S23.E03: Make Your Mark

The judges choose signature looks for each model, but some ladies aren't happy with their makeovers. Later, Ashley encourages the contestants to feel comfortable in their own skin as they get ready for a nude-photo shoot.

So, wow, I had to go back to the intro credits to figure out who some of these women were, pre-makeover.  I barely have these people figured out anyway; I really needed a Before & After.  Those bangs (Brit: fringe!) aren't doing the former Veronica Lake-ish Krislian any favors, but most of them look terrific.  Oh, except I see one curly perm that already has a big clot of fried frizz in the model's TH--that's not going to go well for her in the long run.

I can't believe how great that lavender hair is working out for whatshername--it's the best version of that weirdness I've ever seen.  It's flattering!  Plus, I was admiring all the shades in her hair instead of checking out her different sized eyes.

The twin complaining about her fade got a way better deal than the one that got extensions.  And ginger girl should shutty because she looks ten times more beautiful and dramatic with that deeper, richer red.  (Oops, I hadn't seen the end yet:  bye.)

How hysterical is it that they pixilated out the very edge of everyone's butt?!  Puss, nips--understandable (for silly American tv) but that last new moon sliver of booty?  LOL

Odd that they used a photo where none of the three looked good.  There must've been at least one picture where someone was successful--I guess they thought that wouldn't be fair?

Bottom line:  these makeovers were a much truer effort at helping them than Tyra has delivered for the last five or six years of absolute cray.

Marissa is one aware bitch. I, unlike Courtney, give her no props for being mature beyond her 18 years. Please, Marissa's just doing whatever to win. I can't be the only one that heard her holler something like, "the bitch never wins Top Model" as she pounded up those stairs. That's the only reason for her attitude change. She also mentioned something about not trying out for the Bad Girls Club in a TH. Like a lot of 18 year olds, who've been raised on reality TV (boy, I feel old because I remember when the only reality shows on were Cops and The People's Court!) Marissa knows that how she comes across matters to the producers, and she's working it.

Some of the makeovers were fine: Courtney, CoryAnne, Kyle and Paige all got good ones.  And while I didn't care for the multi-color aspect of India's, it was fine otherwise.  But the rest were done few favors.  They basically ruined Tatianna's look - her fro was far more stunning than the generic long weave.  Giah did indeed looked more like an aspiring pop star.  While I think Cherish was annoying, she was right about her hair; what WAS the point of taking a natural redhead and making her look like a bottled redhead?  Krislian looks even less like a model and more like a porn star/stripper, albeit a now vaguely Asian one.

Most of the photos weren't that great.  Again, Courtney was the best, with India, Paige, CoryAnne and Kyle doing well.  The rest were mainly varying shades of 'meh', but both Tash and Kody had terrible pictures, worse than Krislian and Cherish, imo.  And though I'm not going to miss Cherish, I would've sent Krislian home instead because Cherish had occasional hints of being a model whereas Krislian has none.

I just can't even with the bitchiness in the house, but I will give props to Marissa for realizing how crappy her behavior was, and for having the maturity to apologize for it.  If only Tash and Kody were that mature.

Makeovers AND nude modeling?!  Merry Christmas to me!  Most of the transformations were forgettable but what did they have against Paige??  Rita called that mess  "rock n roll" like that was a compliment.  She looked like a reject from Def Leppard not like a high-end model.

The twins are wearing on my nerves so I'm guessing they'll be around for the long haul.

Uhhh..did Rita Ora try to own "blonde hair and a red lip?". Girl, bye.  And send your Rimmel checks to Gwen Stefani.

Glad they went for My Little Pony instead of trying to make India look more like Gigi Hadid than she already does. The biracial girl with the model mom (name?) looked better before the makeover. The twins have great bodies but that's about it -- I see more runways than editorials in their future.

Love the revamp and new judges. The Tyra-free format is refreshing. I do not miss her enunciating... every... word. Love Rita's compassion for the girls. Love Ashley's attitude; she could be Eva Mendes' sister. I thought Drew might be bitchy but he's cool.

He seems bluntly honest so far, talking about the realities of photo shoots and runways.  Kind of like what Kelly Cutrone should've been but she was too busy being bitchy.

I found Cherish about 20% annoying, 80% sympathetic in this episode.

