King Protea from South Africa.  gorgeous flower but odd looking in a bouquet

Oh wow, you really know flowers. I'll bet the bouquet looked better in person. I wished she had carried it walking down the isle after they were married.

My favorite part of this show is the wedding dresses and the bouquets!

I've only watched the matching episode so far, so I'm behind. I do like Bao and Johnny individually, so I hope they don't let me down.

Jose is pinging something, and it seems like a few others here might've picked up on it as well.

It was definitely winter time, since when Ryan had his house visit, he had a Christmas tree up.

Also, I will give MAFS small props for matching Johnny and Bao's ethnic backgrounds.  I could imagine what would have happened had the show matched a Vietnamese person with a Chinese, Japanese, or Thai person thinking all Asians are alike...

Did I miss something? Did either one or both of them request a spouse of Vietnamese background?

It wasn't specifically stated on the show, but how else could MAFS have matched them? They didn't match them with a spouse that wasn't Asian.

Okay, my gaydar is really, really bad so would some of you please message me? I suspected one person in particular, but now I'm thinking there may be more.

Thanks in advance.

I don't remember Johnny.  Bao said caucasian or asian, but no one she already knew from "the community" which I took to mean the asian community.

Me too. I didn’t watch the matching shows but I assumed they both requested an Asian spouse. They both seem like their culture is very important to them.

Yes, and the fact that they both requested traditional tea services was really nice. I was wondering where we would see those gorgeous red outfits, since that is not what they wore to their wedding. I like them so far. She is gorgeous, but may be pretty rigid in her expectations. He seems like he might be fun. I hope they make it work. I just have a feeling they will be the only ones.

They put on the screen Jose's job title at NASA, but I can't remember what it was.  Sounded kind of impressive, like having to do with mission control.

Did they say what they all did for a living? Gil is a firefighter and Michaela is a realtor, but I don't think I know about the rest of them. Bao said something about working with cancer researchers.

I think that's due to COVID. I think there were more masks this episode than in all of the New Orleans season.

Jose is a "flight mission specialist" with NASA.

OK, I just finished watching the episode, and I think Bao and Johnny are freaking adorable together. I also have a feeling that both sets of parents are relieved that their in-laws are somewhat of a known quantity. I really hope these two make it because I'm not getting the best vibes from the other couples-to-be. If they stay together they will have some adorable (and probably genius) babies.

Also, what was up with Dr. Viviana's Pocahontas cosplay in her talking heads?

And, yes, why was Rachel's friend such a beyotch? Way to boost her confidence. I think Rachel's very attractive, and probably one of the most appealing people this season so I don't why her friend was being such a Negative Nancy.

Maybe next week? I'd love to see it! There was a little clip of it where he said he requested "burgundy and rose gold" and he is wearing apple red and gold, so I think we maybe will see at least a little of it.

Since they went to 5 couples, they've drug out the pre-wedding stuff for at least 2 hours on 2 nights with the respective pre-wedding stuff for the couples shown getting married that night. This season is off to an awful start with the 2-3 hours already spent on the matching and couple info last week. Then rehashing couple info tonight with the pre-wedding stuff. I haven't looked to see how many hours the show is next week......

I think they could have done some of the pre-wedding stuff and all the weddings tonight in 3 hours. That's another reason I record the show so I can FF.

[eta: Just looked back at things I deleted on the DVR - 2 hours matchmaking special 2 weeks ago and 3 hours last week on couple info with the commentary and previous participants. So 8 hours in and we've had 1, one, uno, single, solitary, lone wedding. Lord help us all!]

Agreed. This was just way too long. Three hours, plus Unfiltered, and then some Couples Cam all wore me out.

Also, Unfiltered seemed oddly placed this season. Having three grooms on to comment, but only Johnny had met and married his wife yet by the end of the episode.

I like Bao but she should really apologize to sports fans. My husband is a giant Steelers fan and he graduated from Johns Hopkins with many merit-based scholarships. He is also in cancer research.

How would Bao like it if someone judged her because her University is not considered prestigious by others? She would think those people are ignorant as Hell.

I think she was afraid he was introducing her to all of his likes.  I'd be scared, too.

Johnny, his card, and his wedding gifts were adorable. Hopefully Bao will grow to appreciate him and won't steal his joy.

