S48.E05: Amy Schumer / Steve Lacy

There's still a day to go, but as of right now the traditional Thursday promo with host/MG/cast member is still not up. I have to wonder if the Ego backstage tour (which I posted in another thread) is the replacement. Some fans commented on how downbeat these photos looked compared to what you usually see, which along with the lack of promos makes me wonder if they are having a tough time backstage this week with illness or other factors.

I guess we'll see how much they can cut and paste together tomorrow night.

Hmmm.  May be a soft pass this time.  Amy used to be so funny, like when she would appear on the Professor Blastoff podcast with her pals David Huntsberger, Kyle Dunnegan, and Tig Nataro, and in the first run of Inside Amy Schumer, for which Dunnegan and Nataro wrote.

Hmmm x2.  The video-clip wasn't bad.

Outside of the horrible Cold Open, I'm  enjoying the show. I really enjoyed Amy's monologue. Very warm and engaging. And she totally sold the matzo ball soup sketch.  And the Looker parody was hilarious.

I can understand why the Covid ad would rub people the wrong way, but the open for me was much worse.  The whole idea of it just didn't gel. And they still have no clue on how to write Biden. None at all.

I really really liked the jury sketch.  I found that so funny.  So far I've liked everything, but The Looker sketch was too crass for me.  Of course I've liked the episodes this season that did NOT have a musical guest as a host, LOL.

I thought Amy's monologue was very, very funny. The first 3 or so sketches were really good. I like Sarah better every week. She's really grown on me.

I figured out why I like Sarah.  Her movements and line deliveries are so big and exaggerated.  It also makes me realize why others may not like her, but I find her so captivating and funny.

Yikes, I was shocked to see Colin brandishing a replica gun on Update.  There was really no necessity for that.

Isn't this Jets skit kind of a ripoff of a well known Will Ferrell standard?

Cecily’s trucker thing on WU was basically an attempt to repeat her clown abortion bit, but way less effective and poorly written. I get it’s an important issue they want to address but maybe another cast member could’ve been given a chance to do a different take on it.

Cold Open: “BIG YIKES” is right. The writers have no idea how to satirize the Dems running, let’s trot out some weirdos and celebrity impressions. Kenan as Tracy Morgan is certainly snake eating its own tail territory. We needed more of that. “Sugar-free White Castle” is killing me.

Monologue: Finally, someone used to doing live comedy!

Soup: Yep, the social faux pas of wanting to eat food during a friend venting about their life. Loved Kenan’s internal monologue song.

Covid: want a week away from people? Get Covid! Love it. Of course you HAVE Covid, but it’s time away from everyone.

Jury: Hey, it’s the murder trial Covid got you out of! the Bowen and Sarah were a combo I never knew I needed. You never think about juries being overly expressive.

Twitter: Oh it’s a town hall sketch about terrible twitter users. We get a porn bot, a COD gamer that doxxed a kid, Punkie representing Black Twitter, and of course Trump.

The Looker: This got gross quick. Apparently based on The Watcher?

WU: From now on, Kyle Irving will only pretend to be antisemetic. There were a lot of jokes that would’ve been right at home in a joke swap, like Colin’s n-word joke and Che’s with the Chinese satellite and the smiling sun.

Cecily’s bit was great. The timing of the honking foley being off made it so much better.

Jets: Yeah, that’s typical Jets fan behavior. Even the cop yelling at the kids in Bills gear.

Pinx: I laughed at “biblical.”

Fire: This was pretty painful. I got a chuckle out of “baklava or balaclava?”, and Bowen’s whole look.

Uno: Andrew really killed it in this one. Talking about big penis therapy removed the male stigma against going to therapy. Umm…okay?

Big Dumb Hat: I miss the pornstar sketches, it gave me similar vibes. But I liked this. Big, dumb hats really do go well with big, dumb engagement rings and small, dumb, dogs. Worn by women who totally post a picture of their wedding every single day. It’s like if half of my Instagram feed was a commercial.

Next week is the post-election show with…Dave Chappelle. I get it, it seems like tradition at this point, but SNL has to know about the…everything he’s been up to since the last time he’s hosted, right?

Steve Lacey was pretty pleasant, to listen to and to look at. I didn’t know who this guy is, but I liked him.

Aw dammit, Global cut off the beginning of Amy's goodbye.  I guess it will be on Twitter.

Andrew Dismukes wearing glasses as the dumb husband in the Covid commercial was making me feel things......

I love when Bowen said "Oh now he's trying to silence three women of colour?"

It irritates me so much that they play this coy game without putting any effort into creating characters to represent these racist and sexist personae.  And Jost smirking about the Pelosi joke left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't know...maybe I'm aging out of this show.  I did like the monologue, the soup sketch was okay, jury sketch a bit better than okay, Big Dum Hats made me laugh a lot.  Update was fine - Cecily was great.