While it was real unfortunate that she compared dyeing her hair to bleaching a black girl's skin (reeeeal unfortunate), they messed up her hair. I want to say about five years ago there was a boom of naturally redhead models that were A Thing for a while there, and that's since petered out, but she likely could have still been marketable (as much as any post-ANTM girl is, which is to say not very) and had a modeling career without ever having to color it. And that wasn't even a cute bottle red. I figured maybe they'd do highlights and/or lowlights to give her hair additional dimension and some brightness, which wouldn't be such an ordeal for her natural color, but nope, it looked like they gave her an all over, one-dimensional dye job, and that is basically blasphemy. And it was really irritating to see that no one, not even for a blink of an eye, even attempted to acknowledge it. Not a fellow contestant, or the hair people, or the panel. Yeah, it's just hair, but gingers are super sensitive about this shit, and with good reason.

Still, she should have either refused and rolled the dice on being sent home for a stank attitude, and kept her hair un-fucked-up, or pushed the tears down and gotten it done. Getting it done and having a stank attitude about it is a lose-lose. Still go home, but with a generic Maxim model's hair. Blergh.

I love having ANTM back in my life, with an all-ladies season, but good god Rita Ora get off my TV. Zero charisma, her accent is annoying as all hell (I get it, you're from London, but you can pronounce the 't' in 'photo' if you just try), and she keeps trying to sell us on her super mediocre accomplishments. Her and Ashley Graham should have switched jobs. Ashley's way more qualified as an heir to Tyra's throne, as an actual model, and has energy and presence. Also, Rita, maybe don't brag about doing a nude shoot and maintaining boundaries with Terry Richardson. I'm guessing she isn't aware of the many, many accusations against him for harassment, assault, and rape, but she should be, and that is one of the grossest humble-brags.

I've never been able to figure out how super dark eyebrows with really light hair could be attractive. I wish Rita had brunette hair.

And I can't focus on anything Courtney says because her eyebrows are beyond editorial and taking over the rest of her face. There is nothing else I notice about her but eyebrows. And how she should have been coughing in the crook of her elbow, not into her hand. :P

So Rita said you should maintain your boundaries and tell photographers what line you're not willing to cross (which I agree with), buuuut if one of the hamsters actually went in with that attitude, wouldn't they get chastised for going against the photog's wishes and having a high maintenance attitude? Which is it, ANTM? Stand up for yourself or lose your personal dignity for "fashion"'s sake?

Also they pretty much found all these girls at the mall, right?

In their mind that is probably exactly what sets the "winners" apart from the "losers" (those terms used VERY lightly when applied to this show). Winners will sell their soul to be a model. That's how you know they really want it. If they fall for the "stand up for yourself" girl power talk, they don't want it bad enough. haha

Fortunately for Cherish, red hair dye fades so freaking fast in about a week she'll be pretty much back to her normal color, which I had no issue with (everything else about her bugged, but I thought her hair was great).

I'm not a hairdresser nor am I a natural redhead, so y'know, take this with a huge grain of salt, but I think it completely depends on your starting hair color and the processing used. I'm a natural auburn, and have gone vividly red a bunch of times, and without bleach or anything it held fast and maybe dulled a little over time, but it grew out, not washed out. It lasted just as long as any brown shade I've done. However, I've had blonde friends who attempted red either by box or by salon, and it washed out in a couple weeks. And of the natural redheads I've ever known, at the very most they ever did, it was highlights/lowlights, and they all had really similar reactions to Cherish at the very idea of dyeing their hair (that basically, it would ruin their virgin color and it would take a longass time to ever get back to natural).

Just watched it, gee Cherish, she's not all that.  She reminded me of Jade Thompson on Britain's Next Top Model, a few years ago.

I think the reason Rita Ora's accent is annoying is because, at least to me, it sounds fake.

I like CoryAnne's hair longer.  The issue with the twins is that they seem too old to act so immature.

Marissa probably wanted to be on Bad Girl's Club, but maybe they wouldn't take her.

Eh, I would have sent Krislian home over Cherish.  Cherish flipped over her hair (and at this point, as long as ANTM has been on, I have zero sympathy for girls freaking out over their hair) but I doubt Krislian is ever going to be able to give more than video vixen.  And Cherish is full-on delusional which would have been good to watch.

