Well no offense to the all women teams (in general on TAR and definitely on this Price is Right special) but they all run together and are generically forgettable. If they had the Twinnies or Myrna and Charla that could've been more interesting

One of the Twinnies was there and she was called to compete but they never made it on stage.

Ahh thank you to the person above... I didn't remember nor could remember who the heck   Ashley and Ally were.  Loved seeing Nat & Kat (one of them pregnant!), Bopper and Mark   and Bopper looks like he's lost some weight??, Flight Time and Big Easy, Leo & Jamal.  I did see one of the Art & AJ pair and sort of recognized the bearded/long haired guy but names slipped my mind.  They panned too fast and for me it was too far for me to see who else was there.

Did a little googling-- here is a list I found elsewhere-

TAR17:
Nat & Kat
Brook & Claire

TAR20:
Misa & Maiya (the golfers)
Art & JJ

TAR21:
Jaymes (No James in sight)

TAR23:
Brandon & Adam
Ally & Ashley

TAR24:
Flight Time & Big Easy
Leo & Jamal

TAR25:
Tim & Te Jay
Dennis & Isabelle

TAR27:
Kelsey & Joey
Tiffany & Krista

TAR28:
Erin & Joslyn
Tyler & Korey

Nobody from prior to Season 17 (boo...) and it looks like most if not all are from the Southern CA area.. or nearby.

I think Justin & Zev (TAR15) were in the audience as well.

Boston Rob and Rachel (of Rachel & Brandon fame...) were both on the Big Brothers TPIR show.  Natalie of the twinnies was on the Survivor TPIR show- which I thought was odd as I thought they were going by which show the contestants originally appeared on. Guess her sister couldn't make it...?

I didn't recognize several of the teams. Were some of them early boots?

What the hell were they serving the audience, contestants and Phil?  I know people tend to overreact on TPIR and a few really overreact but damn everyone last night acted like they were mainlining a crack/caffeine cocktail.   They were hamming it up so bad it was like some SNL skit.

Zev was definitely there. There was someone there with him dressed very similarly, but the name on his tag looked like "Evan" so I don't think it was Justin.

Natalie Anderson (the Twinnie) actually WON Survivor (uh, spoiler alert) so it makes sense she would be on that one instead of this one.

I was obsessed with identifying all the racers (and Survivors) in the box. Every time they showed the box I paused the show to try to identify everybody! I had to google Misa and Maiya, and Ashley and Allie -- I couldn't remember them. Besides the aforementioned Evan (?), there were a few other people I couldn't recognize. One was a lady whose name was something like "Pasha" who was sitting next to Jaymes at one point. Maybe she's his wife, or a date? Then there was a lady who was sitting alone next to Tim and TeJay the whole time (she never stood). She looked kind of like Sheri, but older. I think her name tag said "Michelle". I wanted to believe she was a past racer because she looked really familiar. But maybe she was just reminding me of Michelle Duggar! Or maybe S10 Mary from Kentucky?

I watched both this one and the Survivor one, but other than trying to identify the contestants (much harder with the survivor folk) I kinda felt it was a waste of time. Even the contestants who got on stage barely got a chance to speak, so as a fan I felt disappointed. Mostly we just saw them whispering to the regular contestants. Jeff and Phil didn't get to say much either. Even in the Showcase Showdowns, Drew didn't let the celebs speak. Instead of asking them about their charities, he just mentioned the charities himself. Disappointing.

I really wanted to see Brooke and Claire go crazy on stage!

The same place where I got the list from also had people posting snapshots of the videos  trying to identify some people too (likely the same ones as you were trying to identify lol).   Yeah.. I wish I had heard more about what ALL of the contestants (TAR ones) who got up to contestant row charities were.

I only half watched Big Brother and didn't even  bother with the Survivor one (aside from not knowing it was on) as I'm not a fan at all of those two shows.

Finally got to see The Price Is Right special. I know that TPIR contestants are an excitable bunch, but what was the excuse for the Racers? Or Phil? Was he smoking crack offstage? Seeing Erin & Joslyn win left me cold, since I totally couldn't remember them from TAR28. Turns out they finished eighth. On the other hand, Flight Time & Big Easy had to lose to somebody in the Showcase Showdown, and there were fewer nutbags from the Racers group than with Survivor. And damn, Bopper looks young.

Link to comment

The reason the TPIR contestants are an excitable bunch is because the producers literally train the contestants to act that way so I imagine they taught the contestants and Phil to be excitable.