Otherwise...eh.

I liked this episode! I thought the season started off terrible, but this is two weeks in a row that I thought the show was great and the consensus seems to be it got worse, not better.

I often have no interest in the musical guest, but this one I thought was so bad, I felt bad FOR him and wondered if he always sounds that bad, or if he was just having a bad night. But then I see someone else thought he was good.

So I guess it's opposite day for me.

I don't think it's the consensus. At least from the little I've seen.  Outside of the Cold Open, I think it's the season's best by a mile.

No, you weren't.

I realize that it was meant to be silly, and I don't think anyone is going to run out and intentionally get covid because of it. But it definitely helps reinforce the commonly held idea that covid is no big deal anymore.

I was definitely 50% pissed off, 50% amused.  I say only 50% because I kind of think it's futile to cater comedy to the insane, so why not go ahead and write for the people smart enough to get the joke, but at the same time, it kind of felt like the writers are not taking it seriously either, so I don't know.  I guess I just don't care enough anymore to be pissed off.

I agree. I called my cousin, who has an adult son who has autism, and she laughed about Amy trying to decide if certain behavior was an autism thing or a male thing.

I thought the writers did a good job of showing that they were making fun of people who downplay Covid, but I can certainly see how other people would disagree.

I liked Big Dumb Hat, Soup, and WU.

I Did Not Like Cecily's Clown Abortion Bit On Week End Update ! How Ever, I DO Agree That This Was Poorly Written ! Cecily Would Just Sit There And Then Would Drive The Truck ! It Was Like Cecily Was Adlibbing ! They Did Not Know Whether She Should Talk About Being A Trucker OR Whether To Have Her Drive The Truck ! I Know They Are Glad To Have Cecily Back, But, Molly Should Have Been On Week End Update Instead ! They Are Not Hardly Using Molly ! Maybe, Molly Will Not Stay Very Long ! Also, They Are Doing One Commentary This Season Instead OF Around Three Commentaries On Week End Update !

I Thought Kenan Did A Good Job OF Being Tracy ! I Also Liked Kenan Singing While There Was Talking About Their Problem And Eating During That ! ! ! I Liked The Corona Virus Sketch, But, I Can Understand People Thinking That Was In Bad Taste Because People Are Still Dying From Having The Corona Virus ! I Did Not Quite Understand The Looker Because Usually You Would Find Out Who The Looker Was ! I Guess Amy WAS The Looker And She Wrote Those Notes Herself To Get Attention by Saying Look What I Did Over And Over ! Yes, I Think I Also Thought That Would Have Been The Time To Do A Joke Swap On Week End Update ! Cecily DID Do A Good Job OF Having The Timing OF The Honking Be OFF ! I Think That Is Why They Are Having Dave Chappelle Because He HAS Been In The News ! I Also Do Not Know Steve Lacy, but, I Thought He Was Okay As A Musical Guest ! !

I think they were just saying people fake covid to get out of stuff.  I don’t think it goes deeper than that.  They had a test that’s always positive, Heidi said she had it “again,” they mentioned getting out of jury duty etc.  I think it’s funny because it’s true.

My brother mentioned recently that a friend of his had Covid. I expressed my sympathy, and he was like, meh, he's already had it twice, it's no big deal! So there is that attitude out there.

Amy did a great job. I've never found Chappelle funny, and, adding in his crass remarks of late, have no desire to watch him next week.

Have any of these writers actually watched a Biden speech or two? Plus the actor's delivery is terrible.

I know Amy has been ill in the past, but is she still? I was shocked at how bloated her face was last night.

Steve Lacey-not a great voice, but kind of charming, laid-back vibes. Also very retro, which I liked cuz I'm old.

Think the Covid sketch is also leaning heavily into the facts that (American) employers have traditionally been very stingy about sick leave and that women have disproportionately been responsible for “second shift” (domestic) work. Regular colds, flu, etc., have not always been an excuse, but suddenly there was this pandemic that people took super seriously and required quarantines… finally people could actually drop the rope when they felt sick.

Yeah  And I think that's the one line that I didn't like because employers are back to not having to provide sick leave for COVID so the one woman saying she'd get paid sick leave is only for people who already have it or the PTO banked up.

The skit didn't make me mad because I got what they were trying to say.  At the same time, I think they could have gone harder/farther with it which is why I kind of loved the "fake positive" COVID stuff at the end.

Overall, I enjoyed most of this episode.  I fast forwarded through the cold open and the musical guest (although I actually recognized the song he sang for a change) but the rest was funny to watchable.