The twins are annoying and it's interesting how they seem to be pitting them against each other.  Tash seems to be the better model but they are pushing Cody to the forefront.

CoryAnne didn't need extensions.  One comment I've seen compared her to Bernadette Peters and yes, from some angles that's true.  There are pics from upcoming epis where it looks like her hair will be straightened and in that case it looks so much better.

Giving Giah a Ciara hair cut and then telling her she looks like an R'n'B singer was not funny.

I do agree that overall these makeovers were a lot less awful than previous Tyra versions although I'm pretty sure she would have had to bless them before they were done.

Courtney is annoying me so she better wind-up with a great portfolio after this because I haven't been impressed so far.  I don't get how she got FCO.

Yeah, she was right. It's really hard to replicate natural red hair. I used to work with a woman who had been a natural redhead but her hair is now totally white (she was in her mid-40s, found her first gray at age 12, and had been dyeing to cover the gray since high school), and she was REALLY particular about her color and her colorist because she said her colorist had gotten it as close to right as possible. (Regardless of the color, she had a beautiful head of hair. Long and thick and lush. She probably turned heads when it was in its color glory.) Redheads really do have unique color and she went from something that was uniquely hers to a flat, obvious dye job that, as she said, anyone could have. She was much more original with her natural color, and it'll be really hard for her to dye it back.

Is it a tragedy? No. Did she look better before they messed with her, and will it be tricky and/or time-consuming for her to get back to natural? Yeah, I think so.

I finally watched the ep and Cherish's hair looks much better after. It was a kind of washed out carrot red naturally, which, if that's what you want to be, don't be a model! If you want to go back to that, you are young enough to wait for it to grow out. I do think it was funny how everyone was like "she's complaining about going from red to red" because it's true. If you want to be a model, and you're daddy or mommy isn't a billionaire, you are very likely going to have to change things about your look. She's lucky they didn't dye it black! And wow, she gave up her integrity? for a TV show? BWAHHAHAHAHAAAA

the one who had the most right to complain was India, I mean, freaking lavender...but then I saw it and...I liked it! She has a face that can pull off anything. And I don't mind her little freak out before the photo shoot because she sucked it up and did it. I thought it was funny how she jokingly rationalized that she was wearing pearls so she wasn't totally nude. I liked her from the start but she is growing on me.

I think Giah's makeover is the worst. That hair is horrible. I remember thinking she looked nice before (though I already can't remember what her hair looked like) but now, ugh.

Can't stand the twins. Go back and forth on Marissa. The rest are okay so far. Not the worst group ever.

It's also a known hazard of appearing on this show.

I have always been convinced that they ask the girls ahead of time things like "what do you think is your best feature" and if they say their hair, they are the ones who get the most drastic changes.

Now, I've always said, back when I was still in the acceptable age group for this show, that I would not go on it because I will not cut my hair short. I had to once after a bad perm and never got over it. lol But if one decides to go on this show, one should be prepared to have the worst possible thing done to their head. That way, anything else, like dying it a slightly different shade of the color it naturally is, will be nothing.

Oh, and I didn't at all get why all those bitches attacked Courtney for wanting to sleep, in her own room! When Marissa shrieked "this isn't even my room" she should have said, "Fine, then go take the party to your room!" It's called common curtesy. But then I remember, this generation doesn't know what that is. They are all a bunch of freaking unicorns.

It was pretty awesome.

I love that Marisa (the young one, I think that's her name) is a student of reality television. She prepared. And the prize is a development deal with VH1, she might be able to take advantage of that.

I also love that this show is hosted by Rita Ora. I remember hearing about her quite a bit but never hearing songs, so it's fun to watch her talk about herself as this successful boss. Not in my pop culture universe, and I watched her on X-factor last year.

I never thought I'd say this but I wish Tyra and some of her minions were still on the show.  They were annoying but they did a better job of judging photos than the losers who are judging this season.  Almost all of those photos looked like dead-eyed, hoochie Maxim rejects. Not classy at all.

Someone needs to call animal control on Courtney's eyebrows because they're mauling her face.

So they took a natural redhead and dumped cheapo dye over her head and made her look like a generic drugstore bottle redhead.  As a natural redhead myself, I roll my eyes.

Kyle looked cute before, now with the top of her hair frosted she looks like a Bieber groupie from five years ago.

