RE: The Crackpot discussion and phones. FWIW, My brother works for a relatively large law firm in Manhattan, and they *just* upgraded to Windows phones after years of Blackberrys, so maybe outdated tech even for fancy lawyers isn't so ridiculous?

 

 

Yep we have a lawyer at our firm who has a plug in that allows him to use Word Perfect. It might as well be DOS. Lord.

 

I was coming to say the same thing! My firm just upgraded to Windows 7 and everyone's firm supplied phones are all still Blackberrys or iPhone 4Ss... some people personally upgrade to newer phones, but in generally it's all pretty outdated tech.

Sarah: Oleanna Tyrell: The Queen of Thorns.   Just as faaaaaaabulous as Dame Diana Rigg (albeit much younger, of course).  A smart operator who knows her way around a good head scarf.  Speaks her mind without foofy euphemisms and is absolutely NOT going to put up with anyone's shit. 

 

Tara:  Stannis Baratheon (hear me out!).   Notorious rules aficionado. Sure his smuggler pal Davos saved everyone from starvation, but he *BROKE THE LAW*, so off with his fingers!  Competitive and will do anything to win (*cough* Melisandre). Not overly fond of the concept of having offspring.  

 

Dave: Hot Pie.  A man of simple pleasures who knows what he wants out of life--hot pie and the promise of more hot pie to come.    A baker, not a fighter.  A creator, not a destroyer. 

 

Gordon:  Drogon the dragon.   Large and not always easily restrained.  That being said, I'm not ruling out the possibility that Gordon is really Littlefinger: seemingly fairly harmless, but secretly pulling all the strings behind the scenes. 

 

Joe Reid:  Renly Baratheon.  A gentleman who likes gentlemen and loves a good celebration even more.  Always ready with a quip and (I assume, in Joe's case) really knows how to rock an antler crown.

In my defence, there just aren't many lighthearted characters on GoT.

On further thought, Bronn wouldn't be a bad match. He's good for a joke, doesn't get too emotionally invested in anyone else's drama and gets his shit done.

My choice/s for crossover buddies would be Everett Backstrom and Barry Allen, aka The Flash.

 

Similarities: Both have their names in the title of their show (Backstrom and The Flash) . Both are in law enforcement. Both have lost their mother. Both have had relationship difficulties.

Differences: Backstrom, while a brilliant detective, is pretty un-PC all around. Plus he's blunt and indulges his vices on the reg.  Barry, while not a goody-two-shoes, is still pretty nice and polite. Barry goes out of his way to help people.  Backstrom can clock a scene and if not come away with a scenario, can narrow a search. Barry, even with super-speed and working as a CSI, refuses to "precheck" a scene or meeting area- as another superhero has suggested- and often gets blindsided/ gets his detective father figure into peril due to this lack of foresight.

 

Backstrom could help Barry tweak his detective work while Barry can earn his sympathy for being unable to get drunk.  Also, Barry might be able to...remind Backstrom that you can hold the universe in wonder even if you tend to see the crap?  ::shrugs::

Tara's suggestion of a Next Gen thirtysomething, with Janey as the main character, reminded me of that time Mel Harris (who played Hope, Janey's mother) turned up on Dawson's Creek as Jen Lindley's mother. I remember thinking at the time that with a mother like Hope, Janey could well have turned into 'bad girl' Jen Lindley. Hee.

I was overjoyed to hear a new edition of Kim's Most Awesome Thing I Saw on TV Last Week. When she was doing recaps for Real World (it WAS the Las Vegas season, btw) I didn't even watch that show, but i would read the full recap every week, JUST to get to read Kim's Most Awesome Thing. (well, that and her hilariously scathing descriptions of the idiots on that show). Every time she comes on EHG, I think, "aww, I miss the most awesome thing. Maybe she'll do one on the podcast" and then she DID! Every time, please. :)

Chiming in to add to the Nonac love. It's always great to hear you all talk about the things you like on tv, but I am equally happy to listen to an enthusiastic pile-on for the stuff you think is craptastic. The "oh, and ANOTHER thing" discussions are always really fun.

