The only reason I got FJ was because of the song 'The Battle of New Orleans', so it was the only battle I knew the name of that was before the Civil War and might have been celebrated as a holiday.

Would they have accepted the White Sox? epinephrine, Concentration, Malfoy, and surprisingly for me Dura Mater, I mean I sorta knew mater=mother but the dura popped out also w/o me being consciously aware that I knew it.

As soon as I saw the category, I knew I didn't have much of a chance to get FJ right, and I was correct!  I really don't know much about war history, so I did not come up with anything.

But I did get the TS of Malfoy, Concentration, epinephrine, and dura mater, so I have that going for me.

My first thought was the Battle of Bunker Hill, but having lived in the Boston area I remembered that it was in June, and still sort of a holiday in Boston.  (Also it was fought on Breed's Hill, not Bunker Hill.)  So, remembering the song, I managed to get the Battle of New Orleans in time.

Yesterday I got The Velveteen Rabbit before Ken finished the clue, but not out of love for the book——more like revisited childhood PTSD about what happened to the rabbit.
 

Today I got the TS of Tchaikovsky because I thought I heard Russian titles, but J-Archive does not seem to be showing that under COMPOSE YOURSELF for $600?

Also got dura mater.

 
It seems viewers (and Ken) prefer it when long-running champs don’t have runaway games. Today Ray was behind in the beginning, but then had more than twice the other players’ scores going into FJ, which is kind of anticlimactic. The previous 2 games were more exciting.
Maybe the rules could be tweaked for that? 
ETA:   
Like maybe when the champ (even a first-time winner) has more than double the other players, the one of the other two who gets the highest score gets $3000 instead of $2k.

But then if the champ accidentally bet too much and didn’t know FJ, they would lose and the $3K rule would not kick in.

Oy. I think Wheel Of Fortune has some confusing special deals like this. 
Maybe not.

They need to go back to a 5 (or even 10) game limit.

I did quite well during the main game, but no idea for FJ. I figured it had to be a Revolutionary War battle, but even that wasn’t correct.

I have nothing against Ray, he seems like a pleasant enough man, but nothing about him inspires me to root for him. I’m ready for a new champ.

I'm on Team Ray I think he might be one of my favorite Jeopardy champions ever, I don't think the show should go back to the five game limit. I think long running champions increase interest in Jeopardy and inspire more people to try out. I've known Final Jeopardy every day this week.

The White Sox was the name of the team. I was a bit surprised they accepted “Black Sox” as the answer because while that was the name of the scandal, the clue asked for the team name.

I can't see that happening because superchamps create buzz and the possibility of going on a long streak and earning hundreds of thousands of dollars probably attracts more applicants. And although having the same champion on day after day may drive some viewers to take a break that is probably offset by new viewers attracted by the buzz. 

I like the extra dimension of wondering whether a superchamp will extend the streak and break a record, even when I am rooting for the champion to fail. When Ray's streak started I thought I would be surprised if he lasted this long but he has managed to dominate  even when he gets off to a slow start.

I absolutely agree with this. I also think there many more casual viewers who are attracted by the winning streaks than loyal viewers who are disgruntled enough to step away. Production is doing its best to position Jeopardy as an intellectual sporting event, and an essential part of sports fandom is a familiar player/team to root for.

As someone who enjoys a good winning streak, I also wish there were a way to put the individual games on a level playing field. It’s a known fact that buzzer acumen plays a huge part in winning, which obviously gives returning players an advantage that compounds every day. I would definitely support removing this advantage, somehow, but I’m not sure how that could happen. Maybe change up the duration between when Ken finishes reading and when they can buzz in? Some days it’s 2 seconds, some days 3, they just have to watch for the lights?

I like him and I'm happy to see him keep going, but there have been a few challengers that I would have been happy to see return, as well.

I have never liked superchamps and didn't understand those viewers who passionately rooted for them. But I have fallen madly, stupidly in love with Ray and hold my breath until he safely wins each game. I apologize for my distain for previous superchamp admirers. The heart wants what the heart wants.  Of course, now that I have admitted my affection, Ray will probably go down in flames in today's game.

Had a miserable game. We had to watch it on YouTube, as our local channel has been off the air two days in a row now (winds, I'm thinking). But I'm grateful for YouTube. Oddly, it's not as pleasant an experience, and I can't quite figure out why.

In truth, I’m less bummed at the thought of Mayim than the imminent loss of Ken. He brings a lot to the show, and I will miss him.

I’m still a little miffed by one of the answers from Tuesday’s show, where a BMS should have been requested:

From chapter 1 of this classic: "On a bright may morning in 1888, John, Lord Greystoke, and Lady Alice sailed from Dover..."

The contestant answered “What is Tarzan?”, which is not the name of the book. It’s just the name of the main character.

Imagine if we saw this clue instead:

“This 1960 children's novel, by American writer Scott O'Dell, tells the story of a twelve year old girl named Karana, who is stranded alone for years off the California coast.”

Or:

“In this 1954 novel by William Golding, a group of British boys are stranded on an uninhabited island and attempt to govern themselves, with disastrous results.”

Could I confidently say, “What is Island?” to the first example, and  “What is Lord?” to the second? I think not, so why should “What is Tarzan?” be any different? Tarzan of the Apes is the only legitimate answer.

December 29:

I have redeemed myself a bit tonight! In J! I ran Classic Flute Rock, Wearing Your Food, and Don't Get…; missed one in Sheer Misery and two in the others. In DJ I ran Break the Code, missed two in TV, and one each in everything else. Did not know FJ (I suck at mythology).

