S03.E22: Town Hall

That final scene - there is not enough cringe in the entire world. It seems like an even bigger cliffhanger than last season! And to be honest, it seems like yet another jump the shark moment.

So they had one last chance to make this pregnancy go the way of the dodo but....apparently not. I had more faith in this show.  This show really has come to rely on the strength of the supporting characters to pull it through. That, and it completely nails corporate and retail culture. The main plot about Myrtle and ageism was spot on and I loved how the gang pulled it off.

Snarky Kelly is my new favorite Kelly. Hope they keep her around. I really think they missed the ball by not casting her as snarky and jaded from the get-go.

Really happy Myrtle was dealt with. It was depressing to think the actress was out of a job when she had such a small role in the first place and didn't appear to be retiring IRL. I hope they do bring her back. And I love Jeff, but that was prime douchebag behavior out of a character who is normally decent and kind. "That's why you never trust a Jeff." He looked great in that suit, though."Is that from our Benedict Arnold collection?"

Glenn being nervous and fucking up is really getting old. It's been a plotline in at least two other episodes.

This episode was really heavy on Amy and Jonah, which is understandable, but I would have liked to seen more of the supporting characters, especially in the finale. This whole episode felt weird in that so many loose threads were left hanging.

Hahahaha!  I know a lot of people don't like Amy and Jonah so that was a great way to get them together but still make people who don't like them happy I think.  That was mortifying!  I can't even think about it.

I'm not surprised Jeff fell for that but does that mean he and Mateo are done if he's moving?  I was hoping to see Myrtle back.

What a change in tone.

Good stuff:

I love a good caper.  All the store employees developing a plan to ambush the CEO in the cause of fighting age discrimination - love it.

Jeff in a wig and beard.  (But the resolution there was unsatisfying).

Seemed tacked on:

Jonah and Amy getting it on in the back of the store.  The co-incidence of them always being photographed whenever they get together is getting unbelievable.

Other good stuff:

America looking pretty in this episode.

One more thumb in the eye for Kelly.

It reminded me of Garret filming Cheyenne in labor, and the image showing up on all the TV screens (all identically pixelated).

QFT. That's a bad message to be sending that if it's the heat of the moment and she's pregnant it's okay not to protect yourself and her.  Go over to the pharmacy and get one.

I hope it means Mateo and Jeff break up.  That was a weasley thing for Jeff to do!

I suppose if they got the emails back from Jeff, someone could release them to the public.  Then Myrtle might get her job back, but I'd prefer that she win a big settlement so that she never has to worry about money in her old age.

Kudos to Jonah for not making an issue of having pregnant sex with Amy.  He just wanted to get it in.  Yes, they should still worry about a condom.

I'm sad we didn't even see Tate at the Town Hall.  I know that using the character sparingly is what makes him so funny, but he's so funny.  I missed seeing him.

Yes, I enjoyed Snarky Kelly too, but I can see why they didn't cast her that way from the start -- there are already too many snarky/ nasty characters.

Amy and Jonah should be fired for their actions, but they won't be, because sitcom characters never have lasting consequences for their behavior.

What the hell did they do to Garrett's character? He was always the detached observer, cool but condescending. He was just pathetic here, especially with the way he kept trying to get acknowledged for his technical expertise. When even Mateo and Cheyenne take pity on you, that's just sad.

  • Love 5

I don't know how I feel about this episode......was surprised at the lack of protection, should have used something especially since she is carrying a child.  It was very racy for this time slot.  I still hate they have made Amy pregnant.

Jeff is a total weasel.

I think my favorite relationship is Cheyenne and Mateo...they just crack me up when they are together.  Total mean girls.

I hope they keep Kelly on the show, she was actually funny tonight.

  • Love 9

I like that the show went back to the secret tunnels around the building.

I was going to write that I was disappointed about the condom moment, but I think it was more that I disapproved of the condom outcome. Or lack of one. Maybe the show is just trying to point out more real world behavior in a scripted TV show. Many of these people really do make bad decisions.  Or, since they made it a point. We'll find out that Amy wasn't pregnant at that time and then she gets pregnant for real.

