S10.E11: Jessa's Wedding

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure that when she was facing away from the camera Jessa said she had already eaten eggs and something else, it seemed to me that Michelle was playing up to the camera that she was such a good "mommy" (I think she referred to herself that way).

I'm a relative Duggar newbie,, can anyone tell me what he did to Josiah, please. TIA

Josiah panicked at the news of Michelle expecting number 20 and got emotional and burst into tears  during the family announcement. (Anyone with half a brain would have considering he almost lost his mother and baby sister) he ran off during the family filming this episode and JB quite forcefully strong armed him back to the group, where he appeared wiping his eyes and holding his arm like it was hurt. As Literata said, the "Other Duggar kids and Grandma " thread have discussed it quite a bit. That's it in a nutshell.

I don't know if I'm on the bandwagon that a wedding reception must have a meal.  I think the couple should do whatever they think is best and whatever fits in their budget.  However, they need to specify this in the invitation so guests are not expecting a meal.  I would assume most of BinGermin and Jessa's guests knew about this since it's common practice in Fundieland.

But as a guest, you can bet that I would not travel a long distance for a cake-and-punch reception either.

when JB walked Jessa down the aisle and they got to Ben Jessa was beaming! That was so sweet!

When he put the ring on her finger she said "its gorgeous"! I liked that they both had a surprise for each other.

I didnt see Josie, where was she?

I enjoyed the show but didn't think it needed to be two hours long.

Ben is a very nice person with great intentions. Problem is, he's way too young and inexperienced to be a husband right now. He's only 19! I sincerely hope Jessa isn't pregnant yet. However, I've seen the People Magazine photos and believe she is. OMG!

Jessa's wedding gown is absolutely gorgeous. It blew my mind. (Sooooo much more classic and stylish than Jill's, I think.) She did make a beautiful bride!

So happy to see little Jordyn as the only Duggar Family flower girl. You could see she felt very special. Good for her.

I absolutely HATE the bridal party running out of the ceremony venue. Hope that doesn't become a trend.

I was embarrassed for everyone involved with hosting that awful wedding reception. Who, in their right mind(s), would hold an outdoor party without heaters or tents/tables/chairs in early November? ....and serve ice cream sundaes?

It seemed to me that Jessa and Ben spent little time at the reception which I found odd. Granted, editing has come into play but they just seemed like they needed to make their appearance, greet a few guests, and be driven away. I don't think there was any kind of meal/get together at the Duggar home after the parking lot reception because it looked like the two families were actually saying good-bye to the newly married couple.

I don't mind Josh and/or Anna. I think their children are adorable.

I think Jill keeps expecting to be treated by her family the way they treated Michelle when she was pregnant. But Michelle was treated that way because she was Michelle - the pregnancy was only the excuse. Derick does seem to treat Jill very lovingly, and I hope she learns, as her own family grows, that he and her children really are her real family.

I thought it was interesting that Jessa didn't tear up until Jim Bob said she was a beautiful bride. She believes that she's beautiful. But she didn't believe him when he told her she was a good daughter.

I found it unusual that JB didn't tell Jessa he loved her. Not even once!

Haven't read all the posts, but finally got to watch the whole episode.

Don't like the pastor and the way he talked all pastorish (I know that is not a word) during the ceremony.  The Bengermin- WTF ever he was saying was awful!

Guinn is awesome!  She has real emotion.  She was crying when they were married.  I would be bawling my eyes out but trying not to.  I cry at every freaking wedding I go to.  Can't help it.  I cried at my sons high school graduation.  MEchelle was all happy happy smile smile.   Good on you MEchelle.  You've got the emotion under control.  However, I DO NOT like her husband (Guinn's) at all.  He is crazy as a loon.

I think MEchelle consulted on a wedding dress that would not make her look like a construction accident and I was very happy to hardly notice her.

Rehearsal dinner was so nice compared to the parking lot tragedy.