Maybe, maybe not. I have to agree with whoever said upthread that the purple hair distracts from her Shannen Doherty mismatched eyes, so she may have a chance.

And, according to RTVGames:

Spoiler

a blonde wins this season

They still seem to have early access to photos for the whole season on which to base their predictions, but last season that lead folks to believe that Devin, Bello and Lacey were final three. Boy, was THAT wrong!!

Marissa is annoying and so are the twins. When the one who got the more boy look (I can't tell them apart) went into the room was she giving herself a pep talk or was she actually talking to someone? "I'm girly, I'm feminine!" Ok.

I kinda felt bad for Cherish, I think Krislian should have gone home

I like India and Giah. They both just seem down to earth and not bitchy like some of the others.

She's pretty damned successful.  I follow fashion only casually and wouldn't know a Hadid if you hit me over the head with her, but I'd recognize Ashley Graham if I saw her on the street.  She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition this year.  She might be bigger than what the fashion industry considers plus-size, but that definition is beginning to expand a little.

See, I felt bad for her because the media always does that shit to black women, especially darker skinned black women.  It's like the media doesn't think that a dark skinned black girl CAN be girly.  So I felt for her, and I don't get all this, "the twins are SO annoying?" why because they don't grin and kiss the blonde girls' asses and try to be "likeable?"

For me they are annoying for the same reason all twins on any of these kinds of shows are annoying. You never really get to see them as people because they are "the twins". I actually felt bad for them the first time they were being called for picture critique and Rita actually said "twin one". I was like WTF! She laughed it off but you could tell one of the twins was PISSED. And I do not blame her one bit. Then again, you're going to come on the show together, that is going to happen.  I wonder if they legit both want to be models or if one is there more or less supporting the other (like the redheaded twins back in the day, where the one who didn't want it as much was way better at it. lol)

I also think that mess with Courtney (eyebrows?) had nothing to do with color and everything to do with just being rude, inconsiderate assholes. That wasn't the only room they could sit and yell in. Go yell talk somewhere else.

How was short haired twin's hair all that much different than what she showed up in? She ranted about being a girly girl and having short hair being a problem with that, but she had short hair when she got there. I'm confused? I would have bought her argument if they'd chopped off 6 inches of hair or something but she basically got what she already had only better.

It is pretty funny that the two who made the biggest stink, Short haired twin and redhead, had some of the least drastic makeovers in the shows history, a trim, and a slight change in color. (I get the whole, virgin hair thing, but really, don't go on this show if you don't want anyone touching your virgin hair!)

For someone complaining upthread about the racism of others, that's a pretty racist statement to make.  No one expects the twins to kiss anyone's ass, blond or otherwise.  But they do expect manners and respect, which many other competitors (of all colours) have exhibited.  There's nothing racist about expecting someone to act in a decent manner, especially when that someone is a good 5 or 6 years older than the other people present.

And as Mabinoqia just pointed out, the twin with the short hairstyle looks pretty much the same as she did before, so I don't understand her ranting about wanting to be girly.  I think their intention was to make the twins look different and they accomplished that.  I don't think it was some media conspiracy to beat down the black women.

As for the stink in the room with Courtney and Cody and Tash, I think it's been said before that the producers on this show manipulate things.  For me, if I'd felt sick and wanted some privacy, I would have left the room and gone downstairs or something but TPTB probably would have put the kibosh on that.  Nothing better than some manufactured drama.

I also don't really get the point of sisters or twins going on this show (although, there was a pair of sisters who were semi-finalists that probably would have worked better on the show as they didn't at least look like twins, Latashia and Jayohna).  Although looking at their pre-show work, Tash and Cody seem to work together a lot but they should have known going on this show was just going to provide opportunity for the judges and producers to push their buttons by making comments like Rita's "twin one" and the makeovers.  Based on judging, it's obvious they are trying to set the twins against one another.

My point was that some people don't like it when a black woman expresses herself in any way, shape or form.  Unfortunately in this society if a black woman does express herself she gets labeled as "angry" where white women get more sympathy.  I don't believe that's racist, that's just what happens.

The reason the twin didn't want the haircut was because they were going to shave the sides and she felt that was too much of a masculine type look.

