The Masked Singer

The one thing this show has reinforced for me is that relatively few singers have voices distinctive enough that there would be zero doubt as to who is singing. I'm better at recognizing a song I've never heard before as being by a particular band, as opposed to just the singer, but that's because I can hear both the vocals and the playing style of the band as a whole. With this group, nobody jumps out at me as being 100% identifiable by just one song, and that's probably by design. That is, even though he would never agree to something like this, Bob Dylan would be immediately identified, whereas with some of the singers here, they have a generically good voice, sometimes enough to narrow it down to a few possibilities, but for me at least, they don't give themselves away by their singing voice. I agree that Donny Osmond is probably the peacock, but that's based more on clues than his voice. I have no idea on the people who are not professional singers, other than guesses that people have posted online.

I was going to say Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera.

But then I remember Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato can almost match those singers identically. Not to mention the Lion (Rumer) herself sounded like Aguilera (and had her strut) in episode 1.

New Clues up:

Unicorn:  Graduated class of 1993  (Tori Spelling-90201 graduation year?)

Lion:  Her voice will take you hostage

Alien:  She's a whiz at interplanetary travel (LaToya moved with Michael to NYC when he was performing in the Wiz?)

Rabbit:  He'll play a game for you if the price is right (Joey was a guest host of the Price is Right.)

Oddly enough, there is no clue for the monster.

In the video clues, rabbit's foot is on a basketball, unicorn is opening a book, alien is looking at a crystal ball and lion is building something?  Monster is missing from this as well.

They changed the groups. The Unicorn and Lion are from group 1 and the Rabbit and Alien are from group 2. Next week should the Peacock, Monster, Bee and Raven.

I wish there was more doubt about who some of the masked singers are.   I know they're trying to balance the clues vs keeping the identities secret, but knowing (more or less) who everyone is has taken away some of my interest.  At least Joey's denial kept it interesting for awhile.

I feel the same way. If the show comes back I’d think it be better if there were fewer clues each week.

Good catch.  I didn't notice that.

Let me guess...they did this to save the unicorn.   Now presumably the bottom 2 are the alien and the unicorn.

Next week the monster is probably a goner.

It seems pretty arbitrary who goes home and who doesn't.  Yes they say it's the audience vote, but who really knows.   And then part of the contestant's longevity is tied to which group they are in.   I like the show, but it's got a lot of potential for improvement, if it comes back.

It definitely seems like the eliminations a predetermined.

Next week should be interesting with three professional singers up against Ricki Lake.

Awww no more Joel McHale? He should be the host instead of Nick Cannon if the show comes back for Season 2.  Nick Cannon sucks I think Zoltar wants his turban back.

With the change in groupings (and I’m sure it will change in two weeks and they will all be combined) it seems to me that the elimination order could be Alien, Monster, Unicorn, Raven, Rabbit, Lion.

Peacock vs Bee for the winner and if this was a fan vote I would call in 200 times for the legendary Gladys Knight.

No, because he was the guest panelist for a couple of episodes.

Oh, now I understand better how the voting works. "We're possibly going to have some group numbers down the road, so the ones we're going to eliminate first will be those least able to do well in a song/dance number."

Got it.

I heard about this show so I decided to watch. Much to my surprise, I totally loved it and I hate all those competitive shows. I even found the judges funny and entertaining, especially Ken Jeong with his fake outrage. Although I was with him about the security guards for the scrunchie and that it was not even a little helpful. I couldn't figure out from scratch who the masked singers are, but I think the guesses that I read here are likely correct, especially Rumer Willis. I watch Empire. She was on and has an amazing voice. I heard her when the lion sang. I also think that the LaToya Jackson guess is correct. Congrats to those who got Tori Spelling right.

Tori Spelling deserved to go home.  I was afraid the Alien would get the boot so was pleasantly surprised.  Tori can’t sing at all.  She didn’t have a solo during the group number.  And her song, she was drowned out by the backing track / backup singers to the point where I wasn’t even sure if she was actually singing.  Also, she looks way different than her Donna Martin days.  Did she have plastic surgery?  Her eyes look so pinched.

Alien is clearly LaToya.  She was on some reality show where celebrities trained to be reserve police officers of Muncie Indiana.  So she did “protect and serve”.   I loved Alien’s performance tonight, she showed she could actually somewhat sing.

I feel like Margaret Cho's singing voice has been glossed over by Ken not knowing his own on-screen sister. She is wonderful.

Tori is gone. I hope it's Lion v Bee at the end. Can't wait to see Joey be revealed, my love for NSYNC has grown even more during this journey because I always loved his stage presence.

LaToya absolutely threw Nicole Richie hints to confuse us. Muncie Indiana Police Department is on LaToya's wikipedia.

Um, yes. Almost every portion of her face has been altered. A bad nose job got fixed and she couldn't stop there. But also she had 4 (or 5) kids super close together, so her face is a bit more round. I find that my puffier face years make for smaller smile eyes.

