead sea creatures that have washed up.  The hotel he stayed in a couple of years ago was being treated for bedbugs.  I can only assume that the Southern Charm group was staying on the other side of the island from where conventioneers have to go.

It makes me really uncomfortable watching Kathryn drink until she devolves into a screaming trashy redneck.  Yes, Whitney is an ass and I understand why she becomes so frustrated by him, but UGH, I wish she would mature and not act like she's fresh out of prison every time he pisses her off.  I don't believe for one second that the things TRav tells Whitney about Kathryn are actually "blood curdling".  Well, maybe they are to Whitney because the idea of Thomas in a relationship with a woman is so revolting, but to regular people I'm pretty sure their arguments are rather standard and what we would expect, nothing particularly sinister or shocking.  Even if Kathryn is drunk during some of their arguments we have already seen she's not capable of coming up with anything particularly slick or damaging to say.

I'm willing to believe that cameras didn't catch Craig and Kathryn going out on a golf cart at 3:00 am.  It's not like these people are on Big Brother with every word and action being taped 24 / 7 - the cameramen are eventually going to go to bed once the production manager decides that filmworthy activities are over for the night.  If it appeared that everyone had retired to their rooms for the night, I can see C & K managing to slip away undocumented.  The two of them together makes sense in a way, but a relationship would be a disaster.  They'd just enable each other's unhealthy behaviors until they spun so far out of control that I'm afraid the whole thing would end in a Sid and Nancy kind of situation.

Everything about Thomas' election antics bores me.  Even if he had won, I would be bored, but knowing he lost makes it all that much more bleh.

When they were on bicycles and Shep and Craig were arguing back and forth about which way to head to the beach, wasn't that Landon's sister (Powell?) that was with them?  Landon said that she and her siblings basically grew up there on Jekyll Island.  Wouldn't the sister know the correct way to the beach?

The level of immaturity among the main cast members in tonight's episode was just unbelievable.  They were all acting like spoiled children.  It was not a particularly enjoyable episode.  Each of them could use a good disciplinary time out!

And, what was up with the black drapes that Patricia and her butler were hanging in that beautiful beach house??  I loved it when the butler commented that Whitney wasn't a vampire - in my mind I replied "Are you sure????".....

That house is so lovely, and the sunlight coming in from all the windows was beautiful - why was Patricia blocking it?

Scratching my head trying to figure out why she bugs me so much.  Is it that she always laughs in her TH's at whatever she says & that whatever she says is always in an ain't-I-so-clever kinda way?  Yup, I kinda hate that.  Or it that she always remains an observer, commenting on the others in an above-it-all snotty way?  Don't care for that much either.

She seems to have no connection to anyone else in the cast.  She interacts with them, but barely & hesitantly & probably only cuz the producers force her to.  I don't hate her, but I don't care anything about her either.  She needs to do something on the show & get involved with the others more or get lost.  Maybe she's just not a good fit with this cast.  You can't remain an observer in any of Andy's shows.

Apparently, it is the catalyst leading to big changes to come.  And the producers seem to be getting desperate to include anything which might show some drama.  I think they're wrong to include forced trips & to encourage Kathryn to throw hissy fits.  This ep sucked cuz it felt forced & fake.

Hey producers, just show Charleston & have this cast interact.  I think there's enough there to provide us with chuckles & giggles.  Oh, I'm OK with Kathryn showing her hillbilly side, but when it flows naturally.  Her hissy fit felt like it came out of nowhere & was probably driven by producers to build the drama for an otherwise boring ep.  Not good -- when it's that obvious.

That house is so lovely, and the sunlight coming in from all the windows was beautiful - why was Patricia blocking it?

I suspect Pats was thinking like a decorator.  Sunlight can cause serious fading to the colors of fabrics.  The house & the sunlight looked great to me.  And yeah, maybe super-creepy Whit is hiding his fangs, but he always looks like a vampire to me.

You summed it up quite well for me. She has a sorority /debutant way about her that I find annoying.

Think the charm is wearing thin now where we are seeing cracks beneath the facade. Outsiders will never be truly accepted because they weren't raised with their sensibility. Craig is always being corrected but that is because he is trying to be like them. They have a very narrow minded mentality that I would find suffocating.

After spending an afternoon having wine and conversation with the one and only Nathalie Dupree in Charleston this weekend, this group is truly.... for lack of a better word.... déclassé. I hate that I look foward to Kathryn's drunk ramblings, because she's got the most beautiful little girl who will one day wonder where her mother went wrong, but I guess it's the train wreck that you can't look away from.