Josh makes me sick- no other way around it.  And I want to have Anna's adenoids removed.  How does Mackie know what a queen looks like??? Hmmm… watching a little Disney?  Hope so!

They should be embarrassed to have that many people in a parking lot (that I'm sure gave you gifts) with no place to sit and no food to eat.  I'm sorry- but windy and cold is not (and I know a lot of people don't consider that cold) an appealing reception in November.  Maybe some hot food and coffee spiked with some Baileys would have made this more inviting or some of the people less annoying.

Sierra is a media whore.  Why did she have to follow them out as they were leaving the reception???  Keep your loud mouth back there!  You are a screaming crazy woman!  Can't stand her.

Jill has a million of those curling irons- why didn't she take one to her hair.  She was in the good part of pregnancy- where you feel really good.  She seemed as if she felt really good.

Another thought- I wonder if Jessa did the behind the scenes kiss to piss Josh off- so he couldn't upstage her as he did with Jill.

Josh annoys me more each time I see him.  He's a graphic artist and now an announcer.  LMAO.

Good luck Jessa and Ben!  Please don't be pregnant.  In the TH's at the end, all anyone could talk about was freaking babies!  How about spend a year having fun?

Sierra speaks exactly like Jessa. Her phrasing, hesitations, choice of words, etc. are duplicates.

Josiah panicked at the news of Michelle expecting number 20 and got emotional and burst into tears  during the family announcement. Wait! What? Number 20? Was this after Josie's birth? (I'm not a steady viewer of the show.)

Not surprised that Jill didn't put that much effort into her appearance for the wedding day. I don't think it had anything to do with morning sickness/nausea. I just think she didn't feel like doing more than the bare minimum.  As an aside, her hair always looks so limp to me - I wish she'd cut a few inches off and bring more life to it.

I hope Jinger and Jessa don't drift apart. I think their friendship is quite cute.

trimthatfat - I'm glad you brought up the subject of cutting hair.  Is it against their religion for girls to have short(er) hair?  OMG I'm appalled every time I see the girls/women cooking and all that hair down to their asses flying around.  Yuck!  At the wedding I've never seen more SUPER long hair in my life -- just about every female - young or old - had it.  They ALL need to take off a good 8 inches - it'd look so much thicker and healthier!  Just my opinion...

Jesus turned water into GRAPE JUICE???? Ok - now I've heard everything. I have no problem with Christians (or anyone) who choses not to drink. The social environment of drinking is different today than Bible times. I get that too. There are also many other safe drinking options now and less in Bible times. Drinking is just not a critical thing for anyone to do so if you don't want to... don't. But don't go rewriting the Bible. There is no question at all... it was wine and Jesus drank wine.

Jinger made me cry. I think it came across quite clear in this episode that Jessa, while she can come across as icy to the viewing public, really connects with her siblings. The emotion, the sentiments expressed, and the "rock on" (I am out of touch) sign one of the girls gave to Jessa before she walked down the aisle when Jessa was sitting in the chair.

Pretty sure the 'rock on' you're thinking of is 'I Love You' in sign language.

Jim Bob has recently said only the girls have smart phones.  Smart phones are too tempting for boys and girls apparently don't even like porn.  It leads me to believe the Duggars have never heard of fanfiction.

Oh my god. I just realized it's entirely likely that that somewhere in the world, someone is writing benessa fanfic. Benessa sex fic. Oh, my god. Brain bleach needed.

Yes- this was the announcement of Jubilee (who she miscarried).

I am sure the concerned reaction was precisely BECAUSE of Josie's birth.

Derick is officially limp spaghetti. I really thought he was gonna be so different.

And I didn't realize how REALLY ANNOYING Jill is. She is awful. I think Josh annoys me less.

Still wondering if Jill will be the beard to DerrickDillard.  Hoping not for Jilly Muffins sake- but there is something very unnatural about his interactions with Jill. Just my observations.