Is this show even getting another season?

I'm assuming they will pick up where they left off, in the fall. Dina didn't give birth either. I thought that would be the final. Pregnancies go a little faster in TV time. So either she gives birth over the summer, or they pick up where they left off.

I normally don't like farting jokes but man oh man for some reason I was crying with laughter.

I have never shipped Amy and Jonah but after tonight I like the idea of the two of them. Despite Amy being such an Amy (every Amy I know is a complete Amy - B99, my sister LOL), Jonah adores her and I'm a sucker for that type of relationship real or fiction. As far as the condom - meh, didn't bother me. I'm not watching Superstore for sex education. Plenty of adults have one and done without condoms. In the heat of the moment with someone you are familiar with and have feelings for, condoms are often an afterthought. He asked and that was good enough for me .. YMMV.

Cheyenne: "Gasp! Oh wait, I knew that".

Oh Jeff, how could you do them like that! And he apparently thinks that things will be totally cool with him and Mateo. Never trust a Jeff indeed.

Kelly managing to freak Carol out is definitely my favorite Kelly moment. I like snarky, post break up Kelly.

If this was the season finale, why did they even bother writing in Americas pregnancy? That makes zero sense!

Did everyone notice that Jeff was disguised as Sal? (the body in the wall)

On TV, people can always get into other people's emails, but most people I know lock their phones.  And would miss their phones if they were gone for a while.  Also not sure how they were perusing her emails on a laptop. Did they somehow get her password from the phone?  Or sync her phone to the laptop?

America looked pregnant to me.  Only in her abdomen, and not huge, but definitely pregnant.  I noticed it the most when she was sitting down.  That being said, I would also have been happy for the show to ignore her real-life pregnancy for a few episodes as she won't be pregnant by next season anyway.

Eh, a little stomach bulge doesn't scream "pregnant" to me, she looked like she could have maybe had a big meal or something. I feel like unless a woman looks clearly, obviously pregnant (like beyond 5 months), it's easy enough to pass it off as "oh, the character gained a bit of weight."

Except that it makes Garrett look like an ass. He's the one who set up the camera and the feed. The decent thing to do would have been to shut it off, not call everyone over to watch.

Most of the episode felt uncomfortable to me because of the awkwardness between Amy and Jonah, until the very end of course. That's kind of why I can see how some people aren't into the Jonah/Amy thing (nor am I although I tend to me more ambivalent about it). It can really cast a pall over the whole episode sometimes.

I did get a big kick out of Dina trying to stall by attempting to sing Danny Boy, which she clearly didn't know the words to. And yeah . . . the fart humor was juvenile but somehow it worked here.

I can't really blame Jeff for taking the job. He quit for Mateo then couldn't find another job.

I thought this was a great episode. The fart thing had me rolling. From Garrett's face to everyone in the stores stopping to watch and then the "You did it, no you did it!" Then you had Dina stalling and Jeff being a weasel. Ending with Jonah and Amy on camera. I'm actually still laughing. Oh and I forgot about Kelly scaring Carol. They're going there with Jonah and Amy so I'm just going to go with it. I still don't care about them but hey whatever.

My point in writing that in the first place was that there is no way she "looks pregnant" *enough* to *have* to write it into the show. They could have totally ignored it and the viewers could have certainly suspended a tiny bit of disbelief that Amy might have just gained a few lbs.

While Garrett is mostly a good person it didn't feel remotely out of character to me that he would call attention to what he was witnessing. Sure it would have been the decent thing to do to turn it off, but Garrett's defining trait isn't really decency. It's definitely not the first time he's taken advantage of one of the team's embarrassing moments for his own amusement.

