One element I thought was very well-done last night was how they showed that, even though she was the cause of the drama, Linda was still essentially on the outside and dimissed as soon as she was no longer useful.

Her desperate quest to be seen as SOMEONE triggered all of this. Yet, as soon as they had Monica in the room, it was, okay, thanks, there's the door. You are no longer a factor here. Buh-Bye.

Same with the Jones lawyers who came to her house late that evening -- she was all about, "oh look at all these things that show you how important I am" and they were just all about -- what gifts did Clinton give to Monica, what was the book title.

And what I thought was the most well-done aspect of it all was Linda's hubris in a single comment (which we don't know for sure she said but does sum up this character so well): "its only a matter of time before the President knows what I've done," as though there's some twisted sense of pride in that -- that its about her and that the president will finally know that LINDA TRIPP is SOMEBODY.

I found her "I am you" press conference online. Man, she was a piece of work. "Imagine how you'd feel if . . . " yeah, Linda, really? Talk about victim mentality! She made it seem like it was all about her. . . "imagine how you'd feel if THIS happened to YOU." "What I did was never politically motivated."  She makes it sound like she was just minding her own business and all of these things just fell in front of her.

The reporter at the very end is a hero. He knew she was full of shit.

So much yes to the bolded. She didn't even get her 15 minutes of fame and self-importance. She was the Judas to Monica's Christ. The epitome of incidental.

This episode was insanely good...and I felt or Monica in the room with not only all those guys but tall guys too...

I still think she is not a complete victim here but as someone who had a huge crush on a married college prof at the time( nothing came of it), I completely understand being completely stupid in that way. I worked through my issues in time and I am sure Monica worked through hers....

I still have this nagging memory that during their affair, Monica took out a personals ad around Valentine's Day to wish him a Happy Valentine's Day...I recall the "Handsome" part of it...Does anyone else recall that?

You are spot on. Linda will even take the bad parts of the scandal if that means she’ll be seen. The president will send his Democratic hitmen after ME for what I, ME, LINDA TRIPP did. That’s a perp walk Linda would gladly take.

In the first episode Kathleen Wiley said the president didn’t even know who Linda was.  I think that was the moment Linda truly turned on Kathleen.  She was so desperate to be a somebody, but the most important person at the White House had no idea who she was and couldn’t care less.

She clearly did this so she could finally be "somebody" which turned out to be the laughing stock of an entire nation.

I need a William Ginsburg in my life.

6 hours ago, NoReally said:

True (especially the rich white girl part). But Ginsburg pointed out to Monica's father that no one ever went to jail about lying in a deposition about a personal affair.

Either way, he seemed certain that he could handle the situation -- which he did.

4 hours ago, cardigirl said:

I'll be interested to see how he's portrayed going forward. Monica didn't care for him and he doesn't stay on her team for very long.

From when Ginsburg is replaced on Monica's team of lawyers:

Quote

Ginsburg, a friend of Lewinsky's father hired the January night Starr's prosecutors confronted her in an Arlington hotel, brought no such background to the case. While widely praised as a civil attorney, Ginsburg had a sharp learning curve when it came to criminal law, as he later acknowledged.

He thought he had a binding immunity agreement with Starr that a court later deemed worthless. He suggested on national television that his client was immature and a fantasizer, seeming to hint one moment that she did have sex with Clinton and then denying it the next. He tipped off the news media as he escorted Lewinsky around town many evenings, but kept her in seclusion the rest of the time.

In recent weeks, he set up a photo shoot for Lewinsky so she could pose for Vanity Fair, saying she needed a pick-me-up because her "libido" was "imprisoned," a move that troubled many close to her.

And in what some people familiar with the situation described as the final straw, he published an open letter last week without first notifying her family in which he harshly attacked Starr, suggesting the prosecutor "may have succeeded in unmasking a sexual relationship between two consenting adults."

And this NYTimes obituary .

A strong episode that wasn't Linda-centric, which tells me this series would be much better if the story didn't revolve around her so much.

