cooksdelight June 27, 2015 Share June 27, 2015 The Finalists are split into teams of three, tasked with creating and presenting a cohesive menu to a crowd of hungry families at a 4th of July cookout. Guest judge Bobby Deen joins Giada De Laurentiis and Bobby Flay to determine which team is safe, and which Finalist will be sent home. Link to comment

cooksdelight June 29, 2015 Author Share June 29, 2015 The Dial of Doom is back!!! Yes!!! And tokens! Giada was dressed like a pre-teen who wants to attract a high school guy with that tiny bright red skirt. Dom.... just walk off the stage because you don't want to be there. Alex, nobody gives a shit about your wordy Japanese food, especially Eddie. "They're not here to wait in a line. It's not a petting zoo." -- Arnold Dom needs to get over the lost ribeye. Or the camera person needs to get off his face every time the word is mentioned. He deserved to go based on walking off like he just didn't give a damn. No one wants to hire someone to host a show if he cannot hang with it until the end. But Giada loves him, so....... he's her Luca of this season. I don't mind Rosa leaving because she's as loud as Jay, but I don't think she should go instead of Dom. Dom just doesn't connect with the camera, and that's what being a food star is about. 12 Link to comment
leighdear June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 They need to just give Arnold a show and be done with it. He's my fave and I really hope he doesn't flame out. I would absolutely watch him. He needs to make his focus "fashionable" food, and throw some style tips at the end. I just wish his shrimp had been better. Alex can go. He has no personality, no spark and nothing engaging. No way I would ever watch him. He lucked out with a good sandwich. I understand Michelle not cooking her chicken the day before, but why didn't she make up all the kabobs so they could go directly on the grill before the picnic? I'm done with Rue too, I just don't like her. Just because she's the South African cook doesn't mean it's enough for her to have a show. Everything she's done sounds like it could be Caribbean. Don is sadly a dud. Sweet guy, but not for TV. I just don't think he can get where he needs to be fast enough. And Jay? Okra & tomatoes is the most basic, brainless and generic Southern food ever. No skill, no imagination and no uniqueness. And steak. Whoopie. 4 Link to comment
roseslg June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 That was predictable. They seem to be getting rid of the worst cooks first... Emilia will probably be next. She hasn't been really outstanding in anything so far. 1 Link to comment
smiley13 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 I am okay with Rosa leaving, but really wish that it had been Michelle. At least Emilia was not subjected to being at the bottom again. G-Ahda looked ridiculous in the mini skirt. Seriously? Did she buy that in the children's department?? Jay was back on his game, but Eddie had another off week. How did Arnold undercook his shrimp? Shrimp cook very quickly. it is a shame that he avoided elimination once again.. 1 Link to comment

xaxat June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 Canned goods you can put back on the shelf. Paper towels you can put back on the shelf. Freshly butchered meat. . . ? At first I was surprised that Giada wore a relatively conservative top. Then I saw the skirt. She really needs to dial her smile down to ten. Those choppers remind me of one of those dental models they use in anatomy class. Rue looked gorgeous at the elimination. If Dom's penchant for walking off the set isn't a clear indicator of him not wanting to be on the stage, then I don't know what is. The judges should put him out of his misery. 8 Link to comment
vibeology June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 Between the miniskirt at the beginning and the "boob window" dress at the end, Giada was clearly in a much hotter bubble than everyone else. Glad to see Rosa go. I was never a fan. Dom was a disaster on stage and Alex was even worse. I hate the way the judges are so dismissive of international cuisine but at the same time I don't need to know every spice and sauce that goes into my meal. He was so boring. Clanstarling June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 (edited) With Bobby and Giada hammering away at the "food authority" bit, it was astonishing to that they rather loudly claimed, more than once, that they couldn't pronounce chicken katsu. (I forget the last word, but it also wasn't hard to pronounce) Seriously? Giada's from the west coast where katsu is pretty standard Japanese fare, and Bobby's an iron chef. Whether or not they faked their cluelessness, they just lost a lot of their food authority with me. If Dom's penchant for walking off the set isn't a clear indicator of him not wanting to be on the stage, then