I thought the Covid skit was pretty good. Though I haven’t tried it yet, it definitely is a good way to get out of doing things you don’t want to do & I’ve considered doing it.   I love when Amy talks about her husband’s autism because she clearly is able to “ get him” & love him in spite of or sometimes because of it.

I think it's a combo of people faking and people not taking it seriously anymore. Where I work, it seems like every week a different technician is out for a week or more after they call in with Covid. Now, keep in mind, I seem to work at Trumper central and these same technicians all basically refused to wear masks 2 years ago when I first started there and out of like 60 of them, I'd be surprised if half of them were vaccinated. Also keep in mind, they don't have to do anything more than call in and say I'm sick, I have a fever, I'm going for a test and maybe call in a few days later saying they are still sick (this has been an endless cycle for the 2 years I've worked there). I'm sure some of them have no doubt had it, but I'm also sure that some of them have also basically had a week or more off because they wanted some time off and they knew they could call in with Covid, no questions asked. I wouldn't be surprised if this same thing is happening at all sorts of workplaces, not just mine.

Random and silly, but I love random and silly, and Amy excels at this.

Also..I saw women in big dumb hats at vintage markets the past two weekends. What does that say about me?

Steve Lacey-not a great voice, but kind of charming, laid-back vibes. Also very retro, which I liked cuz I'm old.

I liked him. I'm old too. And frankly, his performances were the most enjoyable part of the show for me. I've NEVER said that before.

The CO was bad. Not at all funny. Painful to watch.

I'm 50/50 on the monologue. I like some of Amy's comedy, but I am just tired of raunchy stuff and language. Did I tell you I was old? I did really like her line: Autism or just a man?

I thought the matzo ball soup sketch started off really good. I liked the premise. But once again the writers don't know how to end a sketch.

I guess the jurors sketch was funny, but I just found the three annoying.

Twitter sketch. Meh.

The Looker sketch. Too raunchy.

WU was pretty good. I got a big laugh from the Moist and Slurp bad sounding baby names. I also liked Che's joke, "If the sun can smile, would it kill you ladies to try it?"

I'm confused about Colin's N-word joke. Do people say the N-word when they hurt themselves? The F-word, the MF-word, and sh*t make more sense to me. The N-word?

I didn't like the Jets tailgate party sketch.

Pinx got kind of funny with all the zoo animals getting excited and the vultures circling.

The fire sketch wasn't funny. I still don't like the new guy who played the reporter. Plus, once again, the show is having characters speak with an exaggerated southern accent for laughs. This didn't used to bother me, but it's a stereotype, it's lazy, and I'm sure it's insulting to southern people.

Big Penis Therapy wasn't funny either. Neither was Big Dumb Hat.

All in all a very disappointing ep for me.

As I said, I enjoyed Steve Lacy. I hadn't heard of him before. I was glad to see him at the end without the Big Dumb Sunglasses. BTW, what was the arcing arrows behind him during his performances? I don't know if they mean anything -- I suppose they do.

Oh, the COVID sketch. I thought it was good AND funny. There are times when I wish I would get sick -- though not with COVID -- when I want to hibernate and not deal with anyone, so this resonated with me. Also, I loved when Heidi was pushing her husband and kids out the door, and Andrew says, "But, uh, what do they eat?"

Yeah, People Don't Use The N Word That Way ! Yeah, The Ending Was THE Only Funny Thing About Pinx ! Yeah, IT Seemed To Me The Only Thing About Big Dumb Hats Was That Amy 's Hats Kept Getting Bigger AND Bigger AND Bigger ! ! ! I Also Liked When Andrew Asked What Do The Children Eat !

I thought it was very funny, although I don't think Covid is funny or people faking it is funny. I've had Covid and it wasn't "having a bad cold for 3 days". More like 6 weeks. But I must confess that I've thought about faking it before to avoid things. I won't, but I've thought about it. That's why it was funny to me.

My only knowledge of Steve Lacy is that he yells at paying attendees at his shows. Grabbed somebody's phone and threw it across the stage too. That's all I know. Look it up if you've a mind to.

I like Amy.

Amy's naturally funny, so there were some laughs (which is not a given these days).

The Covid commercial reminded me of when I had surgery and had to take some time off work, I enjoyed it so much, it was blissful.

I don't need to be preached to about abortion (Cecily Strong), especially when they barely put in any effort to disguise it as a comedy bit.  But the midterms are coming up, so I knew there was going to be some political statements.

People have been using illness as an excuse since the beginning of time. It’s a good excuse because no one wants you around if you have it.  Its like pink eye.
I think the skit was funny.  Laughing about covid is ok, I don’t think people will be like, “well snl says it’s not bad so it must not be!”
