TheOtherOne November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) I. LOVE.THIS. SHOW. I don't even care how stupid the flashbacks were to Fitz saying "Truman" and Cyrus feeding Michael "Roosevelt" after Mellie said it, because they evidently assumed the audience was so stupid we couldn't remember that--let alone didn't see it coming a mile away--and needed to be spoonfed it. Because everything else was SO GOOD. The sheer emotional intensity of all of Abby's scenes, and the Rowan/Olivia showdown--with Olivia not backing down an inch when I was convinced she would, and Olivia's final play--BRILLIANT. Olivia Pope Getting Shit Done Like a FUCKING BOSS! THAT'S why I watch this show. The only thing that would have made it better was if Abby had shot that fucker in the face. bmoore4026 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Well, I didn't much care for this episode until the last five minutes. Where the hell has ruthless Olivia been? SallyAlbright November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Olivia's father is ruining this show for me. I'm at the point where I can't even look at his face, much less stand to hear his stupid voice make another stupid, obnoxious speech. I'm sure Joe Morton is lovely in real life, but his character can't die soon enough for my liking. Also, the Olivia/Fitz phone sex was creepy and uncomfortable. I usually see their chemistry, but that didn't work. Everything else was pretty good, although unfortunately I find Michael Trucco to be really handsome so I didn't hate Charles as much as I should have. What can I say, I'm shallow with my TV. 9 Link to comment

It is about time we saw him. I liked what the show said about him and about women who spoke up about things like this. The men eventually go on ....the women disappear. I liked the resolution. Cyrus has always been my favorite character. He is fun. He is clever. And he is not someone you want to mess with. "Old Mellie is back and you remember how much you hated her." I think Fitz might have been better off with Smelly Mellie. Mellie was essentially right. She fell down for three months and no one was there to help her. She has been holding things together for Fitz for their entire marriage. The scene between Olivia and Tom was amazing. "You don't have a father. you have Command." But I will say in two weeks' time we've had just as many references to Liv's lotus flower. Go for what you know, Shonda. So, it takes us four seasons to give Tom more than one sentence and he launches into speechifying like Joe Morton? I wish Abby would have shot me in the face. Speaking of Abby, she hit every note perfectly of an abused ex-wife. From the pained attempt at being publicly cordial to her body completely betraying her with nausea. I normally dislike Abby, but she made me feel for her this week. I get why she was guarded (read: bitchy) with David. It was a protective function. Olivia needs another henchman at OPA. With Huck about to go down for child stalking, Quinn can't hold it down by herself. Cyrus deserves whatever Portia de Rossi dishes out. I was hoping Huck was lurking around one of those corners so he could release his inner demons. Rowan needs to be taken down, but I am not for any team that Fitz is on. FilmTVGeek80 November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 I'm not a prude. I watch porn, for God's sake, but Fitz went on about kissing Olivia so she can taste herself I literally recoiled. Gross, gross, gross. And then Olivia started touching her boob - come on! Jesus! I've never been all in for the Olitz ship. I've always thought they had chemistry, but I never actively rooted for them, but now I just actively dislike them. They're written, at this point, with less class than a Skinemax flick. And, good Lord, this is supposed to be the freakin' President of the United States, and he's panting after his mistress like a lovesick schoolboy all because she simply said there was hope for them. This couple, this man, is just pathetic! I've definitely reached my limit with the speeches. I think Joe Morton is wonderful, but it is ridiculous that one freakin' episode can't go by without a speech from him. And then they decided to beat Tom with the monologue stick, and all of a sudden he starts droning on. Great performance, but could not have felt more scripted if Tom had pulled out a manuscript and read it on-screen. 12 Link to comment

SophiaPehawkins November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Mellie lost her child and that's where my sympathy for her ends. Fitz hasn't always treated her well, but she's hardly been a saint. She wanted to be first lady and she didn't want the divorce. They've both done shitty things. I am an Olitz shipper so maybe I'm not completely unbiased, but the heart wants what the heart wants. I was very taken with Abby's breakdown. All her reactions felt realistic and it got to me. It also helped that Olivia was there for her and it's great continuation of that supportive relationship, especially in regards to Chip. I loved that ending and Olivia being a badass once again. That's what made the show what it was. Season three had a really weepy, overly emotional Olivia and that got old really fast. Problem-fixer Olivia is more my speed. I'm also interested in seeing where they're going with that other case. The one with the guy that killed himself in front of Quinn. 5 Link to comment