I don't know what is. The judges should put him out of his misery. I agree. I think walking off the stage should be an automatic out. And I like Dom. KBS1607 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 (edited) Boy, this episode was full of questionable fashion choices. You had to worry about seeing Giada's hoo ha, then there were boobs on parade. Snarklepuss June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 (edited) If I had to choose between Rosa and Michelle to go home, I would have chosen Michelle. Sorry to see Rosa go. I still like Dom and think Giada's being hard on him as he seems to be doing pretty well for someone who obviously doesn't have much on-camera experience. He's actually very engaging and "relatable" in the talking heads. Not every food star needs to be great in front of huge audiences, IMO. If that were the case Melissa D'Arabian should never have won. I think Dom's faults aren't terminal ones. He could be improved by a mile with just a little training. I think he more than makes up for his camera-shyness with his genuine personality. I am just so tired of the fakey fake personalities they tend to love on this channel. And speaking of Dom, I don't agree with Giada that his running off the stage means that he can't wait to get off of it. I think he's just nervous and needs to learn to calm down. I understand the issue having once suffered from stage fright in my life. I think Giada is misinterpreting his body language. Arnold bugs me no end, not sure why he got out of jail free. Jay is beginning to bug me as well. Not a fan. Sandwich Clone guy has no personality if you ask me. I don't see why they aren't all over him about his on-camera presence, because IMO it sucks. And I totally agree about Giada's fashion choices. Stacy London would give her a piece of her mind about the short skirts. Edited June 29, 2015 by Snarklepuss 5 Link to comment
Commando Cody June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 That short skirt made Giada look like a cheerleader and those keyhole dresses just scream "Look at my boobs!". They're worse than just low cleavage because it's like it creates a focal point and you just can't help but stare. It was kind of distracting - and not in a good way. More like Giada is really on the prowl kind of way. The lady with the chicken thighs wasted time trying to break the chicken up. I thought the Stepford wife was the one who asked for thighs in the grocery store, but I must have heard her wrong considering she was the one who ended up with them. I watched the episode again and I still didn't figure out who bought them to begin with or what the original plan for them was. Michelle should have gone home. I liked Linda Belcher. Link to comment
phoenix780 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 I liked Rosa, too. We share a birth date so she has to be awesome. Oh well- truth is I probably won't remember her in a few weeks. I didn't get the twist of switching ingredients, or not letting them plan a meal, though I guess it preps them for appearing on Cutthroat Kitchen All-Stars or whatever. I'm also not 100% behind the in-person dials and presenting to a crowd challenges. To me a crowd is different than a camera- you can feed off of them, or you can get intimidated in ways you might not have happen when it's you, a crew, and some cameras. Same with watching and assessing performances. I love high energy in person to a point; can't stand it on television, at least not with the style of cooking shows FN has where it's a lot of close camera work that makes projecting too much come off as fake, imho. Last little bit of bitching: This new sandwich guy (is old sandwich guy demanding too much money or something?). Was it just my ears, or was he mispronouncing "Tokyo?" I couldn't get behind his attempt to show off international sandwich knowledge when it seemed like he wasn't saying the name of the city as an, um, authority would. Link to comment
HappyDancex2 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 Dom seems to have an unholy obsession with rib eye. Is that the only thing he can cook proficiently on a Thursday? He's actually very engaging and "relatable" in the talking heads. Not every food star needs to be great in front of huge audiences, IMO. If that were the case Melissa D'Arabian should never have won. Nor would Giada ever have had her own show to begin with, if we're to believe her backstory. She wasn't all that engaging when she started out, and perhaps that's why she's a little soft on Dom (as well as Luca). I do think she genuinely likes Dom -- as do I -- but perhaps her own path to becoming a Food Network fixture plays into her approach with him. I can't believe I'm defending Giada :P Anyway, Sandwich Boy and Emilia can go any day now. I used to be "eh" on Sandwich Boy, but his inattentiveness to the time limitations set me over the edge. Emilia has bugged since episode 1. With my luck, this means she'll make it to the end. (I don't think she'd win, though.) I still can take or leave the rest of them, but I favor Eddie or Arnold to win. 1 Link to comment