I guess what I don't understand (or maybe missed) is why Linda was sitting right there in the hotel room when they brought Monica in. What was the point of tipping Monica off that it was Linda who turned her in? Just to drive home the message that they had the goods on her?

I think they were still in the mall's food court, but that confused me too. I’d assumed they wanted more on tape and planned to kind of lurk around the background, not march right up to her at the same time Linda did.

I couldn't help but wonder though out this episode if Monica's life would actually have been a hell of a lot better in the long run if she had just cooperated. I suspect the whole media affair would have been significantly less prolonged if she had. That while she would still have been at the centre of a massive media storm, I think it would have been shorter and her part as the major player at front and centre of everything would have been. I think that she would have been less the butt of a years long series of smutty jokes. The whole thing would have been so much less salacious. Even if Clinton had been brought down and she had been deemed as the one who ultimately caused his downfall, I just really, really don't think it would have been worse than the utter, salacious infamy she did suffer through.

What I found really interesting was that she was screaming at Linda "what did you do?" when she had done it to herself. And then she immediately thinks of suicide, as a way of getting out of it.  Sheesh. Of course, she was scared at that point, because she thought she would end Clinton's presidency, but he did that to himself, by being addicted to risky behavior.

Monica had the affair, but she never would have been investigated if Linda hadn't betrayed her. Linda told anyone who would listen about Clinton having an affair and did everything she could to get herself subpoenaed.

This was the best episode of the season so far! I was 8 years old when all of this occurred so I didn’t know the full details. Back in elementary school, my teacher helped me write a letter to Bill Clinton and he actually wrote me back! This happened before the scandal hit. Who knows if he actually wrote it, but nonetheless, I thought it was so cool to receive a letter from the White House.

As I watch the series, I can’t help but feel bad for Monica Lewinsky. Yes, she made a huge mistake getting involved with a married man who just happened to be the president, but it’s terrible that she was basically used to take down Bill Clinton. She was exposed by someone who she thought was her friend and had to deal with all of the negative media attention. I don’t think Bill Clinton was judged so harshly, even to this day.

Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp is amazing. She makes me dislike Linda, but also, feel sorry for her. The part where she has shopping bags in her hand after turning Monica in, seems believable. I don’t think she felt remorse for what she did to Monica.

It’s horrible! People need to know that it’s their right, not an admission of some kind of guilt. Too many people, through no fault of their own,  don’t realize this.

There aren't any words that I can think of to describe how good I think Sarah Paulson's portrayal of Linda is. With loathsome characters, I always say that an actor is doing their job right if they can make me hate the character. Sarah Paulson's acting makes me really believe that Linda Tripp deserved an ass whipping.

Very impressed with Monica for not giving in to the intimidation tactics and insisting on waiting for her mom. It was a stark contrast to the way Paula crumbled during the deposition in the last episode. Someone upthread has mentioned privilege, and I definitely think that was a factor here. Both of Monica's parents seem very savvy and probably taught her from a young age how valuable a good lawyer can be. Paula obviously had a much more naive and sheltered upbringing, so she had a much harder time keeping her composure in that kind of situation.

To me, this was a total -- "look what it has cost me to do the RIGHT THING" moment, as though she were the ethically upstanding whistleblower. If she were actually that person, she would've told Monica LONG ago to end the affair.  She would have been a real friend and empowered her to walk away, to tell her the hard truths ("He's not going to leave his wife...what is the end game here?")

Linda Tripp would never admit that her real motive IMO was revenge, She was pissed that she was dismissed form her WH job and she thought it would've been different if she had been attractive, so she decided to punish Bill Clinton.

And one last thought... I don't think she was ugly - to my mind she was average looking.  Her ugliness came across in her demeanor and facial expressions, and no amount of surgery is going to change that. I don't see her as any more attractive in the post-surgery and weight loss era.  MEAN = UGLY

Linda Tripp is a villain in this for sure, so much so that it sometimes overshadows Clinton who was actually the worst one of the bunch.  He manipulated women who he identified as being easy marks without any regard for them as people with real lives and feelings of their own.  That clearly a sign of true predator.  Monica was young, immature, and needy at the time but he took full advantage of that.  It is sad and maddening that her life after this has been forever shadowed by what happened regardless of how she since then developed as an adult. This was not her fault!

