The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

I have my money to worry about (but I don't).  The Duggars can do what they want but I'd believe TLC saw to it there were some sort of accounts for them.  The youngest Roloff kid is a self-proclaimed satanist, anti-education, anti-work, anti-social.  All this is self proclaimed.  I think he may simply believe for some reason he is worth a lot more than he got.  JMO.  He's of age now.  Maybe he can pick up some bucks for photos while he bitches in magazines.  He didn't want any part of the show.  Yes, I know the complaints of Amy saying the kids were gone when the youngest was still at home, but he sure was different, and not there often.  His life, he'll get along.

I found an academic paper about paying kids in reality TV where Jim Bob was quoted as saying that the kids were being filmed doing what they would ordinarily have been doing, and thus weren't being paid anything. That exemption, though, goes away when you turn 18, so I'm going to guess that one of the ways Jim Bob enabled Josh to support a wife was by getting TLC to pay for Josh.

Citation, please. Link above doesn't work. Edited by CofCinci

And that's why I feel sorry for Jacob Roloff. The kid was forced to have his childhood pimped out on a reality show. He had no other options as a 9-year-old. Not only that, but he had to go through the very awkward adolescent years on camera. If Matt and Amy had been good parents, they would have scrapped the show when it was obvious that it was screwing with their youngest son (or at the very least make it so that he didn't have to appear on camera... for the longest time, I didn't know that the Osbournes, I think it was the Osbournes, had another kid because she chose not to appear on their reality show). Jacob's entitled to his bitching, IMO. The Roloffs were awful parents. Not as bad as the Duggars, but they're yet another family that makes me grateful for my own family.

And I think Jacob comes across really well on his twitter and much more thoughtful/aware than Jeremy and Zach did at his age.

ETA: To give the Roloffs some credit, I'm glad that Jacob at least feels like he can be open about his feelings toward the show without jeopardizing his relationship with his family. I can only imagine how Jim Bob and Michelle would react if Jana said something.

I stopped watching the Roloff family when Jacob was impaled by (drunken) Matt's trebuchet. The kid suffered severe head trauma and the family kept filming. The most traumatic experience of Jacob's life is a YouTube clip. I'm sure he didn't agree to the footage being shown, which reminds me of how the Duggars exploit Josie's medical issues.

I've Googled and Googled and I can't find anything like this. None of the links (two, I think) on this site work. Could you please point me in the direction of this academic paper? Thank you so much.

That, and it's clear that he was always closer to their family friend Mike, who was also injured and died about two years later and hasn't been the same since.  I'm sure his mother treating him like an afterthought doesn't help.

That said, I think we're going to have to wait until one of the kids has enough of the horse and pony show and tells all.  Hopefully, we'll still remember who these people are/were when it happens.

Oh, Famy. You have no shame.

She's of course looking forward to seeing herself in the dress and having that first post-vow kiss, but what Amy's most excited about is the paperwork. "I can't wait to change my name!" she says. "It's going to be a great day when Dillon signs that marriage license and my last name changes. You have no idea!"

Am I mistaken, or wasn't Amy raised with her father's name and only changed it when she decided to become a celebrity?

Or the Duggarling who fell into an orchestra pit and was screaming bloody murder while Jill just played her harp and no one bothered to find the source of the screaming - cut to Michelle grinning like an idiot recording her kid on a stretcher as he was rushed to the hospital.

It was an academic paper written by Ariel Tacher, a law student at Pennsylvania State University called "The Real World: Child Labor and Reality Television, " if that helps.

The footnote quoted JB as basically saying that the family was being filmed doing what they were normally doing with or without cameras there (snort!?), so the children did not need to be paid as child performers.

From what I can tell, Amy has always been a Duggar. She has a car list under Amy Duggar. Pickles and Hairspray said she has always been a Duggar. It seems the whole Amy Jordyn was just a name she used for the album.

PS. Off topic, but Jacob Roloff was always a afterthought in my opinion. He won the award for least favorite child. I can't blame him for his attitude he is display. I hope he can come to terms with how he was raised.