Or, he could just have turned into another Duggar that makes me sick.  Only time will tell. ;)

Are Ben's family the same religion as the Duggar's?  Was Ben raised with the same beliefs of 'No Kissing Until You're Married'?  Has he ever 'kissed' before?

Sometimes  you see him in glasses, wonder if he wears contacts and wears the glasses when his allergies are really bothering him.

Just My Opinion, but if you are going to choose to have a formal church wedding, i.e., formal wedding gown, men in tuxes, bridesmaids, etc., than dress appropriately.  An outdoor, informal wedding is wonderful & means just as much as a formal wedding.  Just as odd as it would look to have someone show up to an informal, outdoor beach wedding in a formal gown and stiletto  heels, it looks odd to see someone dressed in flip flops or barefoot in a formal church wedding.

Just irks me that they are so cheap with the receptions. We all know that TLC is footing the bill for this. People, who do not have their own reality show or have a major cable channel footing their bills, are using their hard earned money to fly out to be a part of the celebration or purchase gifts for them. They are being thanked by a cup of partially melted ice cream to "enjoy" while standing up in a cold parking lot.  All so Jim Boob can preach to us 'Go cheap and pocket the rest'.

TLC didn't pay for the wedding. The Duggars get paid for the episode just like any other episode but TLC didn't pay for the wedding itself.

Just want to repeat this. We have this notion that TLC pays for this and anytime someone or a company is in the show it must be "free." But reality TV is notoriously cheap. They might have been paid a bonus, as this would have been a big viewership episode, but we, as viewers, have to get over this idea that TLC pays for everything.

And Ben's family is similar in some ways to the Duggars, but not in others, religion-wise. They probably did encourage more of a courtship, but would not have insisted upon every little rule it any more than the Bates parents do. Only the Duggars seem to demand uniformity.

The Duggars and crew were well fed before, during and after the wedding by craft services. Tv crews always have contractual meals daily, sometimes its also for the family.   I would bet that Jimcheap makes sure they get the food too.

I really hope all those fools who went to this wedding did NOT buy gifts for them.

The Duggars are TLC's current cash cow. I'm sure they get a LOT of perks and freebies. Remember, Kate Gosselin got that treatment before the Duggars' show blew up.

I'm sure plenty of businesses comped stuff in return for being shown on air with the DUGGARS!!!!111 So, TLC may not have comped services, but the businesses themselves did. Flowers and the ring spring immediately to mind. If the ring wasn't totally comped, it was likely steeply discounted. I imagine the only things Boob paid for were the things that came off as the cheapest: aka. The Reception, both food and venue.

I just can't see how even television exposure in Northwest Arkansas is going to add up to being worth the cost of a diamond ring or Allure gown. Especially being that the Duggars main followers are not terribly well off.

And I think TLC learned a lot of valuable lessons with the Gosselins and even early years with the Duggars. Sure, they are the current highest ranking show, but they aren't so high ranking that their advertising is worth huge bucks.

Exactly! It was filmed and craft service for the filming must have been on hand.  Did Boob instruct the children to hide it and take it back to the compound instead of giving a bit of food to the wedding participants?

Hope this isn't too off topic but I'd love to see the Duggars watch "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" . As far as I can remember, it's not offensive and doesn't contain any cursing but was very funny. I remember the one scene of the mom peeling about 100 lbs of potatoes getting ready for the wedding dinner along with the dad spraying Windex on everything since it cured all ills. I even thought it was nice of her husband to convert to her religion before they married, and I enjoyed seeing how her parents interacted with him and his family. It was over the top and funny, but I could see how a wedding like this could happen in real life. My inlaws are Italian and they act quite a bit like this family.

I don't really get all the hate for the reception.  Where are you supposed to receive 1300 people?  A parking lot isn't ideal but they'd probably rather have their friends around them than not.  Cake and punch receptions are the norm in this part of the world.  I had cake and punch at my afternoon wedding and with rare exception that's all I've ever come to expect at a wedding.

