The ending with all the skaters was kind of hilarious. Poor Zag was off the beat at least 50% of the time.

The endings are the best part! XD I remember in one of the galas, one of the (comparatively) older men was pretty much a dad-dancer. XD

Ugh all i wanted to see at the Gala was Virtue and Moir and see if they would just make out on the ice. I would Perfectly ok with that. The whole world wants them banging each other.  In any event, I missed it.

That ending was was fun but disjointed. Oh well. They’re just having fun!

I don't follow hockey, so was there some hockey development that necessitated showing a game from 5-7 am where no game had previously been scheduled?

It makes no sense - the gold medal game starts in 10-15 minutes and will be long over by 4 am EST.

Hey, Alina! You are cordially invited to move to the US where your achievements on ice will be warmly appreciated. That video made me sad.

Alina's family is Tatar. I wonder if that's one reason for the cold response to her. In Russia being the right ethnicity matters a lot. I found this out the hard way by lurking on Russian ballet forums, where the ethnicity of dancers was discussed endlessly.

I honestly hope Tessa and Scott are, and remain, best friends and skating partners.  I don't want to give their creepy stalkers any satisfaction.  Now, if they do start dating, or reveal that they've been together this whole time, I'll be happy for them.  But I hope they're just playing for the crowd and judges and nothing else.

Just saw Alina in her tiger catsuit and candle! That was such a bizarre routine, especially with the candle on the tummy but I had a big smile on my face after watching it. She has so much personality (they both seem to). Gives me faith that the Russian Skating Machine can't beat their spirit out of them!

I've seen that being speculated somewhere. I hope that's not it. I will say that people on GS are supportive of her, though (well, there is the nonsensical artistic vs technical argument against her, but apart from that).

(Though Med is half-Armenian, so I think it's more of a "paid her dues" deal)

Yeah they both have spunk and personality. Hope they're pigging out on some ice cream right now.

All the more reason she should "c'mon over!" Such a pretty girl & great skater to be treated so coldly by Coach Cruella deVille.

Didn't watch the Gala live but went back and watched the performances. Aliona/Bruno and Nathan didn't perform due to illness. The Games are ending just in time if the flu is on the prowl.

Anyway the Shibs were fun to watch.

Tessa and Scott certainly know how to play the roles of a couple in love. They've found their niche and ran with it. Despite their undeniable chemistry, I still think their love for one another is completely platonic.

I could appreciate Alina trying something different for her Exhibition skate, but her program was awful as was her costume. She's really a beautiful girl though. If her figure skating career stalls out she could perhaps launch a successful modeling career.

Yeveginia was really feeling her music. I appreciated the uniqueness of her skating to a pop song native to her country, A lot of times if skaters do pop/rock music it'll be a song by a UK or US artist. Her program (the choreography) was just okay, but again I liked how she connected with the music.

Javi's program was ridiculously funny. LOL. Very entertaining.

Hanyu's program was beautiful. He really is mesmerizing to watch, but...I wish he'd do an exhibition program that showcased more his personality. He is so different from the serious, elegant and ethereal skater he is in competition when off the ice. His personality seems to be very fun - jokey, klutzy and lovable, I wish he'd explore those parts of his personality in an exhibition.

I could understand why the finale was a bit of a disaster. That was a lot of skaters to try and coordinate into some type of cohesive skating production in just a few days, but the skaters had fun and it was fun watching them which is all that matters.

My fan girl crush on Javi grew exponentially by 10 with that fantastic exhibition skate. He is too adorable. Misha was so much fun as well. The Shibs and their twizzles still dazzle me- I guess that I have to find all the other hip hop short programs from last year’s nationals now on YouTube.

I wish Johnny and Tara had done the commentary for the exhibition. Tara talks WAY too much, especially about things that she could have said before the skater starts (as opposed to commentary about the actual skate, which I think Johnny does better) but at least you can hear SOME of the music. I want to hear how the skaters interpret the music, not commentators rambling along during the whole skate.

Last Zag/Med/Eteri video for this quad:

This is so dramatic I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. I want to hug Alina and give her cookies. It doesn’t help that my daughter is also named Alina.

Watched some of the gala on the app, then went to see Black Panther. Love the Shibs. Barbie Girl was cute. Javi was hilarious. I’ll have to catch up on the rest.

Oh, it's a real documentary. The channel Koola King is pretty much just a shit-posting channel, but they did point out Med's tech flaws and Eteri's behaviour (as shown to a viewer on TV), and they used the documentary from YouTube. And the name "Ice Cinderella" is far too fitting for Alina given what we were shown on TV with Eteri and Med (though Med is a friend of Zag as far as I can tell). She did have her coronation over someone her coach favoured.

As for Eteri... I do think we don't know the whole story, but she has definitely invited criticism due at least to how she almost never sits with the student who falls during her program. And then there's that story about her dragging Med on the ice because she fell, and then there's that story about Lip, etc.

Just caught up on the NBC coverage of the gala.

