Yes, there was actually some suspense until Cris hit those two DD's and bet big in DJ. I don't buy that he was hanging back in the first round on purpose. There were many times when it was obvious early on that he was going to have a huge runaway.

I knew Henry Fonda and the House of Lords. No idea of FJ, but I knew it was not Anne of Green Gables.

I didn't know the author's name and the only association I have for Sarah, Plain and Tall was the TV movie with Glenn Close so I didn't even know the book was considered a children's book. I thought about things like What Katy Did and Pollyanna. L M Montgomery is too familiar to me for Anne to have crossed my mind.

I had no idea for FJ - I did read Sarah, Plain and Tall as a child but it didn’t really stick and never would have occurred to me. I do, however, know that Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables and that it takes place nowhere near the Prairies.

I really REALLY thought Xanni was going to win. But as soon as Cris hit that DD and doubled his score, it was over.

You could see her getting pleased with herself early on. I don’t mean that in a bad way, just in an “OMG, I might have a chance against this super champ!” kind of way. But then as she saw it all slipping away, you could see the light go out of her face.

If middle guy had just not answered after it was mathematically hopeless for him, Xanni would have had the chance to at least make it not a runaway. Not that I would expect any contestant to ever do that.

I really thought Cris was done, but then he hit the DD. I was cheering for Xanni, though.

I blame "Ordinary People."  Nobody ever heard Pachelbel until the chorus was rehearsing it in "Ordinary People" and then, all of a sudden, it was EVERYWHERE. It's Robert Redford's fault - he directed the movie.

Same here. If she had only managed to hit at least one of those DDs… it just goes to show how much luck plays a role in this game. Good for her, though. If there’s another second chance tournament, I hope she gets a slot.

My best guess for FJ was Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Feh.

Xanni was so close there for a bit!  I hate runaways and am no fan of Cris, so I was rooting hard for her.  She played a great game.

I drew a total blank on FJ!  All I kept thinking of was Heidi lol

Anne of Green Gables took place in Canada, specifically PEI.  SpaT took place in the U.S. I knew FJ! was not AoGG, but darned if I could come up with anything else.

FJ was an instaget for me, from all those years working in a bookstore.  Although I did answer "Sarah, Plain and Tall" rather than with the character's last name.

I had a pretty good game.  Ran Slang, Movies, British History, Animal Names & TV Abbrev., and got all but one in Novel, Foot, 6 Letter Words, Major and Globe.  I got Henry Fonda and House of Lords.

But seriously, I think there's a case to be made that it's a valid way to express the character's name.  No incorrect information added, unique identifying information given.

On the other hand, if they ruled it wrong, I don't think I'd feel I could complain.  It's hard to say without having read all the fine print that's only furnished to contestants.

I'd have complained if it had been ruled incorrect.

I love the Canon in D Major, but it does get overused.

She did play a really great game.  I disagree with the concept of the Second Chance Tournament, but if they do have another one, she'd be a shoe-in based on their criteria for the first one.

I got Henry Fonda and House of Lords (maybe watching The Crown has helped me out). I was a little surprised that no one got Fonda, but then it's a really old movie based on an old book (I love them both, but then again, I'm an old woman 🤣)

I came up with Caddie Woodlawn (which derived not from being old, but having taken Children's Lit in Library School and read a ton of children's books). It nearly matches the clue - but it wasn't on the prairie, but on the "frontier" (Wisconsin at the time). Brink wrote the book.

It wasn't a great game for me. I was tired. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I just read SPandT as an ebook from the library.  Very short, like 40 pages.  I really enjoyed it.

A tough game for me.  My only ts was Le Sûreté.

I wasn't really hoping Cris would lose but I was hoping Xanni would win.

I've heard of Sarah, Plain and Tall but didn't know it was a children's book.  I was actually annoyed that all three contestants guessed Anne of Green Gables.  Since the story is so popular, people should at least know where it was set, or at least that it wasn't set on the prairies.

"Reversing the story of this heroine" made me think of The Paper Bag Princess.

I knew that FJ was not Anne of Green Gables but I did not know the answer.  

Cris spelled Ann without an E which was adding insult to injury. 😉 Although, to be fair, he probably never read the book.

I'm kinda slow tonight, apparently. In J! I ran Annual Events and How Tall/Long/High?, but missed two politicians and three in everything else. Did a little better in DJ…ran Silent Letter, missed one Nobel Literature Prize Winner, and two in everything else.

Did not get FJ.

Got all the DDs and the TS of white oak, Cairo, chocolate (I was surprised that was a TS).

Paul Ryan still looks the same…. I love that scene in Deep Blue Sea. Best part of the whole movie.

Cris had me scared, there! 😨

Re FJ: James? Who is James??? Granted, I knew what case they were talking about, but I thought it was Ferguson v Board of Education. But at least "Ferguson" was part of a famous court case.

I knew theobromine was in chocolate, but I had no idea where bears would get access to it. I guess bears must live where cacao grows, but I wasn't sure that was the case. Cacao sure doesn't grow around here, where bears abound.