One of the companies that provided free toy houses to the Gosselins talked about how much business that brought in and said how it was very well worth the three houses.  Allure Bridal is sold across the country so they may have given the gown.  That said it's tough to know exactly what is paid and what is comped.  A lot of it is though, but not all.  TLC is known as notoriously cheap, but they are also known for aggressively seeking comps.  They will change plans on an episode if they can't get the desired comps.

Viewership was great (for TLC) and worth it to TLC for however much they did pay of it:  3.525 M viewers and a 1.2 rating.

Yep, he paid for anything that was free.     Ben has money to buy rings? LOL   Even if he did, how would he be able to convey what he wanted.  Uh,  mmm, well, yeah, uh....I want one of them things, those clear rocks that have some shine to em.    Oh yeah, uh, mmm    I know, its um, called a Pubic Zirconium.

If you want to eat....Italian weddings are the BEST. My cousin's wedding had a seafood station, a prime rib station, a pasta station (of course), a side dish station, and platters of little Italian pastries and cookies piled high at every table. And a huge cake. And an open bar. We're Italians. We feed you until you have to be rolled out the fucking door.  And there WILL be dancing.

Ice cream in a parking lot? No. Just NO.

Agree!  Italian weddings have the best food ever!

A venue that can seat 1300 or more people will also have rooms that are large enough to accommodate the same number of people.

I think it actually depends on what kind of people rather than where or what part of the world you live in.

Most of the 1300 wouldn't have expected more than what they got, so I'm not that put out by the reception. I do think, however, that Jill's wedding was more thoughtful of guests than Jessa's.

And I imagine the Seewalds could have provided money for a ring. They aren't destitute by any means, even if they don't enjoy an easy standard of living that they once had. But they almost certainly saved then and are able to handle some reasonable expenses.

Then don't invite 1300 people!  First of all, how "close" are they to all of these people?  If you can't receive them and feed them, make it 100 for each side of the family.

From what I saw it didn't look like many people bothered staying for the reception. If there were two hundred people in the parking lot I'd be surprised.

The wedding was strictly a means to an end for Jessa. She could have cared less if people were there or not.

Eh, it's their wedding and the people came knowing what to expect. I haven't read much where the people attending the wedding were unhappy. I do agree that there were probably some raised eyebrows about how cheap JB is, but it's not as if most people didn't know that either.

Also, I'm betting that the Seewalds have some sort of reception at their home later for their friends. And the closer Fundy types were obviously visiting with the Duggars previous to the wedding and being fed, which I'm sure JB grumbled about having to do.

Oooh, so close, but I think there's a scene with the couple in a bed (I think in pajamas?) before they were married. That's enough to get you shipped off to the prayer closet. Also, it featured a woman who wanted to get an education.

I think Jim Bob is definitely creepy and inappropriate. I don't think it's appropriate for a man to teach his children to kiss, by demonstrating with their mother.

I don't think Jim Bob ever molested his daughters, but his attitude and behavior regarding their sexuality gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I certainly hope nothing untoward has ever happened to those girls, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but as someone who was abused, I have honestly sometimes watched Jana and wondered if she had become an "always available" substitute for the times when Michelle wasn't. Of course I'd much rather be wrong than right about this, and hope it's just my own experiences colouring my view.

Have to say their kisses weren't as uncomfortable looking as Jill and Derrick's. They knew what they were doing

For one, Jessa doesn't kiss the way Anna and Jill do in that awkwardly needy and desperate way -- those two go in for the kiss like they're drinking from a water fountain. Ick.

And another, you have Jill and Derick, who are a geeky, nerdy couple trying to look connected, when they're not.

Then there's Ben and Jessa, in contrast, who sweetly kiss like a normal couple who are comfortable in each other's presence because they KNOW EACH OTHER.

If you can't fit or afford to feed (at least some light appetizers) 1300 people, then you need to cut down the guest list or change venues. Maybe both.