jjj November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 There was a lot of seasons one and two in tonight's episode, which is what made it so good. Cyrus conniving (and getting the payoff), Olivia & Co. storming into the bake sale campaign headquarters and telling them, "I'm in charge now." Olivia being vulnerable, but also getting clear-eyed enough to see who is who, then mercilessly moving in for the kill (well, almost-kill of Tom, but she needed him to survive). There was one moment I just loved, when she was gently telling the Senate candidate that just a few adjustments would make her a more viable candidate: "Look, I'm a feminist (says Olivia), and I understand if this goes against your principles, but just a few alterations will make a big difference." I loved that because Olivia is right, it is not fair that women need to do that (not having the uniform of a good suit and good haircut that transforms men), but that it was a reality that would make a difference. And how adorable and effective was that campaign ad with the child? "Elect my Mom Susan to the Senate" This was a chock-full episode of old-school Scandal! 6 Link to comment
Dowel Jones November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Coming on the heels of the recent elections, I think Shonda managed to make a good point with that campaign room scene. "I'm in charge now", and "I can make you Senator, I will make you Senator", and "Just a few alterations....." It's not about the candidate, it's about the campaign manager. So glad the bombing didn't amount to much; that might have actually required some Presidentin' on fitz's part. 2 Link to comment
Nanrad November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) I have very little sympathy for Mellie when she complains about how horribly boring it is to be First Lady. You wanted to be First Lady so badly that you rigged an election, Mellie. Yes, but it was originally as a partner with Fitz not to be ornamental. That was why she stayed, and then got displaced with Olivia. Mellie lost her child and that's where my sympathy for her ends. Fitz hasn't always treated her well, but she's hardly been a saint. She wanted to be first lady and she didn't want the divorce. They've both done shitty things. I am an Olitz shipper so maybe I'm not completely unbiased, but the heart wants what the heart wants. At this point, I think Fitz is worse. His actions doesn't only hurt Mellie, they hurt Olivia too. And like Mellie said, she's supported him for years and he couldn't even support her for two months. Fitz is just a shitty person. Whether or not he's in love with his spouse anymore, they still shared a child AND he saw her struggling. You'd think he'd help her out more rather than his passive support. Because even when he was struggling, Mellie still tried to help--actively. I think when it comes to Fitz's love, it's toxic. He tried to kill himself because Olivia left. ::shifty eyes:: The more I see and hear about Fitz's behavior, the more I believe that Fitz is in lust/obsessed with Olivia. Olivia left him so he could work on his marriage and be a better president--> her love was selfless. Fitz's behavior regarding her has increasingly selfish. It's all about him and he's never once asked her how she once felt about everything that happened it's ONLY about WHEN they can be together. Edited November 8, 2014 by Nanrad 2 Link to comment
2KllMckngBrd November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Papa Pope delivered his psychotic version of the "I brought you into this world, I can take you out" speech, and Olivia didn't miss a step, or a beat. I fucking loved it. I like original recipe, S1 Olivia who was never playing. "It's handled" came from somewhere, and I am so happy to see the show return to what made them a hit. I tweeted that Abby (actually I tweeted Gabby b/c I have always hated the character) should have blown Chippers' ass away and then called the team to handle, b/c it's Quinn Bitch and Huck would have known what to do with the body. Dammit. Abby was so good I felt sorry for her. Like others mentioned, Darby Stanfield made you feel the battered woman syndrome and PTSD thru the tv. It was visceral she was so good. I have mentioned on here, on twitter, and to anyone who world listen that I felt like a lot of Abby's backstory had been retconned. B/c I couldn't figure out why she was could exist in such a high profile position, since she was supposed to be in an almost "battered woman witness protection program". I knew I had remembered the very early eps correctly. But whatever. lol. The show dealt w/it. Sort-of. So time for me to move on. And yeah, Her discussing what happens to women who speak out was accurate and timely, and very real. And apparently Tom can act. It would have been nice too know that before. Fitz has always looked bitchified. And he definitely earned that description tonight. Olivia got him trained like a circus animal. Mellie never stood a chance. Whether you like the character or not, there have been 3 people in their marriage for quite some time, and Fitz needs to stop acting like Mellie is the person who added the 3rd. 4 Link to comment
Eolivet November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Influential Republican Senator "Lewis McDonnell?" I see what you did there, Shonda. I really liked this episode, as well -- and I love the idea of Liv and Fitz "teaming up" to help Jake at the end. Finally, this show has remembered it's always worked best as a soapy political thriller, not a watered-down spy drama. I see Joe Morton falling to the Curse of the Guest Actor Emmy Winner pretty soon, though I hope Rowan just disappears off to an island, like Olivia did. I think it would be fun to see him surface a year from now and try to wreak havoc again. But Shonda usually has more permanent solutions in mind. 1 Link to comment
