Jeopardy! Season 34 (2017-2018)

Austin can sure ham it up, which I find annoying, but no doubting he is a great player.

$125K in 4 games.  Also a gutsy player with big DJ wagers.  That is going to come back to defeat him one of these times.  But so far he is using it to his advantages

I though for sure he took too long on "chimney sweep".  Seemed like he thought forever

I might have made motion with my hand that would be considered rude. Aaand said a foul word or two.

Austin must have been kicking himself for calling Raul Castro "Ramone"!

Oh, is that what he said? I couldn't quite hear it. That's a pretty big miss.

With the Renaissance painters, I misheard Alex and thought he said the painter's name rhymed with "it" and not "his" - so I was fruitlessly searching for an unusual Italian name. Sheesh.

Got chimney sweep right away, as did the mister. Well before Austin. Maybe he's never had a fireplace (though that seems unlikely, growing up in a nature reserve and all).

I came up with chimney sweep almost immediately but thought that it might be too cutesy and therefore wrong.

The only TS I got was Swiss (muslin).

I got the Swiss too - though I wasn't sure because I've only heard it referred to as "dotted Swiss" with no mention of muslin.

No.  They specifically wanted the numerical name.

No.  They specifically wanted the numerical name.

I missed that too, even though I take the Q every day, because nobody actually calls it the Second Avenue Subway, other than the MTA.

I'm impressed by Austin* but I hate a runaway so I'm glad the other guys picked up a little steam in the Double Jeopardy round. FJ was an instaget for me, maybe because they've been advertising that Victoria & Abdul movie to death.

*although Alex will always be GOAT in my book

Austin bugs the shit out of me. I thought maybe he has Aspergers, but no..just a douche. There was something  else but I could not put my finger on it, then my sister walked in and said "why is the Unibomber on Jeopardy?".  That's it !!!

Now, see, I was finding Austin really annoying but when he said he didn't like the Eagles I decided he might not be so bad.

Just the opposite for me....I'm still rooting for him...I mean, to each his/her own...but his sneering response lowered him a few pegs in my own estimation.

Amen to this. Every year I take advantage of the free credit report that these three are required to give you AND I created logins for my deceased parents and I check their credit reports, too. I hear horror stories about scumbags opening credit under dead people's names.

I stagger them. Every four months, I pull a credit report. In Georgia, there's a law that you're allowed TWO free reports a year, but if you try to get the second one online, their program tells you you've already gotten one this year, so you have to fill out a form & send it via snail mail. (HORRORS!)

The "hunDREEED" lady wasn't from Massachusetts. She was from Marietta, GA. (I used to live in Marietta and couldn't believe someone from there spoke like that.)

That bothered me for the same reason.  I don't care who you like; just play the damn game. This last episode I found Austin annoying, and previously he didn't bother me. He'll be in the TOC, but I'm ready for his run to be over.

I don't get it. We suddenly have someone on J! who KNOWS a whole bunch of shit and makes me hold my breath when he bets big amounts. I don't care if he dislikes the Eagles or the Beatles or Tiny Tim, he answered the "clue" correctly. And then he'll buzz in for geography, movies, books and so on. When I see people say they didn't watch the show (or won't watch the show) because so-and-so was (is) winning, I wonder why they watch at all. I haven't liked all Jeptestants, but -- despite Trebec who is often an itch I can't scratch -- I watch to play! I'm totally involved. I yell at the TV. I hate it when the Board isn't cleared. I don't particularly care for  boring, cookie-cutter Jeptestants (I take it some of you prefer them) and I think it's unfair to call Austin a douchebag. He's a bartender. He's almost always "on." Been there, done that, writing my books during the day and playing cocktail waitress or server at night. It's good for tips. Sorry to rant, y'all, but...well, I just don't get it.

Some contestants make the game unpleasant for me to watch -- it isn't fun for me to see the camera-mugging, or time-wasting gestures and chatter, or the starting at somewhere other than the top of the category.  I don't like the strategy of taking forever to pick the next clue or decide how much to wager on a DD or even taking the longest possible time to answer the DD, resulting in an uncleared board.  Austin is guilty of all those things.  It is possible for the game to be fun without all that.  I would have watched Ken or Julia forever.

I personally love seeing the smart folks who blow it out of the water, Austin definitely fits that bill. My least favorite contestant is the "not too bright, but tries really hard to be interesting," which hey, at least they get people talking. Austin is an unholy combo of "trying too hard" and "brilliant as shit," which I enjoy, but then again I was a big Matt Jackson fan. I love the polarizing contestants, but people hating those same contestants makes this board a lot more fun ;)

Does anyone know why Austin pointed his finger toward the audience and screamed a loud "NO"?

How I saw it: Austin answered a spelling bee clue, Alex said "less than a minute to go," and Austin said "no" before choosing the next clue because the spelling category took up too much time. I believe he was pointing at the board, not the audience.

Hang on...you're saying we don't all watch for exactly the same reasons and with exactly the same point of view? I am shocked! Shocked, I say.

Exactly. It's a message board, and we are all entitled to like or not like whomever we choose. I don't need to explain my opinion, although I often do. What I never say is that I don't understand why someone likes or dislikes something I like or dislike.

I've never not watched due to a contestant, but I came close a few times. If I did choose to stop watching does that make me not a true fan??

I think Austin is a tool, and I don't enjoy watching him. You can think he's freaking delightful. My viewpoint is no less valid than yours.

I like Austin.  I like that he seems happy to be on Jeopardy.  And, for the most part he starts at the top unless they're running out of time.  I love his DD wagers.  I find him quirky, not annoying.  And no contestant has ever stopped me from watching Jeopardy.  Well, there was this one guy, who everyone loved, and who looked so bored all the time I couldn't stand it.

