Ottis August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 I watched the show for the first 3-4 months. Liked it initially, but as the panels became more and more left, sometimes with a token dissenter, I stopped. TLWS, like TDS, is best when it pokes fun at all sides, not when it takes one side. That's why I stopped watching TDS during JS's last two years, and dropped it with Trevor after a month. kricka August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 I LOVED THIS SHOW. My friend and I had tickets back in April, but the day of the taping we were both so sick, we couldn't go. I am so sad that we will never get the chance to go. Meh. One of my favorite "news" shows.I guess the lack of comments here tells the tale... :( 1 Link to comment
trow125 August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 I watched every single episode. It was my favorite late night show. I loved the correspondents and Larry's dry wit. And as a middle aged white lady I feel I learned a lot from it as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue watching "The Daily Show," and "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has been extremely hit or miss for me (more miss than hit, except for the convention-week shows, which I thought were very good). I know she's said she doesn't want to do it, but I wish Sam Bee could be convinced to do more-frequent episodes. Bleh. 7 Link to comment

Hanahope August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 I like this show much more than the new Daily Show, and I will watch the whole thing, unlike the Late Show with SC (where I skip the interviews 75% of the time). I loved the correspondents, they were absolutely fantastic (for the most part - Ricky Valez was very hit/miss). I loved the diverse viewpoint, which is so sorely lacking in late night (or hell just about anytime of the day) TV. I'm very annoyed with CC. 3 Link to comment

CC's not going to upend Jessica's work on her upcoming scripted series just because some people are stamping their feet demanding she do a daily topical show. If she wanted to do that, she would have been hosting TDS by now. So, unless they come up with another topical show for someone else to host, we'll probably be seeing Chris Hardwick's show at that slot for quite awhile. Lantern7 August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 Found out about this through Bleeding Cool. But look on the bright side . . . this frees Larry from the election, barring Trevor tapping him for TDS. And he can get in better shape for when he has to wrestle Hannibal Burress for the right to take a dump on Bill Cosby's grave. #haventforgottenaboutyoumotherfucker Any chance the correspondents will be picked up by TDS? Not like I'd want/expect a retread on "Nightly Nightly," but some of those players have talent. I agree that there is a lot of talent there, but I kinda doubt any of them will end up on Comedy Central anywhere. I mean this was a network that even after TCR succeeded didn't manage to develop anything from TDS correspondents after all. Link to comment
atomationage August 15, 2016 Share August 15, 2016 Called it two months ago in the Last Week Tonight Media forum. I liked Larry Wilmore on The Daily Show. This show just wasn't that interesting. I still say it's blowback from The Correspondent's dinner, where his performance was awful. 3 Link to comment
Kromm August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 Bull. Shit. The show started out weak, but gained its feet a few months in and was great afterward. Far better than TDS 3.0. This really is looking like fallout from the Correspondent's Dinner, and that's a total crock. A big problem is that I don't know where a guy like Larry, in this position, goes from here. It's probably been years since he did anything like regular stand-up comedy, but I imagine that's really his only option (and that pays peanuts if its not paired with other stuff). He's probably not gonna be getting any sitcom offers or other work from Comedy Central. I just hope he was able to sock most of his salary away, because it's going to be rough going for him now. 3 Link to comment
MisterGlass August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 (edited) I'm sad about this, and when the show first premiered I didn't like it. I checked in intermittently. formerlyfreedom August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 Larry is a talented man - writing and producing, in addition to performing. I think he'll be just fine after the initial doldrums. I do feel that the show did struggle, although I personally thought it was showing improvement. Sounds like it just comes down to the numbers, and if they couldn't jump start it after the convention, it wasn't going to happen. A shame, really - I won't be sticking around for @Midnight during the next three months, that's for sure. 5 Link to comment

Larry's White House correspondents dinner appearance was not quite at Colbert's level, but it was mighty impressive and he doesn't have to apologize like poor Lewis Black did for years after his lame turn. brgjoe August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 I have been watching from the very beginning. The show has improved, but I also understand a lot of people didn't give it a chance after the first few episodes. The show has really been hitting it's stride in recent weeks. Larry's segment on the Baltimore police and the scathing DOJ report was both sad and brilliant at the same time. And he seems to be the only one still talking about the Flint water crisis. Sadly, I don't know who will be the voice for the stories any longer. That all being said, I think some of the downfall of the show was those silly panels. Rarely did they shed light on anything of any important. More often, stupid stuff would flow out of the mouth of Ricky Velez and (sadly) Mike Yard in recent weeks. More often than not, I would just tune away from them. Wouldn't be surprised to see a big dropoff of viewers around that time. Still, I will miss Larry. And most of his correspondents too. And it really, really sucks to see his show cancelled before the election. Couldn't they have at least let him go for a few months longer? What was the hurry? Oh well. Good luck, Larry! Will still follow you on social media. And hopefully soon you will resurface on my TV screen very soon-like! 4 Link to comment