I got quite a laugh out of Ken's comment about "the famously fun Mike Pence".

Bears live where people go to visit with picnic baskets, backpacks and cars with chocolate in them.

I just saw a video of a bear opening the door to a van, climbing in, and coming out with a bag of popcorn in his mouth as he trundled back into the woods. I'm sure if there had been chocolate in the van, he would have grabbed that instead.

I made the mistake of not running through a list of possible Kennedys after rejecting JFK for the one photo. I also guessed Teddy Roosevelt for the glasses but got the rest of the category.

Surprised that no one knew GBS, especially after Cris ruled out Wilde (despite the photo in which Shaw is too old for Wilde who died in his 40s.) Irish is not enough on its own.

Can’t remember if it was today or yesterday but I appreciate Chris pointing out the high cost of housing in NJ. It is my home state and I knew as a young adult I’d have to leave if I ever wanted to buy a house. Cruel taxes too.

It was yesterday, and I was nodding in agreement when he said it. I wish I could afford to move (not out of state, because my family is here, but somewhere quieter and away from certain neighbors).

Samuel Beckett was the only Irish writer who sprang to mind for me, and I knew from the description that it definitely wasn't him they were talking about. And I also knew there were a lot of other Irish writers, and that I knew their names, but I got so stuck on Beckett, I just couldn't move on.

 I knew Shaw last night but didn’t write down any other TS’s. I felt dumb when the FJ answer was revealed; all I could think of was Martin Luther King.

Now that was a game! It was actually in doubt up to the end, instead of being the Cris Show.

My quickie googling suggests it might not actually be accurate (I found Hawaii as the most expensive state to both buy a house and rent a 1BR apartment in 2022). But I don't have time to look further at the moment.

NJ was #4 on the rental list (after NY and CA).

Going back to Monday, I knew it wouldn't be Anne of Green Gables (author's pretty well-known), or Laura Ingalls Wilder (real person), and I didn't think of Sarah, Plain and Tall (I think since it was children's books, I was thinking of a child protagonist.)  Anybody remember Caddie Woodlawn?  I went with Caddie!

I like Cris and I’m not unhappy that he continues to win, but I’m glad to see him face some real competition the last couple days. It makes the game much more interesting.

My husband once interviewed for a job in NJ, and was advised to look for housing in Pennsylvania. Seems everyone who worked for that company lived out of state and did a 2 hour commute, because they could not afford to live in NJ. (He did not take the job.)

Are prices high everywhere in NJ? In NY, and I'm guessing CA, prices vary wildly depending on what part of the state you're looking at.

It was Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v the Board of Education.  I didn't get it right, but once the correct answer was revealed, I was all "D'uh, of course".  I think Matt probably just blanked like I did and guessed a random last name.

I had a pretty good game.  I ran Vehicle, How Tall etc, Give/Take, German Cities and Cast, plus got all but one clue in Politicians, Events, Nobel Literature and Silent Letter.  My correct TS answers were Harry Truman, white oak, The Bounty, Cairo and Yosemite.

Ah, The Paper Bag Princess, I remember that book. I don't remember the book Sarah Plain and Tall, but I do remember the TV movie ages ago when Glenn Close played Sarah.

I got Bobby right away, but was unsure. Something about his smile. Went with Teddy too.

I knew it wasn't Wilde (the only pictures I've seen him in, he looks a lot less stodgy than GBS, to say the least). I went with Joyce as I usually do.

I got FJ but spent the entire time thinking I was wrong because 1951 just seemed too early for me. As my husband said, I forgot how long it takes this stuff to go through the courts.

Partner South was taking a call, so the tv was muted.  I looked up in time to see the photo of RFK.  I said, (inside my head, because I’m considerate that way) “that’s either Bobby Kennedy or Jack Nicholson”.  I’ve never before seen a resemblance that I can recall.

Catching up from Tuesday, when I went to see "The Banshees of Inisherin" instead.  I did not get FJ -- I thought Brown was too obvious and didn't say it, despite not having anything else.

But I did get the TS of oak, Shaw, chocolate, and Yosemite.

I started out so badly but I at least tied yesterday's (not especially great) first round score in the end. Ran Time for Some Food, missed two in Elementary and Foreign Words, and three each in everything else.

Did better in DJ; ran Declaration of Independence and Colorful Song Title, missed one Fightin' Words and Quote "Me", two in Something to Read, and three in Giant Category.

For FJ I also guessed Mexico. Oh, well.

Got the missed clues of Greek to me (DD), Donnybrook, and John Hancock

Cris's favorite movie is Spaceballs…I like him even more, now.

I also said Mexico for FJ, even though I was pretty sure it was wrong.  Then I started wondering what they meant by "our" hemisphere.  Northern?  Western?  And I got seriously confused, so I gave up.

And the only TS I got was John Hancock, a guess based solely on the size of the text in the clue.