How do I put this delicately? Kathryn has the behavior, speaking voice, and seedy look of a Rock of Love contestant or cast member of Bad Girls Club . I know she's a scion but her maybe TRav was confused and she just drives a Scion cuz she very gritty and basic.

She also has a receding hairline.

Shep is an asshole.

Landon looks like Kathryn Hahn (from Crossing Jordan and Parks and Recreation).

When they played croquet all I could think of was Heathers .

Hey, Landon valley girl, please stop squinting your eyes and laughing at everything you say in your talking heads. So annoying....and you're not funny.

Why can't these people enjoy a nice, mellow mini vacay without bitching about how boring it is and how OLD everybody staying there was. They are all in there 30's and 40's. (except for Kathryn and Craig). Grow the EFF up, you rich, ungrateful, entitled brats! Maybe if any of them actually worked their asses off during the week like the rest of us common folk, they would appreciate an opportunity for a little peace and quiet in a beautiful place. Your proper southern mommies and daddies would not be proud of your behavior tonight.

They had to go and ruin a perfectly good Shep.

His behavior, and that of the rest of his castmates, was disappointing and annoying. Here they all are, at a beautiful place, in the prime of life and with many blessings, and they behave like spoiled brats. Of course the show is scripted, but it's been scripted in a very bad direction.

I'm too busy laughing at Kathryn's Bad Ass imitation to take her seriously. Combined with her constant search for slights -- it's all she talks about -- she's tiresome.

I don't mind Landon. Her positive spirit is a balance to the clumsily manufactured drama. She does indeed resemble Kathryn Hahn.

Almost the only time I've seen Kathryn smile on this entire show was last night, across from Craig. Those two are well matched. Both shallow, both love to drink to oblivion...that's all I've got but they are a match. I agree Kathryn seems low class.

Shep was a total jerk to Craig and it was a real downer. I still love him but he lost a couple of adorable points.

Kathryn's meltdown with Whitney seemed so fake. Like someone else pointed out, it came out of the blue and her shrieking was too extreme.

Must be nice that her mom will just watch Kensie for her for two nights so she can go out of state and get drunk with friends. I almost never got-or get-a break from my kids and certainly never an overnighter even though I longed for some nights out. Kathryn certainly has it made. A nanny always present and playing with Kensie so Kathryn can text on the couch, nights away in Jekyll Island...

Love JD and his wife.

I said awhile back that Cameran isn't as sweetie-pie as she seems. She has always made fun of the others and acted slightly superior. Please.

Absolutely classic!!!

The appeal of this show has been the fun of the group.  This episode was disappointing, I don't want to see these people fighting or being brats in general.  Boo.

Let's paint Kathryn in a different light here for a moment and see how this changes things:  imagine if she were a good 50 pounds overweight, homely and not fashionably dressed.  Would anyone give this girl the time of day, not to mention hundreds of thousands of second chances or be overly concerned with her feeling "accepted"?  Good grief!  If she looked like any basic middle America girl, someone would have taken her by the arm and promptly escorted her off the hotel grounds when she was raving at Whitney.  Why her behavior is continually given a pass, I can't understand.  If she's not finger waving, neck weaving and raging like a Walmart shopper, she's stomping her feet, sulking and acting like a two year old.  She's not a classy gal.  Makes me seriously wonder how she was raised.  If she didn't have the weave, the make-up, the face, the figure and the gorgeous gowns, she wouldn't be let within 100 feet of this group.  But man, is her appearance ever deceiving.  I'm convinced the girl is trash, plain and simple.

I'm more convinced she's 22 dealing with 40 year olds judging everything she does.  It's annoying, probably a little hurtful and she acts out as a coping mechanism.

All of them get away with the things they do due to random gifts they got in life. Shep's asshatery will be forgiven because he's Shep. Cam has stirred the shit exponentially, but she's adorable and above the fray so no one calls her on anything. Whitney is a disgusting douche with Clairol Lady hair, but because of who he and his mother is, he's not cursed out anywhere near as much as he deserves.  Let's not forget dear TRav, who somehow thought a chick barely out of her teens was who he should hook his star to, because she was hot with long legs.

We're not dealing with a sterling set of people, here.

IIRC, when Whitney and Shep had their party, Cameran mentioned that they were renting the beach house, and it is for sale, fully furnished, so it shouldn't be Patricia's worry if the furniture fades.

I'm getting a very creepy vibe from Patricia and Whitney this season (well, much more than I did last season).  I just think there is something very weird about the both of them.  I don't know if Patricia is just playing up the "grand dame of the South" thing for the cameras, or if she is really as strange as she is coming across to the viewers.

