S03.E07: Pauline's Story

People like Pauline (and Penny) are real abusers.  If Dillion wasn't verbally abused he would have had the upper hand and force her to lose weight. Pauline would tell Dillion to get her food and coke.  Dillion should come back with something within her eating plan and a diet soda.  If she doesn't like it. She can certainly get up and go get her own food.  If she is upset about it.  She can wipe her own ass and take her own shower.

The victim here is her son.  I feel sorry for him. I cannot believe he doesn't have other family to go to so he can just leave.  I think he has been so verbally abused that he is just stuck there in a dead end situation. I predict in 10 years’ time we will see him seeking help from Dr. Now.

From what I understood Pauline to say last night, her parents divorced and money was tight. She said there was no such thing as welfare at that time, which I do not understand because welfare has been around since the 1930's.

Yes, I didn't understand this, because she'd have been a child in the 60s.  And most mothers would worry more about feeding their children, than being ashamed to take welfare.

And this list must have a number cruncher who can figure out just when Pauline and Penny will achieve a goal weight, say 200 lbs, at their "own pace" they're so proud of touting.

I'm guessing that even Penny would be pushing 100 years.

Someone mentioned it looked like the same apartment that Penny had, and I suspect it was, and that either TLC or Dr. Now has the lease.

I'd have liked to seen the trip, and did they get motels, or did she sleep in the van?

I think Zsalynn kind of explained how she was a very popular extreme size model/pinup/fetish ?    I remember them showing pics of her in a swimsuit and maybe in a hot tub?     Please correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I remember.     Also, isnt that how she met her asshole husband?

I agree. I think the show was very clear about her having been a model/web celebrity for fetish sites. I don't know if she actually did porn, but otherwise, Zsalynn was very upfront about how she made an income, even if some of the details were glossed over. I don't think it's necessary to go into detail about what variety of videos she and her husband made or distributed--I think it was sufficiently forthright that TLC addressed the category of income. Comparatively, for Pauline, literally nothing was said. There was no mention of having been the world's heaviest woman, or having been on multiple other shows, or any other peep. If it hadn't been for basic web sleuthing, Pauline would have remained a semi-anonymous abusive shut-in.

Link to comment

My recollection is that they did NOT mention Zsalynn's porn fetish past in the original showing; I posted and linked following the show wondering why they never touched on it.

In the original showing they talked about her involvement with NAAFA, attending the conferences, having a large social network and being a bit of a poster girl because she was gregarious, out-going and seemed to really enjoy her life.  I don't think they ever made it clear if she met Gareth through NAAFA.  They did show some of her modelling shots, in bikinis, etc., but they did not specify that these were a money-making venture.  She also talked about men taking her on vacations and the like.  The information on her modelling/porn career was brought out more on the other special she was part of about the group of women in her area that were all having weight loss surgery.  They presented her work as modelling.  In this kind of fetish work in particular, one person's modelling is another person's porn.  There is a great variety in the type of work the women do..

One of the reasons these issues come up on the boards is some of the women would rather say they are on disability than say they do porn.  I believe they fear backlash from viewers.  Some posters have jumped on the disability issue and are very adamant about their issues with people "living off the government dollar" or "wasting my tax money".  So, either way, porn or disability, when the person is an asshole, people tend to get pretty riled up.  For those of you wondering, people do pay taxes on the income they earn as "performers".  Their work is shown on legitimate, registered sites that must file 1099s for all performers and maintain clear accounting records.  I am not saying there aren't some that try to get around it (there are in any business) but porn work is not exempt from taxes; the deductible are just  a little more interesting.  (For those of you wondering, I do not work in porn.  However I know many people who work in different specialty areas).

Also, we don't know how much the women told the show or how much of what was told to them the show decided to present. But there definitely does seem to be a trend on this show of not displaying people's, shall we say, specialized careers.  Just like throughout their programming and much of reality TV they don't like to point out someone is a famewhore that will do anything to stay in the public eye - the godawful women trying to have the world's largest implants comes to mind.  Pauline will do anything to be on TV - reality, talk shows . . . .  I think she would put a flag in her ass and shoot firecrackers out of her cooch if she thought it would bring more attention to her.  And along the way, her family be damned.

Thanks for the link to the vlog.  She is a piece of work.  She talked for 28 minutes.  It was so sad that her son was feeding her lines.  Imagine what he has to listen to all day.  I'm glad her little dog is not overweight.