Confession: good thing I didn't get an invite, bc it would have been my stealth mission to sneak around with a pair of scissors and cut at least a foot of raggedy hair off most of the female guests. If you don't have the time, resources or knowledge to maintain very long hair, then cut it to a manageable length.

The clothing: loved Jessa's dress, liked the bridesmaid dresses, liked the groomsmen clothing, HATED the bridesmaid shoes. I get wearing something you're comfortable in and that can be reworn instead of 5" dyed satin pumps, but seriously. Don't wear beach flops to an indoor wedding in Nov.

The rehearsal dinner: Ben's mom is awesome. She knows her children, lets them have their day, hosted a beautiful, not extravagent, but adequate and appropriate, rehearsal dinner. Highlight = when Grandma informed Michelle that Josie wasn't even born when JBs dad died. I bet Michelle and Grandma would punch each other in the face if given the chance. BTW, how is Jim Bob so unattractive, when his parents were both knockouts.

Jessa looked so uncomfortable hugging Ben's siblings. Bless her heart. She's built such a wall due to being told any contact is a mortal sin, and then having any emotion 'trained' out of her. She's a bitch, but she's been so repressed, I'd rather see an angry bitch escape than an obedient but depressed and defeated person stay.

The ceremony: I also hate running out of the church. No need. Beating the life out of that piano. No need. I think the private kiss was bc Jessa is a control freak who didn't want to look like she didn't know what she was doing, and then have it on repeat by TLC and the internet, but I'm glad she made that choice.

The reception:  Cheap and thrown together. I think Jessa has more taste and elegance than the rest of the Duggars, but cutting corners is so ingrained in her, that she just cannot fathom spending money. I guess this is better than being like an 18 year old NBA player from the sticks who blows all of his money on cars and shoes, but it was obvious they skimped.

Ice cream only, outside, in November, was a bad idea. Outside in July, with some other light sandwiches or even BBQ and hotdogs, or inside, could be fun. But just generic ice cream with a few skimpy toppings, reeks of cheap.

Three of my four grandparents are Italian. We have everything from professionals to blue collar, from progressive Catholics to old school Vatican I Catholics, plus Southern evangelicals ranging from run of the mill Methodists to Duggarific fundies. DHs family is on the verge of the cast of the Sopranos or RHW of NJ. I have attended a wide variety of weddings, but no one has had a wedding that was chintzy on food, even if it's teenage shotgun elopement. Even if it was primarily cake and punch, there was ALWAYS finger sandwiches, pasta salad, fruit, usually church casseroles, veggie trays, chips and dip, etc. I've seen as much Italian wedding soup and also beans and cornbread as I've seen steak and lobster. It's just common courtesy, that if you're going to invite people to celebrate with you, and they give you gifts, you make them comfortable and feed them something. Doesn't have to be fancy, but it has to be filling.

I'll say it once again that I think her "non-traditional" wants are a way to cut corners and bc she wants to be stylish and use proper etiquette, but she just has no idea how. She was basically trained into submission (as best they could) and then forced to raise her siblings, all in Gothard isolation, so she has no clue how to do anything else. If she had a mother as attentive and patient as Guinn, she'd have amazing style and much better hosting skills. It's just easier to say she wants 'non-traditional' than to attempt a Kate Middleton wedding and have it look tacky *cough Jill cough*

This crosses my mind sometimes too. I'm convinced there's more story here than we know. How much more, and how bad it might be, well, I try not to think about that. But the possibility can't be ignored when you look at the "creepy" factor with Boob, Gothard, his brother and other male members of the cult etc.

As I said earlier, MAYBE the lace of food at the reception would be a non-issue but only if they weren't taking a honeymoon.  But spending your money to go to Europe instead of on your 1,300 guests (your choice how many you invite): tacky and hurtful.

Jim Bob is all kinds of annoying and grating, but I do not for one second think that he as even thought of sexually abusing any of his children.

