I agree Suzi. I always got the impression that Derick's work in Nepal was more of real missionary work rather than a preachy vacation. Unfortunately for him he is now in a position to be more Duggar than Derick. So he went from a path of real missionary work in Nepal to taking pictures of himself handing out donuts to homeless people. Duggar disease. You don't want to catch it.

Btw, am I the only person who had no idea who or what is a Ryan Hall?

Ryan Hall is an American marathon runner. He holds the American Record for fastest marathon time, and he's also well known for being very religious. At one point a few years ago he fired his coaching team and announced he would be training by praying for guidance on his running each day.

He has since hired a real coach.

He's married to another professional runner, Sarah Hall, and the two of them spend a great deal of time training in Africa as well as working with charitable organizations there.

Ryan Hall is a bit of an outlier in American running, and he's a bit controversial because of his constant yapping about how God guides his training. Part of the problem is that he became a bit of a punchline since he had a very bad year after that, some of which was just bad luck (pulled hamstring, etc). Despite all the jokes about him, he is very likely the best American-born male marathon runner in the USA right now. (Specifically stating American-born because Meb Keflezighi is better, IMO. He, incidentally, is also very deeply religious, but tends to be much quieter about it.)

In any case, the Dillards probably think Ryan Hall is a great example for them, but the difference is that Ryan Hall runs a legitimate charity, and it's not his only business/focus. And all flip jokes aside, he's clearly a little bit less fundie than they are, because he and his wife would never be competing at the level they do if they were worried about women exposing skin.

IIRC, Derick's mission experience in Nepal was under the SBC's International Mission Board. As you can see from exploring the IMB's website, including their "Ways to Go" information, this isn't merely "mission tourism." They do sponsor some youth/student trips, but to be a "real" missionary under the IMB, there are educational requirements and other commitments. Derick was probably in Nepal as a "journeyman" or "ISC" placement. Which seems appropriate for a recent college graduate with an interest in missionary work.

I think Derick aspired to continue with the IMB after marriage. Then, I assume, he realized that although he could complete the educational requirements to become a career missionary, Jill just wouldn't be able to. (This is no slam on her general intelligence, just that unlike Derick she hasn't earned a college degree, and would be starting way behind where he is, plus the whole being busy pumping out babies thing.) And in the case of a married couple, both of them must meet the requirements. Those requirements are on the "Ways to Serve" page under "Apprentice/Career." AFAIK you don't become a full fledged missionary under the IMB by just playing around handing out candy and doing lame skits. It's serious work and a major life commitment. (If he'd married a like-minded Southern Baptist woman with a college degree, or at least a few years of college credit, Derick and his wife might as we speak be immersed in their IMB coursework and training in preparation for their foreign assignment.)

So, no IMB career path for Derick and Jilly. Plan B turned out to be SOS and Dillard Family Ministries.

I wonder if Derick knew, before he married her, the limits of Jill's education. (Again, I'm not slamming her IQ or homeschooling in general, but just noting that the SOTDRT as operated by the Duggars isn't all that and a bag of chips when it comes to great education.)

Oh, that makes total sense. And the two career paths could hardly be more different. In fact, one could hardly be called a "career path." Or a "mission." Be careful in your marriage choices, people.

I'm still trying to get my mind around the fact that people like Derick might actually watch the show and come away with the impression that freaking Michelle ever gave anybody an "education" of any account whatsoever. She's so obviously an ignorant idiot who is terminally lazy -- for whatever reason, think it could be largely depression -- and who doesn't give a crap for kids or have a clue about how to communicate with them. Plus, she and her husband clearly believe that you can become a skilled tradesman by watching somebody do a job for half an hour. I guess they hide behind the image of many homeschooling moms doing it because they care about their kids' education and putting a lot of energy into it. But the Dugg parents aren't this way in the least. They despise and belittle any learning at all every chance they get and present as total fools themselves despite their presentations having the benefits of retakes, scripts and professional editing.

Another way the always-supervised courtship model is pure evil.

Jill hadn't even heard 'twinkle twinkle little star'. Now she's making life-or-death decisions.