I'm guessing he gets residuals from THE BERNIE MAC SHOW (he was the creator and showrunner for the first season) and the other shows he's written for over the years. (He wrote one of the funniest episodes of THE OFFICE, "Performance Review" and worked with a lot of folks from that show on other things. He's got a good reputation as a writer. Someone will pick him up to produce or executive produce. The other talent and crew is who I feel for. Sure, I wasn't crazy about some of them. I never understood Ricky's appeal. You're sullen and uninformed and smoke a lot of weed, we get it. But, I hate to see anyone lose their gig. When the show was good, it was very good. Larry's opening monologues were often funny and pointed. The Drumpf bits were always funny to me. But the table discussions seemed to be the other comics trying to prove they were funny, often at the expense of the guest. 2 Link to comment
jamblastx August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 Very mixed feeling about this...I only added TNS to my DVR earlier this year along with TDS and it seemed all too often that they would both play the same clips and make very similar jokes. In the end, I think that the two shows were too similar in both content and in points of view. I think that TNS would have been better served with a retooling rather than a cancellation. Personally I would have loved to have seen a half hour of the panel rather than just the last ten minutes. To me that was TNS at its best. Also it is very weak of Comedy Central to cancel it three months before the election....and it is essentially replacing that with repeats. Hard to believe that they are going to get significantly better ratings with @midnight/repeats as opposed to TNS/@midnight in the 11:30 and midnight slots. Anytime a network replaces a first run show with old repeats, it's being short-sighted and only cares about a potential slight tick increase in ratings rather than a potential boom for a show to find it's legs and deliver better ratings. 2 Link to comment
SpiritSong August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 What a crap decision, CC. Larry's show got steadily better as time went on, though of course there were a few clunkers here and there. I will miss his wit and intelligence and social conscience. I gave up completely on the Daily Show, but still have the Nightly show on my DVR. I have no reason now to watch Comedy Central. I hope Larry can get a show on HBO. The main problem with his panel segment was there just wasn't time to get into any discussion in depth. An hour long show would fix that, even if it was only once a week. Probably too much like Real Time, though, for that to happen. A series of stand up specials by him would be most welcome. Larry Wilmore is a very, very talented man. 2 Link to comment
SillyOldClothCat August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 No! They why did they need to rush this decision and pull the show before November? That's some short-sighted vision, CC :( My favorite part of The Nightly Show was the panel discussion. I think the panel should have taken up more of the show. It really benefitted when they showed rational discussion of truly diverse viewpoints. I think some notes to comedians on the panel - guests and regulars - on how to express their opinions without resorting to lines from their standup routines would have benefitted everyone. I'd love to see TDS add a panel discussion! And I loved and will miss "keep it 100". 3 Link to comment

I absolutely loved the panels once they retooled (shifted to 3 instead of 4, only had 1 guest and 2 regulars, etc).I really do feel like they just never regained the people they lost early because I have trouble believing that if it had started as strong as it's ending that it wouldn't have caught on.With the exception of Velez, I really will miss all of the correspondents and their commentary. It was downright sweet for them to let Mike Yard win Pardon the Interrogation last night for his final appearance! 4 Link to comment
GHScorpiosRule August 16, 2016 Share August 16, 2016 Well, I'll be the dissenter here with respect to the panel discussions. Yes I'm anal enough that I would look at my time on my dvr and the panel always started at the :22 mark of a 30 minute show (with commercials) and the "discussions" would end at the :27 mark. Not even 10 minutes. I never warmed up to Ricky the idiot; and "Nightly Nightly" was a skit I always fast forwarded. This was really a 30 minute show crammed into a 21 minute slot. When the panels were good, they were really good. But they were uneven. There were a lot of panels with comedians just trying out their 3 minutes of new material. I forgot her name, but they had on an african-american professor a few times and she knocked it out everytime. But she was only on like 3 times. Then you had on people who were just plugging a book. I think they really wasted the potential of the panel. And the reason they couldn't stay to the election was because the contracts were up now. If they were going to renew them, then it would have had to have been for another year, and it seemed that the network didn't think the show would be worth that investment. This timing wasn't an arbitrary thing. 3 Link to comment

