We don't know what happened between that and Richard's death.  And is it impossible that he might not have gone out of respect for Richard or to support Emily, but to be there, even in a small way, for Lorelai?

And if Jason's father is still alive, he would have been at the funeral, and with Jason's mother.  Maybe Jason hasn't spoken to any of them for ten years -- but unlikely.  Especially given that he appears to be back in the region, last seen heading for Houston (he said at one point, maybe in jest), or heading out of the Dragonfly to check on a false report of a fire at his condo.  This little plot wrinkle did not bother me one bit, because I was so glad to see Jason again.  He was so unceremoniously ejected from the series during the Dragonfly opening!

Related:  this is amusing, from last March -- "Jason Stiles is returning and WHAT CAN IT MEAN???" No spoilers if you have seen "Winter," which you have done if you are reading this:  https://www.bustle.com/articles/150938-jason-returning-for-the-gilmore-girls-revival-could-spell-trouble-for-luke-lorelai  Sometimes a returning character is just a returning character, not a life-changing event.

that's what I took it as. Like - the Jason thing literally died after the season 4 finale so we don't know after cooler heads prevailed (remember, Jason went back to get Lorelai back) - that Richard and he buried the hatchet. Or even - again just to give support.

Independence, maybe, but people who aren't driven don't accomplish what she accomplished in high school and college.

Rory struck me as verry familiar.  I went to a very elite high school and college and if you'd looked at any of us from high school and college days, you would have thought we were all fiercely intelligent, extremely driven, on the fast track to changing and ruling the world, etc.  Fact of the matter is that we were a bunch of (yes) smart but privileged brats who had NO idea that the reason we were able to dream about changing the world or curing cancer or ending child hunger was because we sat atop a mountain of privilege, mostly bought and paid for by our parents.  EVERY graduate of my high school class went to Cal, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Brown, Vassar, etc.  You wouldn't be able to pick us out of a crowd now.  Yes, we are well-educated.  But there are plenty of us who realized that maybe the biggest pitfall of being the "best and brightest" is believing your own press.  The crash down to earth was BRUTAL for many of us, and is still ongoing.

Rory strikes me as EXACTLY the kind of girl who populated my high school and graduating class.  Yes, cute, charming, devastatingly smart and well-educated and witty, but when you get right down to it, I don't buy that Rory was all that driven. So she wanted to go to Harvard/Yale and got there.  Her academic accomplishment is no more astounding than tens of thousands of others around the country, only she got to fulfill her dreams because The Gilmores were right there to back her up and pay her way, after a chat with the admissions committee, to boot.  There's nothing wrong with taking every advantage offered to you, but Rory always struck me as extremely blind about exactly how much privilege was handed to her.  She grew up the child of a single teen parent. That teen parent was herself raised with wealth, never denied any social advantage until she started to reject those advantages on her own, very bright, and at least through age 16, very well-educated.  As far as "life as the child of a single parent" that is going to be as cushy as it gets.  Rory actually struggled with very little as I recall as a teenager.  She was expected to achieve and she did.  She achieved a lot in a softly-lit bubble of privilege without ever really forging her path in a rough world where nobody cares she is Lorelai Gilmore's daughter or even Richard Gilmore's granddaughter.  Just like all the girls I went to high school and college with (and I myself) have found out -- "drive" when there are really no obstacles in your way, and "drive" when you now need to make your way in the real world with no backup are very different things.  It is why my generation has had a total failure of confidence and achievement in our 30's and 40's.  PLT: never believe your own PR.

Rory was told from the crib that she was perfect and special and brilliant and destined for greatness, not just because of her own attributes but because she was the trophy Lorelai Gilmore took great pride in showing off to the world as proof that she was right and her parents were wrong.  I don't doubt she loves Rory to the moon and back, but part of the way she raised Rory and the pride she takes in Rory is based in the amount of "fuck you" mileage she gets out of showing off her little genius to her parents who didn't think raising a baby alone as a 16 year old was a wise idea.  In some ways I think Rory has fulfilled her life's purpose in being a giant middle finger to her grandparents, and now she's struggling with finding a place in the world where SHE belongs -- not where she belongs as proof her mother was right, not where she belongs as leverage to use against her mother, but for HER.  I think that is where part of the lack of direction comes from.  When has it ever been important for Rory to be Rory?  Out in the world without concrete goals like "Chilton" or "Yale" I'm not at all surprised that she's flailed for a decade.  She has no real substance to her at all.