I know! But somehow the Duggs got this reputation for being this fabulously well-organized homeschooling family in which all the kids were always well-behaved. I'd be shaking my head when reading comments like, "I just love how all those kids obey their parents." Because it would be clear from even casually watching the show that the Howlers kind of did their own thing, and IIRC there was even one classic shot of Mechelle impotently trying to get some of the kids (Howlers, I think) to settle down and pay attention, and they just ignored her.

I think people see what they want to see, and hear what they want to hear.

That sounds about right for what the audience has done, although, boy howdy, you sure have to be blind not to see their all-encompassing negative attitude toward learning and growing, seems to me.

Some people I know have home schooled (or unschooled), including both conservative Christian and very liberal non-Christian families, and while the atmospheres in their homes haven't been the same, the homeschooling environments and the homeschooling parents have all been as different from the Duggars as could be. You can just feel the energy and interest and the fostering of work ethic, curiosity, enjoyment of learning and doing. The parents have worked so hard to offer their kids as many good opportunities to learn as possible and you could see the kids responding to that and their various interests and talents blossoming. All the homes have books and media and supplies of all kinds all over them.

Meanwhile, the Duggar house -- and the fantastic field trips the Duggs have been able to go on, thanks to TLC -- look like an interest-free dead zone. Listless lack of interest in schooling punctuated by episodes of screaming -- but still somehow boring -- chaos. And then you see the horrible modeling JB and M do, as they subtly or unsubtly keep dissing all training, education, people and places with differences you might learn from, and on and on.

It's just tragic for those kids. But thinking that it's actually been sort of held up as a model for the nation because of the tv show is sickening.

Re: reading materials in the Duggar house; I know Michelle has babbled on about how oh so important they all find reading but I think that was just ever so much hot air. I've tried to remember what they have actually claimed or been shown to read and it's not an awful lot:

The Bible (KJV only of course)

To Train Up A Child by the evil Pearls (possibly also that deranged Helpmeet book the wife wrote)

Wisdom Booklets

Before You Meet Prince Charming

Some childrens' books about a Christian detective (only boys like this kind of books though, duh) ETA: The Reverend Spy, thanks JoanArc.

"Christian biographies"

Life on the Pond picture books

Jill's textbooks (I'm assuming that Jill had to get through a number of books on biology and midwifery at least since she managed to pass her exam).

...Aaaand that's pretty much it. Chick tracts maybe?

I suppose they could be avid readers off camera, but we never hear them talk about books or fictional characters or quote anything except the Bible so I honestly doubt it. And with the kind of literature available to them I can't really blame the kids for not finding reading to be very interesting. Nothing fun is allowed! Romance novels are emotional pornography; anything with magic or unicorns in it is a dark influence; any science book that doesn't step in line with the idea that Jesus had a pet dinosaur is an attempt by evil liberals to lure your children to the Dark Side; any novel where Daddy is depicted as less than an absolute ruler of his household or where a girl or woman show any kind of independence is part of the manhating feminist agenda. And lets not even mention those books that have *gasp* GAY characters. I'm sure there are books out there that doesn't contain any of those things, but finding them would require effort and we all know the Duggars aren't too keen on that sort of thing.

I do wonder if Derrick is a reader. He must've read some normal books as a child and young adult since he went to public high school and college. Question is if he realises how lucky he was compared to Jill's intellectually barren childhood or if he's convinced himself that anything secular was corrupting his soul and he'll be following Jill's lead when raising Izzy and his future blessings.

There is an author, Lori Wick I think, that writes romance novels where the main characters never kiss and every book ends in marriage. There also also hundreds, if not thousands of illustrated bible stories for kids. There are plenty of books that aline with their values, but it seems like Jim Bob and Michelle aren't interested, so therefore the kids aren't allowed an interest.

The Duggers could have self published books illustrated by the kids that Jill and Derrick could give away in their mission. They just have so few interests because they are too lazy for a hobby.