A lot can happen in ten years. But, I'd be more confident that the guy is who he shows up as while being filmed if I knew him back in the day, or knew people who know/knew him as opposed to if he was just some random dude the show recruited from IG or wherever.

I thought the bouquet was ugly and it was just so disproportionate the Bao’a size.  It was overwhelming her.  Seems like both of them are OCD so I think their biggest fights will be about how to fold the towels and color code the linen closet.   I think Bao looked very disappointed at the altar.  I knew she was going to know him as they kept bringing that up beforehand.  And I don’t think a list of 30 people she did not want to be matched with is very long.  I would have 30 people just from work alone that I would have no desire to marry.  They seemed to get along well after the ceremony but I feel like her knowing him ahead of time is going to affect their marriage.

I like Brett a lot but there was some mention of him dating “model types” so I wonder if he will be disappointed in Brett.  She has a gorgeous body and a great personality. I was surprised she was so reserved at the bachelorette party as she seems really fun but then I read that she is a teacher so she may not have wanted to appear at all wild while on camera.

Myrna is a total buzz kill.  Sounds like she is wild in the bedroom (or at least thinks she is) but is a real drag in real life. Why would they ever pair her with someone who loves to have fun and  does not make a lot of money? Seems like all they have in common is that they both want a lot of sex. She and Carlos would have been an interesting match with all of his extreme budgeting.  Wonder if she is in a lit of debt.

The girl with Carlos seems really sweet but based on her friend’s comments, I think he is going to be unattracted to her at the altar and that’s going to be their issue for the season.

I think Mickaela looks like 2 completely different people depending on how she wears her hair.  It seems like it changes the whole look of her face.

Hubby and I found this whole story-line interesting.  We had known each other for 10 years before we started dating.  I was dating the father of one of his friend's gf then wife.  (Yeah, much older guy).  My now-hubby and I were even in their wedding together back then.  It wasn't until we were both single those 10 years later that she set us up on a semi-blind date.  We will have been married 28 years this weekend.

Hubby often says he wishes we had gotten together when we first met.  I tell him it wouldn't have worked, we needed those years to grow into people who would appreciate each other.

I thought Boa and Johnny were really cute at the altar.  Neither seemed upset, they both seemed pleased.  I wonder if there had been some crushing going on those 10 years ago.

Thought Viv was on her was on her way to Jake’s neon toga party but I can see the Pocahontas look.

Johnny must have had his heart string plucked when Bao said “I insisted on the tea ceremony” when he asked if she would do it for his family.

Hope they show the tea ceremony for a peek into the Viet culture

Betcha Bao’s and Johnny’s is the happiest reception in MAFS history for the families and friends for the fortuitous match.

This was their destiny... to paraphrase Forest Forest Gump.

Holy Hell. I know it's super mean, but you are 100% correct. Isn't there anybody on the set of that show to help dress her? If there isn't, there needs to be. You gotta know this show is making Lifetime serious bank judging by the fact that it is on 24/7. They can afford to dress her better! At the very least, why couldn't a producer say "Hey Jamie, uncross your legs and sit Kate Middleton Princess style - it doesn't look great from this angle".  The whole look was tragic. How hard is it to pick clothes (and shoes) that fit and cover the bits???

That bouquet was way. way too big for Bao. It completely overwhelmed her, though it would have been better had she held it down at waist level.  I'm not sure why brides hold them up so high and hide the front of their dresses. Bao was stunning though... just perfect.  That sparkly cape was gorgeous.  She and Johnny did seem to relax when they realized they knew each other. I have hope for this couple!

But I guess we're all wrong because Bao thinks sports fans are the opposite of "intellects."

I think it depends on the level of sports fan-ness.  If I were matched with someone who attends every game shirtless and with a painted face, without knowing more, I'd assume we wouldn't be a good match.  And to be honest, part of it would be that this activity doesn't generally ping my radar for great intellect.  And if I were finding this out right before I was to be married to this person about whom I know nothing else, it might precipitate a general nervousness meltdown I was otherwise holding at bay.

Having a wedding gift presented to me wrapped in football jerseys wouldn't read "casual fan" to me, and obviously didn't to Bao.  I'd be fine with a casual fan, but I definitely wouldn't want to be a football widow, or deal with issues presented if the fandom is accompanied by gambling.