Why does she always have clothing/blankets or whatever draped on the back of her sofa or chair, on the back of her wheelchair?  I'm sure she is not able to do housekeeping at her weight, but it just seems in every scene that they are there.  Maybe since she is immobile, she keeps what she thinks she might need in a spot where she can reach it.

i guess she is deleting the negative comments on youtube because everyone commenting is telling her how sorry they are for her allowing TLC to edit her like that. LOL Olivia was also filmed by TLC, she lost 400 pounds in less time at age 46! It has to do with trying! This bitch is so full of crap its not even funny.

TLC knew about these women's backgrounds. If we can find out in a few minutes of sleuthing, they know in mere seconds.    They have a reputation of being dishonest, of exploitation (especially of children) so all they care about is profit.

If someone has hit rock bottom (Dr. Phil) then there is no covering that up or anything else.

They are happy as pigs in shit that everyone hates Pauline and Penny and laughing all the way to the bank.

Because Pauline was lying. She also claimed in that "Marathon Sex Weight Loss" article linked up thread that when she was 12 years old she was a gymnast. (Not that everything else in thar article wasn't a lie, too.) I would say I am curious as to why she turned out to be a morbidly obese pathological liar, but she was so loathsome, I can't manage to care.

For whatever reason, the ones who fail actually inspire me more.  I mentioned this in another thread, but I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) on 9/16/14.  When she said that she can eat anything she wants, and still lose weight, I nearly fainted because I made that same statement the day before!  I too was getting in the trap of eating crackers and well toasted bread, and that is bad bad bad (they are real easy to eat).  I am still losing 1 - 3 lbs a week, but how much quicker would it go if I didn't "cheat"? (I'm down 85 lbs in total and I was way less than half of her weight to start).  So I decided to give us bread/crackers for at least Lent!  I rewatched this show last night just to firm my resolve - I keep all these episodes on my DVR and watch them when I need a little encouragement - my husband thinks I'm crazy.

I've just started my weight loss journey. I'm still under 300 and have no plans or desire to get anywhere near the level of the participants on this show. My new doctor held me to the fire and actually talked to me about different plans and what he thought would work best for me (South Beach and starting out by treating my meals like meds, very controlled doses at particular times). I am watching this show to help me keep my resolve. Some of the participants blend together, but Pauline & Penny stand out. I could never imagine having my child have to bathe me because I was fat. I had to help bathe my grandmother when she was close to death from Cancer.  I'm sure that was humiliating enough for her, it seemed to be. Pauline seems to have no humility or shame.

Ex hubby Phil should come back, care for Pauline and set Dillon free.

Edited becuse I have no plans to get heavier

Anyone know if there is a "where are they now" on Pauline?

Pauline's episode was just recently aired for the first time and is part of this new season. I don't think there will be an update episode for her anytime too soon. Though you can see "where she is now" in her videos on youtube, one of which was posted just days ago (majorly rolling eyes here): still complaining, still over 500 pounds.

Same complex perhaps but different apartment. It had a completely different layout than Penny's apartment. Penny's apartment had the dining room right when you walk in the door, and her bed was right next to that door. Pauline's apartment had more of an entryway and her bed fit sideways back against the wall.

Dillion needs to leave but can he? He probably would feel guilty leaving his mother all alone. But I do agree that he's also an enabler. Pauline is a bitch and If I were her son she would be eating salad with 8oz of lean meat, a nice tall glad of ice water with lemon, and maybe a small amount of starch. No more fast food, pizza, eating big meals. If she can't even get out of bed how will she continue eating like this anyway?

I was really eager to see this episode because of her initial concern for her son.  What an infuriating disappointment.  I tried to understand her psychological make up to see why she is this way.  Food is a comfort, and probably with battling parents (and likely an overworked mom while divorced) being ill was a way to get attention.  So she has that coping mechanism (my opinion, I'm not a psychologist).  OK, fair enough....people start out with psych baggage....but we all have something and you can't hang on to it.  You are destroying your son.  If you don't want to change for you...CHANGE FOR HIM.  I'll wager he is just waiting for her to die so he can be free.  What 21 year old MAN goes to family bingo with his mommy???  That is incredibly sad.  He should be out looking for dates.

Love the suggestion upthread that food should be at the nurses' station and you have to damn well walk to get it.  Dr. Now - consider that.

