The DJ rhyming categories are challenging because they generally don't have the couple of single-syllable word pairs that will appear in a first round rhyming category. And this one had two clues with three-syllable pairs, so after whiffing the impolite Jacobite clue entirely (had no idea what a follower of King James was called and impolite wasn't among the synonyms for rude I thought of) I was happy to come up with expedite dynamite in plenty of time. 3 Link to comment

DJ - Ran nothing, missed one in DC Area Attractions and Sculpture and two in everything else. FJ - After a few seconds of thinking I got it easily. TS - Yorick (DD), The Woman Warrior (read it in college and still have it), Lateran Councils, Fish Called Wanda Sorry but I was rooting against Rowan. The over-enthusiasm is just a tad much for me. (It takes a lot for me to specifically root against a player, but I will be rooting for Jack or Sadie the next two nights.) 5 1 2 Link to comment

853fisher October 27, 2022 Share October 27, 2022 (edited) I'm not surprised that folks found Rowan a little much, and I can't blame anyone who felt that way, but I enjoyed seeing them today. The over-the-top-ness of it all reminded me of friends who have been a bit heightened in all things while expressing a new identity to the world. Usually they mellow out after a little while, but I'm sure a TV camera would have the opposite effect. I'd be lying if I said I didn't find their exuberance a bit bracing myself, but I guess I "got" why they might be acting that way, so I didn't mind so much. Perhaps I shouldn't presume to know what a stranger on TV could be thinking, but I was powerfully reminded of being out for lunch with someone who was addressed their new way by the server, and was a mile a minute the rest of the afternoon because it filled them with such esprit. So, yes, I'll count myself in their corner! Bastet October 27, 2022 Share October 27, 2022 Great performance by Rowan; they were able to ring in on over half the questions, and got 30 of them correct. I'm rooting for Sadie, but if Rowan wins I won't be mad. I'm bummed A Fish Called Wanda was a TS; I love that movie! That Pentagon clue had no business being worth $800. I only ran snap and brain in the first round, but I got all but one each in Peaks & Valleys and birds, and those two were both TS, so at least I was in good company. I missed two in lit and three in music; that should have only been two as well, but I couldn't get Three 6 Mafia from my brain to my mouth in time. In DJ, I ran law slaw, middle O, and sculpture and got all but one (the Taft TS) in D.C. I missed two in seconds and three in movies, so that's good for a DJ round. For FJ, I guessed the Trevi Fountain pretty quickly, but then looked at the $3500 daily average and thought there couldn't possibly be that much and started trying to think of something else. I couldn't, so stuck with it, but I'm flabbergasted by the amount. 6 1 Link to comment

Someone cleverer than me on Reddit pointed out that there are €1 and €2 coins, which add up faster than American coins in common use. Even still, you're right - to make up $3500/€3500 (not quite 1:1 exchange rate, but close enough for this purpose), they need to collect about €2.50 for every minute of the day. secnarf October 27, 2022 Share October 27, 2022 Instaget FJ. Lucky enough to have visited the Trevi Fountain. I like that J-Archive modified Rowan's earlier appearance from season 37 to remove their dead name entirely - especially given that Rowan has stated in interviews that they didn't love appearing on Jeopardy under a name they knew they wouldn't be using for much longer, especially as that name would now be forever tied to them through Jeopardy. 1 1 9 Link to comment
30 Helens October 27, 2022 Share October 27, 2022 Add me to the list of disappointed by the Fish Called Wanda TS. I was really liking all three of them before that! Kidding, I still liked them all. (But sad that movie seems to have faded from popular knowledge.) Once again, I remembered no one from their prior appearance, but for whatever reason I was rooting for Do. I felt bad for Nikkee near the end, because she looked so defeated. All I could think was, “she’s gonna need some more therapy.” I enjoyed Rowan’s enthusiasm, and found it perfectly understandable. Not only were they getting a previously unheard-of second bite at the J! apple, they were getting an amazing do-over. Just guessing here, but I imagine the chance to fulfill this dream as Rowan, not <name redacted>, was a win in and of itself, and everything else was just gravy. Hence the big DD bet, because why not? I’ve never been in Rowan’s shoes, but I’m not sure I could have reined myself in, either. (Or would have wanted to.) I thought of Trevi Fountain right away, but almost second guessed myself because of the dollar amount. My husband didn’t think that was so much because thousands of people go by there every day. (I just looked it up; it’s 1200 per hour!) Now I’m just wondering who gets to roll up all those coins in all those little wrappers…😉 1 7 Link to comment

They seemed to tone it down in DJ. I was a little taken aback by two out of the three interviews: Rowan's revelations about coming out as nonbinary and Nikkee's discussion of her therapy. Nothing shameful about either of these, but unusually frank for J! interviews. I was more surprised by the missed Yorick DD. I thought everyone (well, anyone likely to be on J!) knew "Alas poor Yorick." For FJ I said fountains without specifying Trevi, so I guess that counted as wrong. It was a running joke between my mother and me for years that some people can't see a fountain without wanting to toss a coin in, and there is more than one fountain in Rome. The Metropolitan Museum in NY had to put up a sign by a Tiffany fountain on display not to toss coins in! 3 Link to comment

While it certainly depends on one's individual base of knowledge, it seems to me that several of the top row clues have been just as difficult as some of the bottom row clues. There doesn't necessarily seem to be an increase in the level of difficulty as contestants progress down the list of clues in any given category. Perhaps related, fewer and fewer contestants seem to start at the top and work down the categories. There's a new level of board jumping going on, even after DDs are uncovered. I guess it makes sense for those actually playing the game to try to grab the higher dollar amount clues first to build a lead and hopefully make more money, but it makes it less enjoyable for viewers IMO. Also, it makes running a category a lot less impressive when a contestant comes back to the category 2 or 3 separate times during the round in order to do it. Ken's been very good about acknowledging a category run, but when it's broken up, I honestly don't know how he's keeping track of how many correct responses one particular contestant got in one particular category. I guess someone's in his ear saying that if Player X gets the final clue in category D, they'll have run the category. To me, it makes it a less exciting accomplishment than to rattle off five consecutive correct responses in a row. JMO, of course. 3 1 3 Link to comment

I wonder if Harriet Tubman would be disgusted with being remembered as a Jeopardy! clue even if it was linked to her legacy with the Underground Railroad. After yesterday's buzz-saw win, I am disheartened to realize that Second Chancers cannot ever be double-digit-day champs, as Rowan would have almost certainly been if Rowan not been up against Matt Amodio during their First Chance. Had they not gone up against Matt Amodio, nearly 20 games into his dominating run, the first time around, they almost certainly would have wound up on a winning streak of their own. I "played" via the archive, but I may have to take a break from football at 7:00 just to watch them do their thing. (I still have a soft spot for Sadie, but answering Sandra Day O'Connor instead of RBG is testing me.) I got the worry beads TS because about 25 years ago my boss brought us each back a string of those from her trip to Greece, and we were all thoroughly confused, thinking they were rosaries (none of us were Catholic and most of us were atheist or agnostic), until she explained.