Oblique Angle November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Thank you, Shonda, for using Chaka Khan's version of "I'm Every Woman". Not that there's anything wrong with Whitney's cover but it was nice to hear the original classic for a change. That was quite the virtual tongue bath Tom gave Olivia tonight. Helen of Troy. Seriously? Hyperbole much? Glad they dispensed with Abby's abusive, slimy ex in one episode. He wasn't believable to me and seemed to serve only to give the actress who plays Abby some Emmy bait scenes. Nice to see that the leader of the free world has time to be having phone sex on his little burner phone. And I don't know why Olivia was getting so hot and bothered; Fitz' secksay talk isn't nearly as good as Jake's, IMO. I think there's a thin line between having confidence in your abilities and simply being smug because you're able to screw your sidepieces inside the Oval Office. And apparently Tom can act. It would have been nice too know that before. Guess SR decided to throw him a bone on his way out the door. And can we get some coordinates for where his child is while he's paying for peen? Yeah, the child purchased as a bribe to keep his husband in line. I hope innocent little Ella never finds out that her remaining father basically regarded her as a tool from the very beginning. She could be another Olivia Pope in the making, haplessly driven to prove her worth to worthless men. Julia November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Helen of Troy. Seriously? Hyperbole much? You know, I actually think that's pretty apt. Helen of Troy was one of the highest status women of her time, and her entire role was to act as a political bone for powerful men to fight over. Homer sure as hell didn't spend any time talking about who Helen wanted to be with, because the important thing was the dicksize war between the guys who wanted to own her. Sounds like Olivia to me. 8 Link to comment
Oblique Angle November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Helen of Troy was the daughter of Zeus, the highest Greek god. Rowan may be extremely powerful but he's not a god and he's not immortal. Even vampires can be killed. And Olivia is a gorgeous woman but the most beautiful woman in the world? Um, no. The only part of the comparison which works for me is that it's guaranteed that if necessary, First Fool for Love Fitz would certainly marshal all the forces of the US military to rescue her if it were necessary. A thousand ships, a thousand fighter jets, a thousand tanks, a thousand drones, whatever. I know KW is the star of the show and that it's general practice for the star to be propped via complementary dialogue. However, IMO, an over-the-top comparison like that coming from what so far has been a third- or fourth-level character was way too much of a hard sell. Four seasons in, I don't think either KW or Olivia Pope needed it. 3 Link to comment

DearEvette November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) This is the most fun I have had watching this show since S2. - Really enjoying them getting Liv back to basics. She was the MVP of this ep, from her high-handed take over of that campaign,to her stare-down of Papa Pope to her fantastic power play in the end. I loved it. I think the angry fans complaining about what a wreck Olivia was last season was heard. Thank goodness. - I remember back in my Olitz days day I loved Tom. So during his speech I had that Tyra Banks scene 'We were all rooting for you!' playing in my head. I actually thought that was great scene b/t him and Liv and I thought the speech was pretty damned interesting. It gave an interesting insight to the man. - I am not a Mellie stan, so her limited scenes were just right for me. - Say what you will about Fitz, Tony Goldwyn has a voice that is made for phone sex. It is a great phone sex voice. - The most uncomfortable scene for me in the whole show was Javi looking for Huck. We know he was his dad, but I just wanted to grab him and tell him to go home and not meet strangers he met online. Of course, like Liv, Javi played us all. - I never thought I'd ever say this, but I am enjoying Quinn. - David and Liv's phone conversation was comedy gold. 'I've been Poped!' - I hope OPA recruits a new member. Liv needs more people. Edited November 7, 2014 by DearEvette 5 Link to comment

marceline November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 I actually liked this episode. I haven't had this feeling in ages. The Good. It was great to see Original Recipe Olivia back in the house. Just about everything she did in this episode took me back to S1: the way she swooped in on the flailing campaign, the way she handled Tom but especially the way she was actually there for Abby. It's been a long time since I felt like Liv actually cared for her gladiators so watching her step up for Abby - really, truly step up - and be there for her was wonderful. Scandal's become the show I have on while I do other things but that scene made me stop doing my bill paying and focus. The Bad: Enough with Rowan's speeches. We don't need them anymore. I have absolutely no idea what is going on with that other case. The Ugly: I FFed the phone sex only to read about bits of it here. I keep thinking about when TG said that his kids text him after love scenes. I can only imagine what they said to him after that stuff. Obviously "there's hope" is about to become the new "jam in Vermont." 5 Link to comment

