Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

I assume I'm looking at this correctly (I don't see any motion, so going with Nemo wasn't climbing up)...so Nemo falls asleep hanging half off the couch, and everything thinks it's adorable and photographs it instead of moving him to a safe place to sleep? Any pictures I have ever seen of a parent/child sleeping, the parent is holding the child.
Why am I surprised yet totally not surprised by this picture??

Because there is damn little nurturing going on in this whole family. Kids are possessions, assets, evidence that the parents are godly and blessed. They are born sinners from day one, who need to be disciplined and punished so that they are saved from their innate sin. They are allegedly loved, and certainly their parents burble on SM about how adorable they are.

But Nurie's been well trained in IFB ways, and any biological maternal instinct she may have, to move her tiny child into a comfortable position, has been overruled by the training. Instead she takes a pic of her beloved husband sleeping while her kid pretty much dangles off the sofa, and then her mother posts it to SM as being so cute. I'd like to think she moved Nemo into a comfy position after the photo was shot but I wouldn't bet a hot dinner on it.

And Nathan will not think it’s wrong in anyway because he had a similar upbringing. He is one of 7, not a large family by fundie standards. And yet he had 15 minutes one on one weekly time with his mother.

I do work from home, Jillybean. A legit position that doesn't involve selling poison. Thanks anyway.

Ah, but it's poison sanctioned by God.

So, if I understand correctly, Jill is basically trying to say in her usual ignorant, judgmental, condescending, hypocrital way  that if you dont agree with her beliefs you are evil and a fool.

Jill is such a condescending, judgmental prig. Nice of her to show it off for all to see. It's not enough that she worships the right god in the right way, and she's the very most devout and the biggest martyr, but she has to tell you about it. Frequently.

That's just sad.   With 7 kids, it's RIGHT THERE.  You could set aside a day for each of them.   Okay, I guess not Sunday, so someone might have to double up.   But if you REALLY wanted to you could figure out more than 15 minutes a week for alone time with each kid.

But I guess these families are too busy telling OTHER families how to raise their kids to pay attention to their own.

I laugh but my best friend brought an electric blanket for her husband's Christmas present to her. She drew the line at wrapping it.

I’m glad Tessie got a jacket, albeit a thin one. I hope she gets to keep it rather than it being added to the Rod community closet. I wonder how many of the children’s gifts actually came from their parents. I know David’s sister gave the little girls the porcelain dolls awhile ago. I wonder if any other relatives pitched in.

I grew up with a family where the Mom would buy things on deep discount throughout the year and store them in a closet.  When a birthday came around, she would grab something from the closet.  I think this is what Jill does.  There's no Christmas shopping and there's no buying a gift with a specific recipient in mind.  She goes to the junk drawer and says, "this'll work".

Oh, but her gifts better be personal and the most specialist evah!!  She's got some bragging and showing off to do!  There's nothing Jill likes better than making others jealous of her (self-imagined) perfect life!

How very Christian.

They still sell Viewmasters?? I got a Viewmaster for Christmas in 1984. It was Michael Jackson’s Thriller. One of my favorite gifts ever. I know the Rods are behind the times, but wow.

I don't remember when I got mine but it was likely around the same time. Mine was an A-Team one because I was obsessed with the A-Team. I was surprised to see it being a gift to a child born 40 years after me.

Probably not if they know anything nice will be confiscated by Jill as "hers."   Why buy things for the kids they won't be able to keep?

I don't know if DBD's mom gives the kids anything, but it doesn't really look like it. And no way are the senior Noyses buying gifts for their 35 grandkids and three great grands (pretty sure one of Lisa's kids has a baby).

He's one of eight. Esther, Rebekah, Daniel, Priscilla, Anna, Susanna, Nathan, and David. It may not have been a huge family by fundie standards, but it's still a very large family. Difficult for any parents to give attention equitably.

You're right about the generational shitty parenting.

Thank you, I totally forgot about Priscilla, just like her parents. IIRC Anna was talking about those 15 minutes like it was the greatest parenting in the world. Since she already has 7 kids I wonder how much one on one time she gives them.

I forgot about Susanna when I first made the list!

My guess is the M kids get more attention than Ofsmuggar herself got from her parents, but still not enough. Seven kids is just too many for one parent, or even two, to successfully care for.