For me, I didn't actually find the episode uncomfortable at all because I thought they actually did a good job of not overplaying the awkwardness between Jonah and Amy. They were both able to put their feelings aside and work together. And, yeah, there were a few awkward moments here and there but they weren't prolonged or anything. That's why I don't feel like, unlike the last couple of episodes, I don't feel like the Amy/Jonah story really took over this episode. Most of the focus was on the Town Hall and exposing what they did to Myrtle.

As a whole, I really liked the episode. Even though I have no real use for Kelly, I'm glad she was able to have some kind of power after the break-up and she got to play Carol with her revenge fake out ideas.

Juvenile or not, the farting moment was hilarious just because of how Glenn didn't let it go and the boss got pulled into the argument.

On the one hand, I definitely see why Jeff did what he did, but it was definitely a weaselly move. I do like him and Mateo together though so I hope he can redeem himself next season.

While there was definitely a lot of Jonah/Amy in the episode, there were moments between them that didn't happen that I would have rather seen than what we got. Like I really wish we had seen Amy finding out about Jonah breaking up with Kelly. And I kind of would have liked them talking about their fight last week rather than brushing it aside. But I was fine with them finally getting it on. And I'm curious where they go next season. Do they try and prolong them getting together even more by having them decide it was just sex and trying to move on? Or do they have them finally trying to make a go of a relationship of course with the complication of her being pregnant with another man's child?

I don't necessarily think Amy being pregnant is the worst thing ever or that it's a jump the shark moment that the show can't make work, but it does seem like something that wasn't necessary to add in since they only added it three episodes before the end of the season and America probably won't even be pregnant by the time they come back so there was no need to add in the real-life pregnancy especially since Dina's already pregnant as part of the surrogacy plot line.

Even though Amy wasn't directly in the scene, since we got that moment of Garrett telling Jonah "this is why you don't date and break up with a coworker", with (presumably) Jonah's stuff all over the floor in the store, I take it as a given that anyone working that day knows Jonah broke up with Kelly. I don't think we needed to specifically see her finding out. The show established that Kelly was publicly pissed at work.

One of the stores I worked in had a security office up front by the registers. Two of the assistant mangers more than once had sex in there. We all knew. Shockingly enough, that's not what got one of them fired. He got arrested for a DUI and called a different manger, not the one he was screwing around with, and asked her to take money out of the safe to bail him out. She said no and turned him in. That's what got him fired (the asking her to take money out of the safe, not the DUI). I can't remember what happened to the other one, she might have quit and not been fired. There were rumors of employees having sex in quite a few stores or districts I worked in, probably way more than just rumors, but I never heard of anyone getting fired for it. Theft, yes, sex, no. Retail is a truly bizarre work world.

BadSeed Kelly is awesome. I never really cared for the character, but if she's back next season and is still evil, I could get behind her!

Same here, but it's always managers.  If it's managers, who's going to fire them?  An associate could report them to the higher ups, but you're probably not going to have proof.

For me, wanting to see Amy's reaction wasn't about getting confirmation that she knew they broke up. I assumed by the time they were all in that meeting at the beginning that everyone knew about the break-up, including Amy. But given everything that's going on, and has been going on with Jonah and Amy, and after that fight they had, I wanted to see what Amy's immediate reaction was to hearing Jonah and Kelly broke up. Was she happy? Confused? Something else.

I have mixed feelings about this episode.  There are things I really didn't like but it did its main job in that it brought the funny so I can't help but have an overall positive opinion on it.  It did what comedies are supposed to do and at is at least attempting to make its audience laugh unlike some other shows recently (looking at you Black-ish).

Kelly was amazing this episode from the dumping of Jonah's clothes to the way she spooked Carol.  The only way they could have done her better in this episode is if it had been her who had come across Jonah and Amy's livestream sex and decided to let it play out.  Or even if she had switched the switch back on after someone had stopped it.  I also loved the "topics to avoid" white board list as someone else had mentioned.  Also hilarious to me was Amy's "are you a lesbian?" interrogation

Something I didn't like was what they did with Jeff in this episode.  He had always been a straight-man/normalish character which actually worked perfectly as a comedic foil to the more off-the-wall characters in the store.  Having him out of a job didn't work as well.  Nor did his throwing of Myrtle under the bus in order to get his job back.  On the other hand, this might put him back more in that old straight-man role.  I hope they can find the balance with him again because I really enjoyed him.  The new district manager has been a bit too serious.