gazebo November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 My God! I love, love, LOVE take charge Olivia Pope! I love the way how she just marched into the campaign headquarters of Susan what'shername and took charge of the place! It was breathtakingly awesome! I love this Oliva Pope! I want more of this Olivia Pope! I think Olivia knew all along that it was her father who killed the President's son. I think Tom's reaction to her made her realize that. Tom was so controlled by "Command" that he thought everyone else must be too. I think that's when Olivia knew that Tom was acting under Rowan's order to kill the poor kid. I don't think I've ever heard Tom talk so much before in this show. He captured that certain rhythm in his voice, speech that Olivia and Rowan has. When Olivia said to him "Watch your back!" before she ran out of the office, I knew Tom was going to get shanked. How cool was that, that Olivia ordered the "hit" on Tom in order to get Tom to really confess???? Awesome! Fitz and Olivia's phone sex made me laugh. I wasn't turned on, but it sure made me smile. I wish Abby could've shot the sonofabitch ex-husband! Mellie seems to be making a big grab for power. Fitz better get his brains out of his pants fast and realize that the First Lady wants to overthrow him and become president herself. Yay Mellie! Rowan's got to go. He really has to go. This man is too evil, too manipulative and he thinks he's a god or something. He's gotta be killed, or arrested and thown in jail for the rest of his life. He's really got to go. Kudos for Joe Morton! I hope he wins some sort of award for his portrayal of Rowan. 4 Link to comment
Spartan Girl November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 Cyrus laughing at the video made this episode for me. Good to see Old Mellie/Real Mellie back. I freaking loved her smackdown to Fitz, who continues to be nothing more than a piece of shit. Perhaps Olivia should take a good long look at Abby's ex because if she doesn't break things off with Fitz, that already toxic relationship might go there. True, Fitz hasn't actually laid a hand on her, but that doesn't mean he isn't abusive in other ways. "Old Mellie is back and you remember how much you hated her." I think Fitz might have been better off with Smelly Mellie. Mellie was essentially right. She fell down for three months and no one was there to help her. She has been holding things together for Fitz for their entire marriage. THIS. If Fitz were half the family man he claims to be, he would have actually tried to man up and support Mellie and Karen instead of attempt suicide and whine over his mistress's absence. Instead, Mellie has to be the one to carry his spoiled, sack-sack loser ass. 3 Link to comment
marceline November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) How cool was that, that Olivia ordered the "hit" on Tom in order to get Tom to really confess???? Awesome! It was cool but part of me thought that the guy doing the stabbing overdid it a bit. I was surprised that Tom was still alive after getting shanked four or five times. Tom could've bled out in his cell and Liv wouldn't have gotten the info she needed. Also, Liv needs to hire Huck's son. He managed to track the IP address of a computer to OPA, then he somehow managed to get there and up into the offices unaccompanied and unobserved. At this rate Javi should probably apply for Tom's old gig on the Secret Service because the boy has got mad skills! If Fitz were half the family man he claims to be, he would have actually tried to man up and support Mellie and Karen instead of attempt suicide and whine over his mistress's absence. What I hate is that his deep despair was obviously more about losing Liv than the death of his son. Mellie laid on her son's grave for two months but Fitz went to Liv's apartment to cry. Jade Foxx November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 (edited) I never liked Olitz, but I think they have run their course as a couple. I agree with SallyAlbright that the phone sex was creepy. There is nothing fresh or exciting between them. That phone sex talk wasn't even hot. Bleck. Gross. The scene didn't work for me, especially with Liv looking like she was in pain, and in full quiver face, on the other end. Rowan needs to be taken down, but I am not for any team that Fitz is on. If its Fitz versus Rowan, I pick Rowan. Agreed. I'm in the minority, but I like the idea of a black man secretly being the Ruler of the Universe. And Joe Morton can do no wrong, I've been rooting for him since Brother From Another Planet! Tom's speech, Helen of Troy - UGH. Cannot wait wait wait to see what Cy does with the new info on RentBoi. I truly expected Cy to snap his neck the minute RentBoi slithered back in bed! Edited November 7, 2014 by Jade Foxx 3 Link to comment
ChicksDigScars November 7, 2014 Share November 7, 2014 While Rowan was pontificating, backlit dramatically, this word came to my mind: "Bloviating." Since I didn't know that word, I looked it up today: bloviate %u02C8bl%u014Dv%u0113%u02CC%u0101t/ verbUSinformal gerund or present participle: bloviating talk at length, especially in an inflated or empty way Yep. One of my favorite words, which I have also been using to describe Joe Morton's scenery chewing weekly monologues. It just fits him, doesn't it? Except that it must not be a commonly used word, because I keep getting the squiggly line of misspellage every time I type it out. Fitz phone sex? My eyes rolled so far into the back of my head, I could read my shirt label. That's sexy? Whatever. Are they letting Goldwyn's agent write his lines for him, now? He's too much of a douche for me every to think of him as sexy again. 2 Link to comment