There is some justice - I thought we'd be stuck with Tori, uh Unicorn, for a couple more weeks.  Next week, I'd take a guess that Raven will get the boot.  I still think that Peacock & Bee are the strongest singers.  Rabbit is good and entertaining so he'll be in the running.  Lion is ok but I find her singing very mannered.  Alien cant compare to those 4, neither can Raven.  Monster is still kind of a cipher right now.  Who am I forgetting?

They really gave away too many clues in the early episodes. I’m still enjoying it but it isn’t as much fun now that I know who everyone is.

It might just be a problem with the format. The professional singers are the ones most likely to make it to the end and are also the ones most likely to recognized without the clues.  Once you combine a famous singing voice with the clues it becomes obvious after two or three performances.

Yeah it's definitely a neat concept but it could use tweaking for season 2.   More singers, more clues not done by the singers...less judges or less shown interjected comments like "You go girl!" "That's a professional singer!"  "That's not a professional singer!" "Is she a professional singer?"

The Muncie Indiana badge completely gave away LaToya, but the judges seemed to only react to Indiana (Gary IN where the Jacksons are from.) I was briefly thinking it might be Paris Jackson, but it's totes LaToya.

Glad Ken got one right!

I came here checking to see if anyone else remembered that cop reality show LaToya was on.  It's amazing that the same "celebs" have been appearing on these types of reality shows for nearly the past 20 years.

I'm a horrible guesser, I'm not even going to attempt it anymore.

First episode that I've seen but Lion was Miley Cyrus... I'd recognize that goat throat anywhere.  She sounded good but that vibrato is distinctive.

Eta... after catching up on the last several pages, Miley seems too big to be on this show but it really sounds exactly like her.

I was thinking the same thing.  I enjoyed the first few weeks.  And I guessed Raven and Bee after their first clue packages and songs. I still watch, but I'm a little disappointed that everyone has figured out the singers.   I wonder how they will keep the secrets in season 2.  How do they keep that live audience from spilling the beans?  Also the clues and voice masking have to make it more difficult to guess.

Joey Fatone - Born in Brooklyn (Brooklyn piza sign), dabbles in magic as a hobby, sang the SSB for the Orlando Magic. Totally the rabbit.

LaToya Jackson -  Her Muncie PD badge is current, she still volunteers as a deputy. Definitely the alien.

So glad Tori went home.  She didn't really sing and I was getting tired of hearing the same whiny "I'm so insecure" speech over and over and over...ugh.  And yes, she is tone deaf.

Yes. Her poor little rich girl act just made me roll my eyes through her entire video. She’s so insecure that she has done multiple reality shows.

This show needs celebrities that can laugh at themselves.

I recently rewatched the Bee’s first performance and it is hilarious to see the judges unknowingly critique a legend.

Forget the judges reactions I want to see the other celebrities reactions. Can you imagine Margaret Cho discovering she went head to head again Gladys Knight?

And.....the body figure from the first episode on the Unicorn and the body figure tonight is 100% different.

Agree. I didn't think it could be Tori Spelling because she's thick through the waist and Unicorn had a somewhat small waist the first week. I'm pretty sure the next week she was wider across so I was on board with that one. Merely an observation not a criticism. Needed to go home, can't really sing. Knew that was Aaron Spelling's typewriter (the right vintage for him) immediately.

Only one I guessed from the get-go was Margaret Cho, so I beat Ken on that one. According to the interview, he was also her opening act on her tours! Talk about clueless. Although he did get Tori.

I really hope for season 2, they use this as the first criterion, followed by questions like "are you vaccinated?" and "are you Joel McHale, now that we have enough established ratings to justify your salary for an entire run?"

If they can get more celebrities to participate then it would be a fun format to have 5 singers and you vote for who you liked the best and the top 2 stay and the rest are revealed.  Gives just enough time for guessing during the week but also enough interest in the reveals of what are probably more of the trainwreck amateur singers which would be fun.   You'd be more likely to participate (as a non singer) if you knew you were up there with a bunch of other karaoke shower singing specialists!   Plus you would most likely be one and out, which would be tolerable as well.

Probably have to scale back on the costumes a bit to accommodate more singers per episode.  Unless we are taking prop bets on if the unicorn/alien/lion mask wearer keeps getting eliminated.

I remember! Armed and Famous - Jack Osbourne was on it (he also still goes back to Muncie as well,) and Erik Estrada. I have a faint memory of LaToya tasing Erik and giggling madly about it, but maybe I made that up.

Rumer Willis is apparently denying she is Lion, so it could be Scout (but Empire clues!)

I'm going to give her somewhat of a pass here: aside the fact that her face is a lot different than it was 20 years ago (hey the same can be same about McCarthy), she has put on weight over the years which would make a lot of people insecure.  Hell her kids are now being body shamed in some capacity https://people.com/health/tori-spelling-dean-mcdermott-body-shaming-kids/ .

We never really discuss the ratings here, but they seem to be really good because it's been renewed for a second season.

