What would you all classify Robyns style evolution? I know this has been a span of 10+ years, but….the difference is so weird.  She went from primarily t-shirt and jeans to matronly polyester.  With bell sleeves. BELL SLEEVES! Lol. I think she’s too young to wear these clothes.

WhatAmIWatching's post from the kids' thread:

But the Closet really could have been viable! They just didn't know what they were doing, and made their offerings too narrow. Add in the cheap trinkets that they overpriced like fine jewelry; not updating often enough; not securing the site well, among many other mistakes, and it ended up a big mess. I still laugh remembering when the site got hacked and redirected to porn! classic.

They had a lot of eyes on them, and that could have translated into sales if only they'd spent a little, and got sound advice on how to market, what to market etc, or even an outside entirety running it, it would have served them well.

As I said, you're spot on, and I would like to add one thing: IIRC, Robyn designed most of the items herself. She should have hired a good jewellery designer who would have been able to translate her ideas into viable and beautiful designs that appealed to a wider public. Heck, my 10-year-old could have made some of those designs!

Thank you for bringing it here! I'm sorry, I've got to pay better attention to which thread I'm posting in.

Oh that's right, Robyn fancied herself as a jewelry designer, I forgot about that part. Though it did seem like her later stuff was just charms bought from Ali Express or something, and marked up 1000%.

I remember cringing that she didn't do any research, or pick the brains of actual experts before just diving in, as if there was just pots of money to flush away without a second thought.   What a waste.

Just finished a bunch of old episodes where they were trying to get the LV houses. If there’s anything that still baffles me, it’s how Robyn was able to get that huge mortgage as a (technically) single mum with no real job who also had a pretty disastrous financial past. (My friend, who is a single mum with a pretty good job struggled to get 290k financed…)

At that time, Sister Wives was still a pretty big thing I think, but don’t forget that a fat TLC check needed to be divided amongst 5 adults…would that have been enough to secure the houses and get over that disastrous financial past?

You know there was no way Robyn/Kody were going to let Christine reap any profit from the sale of her house! These people are reprehensible!

Confession....

You know...for a long time I 'quite' liked Robyn and wasn't sure why she got so much hate. I thought she was caring and compassionate and grateful for being part of this family that meant so much to her. It started to wean off after that ridiculous part where Kody divorced Meri to legally marry her so he could adopt her children (which I still don't buy)

But the day I watched the episode where she cried because God wasn't given her a rennal and forced her to live in that horrible McMansion... The poor, poor girl, that's when she turned into Sobbin' Robyn to me too. And with one homeless SW, one SW in a rennal who never gets to see her hubby and one SW in an RV while she still lives in that stunning house and has it all, I have to admit: the person who came up with the dark queen on her throne was spot on!

Totally agree...I pretty much felt the same way you did, that she wasn't so bad, and then began to see her calculating ways during the divorce/marriage shuffle.

However, I still don't dislike her as much as some people seem to. It's hard for me to say who I "like" more than any other, because I just can't stand any of them.

I think any of these 4 women would step on each other, greedily grab the most for themselves, and live in that big house on the hill while others went without, if they were able to magically become the apple of Kody's eye.

Robyn's just playing the game better than the others.

Meri did the same thing herself for many years, it's just that back then, there wasn't much money to go around. But she grabbed the lion's share for herself whenever she could.

And the other two nitwits, well, they couldn't quite get to the top of the heap, but you can bet they made their own power plays wherever possible, not to mention a ton of passive/aggressive remarks about how hard it was to have sooo many children, lest Meri forget how fertile they were...

And the bit about how Robyn was dating Kody while Christine was pregnant with Truely? Yeah, it was pretty gross, but how is it worse than Christine dating him when Janelle was heavily pregnant with Logan? And Meri was wondering if she'd ever get to have a child, and dealing with Janelle bringing the first child into the family...while Christine chased her husband.

The Dark Queen is indeed calculating and manipulative, but no more so than the people around her, if you ask me. She'd be a fool to not look out for #1 in this viper pit of a family.

Like I said, I can't stand any of them, but if anything I'd have to say I have a bit of grudging respect for Robyn. She's playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

From the start, Robyn had her slightly younger age work in her favor. The edge she had was her uterus, and that's what she uses to keep Grody in line.

I don't doubt J and C got points for their spirit babies, but it appalls me that this is how these women measure their self worth. And that it's used by the women to barter, cajole, and manipulate. To hurt each other.

From watching the show, I  see Robyn doing that more than the others. She uses the youngest children like she's holding them for ransom. Excrable. I wonder if the kids miss Mindy the Au Pair.

For me, my hackles went up with the famous scene of Kody declaring he "had a bomb to drop" announcing that he had picked the wedding dress for Robyn. Secretly, behind all of their backs.  When Robyn said that she didn't thing anyone needed to know that she was on my radar.  Secrets are not something you want to have going into a marriage, and certainly not a plural marriage with 3 well settled wives and 12/13 children.

Yep - this is when I really started to side-eye Robyn as well. On rewatch, however, I side-eyed her from the beginning and realized how frickin' stealth she was the entire time.