I'm in the minority in that I wasn't annoyed at all by dancing Jennifer. I found her kind of amusing. Colby irritated the hell out of me and got me to consider stop watching until he was gone, but I managed to make it through his tenure. I did not make it through Arthur Chu, the only time I've ever temporarily given up J! to avoid seeing the champ. Since then I've read several of Arthur's blog posts and really enjoyed them; he's a good writer, but was insufferable as a J! contestant. Austin is annoying, but not quite give-up-the-show annoying. Not yet, anyway.

"Smug Chewbacca" wins the Internet today! Funny and accurate!

Exactly what I do - because mostly we watch the show to see if we can answer the questions. (it's all about us, don't ya know) (that is "we" and "us" as in me and the mister)

I could not stand Alex Jacob until his last show when for some reason I loved him and then was sad he lost.  And then on his TOC I was even *more* infatuated except for his precious FJ answers.  I never did come around on that.

So I do occasionally change my mind, but as long as Austin makes obnoxious hand gestures during intros and is noisy for no reason, I probably will root for his opponents until he's gone.  Unless they're like Pasha.

In addition to psychiatry, I also got Swiss and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Why do I suspect the hatred of the Eagles is in part from 'The Big Lebowski" where the main character expresses his complete disgust for them? I know some people who hate them because the Dude in the movie did and/or they enjoy being edgy and against the mainstream

Got psychiatry, Swiss and Bradley.

For Renaissance artists, when in doubt guess a Ninja Turtle. It is hard when you mishear the clue.

As for chimney sweep, I guessed it based on the chimney flue although I never heard the term flueologist before.

I like him also. I appreciate seeing style and I respect him going making big DD wagers. That said, they gave him an infinity to answer the flueologist clue. There have been contestants that made me fall asleep and those ones with really loud or really soft voices, Those tend to bother me.

It's not because he's winning.....it's simply because he's on my TV screen.  When it becomes obvious I'm not going to enjoy the show (with the hopes of the irritant leaving) I'm gone.  Enough going on in real life and little enough time to fill with things I enjoy.  I did the same with The Walking Dead.  Preview of Negan torture porn and I'm 'nope.....not going there'.  DVR it, read the forums, mostly likely delete it without watching.  I honestly haven't missed Jeopardy (or The Walking Dead) and right now I'm not sure about tuning in again.  Not so much because of Austin but there have been too many of his ilk for me lately and as I get old I'm a lot less tolerant about wasting my time.

Tonight I finally got caught up for the week, and I couldn't wait to read what everyone thought of Austin.

Disclaimer -- I am about to come across as a huge snob. Consider yourself warned.

For me, what irks me about him is that he doesn't fit the mold of "the Jeopardy! contestant" -- for me. Having watched the show for decades (a big Congrats! to Johnny), I always felt that the show was somehow more sophisticated than other game shows. Even other quiz shows. There was just an air of seriousness, even though many of the contestants seemed to enjoy themselves. And then a couple of years ago, we started getting more and more "personalities" -- I read somewhere (here, probably) that one of the contestant search staff members used to work for another, more high-energy game show. Maybe that's the difference, or maybe it's that younger people seem have less respect for convention. (Or maybe it's that I'm now over 50 and get-off-my-lawn cranky.)

Anyway, I respect Austin's brain power, but he can't get off my TV fast enough. He reminds me of that "intern Ross" guy from one of the late-night talk shows a few years ago. And he doesn't like the Eagles -- I mean, c'mon, who doesn't like the Eagles?

This!

Yeah, a draw is better than a loss in soccer, and sometimes (like when Arsenal finally did not lose to Chelsea in a regular season match last week) it's a damned good thing.

I found his personality obnoxious, and life is too short to willingly spend time with obnoxious people.  I tend to intensely dislike contestants who seem to me as if they're playing a character, and Austin is the epitome of that.  I don't buy that it's because he's a bartender, because I've known bartenders who weren't always on.  I think it's because he's a douchebag.

I don't care where contestants start or end up on the board, all the questions are the same category, so what's the dif if they want to search for the DD. I do object to contestants who think they are "all that" and are complete douchebags. So, I dislike this Austin with the heat of a zillion suns. Meanwhile, I shouted out the answer to today's FJ before Trebek had even finished reading it. "Artist." "Iowa." I mean common, it's a no-brainer. So I did shout out "DUMBASS!" to contestants who didn't guess correctly. And sidenote: The TOC with Alex Jacobs and Matt was my favorite of all time. I could watch those two forever.

I believe I meant "come on" not "common." Oops!

This has nothing to do with the gameplay today, just about Austin's intro story, but I'll tag it. (EDITED TO REMOVE TAG LATER)

...I was okay with this dude until he said he fell asleep during a Disturbed concert because the music is so boring. FUCK THIS GUY. Seriously. Why'd he go to a concert for a band he hates? And how the hell does someone FALL ASLEEP during a heavy metal concert? I've been to a Disturbed concert (they are amazing), and I couldn't fall asleep there if you paid me a billion dollars. Sorry, Austin, you made it to my Shit List now.

Okay contestant on the end....what does "Iowa" & "milk cow" lead you to Whistler????  As to "Winslow".... isn't the artist's name "Winslow Homer"? Or is there a different "Artist Winslow"? Of course, FJ was an instaget (or should have been). "Iowa", "milk cow" leads you to "farmer" and you think "artist", "farmer" and immediately you picture "American Gothic" (which we have here in Chicago at the Art Institute). Love him or hate him, you've got to admit that the champ doesn't mind wagering big! $16K on a DD (when you have $18K), not to mention the FJ bet! What is the "one-day record"???