I'm sure it happens all the time.  It happened in this thread!  And, really, the judgers aren't wrong.  They might not be taking into account the reasons she had for attending a less prestigious university, and they should be if they're judging her based on the university she chose to attend, but facts are facts.

22 hours ago, Auntie Anxiety said:

If I had to bet, I’d say that Bao probably got a full scholarship from U of H. With a background like hers, wasting big bucks to go to a higher status university wouldn’t make any sense.

UT is a higher status university and it's no more expensive than U of H, and maybe a little bit cheaper on tuition.  But if she could live at home while attending U of H, it would be cheaper.

And it could be that she couldn't get into UT.  I went to UT as a freshman back in the days when, as Mimi Schwartz reminisced in Texas Monthly, the biggest hurdle to going to UT Austin was finding a stamp to put on the application.  Things have changed dramatically in the intervening decades, and the admissions process is very numbers driven, with the result that some very qualified people don't get in.  It actually boggles my mind.

That makes me dislike him intensely.  It's one thing to enter into a marriage arranged by these "experts," but all of that can be undone if necessary, with just some embarrassment and maybe some good stories.  A baby can't be undone and definitely never agreed to be part of the experiment.

I didn't see the whole show and only caught the end with Bao's and Johnny's wedding, but I read that the reasons for the jerseys (like I said, I don't know if this was mentioned) was that he had one Home jersey and it held something, I think a frame?, for their home and the other jersey was an Away jersey and that held something they could use when they weren't home. Of course, if she wasn't a sports fan, she might not even know that there are different uniforms, but I thought that was really creative.

After the explanation, I think his gift was awesome and witty, however I didn’t get his idea of the home vs away jerseys either until he explained it to us. I just hope Bao will be able to keep his great smile.

Zack is so young and sensitive. He needs a very different woman next to him.

Ryan - there Is no way he was a serial dater. He is a very average looking and so far boring…I will give him a couple of more episodes to redeem himself and show us how charming his personality is, and if not, he lied to make himself sounds more interesting.

Ryan acts like his pickup truck broke down, his dog died and his Momma went to prison....

This is the song Ryan plays on the jukebox as he cries into his beer....

Listen to the whole song...the payoff is in the last verse.

To be honest Ryan looks exactly like a 35 year old "oil man" you would meet at the Friday night Happy Hour at the Holiday Inn in Galveston...

What would be a surprise is that he isn't a sad divorced dad, even though he looks like one....

Ryan and Brett will get along fine if he embraces being Coach Brett's husband...the kids will love him riding around the  track with his doggie Hype waiting for his wife to finish practice.

He will be buoyed by their acceptance of him and their energy...

What is the definition of a serial dater? Why do you have to be good looking to be a serial dater? I think a serial dater is someone who dates a lot in their search to find their mate and I don't see any problem in it. They made it a negative two seasons ago.  But if you're really trying to find a mate you do need to serial date.  you don't need to date long-term with people that you don't have a long-term possibilities with.

I agree with everyone who is concerned that Jose will not do wonders for Rachel's already low self-esteem.  I just wanted to point out that if he criticizes her skin, it will be a case of people in glass houses throwing stones.

Also wanted to add--Johnny's comment about Ryan as a "weary traveler" was revealing in many ways, most importantly to me it showed that he actually noticed other people and cared enough about them to think about what they might be feeling.  The fact that his family in their speech about him to Bao emphasized his empathy and willingness to support her even when they didn't agree was another excellent sign.

Ah, the good old days when being in the top 10% of your senior class got you in UT-Austin no matter your SAT scores.....

Hook 'em.

I agree with everyone who is concerned that Jose will not do wonders for Rachel's already low self-esteem.  I just wanted to point out that if he criticizes her skin, it will be a case of people in glass houses throwing stones.

Note to self: Start collecting stones to chuck at Jose's glass house....

Longhorn for life!

Bao got her MBA at U of H, at the Bauer School of Business, which is very highly respected in H-town.  She's been at MD Anderson almost her entire career, having risen in several positions.  She has an extremely impressive list of philanthropic positions, so it was no surprise to me that she was President of the Vietnamese Students Association.

They are my favorite couple, and I loved their discussion of tea service.  I hope we can see it!