I agree it was somewhat racy but I don't think it was filmed in a way to showcase hotness. Maybe to showcase how hot they are for one another but the lighting was too harsh for true hotness.

Not that I watch for sex ed but I almost wonder if they should have just skipped the condom mention.  I think they only did it for the "I'm already pregnant" joke but of course so many of our thoughts would jump to thinking that's not all they're for.

I am confused as to how they got recorded, though.  Surely they weren't having sex out on the main floor?

This absolutely would be a fireable offense, especially since it was streamed and you just know someone got out their phone to record.  But who knows, maybe they use the email to bring back Myrtle and save Amy & Jonah's job.

The camera was put in some of the shrubbery they were using to decorate for the Town Hall meeting. When the meeting was over, the shrubbery was put away in the back room with the camera still in it, apparently functioning and conveniently at the correct angle.

I worked at a store where two of the department managers had sex in the office and were totally open about it, and no one did anything about it. They didn't seem to have any fear about discovery, since they actually would tell people they'd done it. I think that the video streaming would be more of a scandal than the sex itself, so I suspect that is how the issue will be hand-waved to allow no disciplinary action to be taken.

I don't know how they resolve the problem that Amy is Jonah's supervisor, though. The Mateo-Jeff story has made that issue a big enough deal that they can't really pretend Cloud 9 will overlook it. Though, maybe they will overlook it, since it's TV. I guess we have to wait and see.

Does giving Jeff the promotion mean he's replacing the current District Manager, or is it the kind of move that will put him in a comparable but not replacement role? I assume St Louis is in whatever region Chicago oversees, but there might be a structure where there are different levels-- like district then state then region then country then continent... Chicago could be HQ for the entire country, not just the for Missouri or the midwest, or something like that.

There are managers who don't want to deal with poorly behaving employees, so if this were just up to Glenn, I think Jonah and Amy would skate and it'd likely end with him since it's unlikely someone above him would be made aware of it.  The video is an issue because it's evidence, as opposed to word-of-mouth, of two employees having sex in the work place.  It's not something that will stop with Glenn.  And it was made public.

I really enjoyed the finale - I think season 3 was great! When I found out that the finale had a sexual content warning I assumed it had something to do with Amy and Jonah having sex, but I though it would be a flashback where it was magically discovered that they'd had sex before and Jonah was actually the father of Amy's baby. I'm really glad that they didn't go that route.

That said, I am liking the pregnancy plot and Adam as the father. This show has always been about realism and showing non-perfect, flawed characters. It's just like in life, you get thrown an unexpected obstacle and it sucks.  It'll be interesting watching Amy navigate this unexpected curveball and watching her become stronger. It's a great parallel to her situation when she was pregnant with Emma - now she has a chance to grow and make her own choices without regressing to her 19 year old self.

Hopefully they will delve into Jonah's backstory and family as he navigates a potential relationship with Amy (and her children as well, which will hopefully flesh out his childhood and upbringing). I don't think we've gotten much at all on Jonah's background.

I'm curious to see what the fallout of the accidental sex tape will be. My theory is that they will somehow find a loophole or Jeff will save their jobs with his new position. They obviously aren't getting fired.

Since they've given no indication that Adam raped Amy, it was totally within her power to say, "No glove, no love." There. No pregnancy.

I hated all the stuff with Glenn and the CEO and the farting. It highlights how childish and inept Glenn is at his job. Seriously, how does he still have a job? Dina’s much more effective at actual management even if she’s got next to zero social skills.

Jonah and Amy: nope, still don’t care.

I liked the dark side of Kelly and find it a shame that this is the first time all season I’ve found her an enjoyable character.

I used to find Mateo insufferable but now I think he and Cheyenne have the best dynamic in the show.