OOOOkkkkaaay, apparently I am IN my feeling about Rory and growing up and disappointing my family LOL

I think a very real example of this was Rory's boat-stealing meltdown during the terrible Yale years after one guy tells her she doesn't have what it takes to be a journalist.  And nearly dropping out of Yale.

Rory is coping much better now with adversity, and is brave to embrace a less traditional, rootless life in search of her next writing assignment.

On the other hand, she doesn't seem completely happy or comfortable with it.  Maybe that's why she strings poor, boring Paul along ... as an anchor to a more stable and predictable life.

On the topic of Rory and Paul...

Up through to the end of the diner scene, I was fine with it. I cringed a bit, but I didn't hate it. In my opinion, it meant that Rory was poopy, but not totally shitty, probably because she and Lorelai weren't the only ones who could never remember him. The fact that Luke couldn't even remember having a conversation with Paul about his own father's wrench must mean that Paul really is that bland, as nice as he is, and it's not just the girls being douches as usual.

I kind of get it. Rory's traveling all over the place, only popping in here and there for a day or two at a time. I assume they met in New York since it was easy for him to come out to SH but had to stay overnight. He's certainly nice enough, so Rory was fine going on dates. But by the time she realized he was bland and that she didn't want to date him anymore, her only options to do so would be over the phone which is considered a shitty move, or during one of those super rare visits they have when I'm sure he sends her texts leading up to it like "Can't wait to see you!" "So excited!" So she'd feel like she was kicking a puppy if she did it then. If they really lived in the same place for a while, I think she would have done a better job of setting him free. Not saying these are good reasons, just I can get how it could happen without totally vilifying the poopy person.

But then we see her with Logan. And now I DO categorize her as a shitty person. It would be fine with me if I thought Paul was also on the same page with having an open relationship, and I could explain his over-invested behavior as Paul trying too hard to win her over so that she didn't want to see other men. But RORY referred to him as her boyfriend. He didn't refer to himself as her boyfriend while she cringed slightly. SHE said it. Perhaps I'm too old-fashioned, but the terms boyfriend and girlfriend mean the relationship is exclusive. So while seeing Paul isn't cheating on Logan, seeing Logan IS cheating on Paul.

And this would be one thing if it were her first dealings with cheating, BUT IT'S NOT!!! Super shitty.

Okay, after watching the first episode, I think this is better than the X-Files revival, but not anywhere as good as I'd hoped.  The plot feels like everyone Rip Van Winkled the last ten years or simultaneously came down with a case of soap-opera amnesia where they aren't aware of what they've been up to for a decade.  ASP could have made it work if she'd written the revival to have a shorter time hop; say, write the setting as having been 2010 instead of 2016 (She'd need Kirk and Zack to shave off those graying beards, though).

Both the writing and the acting come across as "Trying too hard, but aren't we cute anyway?"  The pop culture references seem forced even though that was one of the fun things about the show originally.  But they don't feel as forced as the technology references. "Greetings, fellow youths.  Please be sure to give Gypsy's Garage a 'like' on Facebook!"

The role-reversal between Michel and Lorelai made me wonder for a few minutes what show I was even watching.  I wonder if "Lorelai fires the kitchen crew" was intended to be the new "Emily fires the maid."

Rory's wardrobe isn't working for me.  I don't know a lot of 30-something professionals who flounce around in short skater skirts for work or corporate interviews, but maybe New Englanders are different?  Again, maybe it would be easier to watch if I just pretended all the characters are 5-6 years younger than they claim to be.