Oh, you have no idea. I used to work for [book publisher] when they were trying to break into textbooks, and we had to do special reading guides for the 13 states which were led by the then Texas School Board gatekeepers (who were bad enough that literally one of the first things George W. Bush did when he became Governor was force the couple running the mess to resign because he thought they were too extreme). One of the notes we got from our Texas consultant was that when Dickon, Colin and Mary talked about the magic of God making things grow and then sang the Doxology to celebrate in The Secret Garden, it was clearly satanic because magic and children shouldn't be exposed to it.

I am totally not making this up.

Dill probably didn't mean any harm, but it reminds me of that Blindside lady and the kids in the restaurant earlier this year. Don't ascribe a situation on social media and not expect people to find out about it.

Regarding the Blindside lady and the Duggars, yeah, I'd be kind of pissed off too if some sanctimonious do-gooder with a White Savior complex plastered me all over social media as some kind of charity case. Jill and Derick just need to stop already. Edited by BitterApple

I think you're on the money with this one. There's probably little that any church won't do these days if they think it'll draw in the young.

Although I'm skeptical about how many of the independent young or unaffiliated young are Jill and Derick fans. I'd think their humpers are more likely to be highly sheltered 14-year-olds who are already well ensconced in churchgoing families, so not much of a get for the church. Aside from having been on tv, I can't see J and D being awarded cool points by any other demographic.

I find this surprising -- a lot of posters here seem to think that the humpers are 14 year old girls. I always picture them as middle-aged and elderly women.

I guess that the people who follow them on Instagram or Twitter are probably younger, but I always have thought that the bulk of them -- and certainly the ones who have sent money for the "mission" -- are older/elderly.

I do think that Derick had real plans to be a real missionary before he married Jill, and I think that the big attraction was that she said she wanted to be a missionary, too. It's possible that he never really looked into the requirements for a spouse, but I think it's more likely that he thought Jill would get her undergraduate degree while he was working on his Masters.

I really don't think that Derick followed the show. He was in college and then in Nepal for the six years prior to meeting her -- I just don't think it's a "must see" for college students -- even conservative Christian students. I think he had probably heard about the show, and heard some thing about "nice Christian family," etc., and he may have watched an episode ot two here and there, but you actually do have to watch it a bit to really see how awful they really are.

I think he might also have thought that appearing on a reality TV show would be kind of fun, and he'd be able to make a little extra money to pay for school.

If all they talked about during their "courtship" was their favorite Bible verses, I think it's entirely possible the Derick didn't know that Jill has never read a book, or that she has traveled the world without gaining any knowledge, or that she probably doesn't know high-school algebra. He may well have had to scramble for a "Plan B" when he discovered that "Plan A" was completely unreachable.

I guess I get the 14-year-old girl thing from some of the social media comments I see. ... But I'm sure you're right that there are probably older women (like moms and grandmas of the young teens who may be on social media?) too. But they probably aren't leaving instagram comments. .... Of course, they're not going to help to boost a church congregation's numbers either, since they're probably already members. So -- older and very young women but nobody in the cool-point-awarding area or Cross Church's most coveted demographics, I would expect.

Actually, I"m not sure this couple does. There is no policing of comments on their social media like there is with Duggarfam, and of course, patrolling-the-internet-all-day Benessa.

Always dangerous to try to determine age of poster based on spelling, etc... lol.

I don't think droves of 14-year-old leghumpers necessarily make sense either.  Maybe, other sheltered/repressed fundie kids, but I question if some of those same-boat kids would be allowed to watch a TV show, and to the non-sheltered, I think they would just come off as terminally uncool.  Teens in my experience like flash, glitz, daring and risk, which is why I question the effectiveness of this overall Duggar teaching method on and for the Future Wives (and Husbands) of America.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I do think there are a lot of very sheltering families that have let their kids watch the Duggars, though -- generally on dvds rather than on tv, perhaps -- when they don't let them watch other show.s ... And, if you're sheltered enough, you may not really know that flash and glitz, particularly, even exist. I really didn't. I knew more about daring and risk because I went to school and therefore read literature and history. But I couldn't develop a taste for the cool, hip and sophisticated because I was unexposed to it as much as my family could manage. i realize there aren't tons of families like that, and it's certainly much harder to do it today, but I'm pretty sure there are still some of these. I actually know a couple myself. Their teenage kids seem very very young in the whole how-you-present-yourself way, compared to other kids their age, just the way I did.