I agree. Her personality made her much uglier than her looks and she can not change that with plastic surgery.

I also noticed in one of the interviews posted that she has rather good-looking children, particularly her son.

It makes me wonder if her ex-husband was handsome.

I think one interesting thing about this season in contrast to the other two seasons is that, in my opinion, they are all villains.  With Season 1, you had the clear villain of the murderer and then to a lesser degree, those who helped him and the media. Second season I didn't watch all of, but again - there was a murderer.  This time, Linda is a villain for using Monica, Clinton lied under oath and used a young woman, and Monica chose to have an ongoing affair with a married man and also lied under oath.

I didn't recognize Mira Sorvino at first (my TV screen isn't huge), but her eyes were familiar, so I looked her up in IMDB.  I'm not used to her in an older role--it's such a shame that her promising career was somewhat derailed by Harvey Weinstein, so it's good to see her again.

I really like Mira Sorvino but found it strange to cast her as Beanie's mother.

Some of you have mentioned that Beanie looks too dissimilar to Monica and how it sometimes takes you out. Last night was the first time that I saw the resemblance to her brother, Jonah Hill. It was probably due to her hair being pulled back.

I applaud Monica for being able to keep her wits about her enough to call her mom.

The "I'll never get married line" probably was more true the trouble that the real Monica had when dating after the scandal than anything that she probably said at the moment. Though, of course, there is nothing wrong with being single.

I would rather be single than married to William Jefferson Clinton.

I have thought that the producers have taken it VERY easy on Clinton. He is portrayed as actually caring about Monica.  Of course, not enough to spare her the dangers of having a relationship with him, but he isn't treating her like a piece of ass either,

I sincerely believe that he NEVER thought his philandering would bite him in the ass. Because 1. it hadn't before and 2. surely he is the most powerful man in the world and could dispatch of any unwanted attention and 3. he had always used his charisma and charm to talk anyone into anything.  And I don't think Monica ever thought it would come out because he was the  POTUS and surrounded by powerful people who would protect them both.  Rumors? Sure but  Eh, whatever, who cares.  But actual disasterous  consequences? I don't think either of them really thought that would come to pass. Sadly, Clinton kinda did weasel his way out, but Monica wasn't so lucky.

I had read Toobin's book, which is source material for the series, so I knew what was gonna happen, but heck if that wasn't horrific. One thing, when she called her mom, mom seemed quite aware that she was having an affair with Clinton. Wtf? I would have been up my kids behind with disapproval daily and I sure wouldn't be paying for a condo at the Watergate. I realize that 22 or 24 is am adult but clearly she was still depending on her parents. That gives them some power.

I think part of this is due to the affair being from Monica’s point of view. She knew he was using her but a tiny part of her, at least at the time, believed in the love story fantasy.

I've always felt bad how Monica was treated and how Clinton just got off scot free. Now knowing that Monica had a previous relationship that was similar and completely jacked up it is no wonder she got into this with Clinton.

Yes she was an adult but was naive and taken advantage of and just made the scapegoat on this.

This episode was great and since her parents were both aware of what happened that day it was a big help to her and standing up to the men in the room.

I still feel bad for her because she made a dumb mistake as a young adult and it ruined the rest of her adult years until recently.  We've all made mistakes just not drug out in front of the entire US.

Yeah, until a few decades ago (and still, in some parts of the world), the woman probably would have also been pregnant and allllll of the societal complications which would have come with that.

I KNOW, RIGHT???!!!  I LOVE MIRA!!!  She's magnificent.  I had wondered why we haven't seen much of her in the past 15-20 years, but we know why.  Regardless, I'm glad that she has a happy private life with her husband and kids.  My friends and I still quote Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, and actually, whenever I hear Elizabeth Holmes' fake low voice, makes me think of the voice Mira put on for the role of Romy... in contrast to the very high-pitched voice she put on for Mighty Aphrodite!!