I've long been of the opinion that the show went off the rails in Season 5 as soon as Logan came on the scene and Rory began throwing herself at him.  I had hope that ASP was doing it on purpose as leverage against anyone else's being able to bring it back home for the wrap-up.  Now that I realize she meant to do all that from the beginning, I think I might have to pull a Palladino myself and refuse to acknowledge that anything after Rory's high school graduation is canon.

Loved the return of the strummy la las.  Loved the sets.  Loved Kelly Bishop.  Was surprisingly okay with Kirk!

The best joke and best delivery were Dolly Parton's. The episode ends. Lorelei trudges away in shock and awe, realizing that Emily has shrugged off her shroud and somehow, maneuvered her daughter into another mandatory, weekly, ritualized encounter in Hartford, the only witness someone nominally neutral, but paid by Emily to be there. Luke comforts his wounded champion and escorts her back to the safety of their camp. SIlence.

Huge downbeat and, "Here you come again..."

AmandaPanda: See, that's what I don't understand. Writing a Talk of the Town piece for The New Yorker *is* your big break. The smart freelance goes back a couple of weeks later and pitches them another one, and then another one, and another one, until she's successfully done a few and then asks for a meeting with a features editor and pitches features ideas. Meanwhile, she uses the New Yorker credit to land assignments from other titles.

Of course, Rory's *first* mistake was to do a journalism degree. Nothing to write *about*. I always tell prospective journalists to study a SUBJECT.

I've been watching some old episodes, and way back in college, Paris did try to make Rory take an interest in law and/or medicine. Paris had the foresight to see that journalists are dime a dozen, but journalists who also know law and/or medical jargon? Very rare. Not that I think Rory should have gone to law school or med school with zero interest in these subjects. But she could have heeded Paris' very sound advice by studying up on any subject that she would be interested in writing about, instead of shrugging it off as if this is just another one of Paris' crazy ideas.

Paul kind of reminds me of Zachary Levi playing Chuck at his dorkiest. Am I supposed to side with the main characters and agree he's boring and forgettable? Because I cannot. If I'm supposed to feel bad for him and think that the people who forgot him are jerks, then mission accomplished.

Absolutely. Though Rory did take some intro to econ classes in season 7 with her grandfather. Should have done more with the econ and poli sci classes. Why would someonewho wants to be Christian Amanpour not be thinking along those lines? Heck that international relations club she did for 1 episode was great, too bad she self destructed out of it.

The Paul storyline should have been the first signal that this revival was not going to be painting people well.

I find it interesting that so many hate the episode because Lorelei and Rory are still somewhat shitty people at times.

Honestly, as soon as Paul walked in the door, I knew it wasn't serious.

There have been several episodes where they have been straight up bitches at someone's expense. Some of it has been hilarious (or at least I laughed), but it was mean all the same.

Personally, I think everyone thus far has aged well (including Zack) but they put way too much makeup on Lauren Graham. Luke looks virtually the same.

I was wondering if Rory's voice changed. I did notice the difference.

I did have tears in my eyes at Richard's funeral. I expected no less from Lorelai though.

Oh. I totally blocked out Rory being with Logan. Bleh is all I got.

I thought everyone looked great, except for Zack and Miss Patty who really aged. Kirk actually looked a lot better in the Revival. Grey hair suits him if you don't stop to consider that he's still a child. Also all of Rory's ex-boyfriends looked better in the Revival and they were hot to begin with. Er maybe Dean wasn't my jam in the OS but I could really get how he's other people's type. A little like how I regard Luke/SP aesthetically. I don't think I would have spotted a toupee on SP if I wasn't reading Internet stuff on the show.

Of the older generation, Emily and Michele were the most amazing looking. I kept thinking Michele's life long obsession with vanity and dieting and his looks served him very well. He looked fine in that little bathing suit at the pool.

Babette and Taylor were looking much the same and quite natural.  I wasn't startled by anyone except Miss Patty whose weight loss has changed her face.  I can only hope that Liz Torres' health is the better for it, and she's not actually ill.