She'd still have her family name which means something to some people.  You could say the same about each of them.  Take away:

Whitney's money & mother

Shep's boyish looks, surface charm, money, family name

Thomas's looks, money, family name, sober charm

Craig's looks, earnestness

Landon's looks, earnestness

Cameran's looks, surface charm

All but Whitney are trading in on their looks.  (Whitney would but unfortunately, that's not in the cards for him).  All are trading in on their family name (if they have one) and on some surface personality.  Kathryn's no different.

Kathryn needs to realize something. Just because Thomas is wealthy and white, doesn't matter, until she gets married, she's a babymama.

TRav is interesting he's kinda attractive but in some lights or only when r makes certain expressions.

I realized Kathryn's receding hairline might be to her edges. Bad or heavy weaves, a high hairline, and big forehead can give that "check out my skull" affect.

That house was verrrry nice. I loved the porch and Whitney's room. And an outside dinner was a homey yet elegant touch. It it was ruined by Shep acting like the James Spader character in Pretty in Pink and Kathryn screeching and grabbing people like a deranged banshee.

I think it was something like "If we act happy, people will treat us happy." I was like, yes, please take that advice right now Kathryn.

A few things:

1 - Leg o' Mutton sleeves went out in the 80's.

2 - As long as Kathryn isn't married to TRav, what she does is in no way out of line, insofar as Craig is concerned.  There is no commitment from Thomas in any way.

3 - Run Tell Dat - really???   And that was meant to help the situation how??

4 - Whitney has no standing as far as Kathryn's relationship is concerned - he's jealous that he can't have Thomas for himself.

5 - As Dr. Phil often says, even a pancake has two sides:  Whitney's comment about the 'blood curdling' things he's heard about Kathryn from Thomas?  What about the other side, Whitney?  What about all the times Thomas has dissed her in public?  What about all the atrocities Thomas has committed?  Why doesn't she run to his side on the assault issue?  Real clear, folks - she's been pushed into the background (as was shown in the preview for next week) and is not welcome.  Why go where you're not welcome?

I have to side with Kathryn here - can't have it both ways.  Either she's part of this relationship or she isn't and Thomas is clearly not wanting her to be part of the relationship.

Kathryn came out on that porch gunning for Whitney.  It was obvious that way whoever was sitting next to Whitney basically jumped out of their rocking chair and Kathryn jumped right in....she was ready to go off on him.  I don't know how much she heard, or exactly what she heard, but she was batshit crazy!!  While I agree that Whitney is a douche of the highest caliber, I also think that Kathryn needs to take a long look at herself, too.  She seems to blame everyone for trying to drive a wedge between Thomas and herself, except the person who may be the one who wants to drive a wedge between them - Thomas!

First, she blamed Whitney, then, she blamed the Sandy Duncan look-alike campaign manager, and then she blames Whitney again.  Maybe it is her immaturity, or maybe she is afraid to admit to herself that Thomas is just not that into her, except as the mother of his daughter.

Whitney is creepy and snarky, and he is also a major douche (again....), but he is also pretty astute and a good observer, and unfortunately, he is truthful, even when he maybe should just keep his mouth shut.

I also noticed that when the information came out about Thomas' assault charge, that Whitney blamed Kathryn for ruining his campaign, because the woman who pressed the charge is Kathryn's stylist.  Does he think that Kathryn and her stylist set Thomas up with that?  I don't think Kathryn is that diabolical or stupid....

I also lost a little love for both Shep and Cameran this episode.  Shep was being so rude and dismissive of Craig.  Cameran couldn't wait to tell anyone and everyone all the gossip she had about both Craig and Kathryn.

And, why is Cooper even there?  He is like an annoying mosquito to me - buzzing around, trying to be important.

Also, what was up with that dress that Landon was wearing?  It looked like something she found in an attic closet of the mansion they were staying in.  It reminded me of something that Blanche DuBois would have worn.  She had to have been sweating horrible during that dinner - not just because of the awkwardness of the whole dinner, but because of the dress!!

Overall, this wasn't my favorite episode.

I know nothing about this assault charge, but I find it really weird.  On what occasion would Thomas be alone with Kathryn's hairdresser to slam a door on her arm?

Kathryn may not have cooked it up because that would be the height of stupid, but could the hairdresser have fabricated it in order to try to squeeze money out of Thomas?

As for Craig and Kathryn spending the night on the beach, WHY would Craig tell Cameron or anyone about that?  Maybe he was trying to make it seem innocent by being upfront about it rather than hiding it, but I'm with Cameron - why are you putting yourself in a situation to be on a golf cart at 3am with your friend's baby-mama?  There was nothing good that was going to happen there.