Also, "swimming is the best exercises, is uses all your muscles."  OK, yeah, it probably does but walking in a pool is not swimming.   I understand it is (a) easier on the joints, (b) safer if you're afraid of falling and © better than nothing - but let's not pretend you're doing a Michael Phelps.

I have felt so much empathy for some of these people, but absolutely not Pauline.  Blech.

Then the episode I watched definitely didn't show that. I didn't see the original showing, I saw the one they showed a week or so prior to the update. The only reason I'm so clear about it is because I had seen her a year or so before in that documentary where she was part of the NAAFA and the focus was on women who underwent the surgery and still being accepted - or not - within the group, and they talked about it in depth. So I watched thinking "Oh, they're not even going there I guess."

Things like this are easy to say, but really, for Dillon I think it's not so cut and dried.  He's been emotionally and psychologically abused most (or all) of his life, is probably clinically depressed, and doesn't know any other way of life. Pauline is a master manipulator, a professional victim and her main target is Dillon.  From the outside, looking in, we can see what she's doing.  Even Dr. Now knew what she was doing and couldn't get her to budge.  She just kept switching techniques until he threw up his hands. Dillon, having been raised by her, sees that compliance is the only way to survive.  Anything else makes his life a living hell.  And I don't think he sees walking away as an option. If anything happened to her, it would be his fault, and he couldn't live with the guilt.  (Master manipulator...level...Expert.)

Your post said what I posted earlier but SO much better !        I dont think Dillon has any idea what a normal life is.   He has never had a life, its just about Pauline.

He may be too damaged by this point. He would need some sort of rehab, long time halfway house and years and years of therapy.  His best hope is that Pauline dies as soon as possible.  Even then, he might not have a good outcome.

Quite frankly - if she was earning money in ANY legal fashion I am good with that.  It is thinking that I am financing her "addiction" that irks me. I am pretty sure though that "porn" doesn't come with Care First Blue Cross Blue Shield so US taxpayers ARE funding the wasted surgical procedure and follow up.

There is no way to predict who will be a "success" without extensive "pre-surgical" evaluation.

Pauline was in no way a "good candidate".  Her attitude was never one of compliance.  Surgery can't help what the mind refuses to see and learn.

I finally watched it and holy bejebus. I never thought anyone could match Penny, but ol' Paulina didn't let us down! I felt bad for Dillon. All I kept thinking of is Shain Gandee came back to life as a chubby caregiver son, poor things.

Her excuses were something else. In the beginning when she was going on and on about moving all this way without having a yes or no from the doctor, and how the doctors decision meant a difference or life and death for her, I was really feeling for her and hoping he wouldn't turn her away. But that quickly changed. Like most have already said, I don't know why he admitted her to the hospital. It seems if they can't lose the weight at home on their own, they're not going to be successful post-surgery.

Her constant whimpering made me want to hit her. When she was weird toward the end, she was crying about her toe.  All that crying, then "owwwww, that's my toe!"

I also almost bust a gut laughing when he caught her lying about why she didn't go to PT. He calls them and comes back, "they said they called you 5 times..."  "oh, that was THEM?" haha.

And the article above, EW. Ew ew ew.  That's disguisting and a pretty sheet around your naked body is not lingerie.

tamales come in many flavors and fillings... sweet with raisins and condensed milk, chicken with green chili (my fave), beef and pork. here, they are sold by the dozen. They are usually healthier than regular fast food. But, I guess not if you eat the whole dozen for one meal. I buy mine from a lady I know who sellsvthem on thecweekend. But there is a lady who comes around Saturday mornings jingling a bell. It is a wonderful process!  I can only imagine how delish they are in Houston.

I grew up making dozens with my grandma, aunts, great-aunts and cousins on my Mexican side (duh) in Houston for the holidays. It is a TON of work. But San Antonio has the best so far. No they are definitely NOT healthy.

Oh Paulina...please gets with Penny and write a blog on how to shed 600 pounds with your knowledge.  Who needs a doctor when you know better anyway?

I just viewed Pauline's vlog that she made a few days ago. She's still full of excuses and denials and now she has a new one-it's all about the bad edit she got from TLC. She claims they made her say some of the statements that were used in her voice overs. Just like Penny, Pauline doesn't do anything she doesn't want to do, so I have a hard time believing that.