In fairness to Amy (I know), I have a friend getting married next month, and the other day she texted me "so soon, I can't wait to change my name!" Not because she's looking forward to losing her own family name, but because she's looking forward to sharing a name with her husband. It really could be as simple as that.

Very true. If it is that simple, though, it was still pretty unintentionally hilarious.

Jill didn't just play her harp.

She was the only one who went and rescued Justin (?) and treated him.

So apparently Famy's fiancé actually spoke to InTouch Weekly. The serial drunk driver can't understand what Josh was thinking.

Why in the world would you speak to the magazine that toppled your future in-laws' family's empire?! Hell of a way to (1) Be a dick to Anna, who he likely barely knows but his fiancée claims to care about, (2) Make your future in-laws' family hate you, and (3) Add even more family awkwardness to your own wedding day in the midst of this Josh business.

He seemed pissed that his 15 minutes of fame on the show never happened. I'm reducing my estimated end date for this marriage from 2 and 1/2 years to 1 and 3/4 years.

I'm guessing many of the Duggars have found some type of urgent appointment elsewhere for the big day, especially since they have no control over press coverage (like there won't be any; the media will be there with bells on to get unauthorized photos and hopefully a "story") and no say on the guest list, which will probably be full of those who will make even more nasty and uncalled-for comments, especially after copious amounts of alcohol/other substances.

Ok, well now you've made it sound like a party! How do I get an invitation? :-)

Well, we have to remember that this is a man with two drunk driving arrests. Don't think judgment is his long suit. (although he does seem to have some aspirations when it comes to being judgy....)

Jessa's "break" with the family is so far very mild, just linking to a blog rant by her Father in Law but referring to it as "The Ashley Madison Scandal" was definitely disassociating herself with this. I actually do feel sorry for Jessa. She's pregnant is an added strain anyway, in the last few months she has seen her family's (hopefully darkest) splashed across the internet, had to go on TV to defend her molester *and get the Duggar shows back* and whilst I believe she really wanted the show to continue or a spin off, it' pretty horrible to realise your abuse has given your family's detractors ammunition.

Whilst no one is entitled to a reality show or should consider it their right, up until 3 months ago Jessa could reasonably expect a special and People cover focusing on her being awesome and doing her big duty of producing her first arrow for her quiver (just as Jill got) she has suddenly had that yanked out from under her by a revelation which however she really feels about it, she probably hoped would never go public.

And she has a useless husband and they both counted on the gravy train continuing for a while yet. But go for it. Go for Josh if that's how you feel. Even if you don't intend you might get a few of your siblings out.

Mark Morford makes an interesting argument for why pinning the "addiction" label on Josh's porniness and horniness may be just another Christian Right ploy to blame all of men's problems on women

http://blog.sfgate.com/morford/2015/09/04/sex-addiction-does-not-exist/?cmpid=NLmorford

"Look at it this way: If you truly believe sex, or porn, or masturbation – all just shorthand, by the way, for “women’s sexuality,” given how it’s almost always men who claim addiction – are truly dangerous, if you really believe that enjoying such things can result in a genuine medical condition bordering on psychosis, it’s no leap at all to demand that those forces – i.e.; women – be curtailed, shut down, defunded, the “drug” of their sexuality restricted and made forbidden, lest dumb, powerless, God-fearing men go “insane” with uncontrollable lust and… well, you know the rest.

"Right? It’s the same revolting message across the planet and since times biblical: Women’s sexuality is pure sin, a poison of devilish origin, the Serpent in disguise. If an innocent Christian – like poor little Josh Duggar – is “addicted” to sex, guess who’s to really to blame for enflaming and engorging his desires?"

Excuse me, don't all the little arrows belong to the headship? I believe that's Ben's quiver that the Baby-BamBam arrow goes into. (Or, really, Jim Bob's.)

I just have issues with it. There are plenty of people who provide for themselves and their children by going out and working those three jobs for one more day, or by growing a truck garden, or by going to food banks when the money runs out. Some folks go to school while they're young and learn a marketable skill. Some folks even show a little continence and wait until they're established and able to support children before they start having them. Most of them didn't sell the rights to their wedding to multiple venues.