Still kills me how they do not mention Jeff Mauro at all, guess he won't be showing up as a guest mentor this season... He should just go with Giada's suggestion about making "international accessible" or whatever. Same thing with Eddie and Jay--their Southern concept is very Neely's. And the same with Emilia and her spices--that was all Jeffrey Saad's stuff. The only one of that bunch who I like and would actually enjoy watching is Arnold. Eddie is good looking and seems like a nice guy but I don't find him very interesting. Jay is OK but a bit too impressed with himself and too loud. Dom got all bent out of shape about the steaks to the point of acting like a petulant juvenile. I've lost interest in him. The camera work/editing of Emilia working on her chicken thighs was making me nuts. In the first shot, she was bare-handed. The camera panned away and, when it came back, she was wearing gloves. Then the camera left her again and came back and she was wearing one glove. She must have prepared a lot of chicken for that shoot. 3 Link to comment
bluepiano June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 (edited) As soon as Rosa said in her talking head "where's my protein" I knew she was gone. Would things have been different if she got the rib eyes and Jay was actually challenged by having to cook the Portobellos instead of getting to grill meat. Yet again. What I don't like about the big alpha male contestants on this show is that they generally ride roughshod over their teammates. Especially the women. As soon as they discovered their team had the rib eyes, Jay immediately took possession of them. There was never any question. What if Rosa said that she wanted to do an Italian rib eye? But clearly neither of the women was going to challenge the big bull moose. I think this show never knew what to make of Rosa. Pretty much all female FNS contestants have fallen into a few standard types - the Mom, the cute and perky gal, even the ice princess. But Rosa was different, and I liked her quirky personality. (She reminded me of the actress Mercedes Ruehl in "The Fisher King."). I would much rather have seen her stay than Michelle, who will continue to be totally predictable, in both her food and her "stories." Clearly the judges apply different standards, depending on the contestant. Rosa's proportions being off between mushroom and bread translates into lack of food authority. But Michelle serves raw chicken, the ultimate no-no in terms of health risks, and it's just "you've got to be more consistent." Agree with an earlier poster that Bobby and Giada acting like they'd never heard of chicken katsu was ridiculous. I feel like they're dumbing themselves down for the sake of the audience. Which shows you what they think of the average FN viewer. Edited June 29, 2015 by bluepiano 9 Link to comment

Christina June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 What three words best describe how you're feeling right now? Rosa Graziano: Relief, sadness and a heightened sense of insecurity What was your initial reaction to hearing that you were being sent home tonight? RG: A sense of relief that I don’t have to do another crazy game-show-style challenge! I was really starting to have anxiety around doing the timed challenges. I love cooking, I love food and I love being creative in the kitchen — playing music, enjoying wine, cooking with friends. The timed competitive cooking thing is really not my style. The moment I felt like I was not having fun and enjoying the actual process of cooking, tasting, plating and being creative in the kitchen was when I knew I needed to check in with myself. I come from a certain “let it marinate” tradition, waking up on Sunday mornings to the intoxicating smells of a beautiful Sunday sauce that has already been cooking for hours, prepared by my amazing Italian mom. Food has always been a full, rich, passionate experience for me, and to rush or force something that didn’t feel natural was starting to become frustrating. With that being said, I had a total blast and feel so thankful to have been able to be a part of such a great experience. What's the best piece of advice the mentors or Committee members gave you? RG: I guess very early on I realized that many of my fellow cast members were professionally trained chefs that had an amazing sense of food authority and plating skill that was beyond even my Italian mom’s cooking talent or skills. So I kind of had an, “OK, Rosa, you gotta make the most of this” attitude. The mentors were really encouraging during the process and tried to remind me to just do me and do what I know and not to try and be something I’m not, which was pretty cool. She "gave