It's so weird how being in the public spotlight changes people.  They all seem so desperate for attention.  I get it with the Duggars, they've courted the public for ages, the kids grew up in it.  But the really interesting thing is how quickly Derrick and Ben have been assimilated.  It's well-known that JB has controlled every aspect of his family's life, so I wonder if one thing he was looking for was that fame-whore quality.  It's like his check list of acceptable mates for his kids was the willingness to be filmed at any time and under any circumstances.

Even Anna, who married Josh very early on and spent most of her time in front of the cameras desperately looking to Josh for cues as to how to respond to the cameras intrusion, still consented to having all of her deliveries filmed.  Michelle didn't do that, and neither did Jill.  Jill may claim that she'd have had her delivery filmed except for the emergency C-section, but she was in labor for two days before she finally went to the hospital, but she didn't have a camera following her every step of the way.

The spouses of the Duggar kids are second tier.  They didn't get born into the family, so when things "really get real!", they're filmed in their most private moments.  Except for Jason.  When he fell into the orchastra pit at that mega church and was badly injured, Michelle happily filmed a talking head about how they managed without TLC camera's around.  She said that several of the family members got themselves lowered into the pit and used their cell phones to illuminate the situation while filming it.  And a couple of the older kids who were trained as first-responders checked out the situation and called 911.

Then there's the awsome footage of Jason being wheeled into the ER while Michelle walks proudly beside him and smiles and waves to the camera.

Michelle had most of her births filmed that took place during the series. There may have been a reason the doctors didn't want her c-section with Josie filmed, but I don't remember hearing of Mechelle refusing to let them film a birth.

As for Jill, first of all they tried to cram four or five months (after the gender reveal and Jessa's wedding) into two hours, and then they probably cut a lot. I'm not convinced that footage doesn't exist of Jill in labor doesn't exist and just wasn't shown either for reasons I'll leave others to contemplate.

TLC and Discovery and Discovery Health Channel filmed lots and lots of births and had whole shows devoted to this. I don't think it's particularly anything that Anna let them film her in labor.

Yeah, it seems like they are grifters who would welcome the attention. They even added where they would be (with a broken vehicle) if people wanted to stop by :) Seems we don't need to worry that they would be exploited. The fact that they weren't subjected to the airdance is a plus. Oh and donuts. Win for them, win for the Dullards in this case.

Lots of people. I knew a woman from an internet forum who decided to bicycle first across the country, then around the world on other peoples money.

She constantly talked of her disdain of people who weren't willing to live an adventurous life, yet took money from people who obviously work for a living.

They used their homely little blonde sons to grift and score free food, free lodging and money. This went on years.    The kids were sick a lot, hungry and put in very dangerous situations too many times to mention.

Who the fuck travels by begging anyway? They sound like complete burdens on society. How can people with smartphones and the Internet access necessary to have an Instagram account shamelessly beg for food with "I'm hungry" signs?

As BitterApples said "Jill and Derrick" (quote didn't work)

Duggars? They are like grifting Matryoshka dolls.

Managing Anger God's Way. Did the Dullards drop off the religious tracks along with the nourishing doughnuts?

And one of pamphlets is about "Managing Anger God's Way." Do they think that there's an epidemic of anger issues among the homeless or that anger problems lead to homelessness? That just seems like a kind of random topic of a pamphlet to give to people who are food insecure, homeless, etc. (yeah, I know these people aren't homeless but are travelers or whatever, but I'm assuming Jill & Derrick wouldn't think it would be a random topic for the homeless to read about)

I said this in the Benessa thread, but I would actually be curious to see Jills midwifery work in El Salvador.

See if she has better judgement with other women than she had for herself

Also think she is pregnant and I would bet 1000 dollars that she flies to the US to have her baby.

EDIT: Not that I think she Shouldn't, but she can't preach irresponsible breeding/ no birth control in a third world country if she herself wouldn't give birth there.

If she gives birth in el salvador, then she would not be a hypocrit.

TLC will never show Jill involved with a birth gone wrong.