I'm struggling with this a little because, on the one hand, Kathryn and Craig are two consenting adults and they should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want. On the other, the whole story is super odd to me. Like, why would Craig ever admit that he and Kathryn had to cuddle with one another for warmth? Or that the two of them got lost and couldn't find the hotel? Or tell Cameran that anything had happened at all? And if he didn't want to keep it under his hat and felt the need to be upfront with Cam, he could have simply said, "Kathryn and I took the golf cart out and we spent the entire night on the beach talking because she was upset about Whtiney." Although I'm sure the rest of the group still would have gossiped about it, at least there wouldn't be Craig's own damning admission that they'd been physical to keep warm.

I think Craig always had a crush on Katherine. It really pissed him off when she slept with everyone but him which is why he was such a dick to her last season. She probably would have gotten around to him if she didn't get pregnant. Maybe she'll get around to it now, although it would just be a hook up because Craig has nothing to give her. Financially.

I started to give Kathryn a pass by reminding myself that at 22 I was still in the habit of drinking too much at social functions. But then I also reminded myself that I was not someone's mother, and I certainly wasn't trying to snag some old geezer (by comparison only, I am older than T Rav)  with political ambitions.  Sorry, you want to play grown up, play it.

Kathryn is already bitter at 22, she drinks too much, and is really a total buzz kill for any social function.  I can't figure out if she is also batshit crazy or smart enough to have figured out how to snag maximum screen time (thank you, Teresa, Brandi, Tamara, et al, for the lessons).

Oh, and I have finally decided for sure, I just don't like Landon. Not quite sure what bugs so much and, because she is a dog lover, I really wanted to like her. But I don't.

Do like her dog though.

Also, gotta hand it to Craig - he's withstood the Mean Team assaults for two episodes now, with class.

Kathryn overheard Whitney while she was walking down the steps to go out to the porch.  Cameran said you could hear what ever was going on in the building.  Whitney wants Kathryn and TRav to breakup so that TRav will pay attention to him again.  Whitney didn't have a "girlfriend" until TRav and Kathryn got together.  He's jealous of Kathryn and has tried to do what he can to break them up, not realizing that having a baby makes it really complicated.

I would guess that Whitney actually asked his mom for blackout curtains, I could see him wanting to sleep during the day so he can hang out with his band or much younger friends at night.

I don't think it's fair to judge Kathryn about not being at home, when Thomas isn't either.  Why would he need to spend nights away for a local campaign, that no one (including himself) thinks he has a shot at winning?  For JD to say he's unrecognizable is something.

Landon appears to think she's better than everyone else including Charleston.  She seems to like being the center of attention yet, is just awkward in general.  In the beginning she seemed to be pretty good friends with Shep, I think it's curious how she doesn't really seem to know Shep or Cameran let also the rest of the cast.  She brought he sister to hang out with instead of the rest of the cast.

I thought she looked ridiculous and was channelling Holly Hobbie.  For those not familiar: http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/jraesoriginals/HollyHobbieKittyCat1.jpg

Whoever thought casting her was a good idea was a misfire, in my opinion.  She bugs me so much!! Why does she have to laugh after every single sentence that she says, and that everyone else says?  When Craig and Shep were fighting at dinner, she was still laughing and had a huge grin.  I just don't get her at all.

Oh no, my Shep love is waning a bit.  This is the first episode I saw him act better than everyone else. I thought he was always happy-go-lucky and could make his own fun, whether at a black tie event or yes, at a "retirement home."  Interesting we're finally seeing this side of him.  What a gorgeous place to spend a weekend!  He acted like a spoiled brat, perfectly expected from Whitney, but not Shep.

Landon appears to think she's better than everyone else including Charleston.

Yeah, but even more than that, she seems detached from the rest of the cast.  Doesn't bode well for her if she remains this way.  She better do something or it's one season for her.  Andy does NOT tolerate anyone just staying on the sidelines making snide observations.  That ain't gonna fly -- at all.  Whether she wants to or not, the producers are gonna force her to interact.  And it could get ugly.  Me hopes so.  How bout dressing her real pretty & putting her in a mud wrestling match with Kathryn -- in front of TRav's Charleston "downtown" place?

One thing I liked about this cast is that they didn't seem like the usual Housewives yelling & screaming types -- well,, except for Kathryn, who is providing us with the crazy young hot chick stereotype.  So I guess it's OK to have her be yelling & screaming, but in general, it doesn't seem like a very Charleston thing to be doing -- at least not in public.

Thomas is a dullard & a buffoon.  That's it.