Papadakis/Cizeron were way more engaging to me here than in Moonlight Sonata. They'd said in interviews that they wanted to play it safe and classical for the Olympic year, but they feel much more real in this wheelhouse. And no Andrea Joyce, Virtue/Moir did not 'take their gold away'. They had to beat their overall PB by over 6 points to do it. Shh.

Ever since they debuted that exhibition it was clear V/M choreographed it in 10 minutes because it's so empty, but they are forgiven because the lifts are amazing, that song makes me cry, and the connection is pretty tangible. I had to explain to a room of 4 year fans that, no, they've been like this with each other since 2008. I'm going to miss them. Despite thinking they've overrated I like P/C a lot, but I like competition better, and they don't have any now. It'll be a whole quad unchallenged.

Adore that Shibs program. Twizzles!

Bless Evgenia for skating exactly what I would have done as an angsty teenager. She'll be ok.

I just noticed it's been shortened down to an hour.  It's now on the schedule for 4-5 am (Eastern).  That's a bummer.

Actually,  NBCSN showed nothing on the gala at all. I don't know why they chose to not show it.

I cannot believe that there are some journalists who are suggesting that US Figure Skating needs to be more like US Gymnastics in the training of young athletes.  The very idea is so - I don’t even know the right words.  Mind-numbingly ignorant?  Colossally stupid? Morally repulsive?

I noticed him jumping around with Alex Shib at the end of the finale, and I thought, THAT's the Hanyu that people talk about!

Oh, that sucks. Just waking up to this news. Guess whatever I recorded overnight isn't anything. Glad I put the effort into trying to catch the segments on NBC last night - I wasn't going to because the overnight program seemed more cohesive and longer. And now it didn't exist!

It's a bummer.  They showed an entire hockey game that, of course, went into overtime, and then switched to soccer.  Soccer.

I can't believe the NBC broadcast didn't even show all the medalists.  No pairs at all (I know Aljona was sick and didn't skate) and no Shoma and Javi.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised :(

That sucks.  As many of you probably already know, the whole thing is available On Demand, at least, it is on Cox.  They've also got all of the long programs available.  Looks like they'll be there until March 31.

Lloyd Eisler and Isabelle Brasseur used to do such fun Exhibition skates. That’s the fun I miss!

Loved them!  Such energy!  Once again bragging on my one and only Olympics, but I attended the exhibition in Lillehammer where they skated to 'Devil with a Blue Dress' and threw in plenty of illegal but fun stuff like Detroiters and headbangers.  Also loved their exhibition skate in drag.

That exhibition included Gordeeva and Grinkov, Torvill and Dean and a host of other legendary performers.  T&D did Bolero as an encore.

Boo! I just woke up to find I had 3 hours of hockey coverage on my DVR!

If you have the NBC Sports app they have the entire gala there. The Australian lady calls it with that guy - don’t know who he is, which is great.

Yep! ? At the very end of the gala they did a selfie of all the skaters and one of the male pair skaters lifted him into a pair lift for the pic, which he seemed to have a blast doing.  ?  I too found it funny how the little girls who were volunteers throughout the competition were fangirling over him. When Scott grabbed him to take a picture with he, Tessa and Alina a group of them kind of followed Hanyu and were obviously star struck by him based on their reactions.

Speaking of Alina, I feel bad for her. At times she seemed kind of left out when all the skaters were interacting after the gala. I think her age, being just 15, may be in part the culprit. I think she may have been the youngest skater that took part in the gala.

Going along with her age, she hasn't been on the senior level very long. The other skaters probably don't know her very well, which adds to the disconnect.

Plus maybe a language barrier. Med seems to have at least rudimentary English but I don't think I've seen anything with Zag that wasn't 100% translated.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this thread. In fact, it made the Olympics for me! I've lurked here and on the TWOP (R.I.P.) boards for a very long time, but this is the first time I've participated. Thanks for the great, insightful, and often very funny commentary and for putting up with a posting neophyte.

I lurked for too many years on TWoP before getting my feet wet (and my wrists slapped!).  I can assure you that PTV is a most welcoming place; stick around with us neophytes, and post every once in a while!  ;-)

I was a little surprised by who made the cut, too....I know a lot of you like Dabin Choi, but I think I would have subbed her for Shoma or Javi. And did none of the pairs medalists participate? The NK pair was an interesting story, yes, but I would have rather seen the Canadians or the silver medalists (if they were there - I know D/R were).

The Olympic channel is now showing hour segments of back to Peyong Chang. I got to see the women’s final finally!  And they have segments of all disciplines and other sports. I might finally see some of the good stuff. So the gala might be there too at some point.

I also discovered that nothing I DVR'd had the Gala so I'm now watching on the NBC Olympics app on Roku - they're showing the whole thing, start to finish (including Zamboni action!) Javier's performance was exactly what a gala performance should be - nothing but fun. The whole point of exhibition skating is that you don't have to worry about the rules or being technically perfect - just do something that the audience can really enjoy.