That was really something when Sally walked away in the middle of Cherish's sentence. On the one hand, I was thinking "shut UP Cherish." On the other hand, Sally was really really really rude.

I wrote Cherish off the minute she said "Cherish was meant to be cherished." Sad that she got cut right after makeovers, but she had to go sooner or later. Given the lack of actual mentoring this season, we would've had to spend the entire season watching her make duck lips at the camera. Now we won't have to. I'm thankful for that.

India's hair looked amazing, if a little too dark along the first couple of inches. She is one of those people who looks unremarkable in person, but really makes an impact on camera.

I don't get Courtney's win. She looked dead-eyed and expressionless to me.

Marissa is someone who I could not spend two minutes with in real life. But she's playing the game for real.

I feel bad for Coryanne. I bet she mentioned her mother to improve her chances of getting on the show. Now she regrets it as they beat her over the head with it constantly. And if she wasn't reased by her mom, she may not have learned much about modeling from her.

I didn't see any racism. And I can't really get behind the idea that this is evidence that the media always tries to de-feminize black women, when there are five black women who received makeovers but only one whose makeover can be considered "masculine." All the others got long, flowing locks. (I'm including Cory Anne, although I don't know how she identifies.) I also don't think the twin with the haircut (whichever one she was) got a less sympathetic edit than Cherish, who was equally upset about her makeover. Both of them came off horribly. I do know that black women often don't get a fair shake in the media, but I don't think this is one of those times.

I am an old white woman, willing to admit I didn't get her strong reaction. But then, I'm literally in the middle of my second chemo round (as in IV pumping as I type this)for stage 4 cancer. My hair is falling out in clumps pretty much non-stop. My sense of perspective re hair is a bit skewed at the moment.

I have an acquaintance who beat cancer and when her hair grew back, it grew back curly (it had apparently been straight before but I didn't know her then). She wears it short. She'd worn her straight hair short too. People have actually said to her, "Your hair came back curly! Was it worth it?" and she, a plain-speaking sort, will say "Is having curly hair worth surviving cancer? Like, would I rather have left my daughter with one parent in exchange for straight hair? Really?" I thought of that when the one twin was panicking about what essentially amounted to her getting her edges shaped.

It cannot be said enough: fuck cancer. I wish you strength, RealityCowgirl.

I actually laughed out loud several times, so in that sense this season is a success.

Courtney to India, who was worrying about the nude shoot:  "I've been to Burning Man!"

Rita Ora to Tash about either the photo or the makeover or both:  "You just went from this (holds one palm up) to THIS (holds the other palm one inch higher) in my eyes!"

Law Roach:  "I just have to tell the truth or my heart will bust!"

Courtney again saying the twins were almost 30 in her talking head.

To the twins:  Courtney may have been whiny and annoying in many ways, off camera or on, but there is no reason she would fake that really awful-sounding cough.  Do you really want to stay in that room with her spewing germs just to somehow prove a point or teach her a lesson?

I don't have anything against Rita Ora, but I think Ashley Graham would've been a better pick to be the host of ANTM. She has a lot of personality and is actually a model.

I agree that Cherish shouldn't have come on the show in the first place if she didn't want her hair to be dyed, but I would be pissed too if I just got my hair dyed and then got eliminated when I didn't want to dye it at all.

I love India's hair now. The color is crazy, but beautiful and the way her hair was cut is really flattering.

I don't exactly know why most of the girls seem to hate Courtney. She doesn't seem all that bad to me, but I don't know if that's just due to editing.

Cherish's exit is so hilariously NTM I can't stand it. That goes into the special vault with Elyse's rant and Tyra screaming at Tiffany.

Right? Miss Virgin hair had a moment. Who told her she could be a model?

I also enjoyed girly girl twin being a raging Hulk. The bathroom fixtures didn't deserve your rage.

I laughed and laughed over that.

One of the "coming up" segments had the Paper Magazine guy saying to someone, "The way I saw you behave on set made me believe less that you can be a model." Who did he say that to??

I agree they aren't doing too much mentoring of these girls. As much as I hated the word "smize" at least when she started saying that, Tyra was trying to give some tips to them.  Telling them to slay and be a boss doesn't seem to offer much.

Are they posting the final photos anywhere?

And also, what are "online" and "video" models? Isn't it just "catalog"?