Holly, Robin, and Grace (as well as Francesca.)I liked some of the random skits they did. The skit about the overuse of Antibiotics was sooooo funny and so was the banana eating skit. I also found the piece on led poisoning scary, but so important and informative. I wonder if part of this is backlash on Jon Stewart. He was one of the creators. It didn't take off the way they hoped and then he was left the network before the end of the first year. We haven't seen him which suggests he's not involved. Mostly just annoying, but he hardly killed the show by himself. I totally agree with you on everything. And actually I find Ricky less annoying than many here. He's done some good stuff in scripted bits and has improved on panel. I think it's more of an example of a bigger failing - the tolerance for less than the best sometimes and not understanding how the audience was reacting. With this format you can't accept multiple contributors who were funny, but not good on panel. Just like you can't keep a recurring bit that so much of your audience actively hates just because the cast member likes doing it. I never got the sense that there was a bad cop here who was insisting that everything had to be sharper and funnier and rejecting funny pitches that didn't have a point or fit in to the larger POV. It's why I really like the show, but feel that there was a lot of untapped potential. 1 Link to comment

ganesh August 17, 2016 Share August 17, 2016 Ricky's "in the street" pieces were fine and the sketches were good. He just wasn't good on the panel. I don't know if he's too young to have formed much of a pov. I sure didn't. Or, as I pointed out, the Clintons have been investigated for longer than he's been alive. That's going to affect your opinion too and it's a really good point to consider. I wish he would have been able to grasp that larger picture though or gain some more self-awareness. I feel like they could have played to the cast's strengths a little more. I know you can do the same bits over and over because they got stale. They did a lot of the PTI and Y Files, but could have done # and That's What She Said a lot more, and not nearly enough "in the street". Link to comment

Thanks for letting us know we amounted to useful feedback. I can't imagine what the redditers found to hatefully spew about, but I'll be sure to steer clear. One of the things I loved about TNS is that Larry seemed to be very clearly at ease with and committed to representing female voices, and he didn't act like it was some super-human difficulty to find quality women to do that. It was just a fundamental to the show, and proves all the other shows who are apparently incapable are actually just lazy and unwilling and not really interested in doing it. Also, on last night's panel, I was glad you (Franchesca) had the guts to try to expose the false equivalence Larry was trying to make between oppressed people wanting space vs dominant people seeking to exclude. I know none of this is Hardwick's fault, but I can't see @midnight filling the same need as TNS; I had gotten in the habit of watching it after TNS because I needed to cool down from getting all worked up watching TNS before I could go to sleep, but on its own I don't see it being worth staying up for. If CC is going to become nothing but endless repeats of South Park and Tosh.0, I will surely be getting my TV elsewhere. But I'm a 51 year old, not a millenial, so probably they don't care. 4 Link to comment
ms.o August 17, 2016 Share August 17, 2016 It just makes me sad. I really liked everyone and ill cry on Thursday. Just regret not getting to see show live, but having a baby and living in Midwest kinda hindered that. This, TDS, and Sam Bee got me through some long nights I liked how Larry would joke or make sarcastic comments and then slam a serious truth bomb. One that always sticks out to me was Larry taking on NRA and the children-on-children shooting. He final comment of "“By your rationale, we can solve toddler shootings by arming every toddler!” just made my stomach drop. On lighter note, Robin's black lady sign language will never stop making me laugh. 1 Link to comment

I just wanted to say thanks for watching and leaving thoughtful commentary and constructive criticism every night. From day one I've read the forums here and on reddit (even though they hate TNS and especially hate me) to get an honest idea of how people viewed the show and my performances and I've always appreciated how balanced the feedback was here versus everywhere else on the internet. I know the show and by extension, I am not perfect, but it's been really frustrating to read so many untrue and completely unfair things about myself and the show's cancellation online. And by online I mean reddit, seriously don't go over there lol I always tried to share points I read here with the cast and crew in an effort to make the show better, so please know your voices didn't go unheard. Anyway, no need to respond I swear I'm not fishing, it's just nice to know some corner of the web will miss us. Take care. reddit can often be a sewer. Even people ON reddit admit that sometimes. You and Larry both did great jobs on the show. No comedian doesn't have their share of misses, but trust in reddit to make you feel like there were far more of those than reality and that they counted the most. BTW: Even if you were fishing? Big deal. You just lost a great job, and DID a great job, and deserve some commiseration. 3 Link to comment