This is all true.  She walked into an already dysfunctional fambly with an idiotic man-child as its leader and probably thought - oh, yes.  Yes indeed.  I can drive the wedges in between these women even deeper than they already are, and I can get this slobbering dork to do whatever I tell him to do.  I can use my kids as bargaining chips and my skinny bod and fertile womb as a carrot in front of that Ramen-headed donkey and all of this sweet TLC money will be mine.

What blows my mind is that the Big Three sat there, open-mouthed, and not only let it all happen, but they took their anger out on each other rather than The Dark Queen herself.

Oh man - on rewatch, you rilly do see her master plan come to fruition, step by evil step.  I still say it's chilling.  She played every Brown adult like a fiddle.  Gotta give her reluctant credit for keeping all of those balls in the air, so to speak.

This scene absolutely "outed" Robyn to a lot of viewers who may have given her the benefit of the doubt up to that point.

I think it's important to remember Kody's involvement in all of this too, though. Without him going along with it, Robyn can't do any of this sneaking about.

He should have said no, we don't make out during courtship, not in this family. To me, that's way more his fault than hers...did she know that was what the other wives expected? Perhaps, perhaps not, but HE definitely knew!

I also thought that during the dress incident, he was even worse than Robyn. I'm not saying she was right. It was wrong of her to hide that information, but Kody couldn't wait to share that info, like a ridiculously excited jackass. If no one had ever known Kody picked the dress, who would it have hurt?

I recently re-watched that scene. It's not just that he told them all that he picked the dress - it's the way he says it. He tells his own wives that it's like he'd "seen this dress in his dreams", in a very animated, teenage boy in love kind of way. It's nauseating.

Similarly, there's a scene also in Season 1 of a birthday party for Robyn, and this scene shows her opening a gift from Meri. Kody has to shove his face in front of the camera and declare "I'm not the ONLY one in love with Robyn!", to which Meri gives a weak smile and looks like she wants to vomit. (To say something that insensitive pretty much cemented my opinion of Kody.)

I think there are a lot of times when Stealth Robyn wishes she had a better partner in crime! He's unbelievably obtuse. Nothing stealth about him, he's been right in our faces since the very beginning about his blatant favoritism.

I wonder if TLC helped get the houses so they’d have that perfect little culdesac to film the family in… it’s widely known that TLC helped the Duggar’s of “19 kids and counting” build their big house and get settled so the show could go on.

Could well be. When they were spread out across LV it would have been hard for TLC & all their staff & vehicles to track Kootie running from house to house like a chicken with his head cut off.

True, I doubt 4 houses scattered across town would make for fun storylines: with 4 adults and 16 kids (at the time) living together, chances for interesting stuff like incidents or major conflicts increase. And the filming is a lot easier too.

On the wedding dress thing: I understand Kody's excitement! Meri's dress was very old-fashioned and both Janelle and Christine looked absolutely ridiculous on their wedding days (I'm so sorry J and C but it is true...)  I'm sure Kody thought "this is not happening to me again!" Of the four, Robyn's dress was the best by far.

It's a way of life for them and started long before they had a show.  Rotating bankruptcies, MLM's,  food stamps a as single mom (and they bragged that they all shopped from Christine's pantry), anything they can think of to beat the system.  The "system" being ordinary, tax-paying citizens that don't have more kids than they can comfortably afford.

exactly! It's their bragging on how they abuse the system that annoys me the most.

It also baffles me that there are still people who doubt the Browns' financial situation; who somehow believe that they are (quite) wealthy. It's all over the internet and a lot of those claims can easily be proved such as bankruptcies and files such as deeds that are on public record..

Isn't single mom welfare a common polygamist tactic? I wouldn't be surprised if the kids were all on Medicaid at some point too. Even if polygamist marriage were legal, they wouldn't do it, because it would prevent them from being able to commit welfare fraud.

I doubt Robyn is worried...I'm sure that any day now, the website for MSWC is going to be up and running with all sorts of cool new jool'ry for sale at reasonable prices and pretty soon, she'll be able to pay off that pesky VS credit card that's been following her around for a decade and maybe even take care of those silly overdue tax bills.

Robyn's got this, yo.  She didn't give herself the nickname "She-Ra" for nothing.

Precisely why they worked so hard to have polygamy decriminalized rather than legalized a few years ago.  If legal to marry more than one person at a time, there would be a paper trail of responsibility.

For me, it wasn’t what Robyn did to the sister wives or how she behaved with Kody that showed her true colors.  It was when she eviscerated her older children’s’ father, as if he were a criminal on air.  Her attempts to erase him from the children’s’ mind, life and memory was a truly cruel thing.  It’s not right, even for imperfect fathers.  Adults like Kody, Meri, Christine and Janelle can take care of themselves, but the children were at her mercy and were not treated fairly in that ordeal, imo.  Things like that can cause repercussions for a lifetime.  The improper treatment of kids is something that I don’t take lightly.

Oh man you’re right! I remember that too, and waiting fir him to come out and speak about it. She was merciless.

While all of this may be true, she does not owe Kody and Robyn one dime from money that may be hers. That is what I was saying. And she is like a lot of other women who are beat down by a man and feel that they have no recourse but to stay. So I give her a little sympathy. She is not the first woman who stays with a creep. And she did have the guts to get her daughter the surgery that she needed despite what Kody wanted her to do. So yeah while she does not win mother of the year she is far and away a better parent than Kody and Robyn