Also, Sierra makes me roll my eyes, bc she doesn't think of the most basic things (hello, outside in Nov?, oh yeah, we might need heaters! Shut the freezer door? Good idea!), yet acts like she's Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner, BUT - her comment of "this is a NON-TRADITIONAL wedding. Everything is NON-TRADITIONAL" in that deadpan tone cracked me up. She knows it really isn't non-traditional, but Jessa is insistent it is, so she's rolling with it.

Exactly... I personally wanted to serve dinner at my reception, but if I'm invited to one that starts at say 1pm I'm not expecting lunch, dinner, or anything other than light snacks Just let people know. In this world I'm assuming guests weren't expecting a bar either, so really, whatever they had might've been a good thing, but a parking lot with ice cream?  I'd be kinda pissed traveling for that.

Jill and Derick are so pathetic it has made me seriously think that Jill may well be Derick's first and only girlfriend. Maybe their wedding night was first time for BOTH of them. Someone who dated previously should be a little more physically-adept than he is. Those two just peck and giggle at each other 99% of the time.

Yeah, I don't see that happening either. Boob is a creep who is far too invested in his children's sexuality but I really really don't think he would take advantage in that way. His relationship with his daughters do come across as very controlling and somewhat emotionally incestious (having their hearts, purity rings and so on) but I don't believe there has ever been any physical abuse going on there.

Jana might have been subjected to some unwanted quality time with that evil little troll Bill Gothard (god do I hope not!), but Jim Bob? No.

I seriously would have loved to see Jessa and Ben get married in Thorncrown Chapel at dusk with 150 people that they really wanted to invite with a nice evening (indoor) reception to follow. I think it would have been much more Jessa's style.

Just finished watching.  I have to say, I can't find fault in the wedding itself.  I thought it was heartfelt and well done.  I was touched by JB's emotion and it made me tear up. I'm SO happy to see that they were pronounced husband and wife, and exited- the way the news reports were written at the time, it sounded like they made a big production of leaving, kissing, having JB and Michelle kiss in front of everyone instead, and have them come back in a finish the ceremony.  I"m relieved to see that did not happen at all!!

But then, of course, the pastor had to make a huge deal out of talking about it, sigh, so everyone in the auditorium could know and envision everything that was happening at that moment!  Give it a rest, people!!!!  Josh sounded downright depressed and disappointed that he didn't get to see it.  I fully respect and appreciate their choice to do it privately, so they could actually take their time and enjoy it, rather than do it awkwardly in front of thousands!

Ugg, and the BenGermin thing, that sounded so ignorant. I re-watched and he wasn't saying "Jesser" so I think it really is an ignorant pronunciation.  I wonder if it bothered them- I am thinking in everyday life, he called him Bin, so they wouldn't have known that he says "BenGermin" until he started saying it at the ceremony, and by then it was too late to correct him!

One of my favorite parts of this show is when Derrick and Jill, and Bin and Jessa talk about what they look forward to and enjoy about "married life". So many euphemisms, and we all know exactly what they're talking about!!!  So funny to hear them talk about it in code when we've all been told ad nauseum what they will be enjoying!

With so many siblings, I wonder how they pick which ones get to be in the wedding without hurting the others?  Jinger is a given, but the others seem kind of random.

Oh, and I LOVE how they asked John David and Josiah what makes a happy marriage!  Spoken by true experts. LOL

Oh, and as a finale, we are reminded that Jessa is now married to BIN SEEWALD!

trimthatfat - I'm glad you brought up the subject of cutting hair.  Is it against their religion for girls to have short(er) hair?

I don't think it's against their actual religion so much as it's not what daddy likes (long wavy hair). I sincerely hope the girls have never been abused and I don't really feel they have (ETA at least not by JimBob), but I still find his whole obsession with them and their appearance and sex lives creepy. JB you do not need to be the one demonstrating how a man kisses your daughter. I can totally see him wanting to be in the bedroom that first night to make sure it all goes well (barf!) but I have a hard time seeing him abusing one of them.

I'd love to see one of the girls get a short haircut just because though.
