Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

Does this mean she's not gonna finish school? I remember Kelly saying they wouldn't get married until she graduated in May. What's the rush?

They might get married the weekend after graduation. 8months is a long engagement for these folks but not unheard of.

I was hoping the announcement wasn't a Tori engagement. Tori had said she didn't want to get engaged until next May. She was pretty firm on that in the episode where her sisters tried to press her to get engaged sooner. Erin saying she had gotten married and still finished school. None of them seemed to listen to Tori saying she didn't want to. That she wanted to wait until she graduated and didn't want to plan a wedding while going to school. I really hope the engagement happening now is something Tori wanted and not her parents or her sisters. If she wants to get married after graduation I hope she does just that.

Tori said she didn't want to get married until graduation. She'd recently said on an episode that she thought he'd propose in October, so I think she was planning on being engaged well before she graduated.

Either they'll get married in May or June, or maybe over winter break but if she's that close to finishing I'm sure she will graduate, newlywed or not.

Tori is engaged, Carlin is probably courting and Josie has a "special" friend. I'd guess all the of age Bates girls will be married by the end of next year.

Congrats to Tori, her ring is pretty.

I'm hoping she finishes school. It would be such a waste to drop out with only a year to go.

A winter wedding would make sense, that way she could have her honeymoon before the spring semester starts.

Erin did it. No reason Tori can't. Plus, Tori said that she's probably going to depend on Kelly and her sisters to do the actual wedding planning, so that frees her up between semesters. Her nails are still nicely manicured, so this didn't happen that long ago. Maybe a week to ten days? Didn't UP start pimping this late last week during the season finale or was it earlier this week? I honestly didn't pay attention to when they started pimping it, just that it would be tonight.

The Bateses are moving on up in the world. Torby got a People exclusive.

Maybe People has figured out this is a far more photogenic and appealing family with actual personalities that the other bunch is missing.

He went to PCC. That alone makes him at minimum a fringe fundie. He might not have been exposed to the courtship model before meeting Tori, but I've seen a couple of his school projects, and he projects pretty fundie in his speech and by extension, his beliefs.

Those pictures are so defrauding. Bobby has his hands on her abdomen in one pic and a full tight frontal hug in the other. Yikes.

Maybe People found out that a little good old-fashioned mild sexuality and affection are more enticing to readers than the umpty-umpth Duggar sermon about side hugs (and why the person you're going to marry in a couple months should not touch you in an unholy attempt to prevent your splintering your tibia on pavement.)

Bateses' big news:

Tori's engaged.

I was hoping it would be that Michael was pregnant, oh well.

Every time I see this link at the top of the page, I keep hoping it's an announcement that Michael is pregnant.  I have a feeling it's going to happen soon; fingers crossed.

Bateses confirm December wedding. You're welcome. I called this last year. :D

He’s so pretty!

I don’t even know what she looks like.

ETA: Oh it’s a slideshow. She’s standard Bates face.

Is there a reason that fundy engagements require a huge planned out presentation?   As in staged, decorated, family on hand, photographer at the ready?    I don't get it.   When my husband proposed, it was just the two of us.   Guess I have failed fundyism again, gonna need a moment to collect myself.

Right there with you! It seems to be more the norm for non-fundies  as well these days, something I attribute to Pinterest. Every life event is overly documented and attended.

When Mr. Fin and I were expecting our first child, his mom told me to call her as soon as we were headed to the hospital so she could put on her "face."  I played dumb and asked why. She said she wanted to look good in the pictures. At that point, I told her the only people that would be in attendance would be those who participated in the conception.  She did not take it well.

I was thinking the same thing.

@tabloidlover  There are no dates, proms and dances, and a whole lot more things that most fundies don't indulge in.  They court, get engaged, married and reproduce.  This is all they have.  They don't seem to be able to be allowed any privacy until they marry.  And I imagine, with the fundy family on tv, they often get paid media attention.

I couldn't successfully attach the early photo of the Kellar family, but google "Anna Keller's Family" and there's a montage of photos. It's the one with the family dressed all in navy blue outfits.

Pa Keller did look marginally better with hair. With Ma, I still can't see past the tragic glasses and hair to make much of a judgement. Neither of them is approaching "good looking" IMO, but all their kids are decent looking, so I guess the genes came from somewhere...

When my now. ex-husband proposed he did it over the phone because we were in a long distance relationship.

When my husband proposed, it was completely unplanned. We had only been dating about three months, and while I could tell he was getting pretty serious, I was still  somewhat unsure about the whole relationship. We were talking about it, and I said something to the effect that I didn't think he was as serious about it as he thought he was, and his answer was, "I'll show you how serious I am. Marry me". Then he tickled me until I said yes (I am deathly ticklish),  bought a ring the next day, and wouldn't let me take my agreement back. He said he considered himself engaged, and that was that. We kept dating, but it took me another six months to decide to wear the ring.

The elaborate proposals don't bother me. As a poster stated above, these young people don't have prom, graduation, etc - rites of passage where they are admired and their community supports them. All they have are engagements and weddings. Big proposals aren't my thing, but the fundys aren't alone in participating in the trend.

Absolom: Thank you....that's the photo I couldn't attach. There is another one out there in which Mrs. Kellar was younger in and she looked quite nice...so, it's lack of trying on her part. You guys are the best.

I have to hone up on my computer skills...I tried to copy and paste, but it didn't work for me.

Congrats to Tori and Bobby on their engagement.  It was really starting to get embarrassing watching Kelly beg Bobby to propose.  Say what you want about Michelle, but we’ve never seen her “hinting” to any of her prospective son in-law. I hope Tori will be able to secure a nice size home like the Duggar girls instead of something from tiny house nation like her sisters.

Tori's dress and Bobby's hand on her belly make her look like she's already in the second trimester of a pregnancy.

I find the whole thing creepy as well.  I'm actually amazed they're able to seal the deal on the wedding night without both sets of parents guiding them.

What gets me is the emphasis on that all-important "first kiss at the altar."  All the showing off, especially Boob and Ma hamming it up onstage at the kids' weddings, is just stupid.  They try & steal the limelight, and it's so narcissistic.  Ugh.

  • Love 10

I still shake my head that the likes of People magazine pays these people (Duggars and Duggar-adjacent) any attention.  They are getting engaged, married and pregant at breakneck speed because that is all they think is important and about all they do.  When one of them breaks away, gets a real education, and writes a tell all THEN People magazine would have a story.

I'm not against marriage or kids.  They are a very important part of my own life.  I just don't understand people who think the whole rest of the world is as excited about their lifetime milestones as they are.

And for whatever reason, other than Joy, the Duggar girls tend to marry a little older - excepting Michael.  Not that it makes them superior in any way, but at least limits the children by a few.

I am sure Jesus would love his flock to have nice glasses.  In fact aren't these people always talking about their countenance?  At first I thought the gal with the big hair next to her WAS her and then I saw those glasses.
