that real-life person is still alive so I really hope it doesn’t go the same way as Me Before You, which I hated for that very reason.

Spoiler

This gives me hope. I will make sure to see it then.

For anyone who's interested in the story, it was also already made into a French movie, The Intouchables.  It was very funny and had a lot of heart.  I really enjoyed that version and don't hold out as much hope for this remake.

I remember hearing about The Intouchables and instantly recognized that as a remake just looking at the still from the trailer. I remember the French movie getting critical praise but it didn't materialize state side and Bryan Cranston's smaller movies generally don't make a splash so I'm not expecting much from this one.

RE: The Lion King

I'm torn because it's so close to the original it seems unnecessary. Like, I don't want to see the same shots of Pride Rock but in CGI instead of 2-D animation. The animals look good but slightly verging into that uncanny valley territory and I feel like it's going to age poorly because it looks good now but I thought that about movies in the past that now look like they were filmed with a potato because our brains are constantly adapting to the look of films produced with new technology. The baby Simba looked really cute but I worry about how expressive the animals can be since they're realistic and don't have those big cartoon eyes. I wonder how natural they'll go or if they'll stretch things a little more and go with what we've saw in the Detective Pikachu trailer. It's a delicate line. The landscape shot looked gorgeous but the non close up shots of the animals were dull to me. This movie cannot possibly be as vibrant as the original cartoon and the animals won't be as expressive. That said, it's still an amazing voice cast and I might be motivated enough to get the best experience of the visuals if it gets good reviews and see this in the theater.

I totally agree with you and actually said this exact thing to my family last night because they are all so excited to see it and don’t understand my hesitation.  My kids’ response was that the animation version came out so long ago it was practically ancient.  Ouch. 😂

I saw Mary Poppins Returns just the other day and got to experience back to back the trailers for Disney's 3 live action movie coming out this year. Dumbo and Aladdin has made me curious about seeing them, while The Lion King left me wondering why?? For Dumbo and Aladdin I can see the purpose of those movies because they are live action in the sense there are actual human actors on screen interacting with the standard Hollywood CGI characters/backdrops so I can see a point to re-doing - especially Dumbo. It looks like a new story has been created around the simple original story. Admittedly it's a bit too early for Aladdin for me to fully understand why but its at least there and I can re-experience Menken's music on the big screen. The Lion King on the other hand I just don't get (ignoring the money making aspect). It's not live action, its just redoing the story with CGI animation. If they went the path of Babe I would understand the point, but as it stands I really, really don't get it when you already have an animated version in existence. I had a similar issue with the recent Beauty and the Beast - what's the point if everything is going to be CGI. Although based on the reactions in the theatre I'm the only one who didn't care about The Lion King movie.

Did they just "I Tonya" Ted Bundy?   Hopefully that is just the trailer and not the tone of the movie.

With I Tonya it worked, but with Ted Bundy it just seems so disrespectful.

I've been actually looking forward to this since it was announced. I really enjoy Zack Efron, but this doesn't look promising.

The Beach Bum looks amazing!!!!!

The Fast & the Furious franchise really has just become a superhero franchise at this point.  At least when it pertains to Hobbs.  But now we've got Idris Elba with a freaking supersuit?!

Still, I can't deny I enjoy the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.  Even if I have to keep ignoring that Owen Shaw was a villain who

KILLED poor Han.

  Sniff!

But he saved Dom's kid, so it evens out.

With Vanessa Kirby playing kid sister Shaw, I sure hope Dame Helen's in this.

With the way franchise rolls (no pun intended) they can always

bring Han back.

They could be working for Mr. Nobody's agency in some deep cover.
And do these really need to be spolierized? The movie in question has been out for years.

Tolkien. Starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins. I'm a big LOTR fan, and regard JRRT as the best author of all time. As such, I really don't know what to think of this. There's certainly some interesting things in his life. I suppose enough highlights to fill two hours. But you just know they'll lean heavily on WWI being such a big influence on his work. It was in some ways, but there's a lot that wasn't. Was his son or any member of the Tolkien family consulted? Does it draw material from the Carpenter biography?

There's just a lot of room for this to be a complete mess, and I'm nervous.

So evidently

Ellie is the one that dies and comes back a zombie instead of Gage.  Was shocked by that -- it's got to be awkward for some Stephen King purists who might be upset "Well, of course we don't want either of the kids to actually DIE, but..."

So this is happening.  And supposedly this Chucky is more "evil robot" than "supernaturally possessed."  Thanks, I'll wait for the SyFy show that will actually have Brad Dourif...

I know it is probably just an alphabetical order thing, but Seth Rogen getting billed over Charlize "Freaking Furiosa, Oh, and She Has an Oscar Too, Dammit!" does make me roll my eyes.

That said, I'll probably see it just because Bob Odenkirk is playing the President.  The idea that Saul (or Jimmy) somehow wheeling and dealing his way into the White House is an entertaining thought!