up" because because she realized she didn't have the necessary skillset for this competition. Mediterranean Mom had the same insight when she was begging those chicken kabobs to cook faster and said, "I have no experience pushing out large quantities of food like this." I'm tired of this show casting all these people who are destined to scramble around and fail. In the very first episode, Dom told us he had stage fright. Hey, let's shine a spotlight on this guy every week! The guy with drag queen stage experience probably has the presence to tango through an alien invasion but can't flavor up a shrimp. I can see why Alton left. His goofy Cutthroat Kitchen, with all the mish-mashed final dishes, is actually more legitimate. Edited June 29, 2015 by candall 3 Link to comment

Johnny Dollar June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 I can't recall a season where I found literally every one of the contestants so utterly boring. How ridiculous is it that FN is constantly coming up with new shows being hosted by existing personalities, yet can't find one prime time show for the winners of this debacle. Suggestion to Suzie and Kermit - with all of the B list celebs with shows on The Cooking Channel (one of the Saved by the Bell girls, the less talented Duff), surely you can find a slot for Stephen Curry's wife and their cute daughter. I'd watch those two playing Candyland. 1 Link to comment
JTMacc99 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 So... Four episodes in and absolutely nothing has changed my mind on this being the Jay, Arnold, and some other people season. The dials of doom pretty much confirmed exactly what I've been watching since the start. Those two guys have the full set of skills to win this show (not necessarily to be an actual star by the way, which is not required.) I do believe that Arnold will find a home on the Food Network when this is done. He's pretty charming and knows food. Having said that, he's had one too many food failures for my liking. Wasn't he on Top Chef? He needs to get his act together with the food, or he's going to get booted far before he should be. I didn't mind this challenge. I liked the food switch. It did indeed show us who had range. It also made me a little concerned about Eddie and as I mentioned, Arnold. 1 Link to comment
cooksdelight June 29, 2015 Author Share June 29, 2015 Arnold definitely screwed up the shrimp, but he also may have been worried about overcooking them. Ever had an overcooked shrimp? It's like trying to eat tire rubber. At his age, with his experience, he should know better. Link to comment
Lamb18 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 (edited) Jay should go on Big Brother. He's got that BB shouting at the camera voice down pat. I wish they hadn't switched the contestants' food around. I liked Rosa and she may have done better with her original food. Emilia's chicken was purchased by the Blue team - it must have been Alex's. The blue team was going to make everything curry. Rosa was screwed because Rue was going to make a vegetarian dish. Too bad she didn't put the portabellos on a skewer, too, but there might not have been enough skewers. Remember the time they messed with their ingredients, or their mics, or had hecklers in the audience? There's more to this job than a 30-minute stand-and-stir, apparently. From what Jeff Mauro & other winners have said, the actual filming of their "prize" show only takes a couple of weeks, and the bulk of their first season with Food Network IS public appearances, TV shows and live demos. That is, IF they make it that far past the win. Amy Finley only did 6 episodes, Justin did a single show, and Lenny has done nothing. Regardless, these folks have to hit the ground running and don't have the luxury of being cajoled and developed over the course of several months. Dom just isn't cutting it. Unless it's a producer put-on to provide some sort of "miracle personality" emergence, he needs to just go. 1 Link to comment
Jesse June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 Oh, the show already knew it. She "gave up" because because she realized she didn't have the necessary skillset for this competition. Mediterranean Mom had the same insight when she was begging those chicken kabobs to cook faster and said, "I have no experience pushing out large quantities of food like this." But to me, that's the one thing the really wouldn't ever have to do if they get hired by FN. If they are ever cooking for an event like that, they'd have time and staff. Given that we can't ever taste the food on TV, I actually think they put too much emphasis on the taste of the food. 1 Link to comment
JTMacc99 June 29, 2015 Share June 29, 2015 Yes, but "what you would really have to do if you were hired by FN" and "necessary skill set for this competition" are not fully overlapping circles on the Venn Diagram. 4 Link to comment