She needs some serious nutritional counseling so she can make healthy food choices and learn to cook for herself not rely on fast food. She needs to continue some sort of physical therapy (although I'm not sure how effective her own version of water walking is, she'd be better off with a trained therapist) and lastly she needs to stop her whining and just do it. I hope TLC will do a follow up show on her next year so we can see how things turn out for her. The proof will show up on the scale.

I agree that Vlog was nauseating! Excuses and more excuses! We saw Susan lose 300 pounds in the same amount of time, weighing over 600 pounds. All Pauline's crap about she can't walk she didn't feel good. Susan had the neuropathy and kept trying to walk and could not. Susan had a lot harder road but worked hard to walk and eat right. We can see through Susan and Olivia what IS possible if the person tries. So Pauline and all her bullshit. She want on and on about how they showed her final weight as 529 when it was actually 511! Would we have been impressed with 511? When Susan was 275 in the same amount of time and same starting weight? The whole story about why she rolled the Monster into the doctor's office. She should have parked it in the waiting room and walked in if she is telling the truth about the car broke down and not having the other wheel chair. She is a lazy piece of shit trying to blame every one else for the fact that she has done nothing to try to lose wieght after having been given this opportunity to get her life back.

Glad Dr. Now is not at all unnerved when all the excuses in the world are flung at him. He sees right through them.

What I can't forget is her saying she's doing the weight loss/surgery for her son but clearly didn't succeed. Guess he's not that important to her. Sad.

The look she had on her face when she was making the attempt to walk days after surgery was, "I just want to go home and eat again".

Man, I'm from Houston and all this talk of tamales is making me hungry!!  Homemade tamales are soooo good!  Pauline reminded me of the Jamaican lady in Florida.  I can't remember her name, but she had her own weight loss special(s).  It was really sad that she was claiming to follow the doctor's instructions when the cameras were filming the truth.  Pauline obviously knew more than the doctors.  She was actually getting out and about, on her scooter.  Playing Bingo and eating greasy looking food.  Silly doctors with their fancy degrees and years of experiences.

Watching Pauline's story again where Dr. Now tells her after she only lost 6 lbs in a month that he expects her to lose at least 30 lbs in a month.  Her voiceover is, "I don't know what he expects of me."  He just told you idiot.  He expects you to lose 30 lbs!  What an insufferable cow!

Dominique Lanoise.  Technically, she was Haitian and not Jamaican (I live in Florida, if you call a Haitian a Jamaican or vice versa, you will get verbally slapped, LOL) Oh boy, do I remember this story!  She died shortly after her surgery.  She made Penny and Pauline look like saints.  She would either belittle her children into bringing her food or order food delivery herself and have the person hand it to her through her window.  Like Penny and Pauline, she was also on public assistance.  I always wondered where she got all the money to pay the delivery person that handed her food through her window.

Well, she doesn't "need" to get on the scale.  She "knows" what she is doing is right, and she "feels" better.  After all, no one "knows" her own body like she does, and she doesn't "need" anyone telling her what to do.   As Dr. Phil would say "How's that working out for ya"?

My bad.  I knew she was from a Carribbean nation, couldn't remember which one.  It was sad that she thought the surgery would magically make her thin and sexy.   Even sadder that she drove some of her children away with her attitude.  I might have to watch this show more because I started exercising a little while watching.  (I would start cleaning thanks to Hoarders.)

I don't understand how many of the people on this show don't understand their situation.  It took time to gain all that weight, it will take time to lose it as well.  Sitting around playing bingo ain't gonna cut it.  Hopefully, Pauline's son will get some help, too.  Don't want to see him in a future season.

OMG. As others have said, I never thought I would despise anyone more than I did Penny, but Pauline did it. Pathetic. While I was nowhere near as heavy as any of those portrayed on this show, I had RnY gastric bypass back in 2004 and know what the requirements are. One has to get up and MOVE. It's a tool, not a magic bullet. Ugh. I was able to lose 130 pounds total. Gained back 20 but have maintained that weight ever since. Pauline could have done it, but chose not to. Her poor son.

But she got so terribly dizzy and nauseous whenever she stopped eating! Look, I went on a 1,500 calorie diet to lose a mere ten pounds. I felt dizzy and famished and my hands shook and at times I didn't feel like getting up. That's how I knew the diet was working. Dieting is not fun for anyone.

