It is lovely, but is mostly quite rural outside of LR and NWA

Yes I don't disagree with that at all. That's why the NWA metro area really stands out to me when I drive through it. But it is also why it really frustrates me that the Duggars act like they live in the middle of nowhere. Compared to people who are only an hour or two away, they have access to really nice opportunities regarding healthcare, employment, education, and shopping that they don't take advantage of at all.

Exactly.  My parents lived out in the quite, quite rural part for over 20 years.  I have lots of stories.  They moved "to town" as they aged and even in town so many things were not available except in LR and now many are available in NWA.  My stepfather was blind in one eye due to an accident and lack of a properly qualified eye surgeon even in LR.   I could go on and on.

It shows how rather duplicitous the Duggars and TLC were when you see where Springdale falls on the chart and look at a map and see how Springdale merges into the NWA area.

Yes! My favorite Duggar obfuscation on this is Michelle claiming Jinger thinks of a big city as one with a Walmart in it when corporate headquarters is literally right there. LOL

To be on topic, I will say that Jill sending her kid to one of the better school districts in the area is something that I do approve of, and I really hope Sam gets to follow in his footsteps, as does the other kid when it is time.

I’ve never heard of that policy before.  The schools in my area will let anyone ride the bus as long as they are in the district.

Its standard in my area. MA is 2 miles for K - 5. CT & RI it is 1 mile for K - 5. NH is 2 miles for K - 8. VT varies widely and in NY its 1.5 for K - 6 to be eligible for a school bus or metro card.

In the district where I taught in CA, we were told that the school was responsible for the child  from the time they left home until they returned home.  I'm not sure how that worked, but I do think each district made its own bussing rules.

For the first half of elementary (kindergarten through second grades) I walked to and from school because the school was only about three houses away from my house. I could literally see the school from my front yard (this was also the 1980s). Then when I moved to a different part of the city, and didn't live as close to a school, my mom would drive me to elementary and junior high (3rd through 8th grades). I would initially go to a daycare center after school in elementary, but once I was in junior high I did walk home on my own. I didn't take the bus until I was in high school, but that was legitimately further away from home than my elementary and junior high schools.

I'm kind of amazed at how big Izzy's school district is. That's about the same size as my school district was in the Chicago suburbs. I was not expecting that for the NWA area. There are no issues with Derick and Jill driving him (and eventually Sam hopefully) to school. I would imagine the bigger issue would be waiting in line at the parent pick-up and drop-off sites, but even then, that could be less time than waiting on the bus. I don't remember my bus ride being an hour though...maybe about 20-30 minutes, and I was one of the middle stops.

from the pics Jill has posted of walking Izzy to school with him and Sam riding bikes, it looked like they were on a paved path. Possibly their neighborhood has a path that comes out near the school or something. Quite a few neighborhoods near elementary schools have them in my area. That way the kids can walk or ride bikes to school without going near the road, and if they do have to cross a road near the school there is a crossing guard.

Paved paths can have stop signs to indicate stop the path is ending and you need to pay attention that you are entering automobile traffic.  Especially bike paths can have signal signs.

That looks like a paved path.  Their streets have sidewalks beside them and gutters.

Around here paved paths are on campuses, quads, or are actual bike paths usually made over a dead railway. Everything else is either a sidewalk, alley or a street with no sidewalks. Although there are plenty of self made (unpaved) walking trails through the woods and such.

That street still looks like a street to me. I think I can see faint wet tire tracks. Either way it looks like a great place to go for a walk or bike ride.

Let's please move on from where the Dillard children's theoretical bus stop would be and the exact distance from their house.  Thank you.

I live in a very different part of the country from the Dillards and we do have paved paths like that all around us.  One of my daughters lives in a relatively new development and it was built with multiple paths that are paved and look just like that weaving through the outside edges of the development.  The one leaving that area to go across a major street into a shopping center has a stop sign right before it connects to the city sidewalk.  The park near another offspring's house has three paved paths like that in it.  I don't know if the intention was for children's wheeled toys, but it's perfect for those, scooters, skates, etc.  Even the retirement center near me has paved paths for the seniors for their walks.

I'll have to go look, but IIRC the streets in their subdivision look like regular streets with gutters at the edges and sidewalks.   I just verified.

I completely thought they were riding on a road .. I’ve never seen wide paved paths like that over here

I thought the Dills lived somewhere rural to be on a quiet road

I’m all caught up now though 😃

I have to say good for him. Nice to see someone attached to the Duggar name that has gone so far and not just sponging off JB or running a used car lot. I'm not a fan of his but I give him kudos.

Agreed. I actually used his real name in my post for once. 😁

Derick has mentioned wanting use his degree to help those who can't themselves. His history on SM tells me he and I have very differing thoughts on what that might look like.

Sometimes educated assholes are more dangerous than uneducated ones. Until I'm proven wrong I don't see how Derick passing the bar is a good thing.

It will benefit his wife and children with a higher standard of living, and if we are lucky just 1-2 more kids. This will also benefit the kids with more time with the parents.

Its not like they're poor now and how will Derick having a law degree allow him to spend more time with his kids?

It amazes me that Deertick was actually able to get through law school and pass the bar. It is quite an accomplishment. But since he's likely to use his law degree to make a career out of trying to limit the rights and humanity of LGBTQ people, ban abortion, and put prayer back in schools, I don't exactly find it cause for celebration.