I agree, other than Miss Patty being almost unrecognizable and actually looking ill IMO (which makes me really sad) and Lorelai looking a bit puffy around the eyes (especially in Winter) I thought everyone aged well and looked remarkably the same.

Do you read Rory fanfic? It's pretty common that authors correct the show's "Journalism Major" to English/Poli Sci so that may be where it got into your head.

The Jason Stiles cameo was kinda random.  And it made me think - if someone with a long if complicated history was going to come pay his respects to Richard, wouldn't that be Christopher?

Paris being a fertility specialist was a surprise, but it kinda clicked when she mentioned that they offered complete medical and legal services, I guess it allowed her to combine her two passions.

And while it's a bit of a bummer she and Doyle were divorcing, it does make sense that if Rory's two friends both basically settled down at the same age, one (Lane) would have made it work and one (Paris) would be divorcing.  That's more realistic.

That moment with Luke giving Emily that awkward standing hug and Emily worrying about her hair was cute.

Christopher's non-attendance at the funeral really bore out my feelings about Christopher and his relationship with the elder Gilmores. E/R may have liked him and wanted him to be their son in law, but he had nothing but disinterest and concept for them which he covered with some Edie Haskell type phoniness to still maintain their approval. Richard's hospitalization after a heart-attack clearly meant nothing to Chris, as far as Richard's own health and feelings. Chris didn't spare a thought for that- he was only focused on the triangle drama.  After that performance, it doesn't surprise me that Chris wouldn't attend the funeral if his romance with Lorelai had been dead for years and remains pretty unrevivable.

Finally got around to watching this last night.  I loved Gilmore Girls through my twenties and early thirties.  With the exception of a teenage pregnancy, the relationship I have with my parents mirrors the one Lorelei had with hers.  So it was with great horror that I felt like I'm see my future with my mother. You know why Emily and Lorelei don't get along?  Emily yells at her about her not meeting her expectations and Lorelei fights back instead of blindly accepting it.  My guess is that Emily doesn't call Lorelei either so that's the reason for long bouts of no talking.  Why can't Emily just accept Lorelei for the successful person she is?  She seems to have no qualms with Rory who is jobless and homeless and flying to London weekly via her trust fund to sleep with her college boyfriend.

I found it bizarre that Lorelei was talking about wanting a baby with Luke when her own daughter is 32 and Luke's is in college.  That shipped sailed 10 years ago for Pete's sake.

No one seemed happy, especially Lane, and the whole episode was extremely depressing.  I guess Richard was the heart of the show and with his death there is no love in Gilmoreland.

I’m late to this obviously, but I still felt like weighing in. I really enjoyed Winter. After the AD revival, I have a deep appreciation for how disappointing revisiting a well liked show can be for me. I was surprised to see it considered depressing. Other than Emily mourning her husband of course, most characters seemed content to me. Luke and Lorelei were together. Rory and Lorelei were on good terms. I took Rory’s career to be that of a moderately successful freelance writer. I assumed the New Yorker was her most prominent success, not her only published article ever.

The gag about her storing boxes in 8 different homes in the way of 8 different households bothered me more than the Paul joke. (I missed that she was still seeing Paul when she was with Logan though.) I think I’d rather move in with my mom than couch surf at a different friend’s house every week.

I understood why Emily was mad at Lorelei, but once Lorelei apologized I wasn’t sure what else she was supposed to do.

Favorite line: body shipping cash

least favorite: Paris misusing “less.”

In front of her mother's closest friends just days after Richard's death Lorelai shared two completely inappropriate stories that painted him as a horrible father.  What Lorelai shouldn't have done was give an apology and then get annoyed that Emily didn't accept it right away while blaming Emily for asking for a nice story.  Unfortunately, that was what Lorelai did.  Who wouldn't be devastated when your dead husband is disrespected at his funeral by his daughter?  It would take time to forgive.

Also, I thought it horrible that Lorelai apparently hadn't actually seen Emily for 4 months since the funeral but assumed she was still angry because she hadn't returned her calls or emails.  Most people would want to make sure their parent was doing okay after the loss of their spouse however bad their relationship was.