Not sure I'd call this "the media," but since it's cross-seasons and in another televised setting...I was very amused while fast-forwarding through commercials (it even made me stop the FF!) to see first Doyin Richards in a commercial for some kind of calendar? organizing? thing for busy dads, then two commercials later see Idries and Jamil in their Ancestry.com commercial.  What are the odds that 75% (if I recall correctly) of the African-American male identical twins on TAR would be in 2016 commercials?  (Now wondering what Kami and Karli, Drew and was it David?, and Natalie and Nadiya would advertise.  Is that all the twin sets?)

This media is RACE related sort of...reports are MCGUYVER is already in trouble as its pilot it being extensively retooled....hopefully this doesn't bode well for the show and it will be quickly cancelled and a fall cycle of AMAZING RACE can be put on like back with the VIVA LAUGHLIN failure.

I just saw an ad for MacGyver yesterday. Networks fiddling with shows is nothing new, and with low expectations for fridays, I can't imagine a scenario where the show is yanked quick enough for race to have a fall season there. Since the days of Viva Laughlin, ratings have eroded so much that there is no longer a huge difference between the haves and the have nots. Viva Laughlin was such an incredible failure, but Friday ratings are so low now that it's impossible for MacGyver to be as big of a flop.

If I was forced to bet, I would gamble on a Wednesday run in between Survivor seasons.

This is what I would have liked to have seen for a long time. Alternate seasons of Survivor and TAR and lock in that Wednesday timeslot.

On the other hand, these days the broadcast networks don't usual wait for shows to find a groove anymore. The fact that the show is even scheduled on Fridays is suspicious.

Oooh, I like the idea of alternating with Survivor in the Wednesday timeslot. Survivor's fourteen-episode seasons and TAR's twelve-episode seasons would cover all 52 weeks if there were two seasons of each per year.

But yes. I agree that the MacGyver timeslot is odd. It's almost like they greenlighted it based on nostalgia without a pilot, and now that they've seen what they've got they're hastily trying to get rid of it.

I really don't think that's true, they have nowhere for 3 episodes of BB on the fall schedule and CBS announced the fall schedule already at Upfronts.

I would be skeptical of this as well. Its one thing to make small subtle changes to your schedule after its announced (Fox has already tweaked theirs so new series Pitch gets a shot), but removing 3 full hours to squeeze another BB season in? Doubtful. I'm definitely intrigued by the possible speculation of airing on the CBS All access app. With the new star trek show there, they could really be angling to be the frontrunner for having original content on their streaming service, unlike the other networks.

Fuck you! There was no real reason on the unproposed changes during the upfronts. If one of the new shows going to be cancelled due to low ratings or poor viewership, TAR 29 will slightly air early in mid-October or November to replace them.

Sorry for the Chicken Little impression. It's just that I like TAR, flaws and all, and I consider Big Brother to be its antithesis. Why should that show get more exposure? And then I fret about CBS making TAR an online exclusive show, which would suck on many levels.

It's only partly true.  BB19 is an online series only available through CBS All Access.

The 19th BB season won't be an online season, but it will be the first online season of the latter franchise. BB19 will be aired next year.

Bumping up to see if there's been any news about TAR30 getting cast. I'm guessing Bert and Elise are waiting until TAR29 is officially scheduled.

We are casting now for a race that travels sometime between October 2016 and January 2017,  for approximately 25-30 days.  - this is from official TAR website.

This is according to Georgiapeach on RFF that TAR 30 will be rumored with some sort of returning racers.

Thanks for the news. And I'm pulling for TAR to win tonight at the Emmys, especially since it would embarrass CBS. Average-to-mediocre TAR is still better than most shows in that genre.

ETA: Is The Voice that good? They only have two permanent judges. Mark Burnett must go to bed thinking this is payback for never getting the prize for Survivor and The Apprentice.

MacGyver did really good in TAR's timeslot.

Ratings: MacGyver Debuts With a Bang, 11-Year Audience High for Time Slot

Quote

Using little more than tin foil, plaster dust and three paper clips, CBS’ MacGyveropened big on Friday, drawing 10.9 million total viewers and a 1.7 demo rating, easily outperforming The Amazing Race‘s year-ago premiere in the time slot (5.8 mil/1.2) and dominating the night in both measures.