Now that Fox will evolve into "New Fox" once the Disney deal is done, they need to have unscripted shows that can maintain decent numbers while they figure out what to do with their scripted series come next season.  From the stats I've seeing, it's doing good enough to get the renewal.

Also, shut up Jenny.

Of course Rumer is denying it.  Joey Fatone has denied he is the Rabbit as well.  If they haven't been revealed yet, they likely contractually have to deny that they were on the show. I wouldn't take anyone's denial of being on the show as proof they are not on it.

As I said before, I think she seems like a nice person and good for her that she got to live out her dream.  However, I have to agree that I was tired of her "poor little rich girl" act, and that we had to always hear about how no one believed in her, and to have the judges constantly prop her up.  Let's see... she is the daughter of a TV scion.  She grew up insanely wealthy in Beverly Hills.  Her father pretty much bought her an acting career.  And she feels insecure because people kept telling her that she couldn't sing?  Pffftttt.

Sorry Tori... but YOU CAN'T SING.  She was saying that people were saying she is tone deaf, and in my opinion, those people are correct.  But it pains her that people are denying her dream?  Oh well.  That's life.  Not everything can be bought with money.  She still has lots of money, a nice career, multiple TV shows over the years, a nice life, a husband that loves her, four or five children... all things that most people would be very happy with.  My dream was to play in the NHL.  People said I wasn't good enough.  And you know what?  I wasn't.  I didn't let it define me.  I accepted it and moved on.  I certainly don't walk around every day feeling insecure because I wasn't good enough for the NHL.  I found my own path.

Life is about being happy with who you are and what you have.  Certainly one should always strive to improve and be the best version of who they are.  But I just have a hard time feeling sorry for her just because people told her she can't sing.  And that's how she presented her "insecurity"... it wasn't about people saying she's fat, as suggested upthread.  It was about being told she couldn't sing and wasn't good enough.

I'm not sure if all this insecurity is what caused her to overdo the plastic surgery, but she should have left well enough alone.  She is unrecognisable.  I wouldn't have been able to pick her out of a lineup.  Jenny McCarthy is 20 years older too but to me she is still instantly identifiable and she looks pretty much the same as she did back on "Singled Out".

Don't know why I still need to put my 2 cents in on Tori Spelling.  Maybe because I'm sick of her being a fame 'ho, and sick of her whining and airing her dirty family laundry out for all to see and read about.   She was not a beauty (and I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to me she was horse-faced and homely), yet had a plumb acting job on her Daddy's tv show.   A job many, many, aspiring actors would've given their eye teeth to get and yet, all these years later it's still "I'm so insecure" and my mommy and daddy did x, y, and z to me, and whine, whine, whine."  I knew it was Tori Spelling from her first appearance by the clues and just rolled my eyes.   The judges were way too kind - I think I would've said,  "Hon, go back to your crafty stuff and don't give up the day job".

Oh, is that what it was about?  Maybe I misinterpreted her comments and thought her "I'm very insecure" was just about her singing.  But is it because of her rich parents?  Like you said, she wasn't pretty and she landed a good role on her dad's show.  Maybe people criticised her back then for getting everything handed to her on a silver platter... she didn't have to work hard to get anything in life.  And people have always doubted her because of the perception that she owes everything to her rich daddy.

Well, if that's the case, then, yeah.  I do think there is the perception that she has a charmed life because of her dad.  I don't think that perception is inaccurate.  Anyone else remember her display of her gloriously bombastic acting talent in the much justifiably maligned "Mother May I Sleep With Danger"?  She had limited skills and has been gifted a golden spoon to make her way through life.  She should just count her blessings and stop whining so much.

Sorry.  She seems like a nice person but it's hard to relate to her "problems".  She should just take a cue from heiresses past and just appreciate what she has without caring so much about what the general public thinks.

On another note... It seems like the show is now trying to deliberately throw in red herrings?  This show was taped months ago so I'm not sure if or how they are seemingly responding to assertions that the clues were too easy.  The "Simple Life" and "That's Hot" references were clearly aimed at suggesting that she was Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie.

I'm sad that dwts isn't on this spring, but this has been my go to guilty pleasure :-) Tori Spelling couldn't sing at all. It was time for her to go. I guess she could be insecure because her dad didn't leave her any money. I guess that would hurt my feelings, too.

Ken Jeong is okay, but those other judges suck. Jenny McCarthy is so annoying. My teenage son took one look at her and said, "Isn't that the anti-vaxxer?" LOL

In our house we forget week to week what the previous clues were. This week we guessed Stephen "Twitch" Boss for the rabbit (last week we thought it was AJ from Backstreet Boys), LaToya Jackson for the alien (but wow, is she model skinny - you could see through her sideways), and Kesha for the Lion. We did guess Tori Spelling for the Unicorn. I wish there was a running rally of clues though, I think we need to write down each week who we think everyone is, because our collective memory fails.

I'm pretty sure it's one of NSYNC, although not sure which one.