Not to mention that the 8 Keller kids are spread over 17 years (unlike the Rods, who had their first 8 kids in 8 years.. yikes!). The oldest two Keller girls married when the youngest two boys were still pretty young. The fact that the parents needed 15 minute scheduled meetings for their kids is pathetic.

If anybody in my family(especially my mother)gave me or my husband a pillow with a picture of us kissing, it would be in the garbage the second that person left our house.

She didn't even bother to put the correct sized pillow insert in the pillow cover.  Those pillows are very flat with a lot of room around the edges.  But they had better have them on display when BME goes to their houses.

Fundism does seem to attract control freaks.   Which is what it is more about than honoring God.  Casting under the guise of religion lets them get away with a lot without question.   But its really about control.   Hence the kids MUST obey and the lack of opportunities for them.   Can't let them have an independent thought or the ability to get away from the control, umm parental, unit.   It starts with blanket training and continues right up to choosing the spouse.   Although JB screwed up there and a few husbands got out from under his thumb.   One even had the audacity to sue him.   Jill makes sure none of that will happen by marrying her daughters off to doormats who will perpetuate the cycle.

I knew there were eight Kellers, but if I did forget any of them, it would have been David. Until Nathan married into the Rod family, he and David were basically interchangeable for me LOL.

No wonder they were interchangeable - didn't they tend to wear matching polo shirts? I wonder if Nathan gave David a matching message shirt like the one he's been sporting in the Christmas photos?

Jill is raising an army for God; the fact that these little people are her children rarely gets in her way. Armies work on hierarchies and obedience, so Jill and David have done a good job in achieving this particular mission. The kids are probably conscripts for life.

Jill has a lot of daughters to marry. As hard as she tries to find limp doormats for all of them, there's bound to be at least one son-in-law who doesn't fall perfectly in line. Jill and David will grow old, sick, and tired. They will become dependent. Things could get interesting.

I disagree with the statement that 7 children cannot be successfully cared for by one or two parents.

My mother was one of six and had a vastly different experience than you claim to have had. My birth grandmother came from a family of 13 (spread over nearly 30 years), and had a different experience than you claim. Some of her sisters had 6, 10, and 13, children, and had different experiences. I don't think it's a coincidence that the younger of the 13 had only two each or that only a few of the 63 grandchildren had more than four or five children apiece -- and those were mostly before the pill was easy to access.

YMMV. I stand by what I said -- that one or even two parents cannot successfully care for a large family. Quality over quantity.

Every time I see that I have to wonder if it was an appointment type thing to discuss religious matters and she surely had to be able to talk the children as individuals as they went about daily life.  Gardening she could talk to one or two children and while making meals and other activities. It's so natural to me that it seems is how most people do it.

A maternal great-grandmother had 12 children, and advised her children not to have so many.  The most anyone had was 5, and most had 2 or 3.  A paternal great-grandmother had 3 children, and told my grandmother when she was having the 4th child that it was one too many, and there were ways to prevent that.  It's humorous because she was Irish Catholic.

My mom came from a family of 8 kids. My grandmother did all the cooking, bathing and diaper changing (it was the time of diaper pins and she didn't want the older kids accidentally poking a wiggly baby). I don't really know how much my grandad contributed to that part of the household. He did do childcare. My mom, as the oldest girl and her older brother to a lesser extent, did a lot of sibling watching so that her mom had time to do all of those things. Not as bad as a sister-mom situation, but my mother wasn't super keen on the amount of extra work she was expected to take on (and I'm an only child by choice). My grandmother has said that she wouldn't have had so many kids if the pill was available (they were also a very working class family and money was pretty tight).

When Pampers first came on the scene in the mid to late 60s, you still needed diaper pins to fasten them.  My next to youngest brother (#5 out of 6 brothers) wore them for a few months until he was toilet trained.  When brother#6 was born about 3.5 years later, he was exclusively wearing Pampers, except for a few times when we ran out of them and had to use cloth diapers.
I do remember using  electrical tape or duct tape to fasten my brother’s diapers when I had misplaced the pins.  I think that Pampers finally came out with attached tape strips sometime in 1970 or 1971.

Oh gosh I remember that.  Those Pampers were what we used sometimes when we were away from home for Sweet Son.  And the pins made holes in the plastic and then they leaked.  They have come a long way.  Do we think the Duggars and their friends and family use disposables?  I used to wash diapers and hang them on a clothesline!
