I didn't notice how she wrote it, but on https://www.jeopardy.com/

they list her name as Salom Gonstad.

She wrote it Salome with an accent mark over the "e" -- I never can remember how to do those!

Instaget FJ for me tonight.  Arlo does several of Woody's songs in concert (I've seen Arlo four times, I think?), with This Land Is Your Land as a singalong.  But that ruins the perfect zero I was working on for the week.  🙂

I also got the TS of Nikon, Centrum, and niacin.

Well, I guess I can stop saving the shows now.  I was hoping for another run (and Brendan might provide it, for all I know), but Emma won't be it.  Farewell, Library Girl!

Shocked as anything that the Mojave River was a TS.  And on a $400 clue, no less.

I got Woody Guthrie instantly and was proud of the show for not including the talented-but-IMO-not-legendary Arlo in the clue.  Which gave Emma the choice that upended her, as it turned out.  (Brendan had her beaten anyway, though.)

OTOH, I was pretty much useless in the "Bit of Lit" category.  Perhaps Brendan's big sister could give me a refresher course in reading?  Because, honestly, sheesh.

Alex said the A got her in trouble, which yes, but I don't think it should have been counted right with just Guthrie since there are two reasonable answers for that.

I guessed the Guthrie part right away, then I spent most of the rest of the time trying to remember which was the father and which was the son.

It’s not allowing me to quote, but I wanted to quote @Dobian above because I loved that Gordon Lightfoot album too and now listen to it on a CD. My favorite song on it is Don Quixote. Nice to see I’m not the only person who appreciates that album. Coincidentally he was also the first concert I ever saw. It was at a local community college outdoors. We took a blanket, sat and enjoyed.

I;ve seen him in concert several times and he's always great. I also have him as one of my Pandora channels.

I get a comma with alt+130. é is alt+0233 on my character map.

DAMN. She's gone before we found out what a user experience librarian is. I guess that's just something I'll have to go on living not knowing about. <big sigh>

Emma *might* have argued that "a" wasn't an initial, but an article. Who is a Guthrie, any Guthrie?

Google is my friend. Look, she can get a job in Boston, one of those O-vowel cities!  https://www.higheredjobs.com/admin/details.cfm?JobCode=176916390

Guthrie only would have elicited a BMS in the other 2 rounds, but I have no idea how it would be handled in FJ. I guess if the answer could possibly cover more than one person (Woody, Arlo, Kit), it makes sense to jot down a first name, or at least a first initial. I wonder if this is something that is told to players, or if the show figures the contestants should be able figure it out on their own. Were any of you players out there advised of this?

Emma's style reminds me of Rachel Maddow and I find that  a little endearing.

I think Emma looks like Rachel Maddow much more than Vicki Lawrence. Short of the hairstyle I don't think she looks like Lawrence at all. And one of these "mod" wigs would make anyone look like Emma. In fact, I wondered for a while whether she was actually wearing a wig. This is her exact hairstyle.

91SJulTA7kL._UY606_.jpg

Emma was a very good Jeopardy! champ for a couple of days. My big beef with her, however, is not winning that 3rd game. She was just shy of $100,000 and the person currently on the bottom of the list for the Tournament of Champions (according to the Jeopardy website) absolutely 100% NEEDS TO BE BUMPED OFF THE LIST. Emma was perfectly positioned to do it. But no. Now I have to hope we see another $100,000 winner before the season ends.

Brendan seemed like a very congenial guy. I liked his anecdote. He didn't do anything annoying, he smiled pleasantly, he played great!

I could get behind games like this with 3 high scores as a regular thing.

I'm a little sorry to see Emma go, only because I want to hear more of her quirks. Visiting cities with O as the only vowel, working crosswords with her left hand - just so off-the-wall nerd. I was enjoying it.

Woody Guthrie was an insta-get but then I started second-guessing Pete Seeger. I stayed with Guthrie, although I wondered if he was TOO obvious.

I'm sorry to see Emma go. All through Double Jeopardy! and coming out of the break before final I kept fearing they would ding her for the 'Comic Sidekicks' response of "Asterisk" instead of "AsterIX" (I played it back a couple of times). Emma got away with it, but it ultimately didn't help.😯

Last night was my first look at Emma in action, apart from viewing Monday's game on You Tube two nights after the fact. So of course she lost ☹️. I don't share the Emma-dislike. She didn't have a "big" TV personality, but I tend not to care for those. Did anyone else think Alex was pleased she lost? Something about the way he said she wasn't going to be champ again after her FJ answer was revealed. Plus, he brought up James again at the start of the show.

I don't know if he was pleased but I did notice the way he said this was a bit strange almost like a taunt. I did not like Emma(maybe subconsciously because she is the one who took James down) but there was something about her that  made me not like her.  I did like Erin the day she was on and Brenden seems like a nice guy. Now it will be interesting to see if he keeps going to the bottom of the board at the beginning. I like big money days and that is a way to keep things big!

Just for the fun of it, I watched James' first game again last night.(I still have all of  his games on my DVR). While he won big, it wasn't a huge runaway and the champion was in it til the end. He didn't answer every question plus there were answers that were missed(Karmann Ghia for one that surprised me) so that it took a game or two for him to get into his "James" mode. I will miss him but life must go on!!