TAR30 is being cast. And here's the part that makes me nauseous:

Quote

People close to the production tell me that season 30 or 31 is likely to be the show’s final season, though if TAR 29 does well—whenever it eventually airs—that could certainly change.

I know that Phil isn't going to be homeless if TAR is canceled, and life will go on. It's just . . . Survivor survives on its rep from a decade and a half ago for the most part, and Big Brother is still a thing with CBS. Why should TAR get whacked? I mean, 28 editions is a lot, and we probably wouldn't have gotten five if it aired on ABC, but I'm still a little pissed off at the notion of impending doom.

I can't see that happening. Part of me would think it was relegation and hate CBS for that. Also, summer is basically Big Brother for the network, since it airs three nights a week. Even if they "encourage" Bert & Elise to recruit more "exciting" competitors, they would still make the housemates look bad by comparison.

Link to comment

Its definitely the ratings. As sad as it is, Survivor and BB nearly double our ratings, and now the Emmy voters have moved on as well. 28 seasons is an awful lot, and we will get 29 at some point (though I am not looking forward to the format). 30 seems about the right number if they're gonna call it. I hope we can end with a regular season of normal folks instead of gimmicks or celebrities. TAR has been a great part of my life for 15 years now, and I'll be sad to see it go, but it's certainly had an incredible run.

Best week ever: the superior Canadian edition gets ...

Hey mods could someone go up to this post and put the part I left out of it in "spoilers" tags.  I was thinking of watching it online but now that I accidentally read that I won't bother now.  The heading here for this thread said NO SPOILERS so I didn't think I would get spoiled coming here alas.  I know it is near impossible to police all these threads that super closely so thought I'd post this in case a mod would notice it this way.  Thanks.

It is probably time to pull the plug on TAR.  All the gimmicks and bad casts regards the gimmick seasons have just been too much.  And the lack of longer legs but instead fly into one city and stay there or on the fringe of said city for a "country" episode instead of 24 hour bus rides or drive yourself across several countries just dumbed the show down way too much.  It should have gone out on top like David Ortiz instead of dwindling slowly away until it gets cut like some journeyman player would.

It was must see TV for a long long time and I will always be grateful for Classic TAR especially.  But I hate it has been dragged down the the level it is at now.  Please exit with some remaining dignity before Season 30 gets casts as "The Retro Jersey Shore" edition or some such drek.

Let us have one last season where some wonder and awe return to the show.  Maybe poorer people who have never been able to travel abroad ever in their lives who would actually appreciate this chance.  At the very least, normal people in general.  Not mactors, not internet "stars", not "luv bunnies".  Just grateful people off on the adventure of their lifetime.  You know.  Like the early seasons.  The ones that were a cut above other reality shows.  The ones that were must see TV.

I have to also wonder if part of it is costs.  Flying is getting more and more expensive and frankly its more and more of a pain.  These days, I'm really surprised that the contestants are still able to usually find flights within a reasonably short amount of time, given that airlines have cut flights so much and flights are so full that usually when you miss a flight, or need to change it, you can't get another flight for a day or two.

Man, this place is dead. Fucking CBS.

Had a TAR moment last night . . . The Daily Show dedicated its opening segment to the demise of Vine. For the "Moment Of Zen," they showed three Vines. One of them was Zach kicking a soccer ball just right to transform it into a Dalmatian puppy.

Link to comment

Yeah, the CBS site has had that message for a while. CBS is the only network that hasn't teased any of their midseason moves yet, which should definitely be happening by the end of the month. Other than what replaces Pure Genius and what fills in between survivor seasons, theres probably not much to announce.

Highly unlikely TAR would get that spot, as it's a family show in a 10 pm hour, and CBS still has several dramas on their bench that will likely get a crack at that Thursday night slot in time for February sweeps.

I'm starting to think we could possibly get held until the summer, but that is pure conjecture. Theres just not many openings in the schedule.

Found this under Reality Blurred on my blog: "Amazing Race 30 will not be filmed this year, and may never be produced." I clicked it, but the article isn't up. Just another reason why 2016 has sucked a copious amount of ass.

ETA: It's up. To his credit, Andy does not double down on the "Only way to save TAR is for it to die" talk.

Sadly, this great show is probably dead.   They couldn't just take a nice show of people racing around the world with nice scenery porn.   They had to muck it up with dating and reality stars and the like.   There wasn't enough drama with just killer fatigue and stress.   They had to muck it up with manufactured drama.   Then the ratings died.  So they killed it claiming low ratings.