Plus the theme music is just the best. The pauses between the musical phrases always make my stomach clench because I'm tricked into thinking the piece is over, but then there's more and I am overjoyed. Works for me every time. I'll never get tired of Dave's anguished howl of laughter he can't contain, Tara's "is he really broken forever this time?" nervous giggle, Mark's delighted cackle, and Sarah's breathless "oh, jesus" at the end. I just listened to it again. So much joy.

Mark Blankenship, you channeled my own inner rage against Downton Abbey with that Nonac. Is there NO ONE with the power to give Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West Stafford, ANY notes? ANY critical feedback? Something along the lines of, My Dear Lord Fellowes, mightst thou knock it the Fuck Off and get some other writers in here, pronto. I think back in an earlier EHG, either Mark I or current, Dave remarked about the plot loops of this show (and has since pointed it out in other shows): everything returns to status quo. Characters get one plot and must endlessly repeat it. Mary Is A Whore, Edith Is Denied Happiness And Is Hopeless, Mistah Baaaetes Suffers Nobly In Silence. GAAAHD.

HOW many years have passed now? Are they all trapped under a dome in which time doesn't matter? I wish that some bright person would have suggested at the start that each season cover one year, starting in 1912. (An exception would be made to get WWI over and done with in one season, as they did -- just later, and make it have more consequences.)

And lastly, I am not a crackpot, but I wish they would have bucked convention and just recast Dan Stevens when he left. Do the old soap-style "Unwrap the bandages and he's got a new face!" routine. He was fine but let's face it, not the best actor in the entire world. Get into the Mary-Matthew marriage a bit, and give some of the suitor plot lines to Edith, for pete's sake. But mostly, get some writers in there who know how to move things along.

And PS glad the game went well. Smart to leave out the hints, your instinct was right. There are some stroooonnnng feelings on IMDb.

So nice to know you all appreciate Deutschland 83 as much as I do.  I stumbled upon it one day flipping channels and caught up on it on "On Demand".  It does remind me of spy thrillers of the '70s and '80s.  For some reason it reminds me of a Masterpiece Theater miniseries called "Danger UXB".  I have to admit that in 1983 I was around Martin's age but not very aware of world events at the time, so I'm learning history from this show as well as being entertained.  I love how they don't overdo everything like on American TV. Not everyone is beautiful with perfect teeth and wardrobes, and sometimes real life is not that epic, but subtle.  Plus I really appreciate the attention paid to wardrobe, hair and makeup.  I hate historical shows that don't make enough effort to stick to the period.

 

Last year out of the blue I developed an interest in World War II, which my 88 year old father is somewhat of an expert on, and spent the better part of the last year recording and watching repeats of every TV documentary ever made on the subject, so this show was right in line with that interest.  My father has always had a fascination with Germany and its history, having grown up with German friends.  He even speaks fluent German.  Growing up I went to every Steuben Day parade, ate German food and listened to German music.  I always chalked it up to a quirk of my father since the amount of German he has in him is kind of small.  I suppose it runs in the family and at my late age I've developed a bit of a fascination for it myself.  It started last year when I bought a Volkswagen, and it has lead me all the way to this show.  Now hubbie and I want to learn German!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this episode. I mean, as a regular listener, I'm pretty much in the bag for whatever, but I thought grouping the shows into Jack, Queen, and King was a great approach. It was a nice format change, but still very informative about the shows covered.

If you enjoy crazy-accented Mark (as I do) I suggest going back to the first go-round of EHG and listening to the episode where they discuss Joyful Noise. There's a lot of hilarious Dolly Parton impersonations in that one. And, that's the episode where we hear Mark's Rosanne story! If there were a EHG canon of EHG episodes, that'd make the list for sure.

I am not a crackpot. Having an addiction is not a substatute for character development! I am so sick of writers trying to give a character some depth without having to actually write an interesting character so they make them an alcoholic or something. Not all addicts are deep or even interesting. I especially hate it when someone magically develops a substance abuse problem because the show ran out of story lines. Just because Hollywood writers know people in AA doesn't automatically make it a good storyline. I am not a crackpot!