Now that she's gone, I want to thank those who played "Who does Emma look like?" and let you all know that, while Vicky Lawrence was an excellent guess, the answer was, in fact, Kim Darby. 😉 (I didn't know Kim Darby by name, I just knew when I saw Emma the first day she played that she had clearly also played Mrs. Garrett's daughter-in-law on Facts of Life.)

I appreciate Emma's personal service to me by getting rid of James, but I like the new champion already and really enjoyed the competitive game.  I guessed Bob Dylan too, though.

I was rooting for Salome.  She could have won if she got a couple more answers right or landed a daily double.  She just happened to be up against two equal competitors.  Emma now becomes a footnote in Jeopardy history, the player who unseated James.  At least she can say she defended her title twice.  I think the person who dethroned Ken Jennings lost the very next game.

It was almost physically painful for me when Erin blew that DD. Before I fully read the clue and just saw a couple of words about music, I pre-guessed Beethoven, but then quickly realized what the clue was asking for. Is the Van Cliburn competition really that obscure?

Erin was fun to watch, very expressive.

But then I know nothing about buildings, and have only heard of the Chrysler building because of "Hard-Knock Life" from Annie.

I kept blowing the questions because I couldn't remember the category was "Vans" every.single.time. Arggh! Especially frustrating because if I'd remembered, I would have gotten at least some of them - including this one (the mister got it of course, he's a musician)

Good game today.  All three contestants finished Double Jeopardy with over $15K, lead changes, clues weren't super easy.

I had to think a second for FJ, but only for a second.  At least I wouldn't have said Arlo Guthrie 😉

Plus that one contestant was named Salom (? I think.  Alex was calling her Salome). Rare name - Biblical I assume - but I like it.

Indeed biblical, but no one I would name a kid after - she's the daughter of Herod II who asked for John the Baptist's head on a platter. The contestant did spell it Salome, which is how I made the connection originally. I said the the mister - who'd name their daughter after her? But I've seen worse names.

A very close and exciting game

I said Arlo Guthrie for FJ.  I knew it was some Guthrie. But I can use the old Alex excuse they were "before my time" I guess.

A game like this and you really see the difference between a player like Emma and James.  Emma was a very good player.  She won, what $100K on the show?  There were multiple categories she was great at and ran them all.

But then there were multiple categories with gaps of knowledge, was either too slow or didn't know.  That didn't happen often with James.  Seemed like he knew everything, very few categories where he was just out of it, couldn't even get in an answer.

I recall this was Austin as well.  He was a great player too.  And he did employ a bet big strategy too on DDs.  Not as big as James, but bigger than most.  But there were stretches for him too where you could tell he just didn't know the categories well

Those were few and far between for James.  Or Ken, back when he was on the show.

I don't think she was actually named in the Bible.  She was just called Herodias' daughter.  And Herodias was Herod's brother's wife who Herod "took to his own bed," and then enjoyed the daughter's dancing, so I imagine she was his niece, rather than his daughter.

I wasn't sure of the details, but knew I attached a negative image to her story. I'm not a big bible reader, but do well on biblical categories for some reason.  I was going off of the same article you linked, particularly this statement:

Quote

According to the New Testament, the step daughter of Herod Antipas demanded and received the head of John the Baptist.

But, on further research (BibleGateway) I couldn't find her name specifically attached to the story.

This was a great link, I think the key statement was:

Quote

Question: "Who was Salome in the Bible?"

Answer: There are two women named Salome in the Bible, but only one is mentioned by that name. One Salome was righteous; the other unrighteous.

It sounds like the name "Salome" has been attached to Herod's daughter over the years, with (from what I can tell) very little evidence.

Oh, because I'm in research gear this morning, here's what I found out about user experience librarians.

Quote

The position develops and implements technologies and services that enhance the user experience and user access to online library resources and technologies. The Systems & UX Librarian is a tech-savvy professional who reports to the Director of the Library.

Fun fact, I almost became something similar- though it wasn't called that at the time - the new position was set up to transfer card catalogs to an online catalog - cutting edge stuff at the time. It was between me and a classmate, who'd happened to work there as a clerk. Add to that, the Director of the Library and City Programmer got into an argument in front of me, and it's no wonder I didn't get the position.

Alex's reaction seemed to imply that putting the "A" is what made her answer wrong, but it would have been accepted if she'd just written Guthrie. At least that's what I inferred.

At first I thought Arlo Guthrie, just because I knew it was Guthrie, and 'Arlo' attached itself to the 'Guthrie' without my say-so. It took a couple of seconds for me to push Arlo out of the way and see Woody in his place.

That was a good game with three great contestants.

I only missed 6 clues in the first round.

I liked the "If they got married" category!  I even got one of the TS -- Jane Pauley-Graff.  Hee!  And since I do a lot of crossword puzzles, I ran that category, even getting the TS of etui and Sten.

Totally whiffed FJ, again, some more, as usual.  I must have gotten distracted by the word province, even though the category was cities, and said B.C.  I really have got to start paying better attention!  I got out of the habit of watching for a while there, and haven't really gotten back into it, I guess.  Hopefully, I'll do better next week!

Too bad Brendan took out Emma yesterday, or we could have had a Librarian-Off today.  Oh, well.

He had a decent game, could have been more aggressive on the DDs and blew FJ, but any day over $20K is still good work.

I got Regina after a little thought.  Hard to forget what Big Brother Canada 3 called "the city that rhymes with 'fun'!".

And that "tiny crossword clues" category was right up my etui, except that, like Joseph, I never can tell my apse from my nave.  So I'd have made an apse out of myself, too.