My only missed clue was bradycardia (DD). Though that was the only one in the second round, and there were only three in the first.

I loved Ken's sadness at being out of flute rock.

Man, I am sucking at FJ this week.  I feel like I should have gotten tonight's, and did the forehead smack when the correct response was revealed, but I also said Luna.  Oh well.  It was still a really good game -- anyone could have won!

The only TS I got was bradycardia.

I can't believe we had a whole category about flute rock without a Jethro Tull clue!  Ian Anderson is the king of flute rock!

C'mon now, how does "Flute Rock" not have a Jethro Tull clue?!? Perhaps J6...

One of the many things I will miss when Ken is gone is that he always repeats the category on Daily Doubles, FJs and also for the final clue on the board.

Can't anyone beat this guy? He's given them enough opportunities in the first games lately (except for yesterday when Ken announced that if Ray won that game he'd qualify for TOC--Ray finished the first game with $8,200).  Re: the swiveling? He only does it when the game is on...not during introductions & the chats.

I never exactly disliked Mayim, but I was surprised to realize I liked Ken much more than I thought I would. I’m hoping with Mayim it’s like how some athletes do training at high altitude or with weights - after her stint with the celebrities she’ll come back ready to deal with the “regular” game.

Sadly not (the clue was about Gerry Rafferty) but since you mentioned it I went to look and got all 12 correct. :)

Sometimes books become known by an abbreviated title that is deemed acceptable. Thus we have Alice in Wonderland rather than Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz rather than The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, or Tom Jones rather than The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling. 

That was a really exciting game today. I love it when all three are serious contenders right up to the end. I did wonder whether they wanted the Greek or the Roman name or both in FJ.

I don't have a single shit to give whether Ken or Mayim is hosting a game.

This was the first game I watched this week.  Normally I don't see Thursday games, but the fucking Cowboys scored right at 7:00, so I said, nope, taking a break, and switched to J! temporarily.  I'm glad I did, as that was a great game.  I was really rooting for Emily (and, on a shallow note, loved her shirt).

I didn't keep track of my performance, since I wasn't watching in my office, but I did pretty well other than the TV category in DJ.  I didn't know any of the shows, and could only come up with two correct responses.  And, of course, I had no idea for FJ.

They gave both in the clue so I figured it didn't matter which goddess you named.

I was really searching my brain for Aurora but Eos popped up instead. No ts's for me this game.

I was worried for Ray this game; he started so slowly and those women were fast!

So it all came down to FJ and Ray got lucky there.

I'll chime in with the rest of you - though it was the Mr who went there and not me. I went with Tim Weisburg before the clues were revealed. I have an album of his somewhere.

I groaned when the category was revealed - I suck at Gods and Goddesses. I was just getting to "Dawn" when the time went out (after considering Moon - didn't know Luna was a goddess), and probably wouldn't have gotten to Aurora.

Other than that, I finally had a decent game after a string of miserable ones. I ran Flute and Don't Get Up, and almost ran Dragons and TV (I couldn't remember Elle's first name, and knew "Fanning" wasn't going to cut it as an answer for this one). And I got at least three in most categories. Maybe it's because we watched it an hour earlier on YouTube (since our station seems to be out).

Oh, thank goodness, I didn’t jinx Ray! I was really worried. I don’t know how long my heart can take it. I hate runaway games, but now I’m praying for them. Oh, Ray, you are completely upturning my Jeopardy! Life.

I'd never heard of Eos, but once Ken said "or Aurora" I thought, "Oh, that makes sense -- dawn, morning" because I once read a story in which people named their baby Aurora and explained the "goddess of the dawn" myth.  But just based on the clue, my mind never got past the processing, please wait stage.

I knew because I once looked up why Eosinophils (a type of blood cell) are called that. To simplify, in the standard stain we use in the blood lab, they stain a beautiful pink-orange color, so they are named after the goddess of the dawn!!! This was never explained to me in school or training, but now I always tell new trainees and students. Reactions... vary 😂

Interesting.  From a lifetime of studying my cats' lab reports, I know of eosinophils (and that I don't want them to have too many of them), but never once thought about the name.  As I said, my limited religion/mythology knowledge didn't include the character Eos, and while I had picked up Aurora, I couldn't come up with her for FJ.  Maybe now the goddess of the dawn thing, being reminded of it annually, will be implanted enough somewhere in my memory I might come up with it on a different clue.

Oh!  That's the brand of lip balm I recently picked up in a multi-pack at Costco (since they stopped carrying Chapstick and this was on sale for cheaper than their Burt's Bees pack).  Okay, so I'd heard (yet not retained the name) of eos (because, of course, the brand is titled evolution of smooth, not Evolution of Smooth), but not Eos.

After all this, I next time it comes up, I better add Eos/Aurora to my tiny religion/mythology clues I can actually get right arsenal.

That's right; their logo is all lower case. Whoever wrote their wikipedia entry should fix their capitalization. ;)

December 30: Ending the year on a meh note.
77% / 47% / 62%

Not bad in the first round. Ran Friend Zone, missed two in Diana Ross and 4-Letter "X" Rated Words and one each in the other three. Terrible second round. Let's not get into it. (Well, I only missed two in Census, Alliteration and Shakespeare's Contemporaries, but I missed 3, 3, and 4 in the others.) There were no TSes in the first round, and only four in the second. I got none of them.

FJ was an instaget, thanks to the Morning Brew newsletter's "Pictures of the Year" edition from this morning, which included this picture (and a description that started with the sentence "The water level at Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir, sank in July to its lowest level since it was first filled in 1937."):