What Derick wants to do with his degree and what he actually ends up doing may be two entirely different things, thankfully. It’s not like he has a particularly good track record of following through on anything other than graduating from things.  I do give him credit for that, but he’s neither an accountant, nor a missionary, nor an employee of Cross Church at the moment (despite his attempts at those), so I’m not particularly confident that he’ll find a way to use his law degree to do anything other than be annoying online.

Maybe he’ll go back to school and become an MD-JD.

A lot of people go into law school saying they want to help people.  My daughter among them.  She has ended up becoming a specialist in helping people end their marriages.  It's needed work that someone is going to do.  Derick may find that he is helping people complete contracts.

The less kids you have the better you can allocate whatever little time (in his case) you have. With Jill having let’s say five kids, as each child reaches kinder age, the more one on one time she will have for the ones home. That will free time for the kids at school in the afternoon, and evenings. It’s parenting 101.

I have no idea what their current financial situation is now. It’s not a stretch to think a steady income is better than none. YMMV and that is just fine.

Oh yes I understand "parenting 101". I just didn't realize a law degree meant less children.

Absolutely true. Yes, Derick made comments either before or shortly after he started law school, about defending rights for people yada yada, and no I didn't take them as concrete career plans - either then or now.

Derick's choosing U of Arkansas Law School was a savvy move assuming he plans to stay in Arkansas. The job market may not be as dire now as it was a few years ago for newly graduated JDs, but I think there are still more of them than there are job opportunities. Derick has the home town/state thing going for him, and we know he did [pre-pandemic] summer internships between 1L and 2L. Maybe he will land (or has landed) a job with a local firm or legal department.

Do we know for sure he took the bar earlier and did not pass?  I'm wondering if he postponed the bar since he had so, so much going on in his family when it was given the first time.

Yes, he took it last July. They made a YouTube video (a Q&A IIRC) and made a big deal about how he spent his days studying. They even did a Day in the Life video. It didn't impress me. He didn't seem to get much studying in at all. No wonder he failed that time. He obviously learned his lesson.

Several of us commented that how Derick studied was not how the posters or their family members had prepared for the bar.  For instance my daughter's roommate's family and I alternated paying for meal delivery service for one meal a day for about six weeks to make sure they had a good nutritious meal for dinner and maybe leftovers for lunch without taking the time for a lot of cooking and shopping.  Those two passed the first try, but studied for three or four hours every morning, went to Barbri class or a study group in the afternoon, and then put in another three hours at night.  That was either in the library or a quiet apartment not a house with two kids playing in the next room and a clingy wife popping in.

A lot of people don’t have others to provide for them financially while they’re studying.

That's very, very true.  My point was more Derick had very little quiet time dedicated to studying while my daughter and her roommate had possibly an optimum situation which lead to fairly easy passes for both of them.  Derick's situation appeared far from optimum to me.

As a parent three weeks of dinners was much cheaper than another six months of semi-supporting her and the risk of her losing the job she had contingent on passing the bar.  :)  It seemed the motherly thing to do.

You're right. Derick was unique and lucky as a husband and dad studying for the bar, because he was 100% financially supported during this time.

I think the first time around Derick studied more than he let on in his and Jill's video. He had his locked office and the school not too far away. It obviously wasn't enough, but I don't think all his studying was done with Jill hanging over him.

It seems that even though he studied enough for the second exam, he spent plenty of time doing other things. They took a vacation, he attended the trial everyday and the went to a wedding (or two). I'm guessing he buckled down though, after the holidays this time around.

I think it was a lovely, thoughtful and practical thing to do. I’m sure it helped them to focus and study.

Congratulations to Derick for passing the Bar. This is no small accomplishment. Where he will work will depend on the first office to hire him. He can stay unemployed only for so long before the bills will need to be paid. He may have his intention as far as the area of law that he wants to practice in but it doesn't always work out that way. My former husband wanted a high-life private practice lawyer type of life..you know the big civil firms in which you make tons of money... he could only wait so long...the government hired him and he became a career assistant state prosecutor instead. He did very well IMO with his career, reputation and all but never made the bucks he thought he would. Let's see what happens with Derick. I'm glad he passed and I'm sure it's a big weight off his shoulders. I hope Jill understands what an accomplishment this is for her husband and respects his education.

I recently read on online article (British Vogue, maybe) about the harmful culture of promoting "natural childbirth". Although the writer's obstetric medical system is different than in the US, the point of the article was IMO, spot on.

I think Jill would benefit greatly from reading it.

Based on Derick's track record of mediocrity and quitting when the going got tough in his previous jobs; I'd rather he worked to take away my rights than someone who is actually motivated and competent.  So, if Derick, being a Z list celeb, is able to get a job that might have otherwise gone to someone more capable, I'm ok with that.  Just like the FF being hired by FRC back in the day.

It will definitely be interesting to see what Deertick does now in terms of employment.  I'll give him credit for passing the bar as I could never dream of even attempting such a thing but I'm still giving him the side-eye based on his nasty, hateful beliefs.

It seems he ditched the Walmart Corp accounting gig as it interfered with the Countin On fiming and his desires to be a missionary.

The Scary America missionary gig could have developed more had it not been for clingy, petrified Jill.  I'm sure there is more to why that failed, but who knows.

Watching and waiting....