Link to comment

And upon the first time seeing that parent, maybe don't be so quippy to point out a mistake by the parent.  A little graciousness never hurt anyone.

Link to comment

I am generally on her side when it comes to her vs the elder Gilmores but Lorelai's behavior at the funeral was unforgivable IMO. Her subsequent attitude as have been pointed out stunk. How self absorbed must you be to not understand why the widow would be upset for more than a second. Funny she didn't tell Rory what happened for a whole year. She knew she was in the wrong.

Link to comment

I thought what she said was horrible but when she did try to explain to her mom that she had drank too much and hadn’t eaten in days, Emily made comments that she didn’t believe her and that she didn’t care that her dad had died. I never took it as she set out to deliberately hurt Emily. Lorelai knew she was wrong because she only reached out via email and phone messages. They both had hurt each other so much over the years.

Just rewatched this episode on Netflix, and what made it worse was how touched Emily was that Lorelai intitially volunteered to stay after Rory left. The look on her face broke my heart; she was thinking that something good (her and Lorelai finally getting closer) could come out of this. And then Lorelai got drunk and made that horrible rant. The look on Emily's face then...man, if looks could kill.

You'd think all Lorelai's past experiences of getting drunk at public events would have taught her a lesson, but noooooo...

Well, I hated it. I LOVED how many people came back for this..... But Loreali looks like a freak and acts as selfish and wretched as she did in the original series. Why does this town worship her when she just orders everyone around? And she and Luke are looking to have a baby? What the heck have they been doing for ten years? Aren't they cornering on 50? What a stupid plot hole to bring in Paris.

And Rorie is now a complete jerk who can't find decent work and sleeps around. The series groomed her to do wonderful things and she just became a monster.

The writer has clearly lost track of the characters.

Yeah.

This episode to me though at least had the best moment, when Emily called out Lorelei. That was pretty epic and the one thing from the revival I wish had happened on the actual show.

I can think of the countless times Emily should have said something to Lorelei and her the fact that she tells her story to Stars Hollow and Emily and Richard looked like villains. Emily and Richard has their moments, no one is denying that, but Loreali did as well and she refuses to acknowledge that.

After finishing them all, I think showcasing every character that was ever on this show is the only point to this revival thing. Good to know everyone still sucks (except Lane and Zack) and the Gilmore girls are the absolute worst. Rory cannot accomplish anything without constant privilege and handouts, and Loreali is still running for the hills when anything bothers her.

Rory having no qualms about cheating with Logan makes me hate her even more.

Sorry if this has been covered.  Luke says "I went to Rory's graduation".  Huh?  No he didn't.  I just watched it before this!  There was an entire plot in the finale where Rory could only get 4 tickets (Lor, Chris, Emily, Rich) and all the random townies were melting down that they couldn't attend.

Consider this a Nitpick post!  I know there's a decade between episodes.

He's probably talking about Rory's high school graduation, which he did attend, and Christopher did not. Keep in mind that the Palldinos had nothing to do with Season 7, claiming they didn't watch it. They treated the revival, for the most part, like Season 7 didn't exist..

Yeah, I always scratched my head on that, was he talking about high school or college? If it was high school, he was right, but it was more that he went to the college graduation, which we knew he couldn't.

They just started showing this on CW or Fox I forget, here so this is my initial viewing. I forgot why I watched this show in the first place. Everyone is just an awful fucking human being. Lorelei, her mother, (previously the father) and Rory are ENTITLED AWFUL HUMANS. But still going to watch the rest of it just for shits and giggles. Actors playing Rory and Luke.. How did they ever get an acting gig? God awful. Rory is a cheating *****, never mind the way she treats her "boyfriend"  Really not funny the way they were constantly forgetting him. Luke and the wifi is not funny. Lorelei was an asshole after the wake at her mothers house. And I HATE that woman. The way she treats the "help". I guess I'm hate watching. This is one nasty show. Brings out the worst in people.