Seems to me like this is a great time for Jessa to start living her faith. Which is to say, quit asking for handouts, and let her 'headship' go out and get whatever job he's qualified for and start supporting his family. And if they find they aren't willing to live on anything their skills or their education can afford them, they'll hardly be the oldest students at the community college.

Oops you're right. But can it not even be *their* quiver? (In Gothardism)

Eh, too bad so sad.

You don't have to feel sorry for her but personally but as I said, she was an abuse target and had the world pulled out from her again by it and it cancelled her only source of income (whilst she is pregnant however ill advised that is).

Now having no marketable skills and marrying a teenager just the same is stupid, but yeah they got shafted on their Jim Boob approved business plan, go figure. So (to bring it around to media) Jessa, please post all the snark you want. It probably won't get you a TLC special but it might get you a spread in People if you are lucky.

According to the article, they went to see the movie War Room.  Never heard of it.  It's Evangelical.

SYNOPSIS: Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all-great jobs, a beautiful daughter, and their dream house. But appearances can be deceiving. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan's world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success and flirts with temptation, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, and is challenged to establish a "war room" and a battle plan of prayer for her family. As Elizabeth tries to fight for her family, Tony's hidden struggles come to light. Tony must decide if he will make amends to his family and prove Miss Clara's wisdom that victories don't come by accident.

"War room." Brought to you by the same people who made "Fireproof," the evangelical Kendrick brothers. There really seems to be an appeal for literally fighting for a marriage, kind of like the same appeal for the starry eyed damsel being rescued by the fairy tale prince charming. However, in the Real World, some people aren't meant to be together after all, despite all the "fighting," praying, counseling, etc. And there's NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. But we all know there's a segment of fundie women who will forever be tied to their failed princes, while all those around them insist on them being prayer warriors in a "War Room" and making their marriages "Fireproof." Sad, tragic fantasies.

This reminds me of a play I saw in NYC in th 80's. A roommate had joined something called, I think "Power for Abundent Living". I tell you the only ones living "abundently" were those running this church since they took 20 percent of every members salary. I would be woken up to her alone in the kitchen "speaking in tongues". I don't think that is how it works but when she did something she dived in with her whole being. Well anyway, she dragged me to this play that was about this couple. The guy was a dick and the girl was meek and sweet. Troubled marriage. So anyway they start some type of counseling and guess what? The guy was't a dick, he was possessed by satan!!! At this point I could no longer contain myself and mumbled "Jesus Christ!" Not to be reverent, I was full on taking the lord's name in vain because, satan? WTF!!!! Well the folks sitting around me thought I was filled with the Holy Ghost or something and that got them all going. Praise Jesus! Hallelujah 'ing filled the room. Thankfully the roommate discovered cocaine (it was the 80's) and all that abundently promised cash went up her nose. I would awaken in the mornings to hear her arguing with her drug dealer, but that is another story........

This may be off topic, so mods please move it if it is.  TLC is ramping up their new season with no Duggars in sight.  Fame is always fleeting.  Unless a new Josh scandal crops up (and my money is on the very real possibility) how much longer will In Touch etc. care.  Right now they must be selling magazines, but soon the Sister Wives, or one of the other TLC people, will do something stupid.  Jessa will have her baby and then what. It should be interesting to see how all this plays out.  People will be on to other things pretty soon.  The speaking engagements will dry up and very few people will care what the Duggars are up too.  I would like to think they are addressing these issues now, but I sincerely doubt it.  The clock is ticking pretty loudly at this point for the Duggars.

Uneducated media famewhoring is not a long term career.  Maybe this should be in the Jessa thread.  LOL

Someone made a movie about Josh and Anna?

Us has a report up about the Duggars going to church for the porn sermon. I thought they had their own basement church? Isn't the house designated a non-profit so they don't have to pay taxes or something?

Contrary to the perky reporting the comments are firmly anti-Duggar. And one person says he/she has been getting their information from here. Hee!
