You know, Syfy sucks. I've been waiting on watching The Expanse because I figured they'd do this. They burned me on Dark Matter and I no longer want to watch any of their shows. I do watch The Magicians and if they cancel that one I might just have to storm the gates. Maybe Netflix can pick up The Expanse, I read that they wanted to start concentrating on sci-fi in the future.

Respectfully, I'm not sure why you put the list of shows under spoiler tags. I think a regular quote would've been fine.

I'm glad Hollywood Game Night got renewed, but it seems to me like NBC keeps renewing it without airing it. I hardly ever see it on the NBC schedule anymore (or I keep missing it); also it seems like it had a seriously short run on GSN (Game Show Network)--a "now you see it, now you don't" type run--when it was on there awhile back.

It's a long list, that's why I put it under a spoiler tag. I do that for anything really long so it doesn't take up too much space.

Today has been a ROUGH day for the casts/crews/fans of a lot of TV shows. Damn. I haven't seen any of the Fox shows, outside of checking out a few of the reruns of B99 that they now show on TBS (and which I've liked thus far), but I feel for anyone whose shows on that network got axed today. Same for the cancelled shows on the other networks, too.

These cancellations seem to me unusually excessive this year, like a virtual bloodbath. Bet there's going to be a rash of new shows in the Rosanne vein. I wouldn't be surprised if All in the Family doesn't get resurrected too, except with Archie written as a hero instead of a scared old bigot.

Seems like maybe the Fox cancellations are less for reasons of ratings and more making a statement about a certain audience they want to attract similar to the audience of their news programs. I wondered if this was the case behind the cancellations but this pretty much confirms it.

As for the online streaming services I think it's probably just down to poor management. They put out too many shows to attract people and now they're realizing it's time to scale back and they're becoming more like the traditional TV networks. Netflix in particular seems to not be on top of the world like it was the past few years. They have more to worry about now in terms of future competition and they're probably feeling at least some effects from the tech backlash.

I think The Last Man Standing pickup is definitely them trying to piggyback on the Roesanne revival based on what most think pieces state the audience for that show is but they are ignoring 11 million other factors and I hope it fails miserably.

Etb OMG!!!!!  NBC picked up Brooklyn 99 for season 6!

Are there still ties to the Fox News crowd? I thought Disney bought all Fox entertainment stuff except for the news division. I could be wrong and it fell through or it was only the movie productions. I feel like a big deal was made about the X-Men being owned by Disney and could be in the Marvel Avengers movies now.

And here is 1 of the many news reports--this 1 from CNN--about Brooklyn 99's resurrection for a 6th season.

The article I read says the rash of FOX cancellations is at least partially sports related, due to their pick up of Thursday Night NFL games in addition to their baseball coverage.

I can believe that, at least some cancellations were as a result of Fox having to make room for the football games since you normally have to lose at least 3-4 hours of programming time to air NFL games & other sporting events. NBC had to do the same thing on Sunday nights when they got the rights to those games (which at least partly resulted in the cancellation--though it was at the end of a 7-year run by that time--of the acclaimed, politically-oriented, now considered classic TV drama The West Wing).

I really didn't watch Fox much except when American Idol was on there; I still don't watch much on Fox, unless it's, like, the Super Bowl or some other major national sports championship; or it's their turn to broadcast the Primetime Emmys or another major awards show which rotates its broadcasts among the major networks; or they're airing Miss USA &/or Miss Universe (the Daytime Emmys & Miss Teen USA [the 3rd of the 3 beauty pageants in the Miss Universe pageant "system" that used to air, for years, on CBS when I was growing up], by the way, apparently got such abysmal ratings on broadcast TV they each got relegated to online/streaming a few years ago, unlike their related shows, the Primetime Emmys & the Miss USA & Miss Universe pageants.

I recently watched this year's Daytime Emmys on YouTube; I'm pretty sure they were posted there intentionally, by either the TV Academy, someone else who oversees the Daytime Emmys in their current state of broadcasting ability, or the network which streamed them, & not illegally. They were like I remembered from when they were on the major networks, but the words being spoken by whomever was presenting (or whatever) never completely matched the lip movements of that person; it was like there was a brief delay between the words & the lips saying them. It was also cool watching Days of Our Lives' Bill & Susan Seaforth Hayes, a (very nice, by the way) couple I worked with on some of the March of Dimes telethons I did, back in the day, get a shared Lifetime Achievement Award for their lengthy careers. Bill is now almost 93 (in June), Susan is almost 75 (in July), their 44th wedding anniversary is (or was) sometime this year (married in 1974, no month given) & I'm happy to say both are still going very strong. Except for Bill's now-totally white hair, I don't think at least some people would know they're a ninetysomething & a seventysomething, by the way they act. They both still seem to be "all there", as it were.

Oh I didn't know they weren't connected anymore. I know at least in the past back when I had a TV, some of the conservative commentators appeared on the regular network FOX (ie. not the Fox News cable channel) so I assumed there was some connection.

Isn't the NFL and sports in general having a decline these days?

Indeed. Canceling a bunch of shows and yet the garbage heap that The Simpsons has become is STILL on the air?! At least B99 was saved by NBC.

I think the one that pisses me off is law and order svu. Ugh, I just can't anymore with that show.

And now Alex inc is out..