I remember in her TED talk, Monica said her parents made her shower with the door open in the aftermath because they were afraid she would hurt herself. I thought of that when she was sobbing in the bathroom.

In present day, Lewinsky has stated Clinton should want to apologize to her. I get that the POTUS influenced her to lie, but maybe this many years later Monica may want to - if not apologize to Paula Jones - consider how her actions impacted the bigger picture.

Very good to see Mira Sorvino again; hope we see more of her in other productions. Oddly, her Lewinsky character resembles her Romy and Michelle character when dressed as a businesswoman. That's a compliment.

The Paula Jones actress nailed the southern accent. I can count on one hand the number of non-southern actors who achieved this as well.

I remember Ginsburg was a bit too eager to face the cameras, remarking at one point, in order to substantiate Monica's innocence - "I kissed that girl's inner thighs when she was six days old -- I said, Look at those little polkas,' " says lawyer William Ginsburg of his client, Monica Lewinsky, in the March 2 issue of Time magazine.." Cringeworthy.

Been to Pentagon City Mall many times. The scenes at the Ritz and in the mall were superbly produced and acted.

Monica's rights were trampled, but there were definite whiffs of her becoming fixated and entitled in her romantic entanglements. Age is not an excuse. She did indeed bear the awful, disproportionate brunt of this scandal. I guess her parents have been supporting her in addition to whatever income she can scrounge? I remember a handbag line at one point.

At the time, so many people could not get over Tripp's gutter tactics, and the betrayal of a good friendship. It was perceived as being grounded in jealousy and career bitterness. Lots of that goes on in DC.

Ken Starr was indeed a zealous madman. His fervor was driven by his sanctimonious, extreme religious beliefs. (Research the Church of Christ. It's the Duck Dynasty gang's religion as well. I married one of its survivors/escapees). I believe Starr's independent investigation rang up a whopping tab of $70M. While valuable in theory, ICs are an invitation to excess and abuse.

Researched and corrected my memory of Ginsburg's quote.

According to this her net worth is $1.5 million, after accounting for all the legal bills she had. I know those estimates aren't always accurate, but it sounds like she shouldn't need much from her parents.

It must suck to have to earn your income from things like books and interviews where you talk about the worst time in your life rather than a regular job, but it is a money maker.

If only Monica has read David Simon's great book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. The show that was based on it was still on at the time of this episode, and in an early chapter of the book it talks about how you should always ask for a lawyer because cops can lie to you, and if they ever say calling a lawyer will make things worse or that they are on your side you should never believe them.

Among other things, it caused me to consider whether Colin Hanks has turned into a better actor than his father.

It's weird to hear him say that he has been a prosecutor for 20 years because he still looks like he is under 30.

I sincerely believe that he NEVER thought his philandering would bite him in the ass. Because 1. it hadn't before and 2. surely he is the most powerful man in the world and could dispatch of any unwanted attention and

It's been interesting to learn more about Paula Jones watching this series and reading about her real case. Because her story seems very credible, which means if it did happen like she says, it likely wasn't the first time Clinton pulled that move while governor.

I still feel bad for her because she made a dumb mistake as a young adult and it ruined the rest of her adult years until recently.  We've all made mistakes just not drug out in front of the entire US.

I sort of go back and forth with how I feel about her situation. Because I definitely agree that the amount of shit she had to deal with from the media and the world in general was way over the top when compared to what she did and I feel bad about that. At the same time I am not sure I can just write off what she did as dumb mistakes someone makes when they are young. Because most people's dumb mistakes don't involve multiple felonies.

Watching the show now that it’s on Hulu and I know the producers want me to feel sorry for Monica by now, but no. She knowingly decided to commit perjury. Yes, Linda Tripp was a horrible “friend,” but Monica would have been fine if she hadn’t decided to sign a false affidavit.