Some wag at The A.V.Club asked, "What's the unbelievable plot point, Charlize Theron as SoS or Rogen having a shot with her?"

So, I see 1989 (both originals were released that year) has returned.

Speaking of which, why is Rogen's character dressed like it's still 1989?

RE: Velvet Buzzsaw

Love the camp. Hate the horror. I probably won't be able to sit through this.

RE: Slut in a Good Way

This looks really fun. I wish it was in color.

RE: Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

Sorry, I'm not here for a quirky, modern Nancy Drew who looks like an older version of Little Orphan Annie. I only made it a minute in.

RE: Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile

Meh. It feels like the kind of Oscar bait that doesn't get any nominations.

RE: Yesterday

At the beginning I was resistant but by the end I thought "yeah, I'd watch that." I hope they have something planned for the concept beyond just that dude's boring life and some celebrity cameos.

RE: Tolkien

Some lovely period-piece-y moments. And some very dark moments. I mean in terms of lighting. I can't tell if that's a bad stylistic choice or if the movie is a bit cheap.

RE: MA

Mostly my reaction to that set up is... what? Why? But I do like the twist on the friendly, even "maternal" black woman magically entering these kids lives... and then turning on them. If we're to believe the trailer it seems like she was the high school outcast or something like that. I don't watch horror but I hope they find a way to justify all the craziness so it's more like Carrie and less like this psychotic woman is just doing a lot of random things because it's a horror movie and everyone must die. I think this one hinges on the backstory.

RE: Long Shot

I don't need this movie. But it looks kind of cute.  I feel like Charlize can make anything work.

RE: The Dirt

At first I was like, cool, generic fake 80's glam metal band. And then it turned out to be Motley Crue and I was a lot less interested. Douglas Booth is pretty attractive. Idk, we'll see how bored I get. It is on Netflix.

The story of the men who killed Bonnie & Clyde:

It is still strange as fuck to me that Kevin Costner became relevant again in this decade. I guess he just had to wait until he got old enough to play the mature older man once he aged out of his young All-American hunk phase. And Hatfields and McCoys was the perfect comeback vehicle for him.

It doesn't really feel like he re-invented himself; he just became the logical evolution of his former character type.

Is it just me, or does this look terrible? I can't even put my finger on why. Not like I have that much affection for the Perlman movies, or the original comics. Just something. Though that cover of Smoke on the Water doesn't help.

I'd love to go and see another superhero movie that isn't the MCU. Maybe the next one.

Yeah...it doesn't look good.  I thought that from the first trailer I saw.  I can't quite put my finger on why either.  I liked the Perlman ones quite a bit, but not so much that I'm closed off to the idea of a reboot.  That being said, I think part of the problem is the guy playing Hell Boy (and I have no idea who it is) is trying to channel Perlman a bit and really not succeeding.

I keep seeing commercials for some movie called Cliffs of Freedom. I keep thinking it's a parody commercial, like the pony express one for insurance or an SNL skit.

In surprising news, Netflix have announced a new comics adaptation. Which one, you ask? It's called Warrior Nun, and is based on the comic Warrior Nun Areala. It was one of the 'bad girl' comics from the mid 90s, before we grew up and internet porn became a thing, let alone real and healthy relationships. See also Lady Death, Avengelyne, Witchblade, Darkchylde, and a zillion others I've forgotten from around that time.

However, it has an established cast and producer. If Netflix put serious money behind this, maybe it won't be as cheap and nasty as I imagine. While I'm not expecting high art, maybe it'll hit the vibe of fun if you don't take it seriously. Nothing wrong with that.

A few days ago, I contemplated the sci fi career of Natalie Portman, specifically its quality. As if someone at Fox read my post, we got a trailer for her new movie, Lucy in the Sky. However, it looks pretty rough. Maybe another trailer will do the trick, but I'm currently not feeling it.

Loosely based on the story of Lisa Nowak, the astronaut who went a little bit crazy a few years back.

And finally, damnit! I'd like to enjoy a Natalie Portman movie other than Leon. But she seems intent on not doing anything I actually like.

Noah Hawley's directing, so I'm definitely in. But I recognize that Hawley's an acquired taste.

Yes. From what I've seen of his other projects, he isn't for me. Still, I hold out hope for a better trailer.

Nearly everything I said about Warrior Nun the other day, applies to Danger Girl. Only this one will allegedly be a movie, and doesn't have a platform or cast announced. But it was still part of the 90s borderline porn line of comics. Will anything seriously develop from this? My bet is no. But I've been wrong before.

Still waiting for Lady Death, though. That would be amusingly ridiculous.

Cue the obvious "Captain Marvel has taken a strange turn" jokes.  With a bonus Dophinder from Deadpool sighting!

On a more serious note, with respect to Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, this does look like the worst of every quirky, twee indie film that has ever been put out.