Okay, so I watched this again on the treadmill today (the Pauline-Penny types are fantastic for rage sprints)...did anyone else see that massive plate of food she had in front of her in the hospital while supposedly on an 800-calorie a day diet? Two pieces of chicken, including a wing? Those are almost all fat. No way was that hospital food, even though she was kvetching about it.

The other thing she had in common with Penny is that she controlled how much food everyone else got. It all went to her and then she begrudgingly doled it out like it was the last food on earth. It's more than addiction to food...it's addiction to power.

I'm afraid that "I pulled a muscle in my stomach" has now replaced "Where's my yellow brick road?" for the most snort-worthy utterance of this show.

Dr. Now puts them on a high protein low carb diet, and the fat is where they get their energy.  My doctor has me on the same type of diet.  I'm supposed to stay below 60 grams of carbs a day.  I need fat in my diet for energy.  (There is "good" fat and "bad" fat.)

I mostly saw this episode but was switching back and forth.  I'm sure I saw her some years ago on Dr Phil.  The station ran reruns of his show about 7 pm.

At least she would get up and move to a chair or couch, unlike Penny.

Yes we pay for all this nearly everyone uses a caretaker we pay for who lives in the same place.  It's a shame to government do anything.  A program starts small and ends up huge.  We now pay extra if a school kid has a disability thus so many have been diagnosed with add, autism, etc.  Parents who live is houses far more expensive than mine get government money to take care of their own kids.  Single parents get free ed, free daycare, food stamps, free health, can get help with transportation etc.  I've seen many of the figures and honestly it puts them on par or better with middle income payers.  No wonder so many don't work.  I think we are fools.  Oh and now they get free cell phones also.

Sacramento where she lived had a very small, like 6 stools and a couple of tables with the world's second best hamburger called TheSqueezeInn.  At lunch there was a huge line picking up pre-orders to go.   So it hit the papers that a disability violation had been filed because it was a hard fit.  Turned out to be a super fat woman who was in cahoots with a lawyer and she was paid to do this.  SqueezeInn could not do renovations they wanted because there was no room.  She could have used the patio in the back, but she wanted inn.  So they had to pay a fortune for a new location but people in Sacramento are still bitching about it.  Someone found out the name of fat woman and posted a picture of her house.  There wasn't even a ramp up the few steps at her house so she must have been able move well enough without the "monster" to physically climb those steps.  I was thinking this Pauline is big enough and brazen enough to do this.

And the best hamburger is the world was or is still the The Bucket in Eagle Rock California.  Another tiny little place with a crabby owner, 6 stools, patio in back, made burgers one way only and don't dare ask for anything else or you get an ass chewing. But best meat, bun and fixing in the world IMO.

I question that plate of food too.  Good fat would be a skinless breast of chicken, not the kind she had, especially a wing like Olderwisernow pointed out.

Weight loss is ultimately about how many calories one eats. Eat at a deficit, one will lose weight and it doesn't matter if it comes from carbs or fat or protein. Chicken with skin and a big plate of vegetables is still a low calorie meal that could easily fit into a 800 calorie plan.

Yes. It looked delicious! Plus all those vegetables looked yummy too although I doubt she ate any of them.

I have to disagree, coming from being successful at losing weight and keeping it off.   Skin is just not healthy,so

why eat it?   When people are committed to eating the best they can, its hard work and I believe in eliminating anything that is considered "bad",    The meal maybe be better than eating fried chicken and greasy potatoes and be lower in calories, but the trick is to make it as healthy and easy as possible.    Eliminating something like skin will not only be beneficial in weight loss and health, it will eliminate in time a craving for something people should avoid.    After time, you dont eat it, you no longer want it.

I learned to change my lifestyle, make things as simple as possible and be totally honest with myself. Eating unnecessary fat makes you fat, eating a lean skinless chicken breast has fat that will not add weight.

I was not willing to say eat a meal  with extra fat that would give me satisfaction for a few minutes when I worked so hard to lose weight and get healthy.

Eating the kind of canned veggies they had are full of salt.  Again, not a good choice even if its under 800 calories. Its just as much (if not more) about the choices than the calories.

Eating anything in a calorie surplus will lead to weight gain just as eating anything in a calorie deficit will lead to weight loss. It's that simple. A calorie is a calorie.

Now being healthy is a different story. If one wants to optimize health and well being, as you have, then yes, one should monitor where calories come from.

We will have to agree to disagree. :)