Yea as much as I used to love that show... Olivia gets on my nerves. And TWD needs to go too.

The X Files status got moved from Canceled to Unknown. It's like a bad penny.

From USA TodayFans Raise Hell Over Lucifer Cancellation; Rallying to Get It Saved by Another Network

Part of the situation here is that the producers included a big cliffhanger in the (so far, series) finale, thinking Fox would never cancel the show & leave the cliffhanger unresolved.

Apparently the showrunners never heard about, or don't remember, what happened to NBC's Las Vegas a few seasons ago; they did the same thing--put a big cliffhanger, involving an at least double wedding among the resort casino's staff members & a pregnancy with unexpected complications, in what they expected would be their 5th (I think) season finale--then NBC canceled the show & left fans & other viewers hanging, & hanging forever because the producers weren't able to get the show picked up by another network & NBC wouldn't even let them do a 1-off episode to resolve the cliffhanger.

It's like I said before, if your show's been on anywhere near long enough to be canceled at your network's whim & without advance warning to the showrunners & other "creatives", don't even think about putting a major cliffhanger, which is possibly never to be resolved, in the last show of a season. All it'll do is piss off at least some of the loyal viewers, if not the showrunners & "creatives" as well.

I would add if your show is on the bubble in ratings, don't do  it either.

I was just reading that apparently Scorpion had the same thing happen to their show as happened to Las Vegas, Lucifer, & who knows how many other TV shows before them: They put a cliffhanger in what is now Scorpion's series, not just season, finale, thinking they were gonna be back this coming season to resolve it (though I don't know if it's as big as it sounds like the 1 in Lucifer supposedly is)... & now we have another TV series cliffhanger which looks like it will never be resolved for the fans/viewers to see thanks to the CBS network cancellation ax. So yeah, season ending cliffhangers aren't all they're cracked up to be anymore because now, more than ever, it seems like there's a better chance your cliffhanger will never be resolved to the fans'/viewer's satisfaction because your ratings over that most recent season were just low enough that the network decided to pull the plug on your show instead of another show, perhaps equally deserving of the ax as yours.

New NBC Show Descriptions:

2018-19 SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

NEW COMEDIES

ABBY’S — From the producers of “The Good Place” comes a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard is the opposite of everything annoying about today’s party scene. There are rules at Abby’s: no cell phones (not even to “look something up”), earning a seat at the bar takes time and losing a challenge means drinking a limey, sugary “not-beer” drink. As the oddball cast of regulars will tell you, hanging out at Abby’s is a coveted honor. But once you’re in, you’re family. The cast includes Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn. Josh Malmuth will write and executive produce. Pamela Fryman will direct and executive produce the pilot. Michael Schur and David Miner also executive produce. “Abby’s” is produced by Universal Television, Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment.

I FEEL BAD — Emet is the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter. OK, she’s not perfect. In fact, she’s just figuring it out like the rest of us. Sure, she feels bad when she has a sexy dream about someone other than her husband, or when she pretends not to know her kids when they misbehave in public, or when she uses her staff to help solve personal problems. But that’s OK, right? Nobody can have it all and do it perfectly. From executive producer Amy Poehler comes a modern comedy about being perfectly OK with being imperfect. The cast includes Sarayu Blue, Paul Adelstein, Aisling Bea, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton and James Buckley. Aseem Batra will write and executive produce. Julie Anne Robinson will direct and executive produce the pilot. Amy Poehler, Dave Becky and Josh Maurer also executive produce. “I Feel Bad” is produced by Universal Television, Paper Kite Productions, CannyLads Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

NEW DRAMAS

THE ENEMY WITHIN — In this fast-paced, spy-hunting thriller, Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) is a brilliant former CIA operative, now known as the most notorious traitor in American history serving life in a Supermax prison. Against every fiber of his being but with nowhere else to turn, FBI Agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) enlists Shepherd to help track down a fiercely dangerous and elusive criminal she knows all too well. For Keaton, it’s not easy to trust the woman who cost him so much. While Shepherd and Keaton have different motivations for bringing the enemy to justice, they both know that to catch a spy… they must think like one. The cast includes Jennifer Carpenter, Morris Chestnut, Raza Jaffrey and Kelli Garner. Ken Woodruff will write and executive produce. Mark Pellington will direct and executive produce the pilot. Vernon Sanders also executive produces. “The Enemy Within” is produced by Universal Television.

THE INBETWEEN — Cassie Bishop was born with a gift, though she may call it a curse. She can see and communicate with the dead, helping them with their unresolved problems … whether she likes it or not. When her longtime friend Det. Tom Hackett and his new partner, former FBI Agent Damien Asante, need help solving a darkly puzzling murder, Cassie agrees to use her abilities. Despite her reluctance, she may have found a way to keep her demons at bay, all while solving some of the city’s most challenging cases. From writer/executive producer Moira Kirland (“Castle,” “Madam Secretary”) comes this suspenseful, new character-driven procedural drama. The cast includes Harriet Dyer, Anne-Marie Johnson, Cindy Luna, Chad James Buchanan and Paul Blackthorne. Moira Kirland will write and executive produce. Charlotte Sieling will direct and executive produce the pilot. David Heyman and Nancy Cotton also executive produce. “The InBetween” is produced by Universal Television, NBCU International Television Studio and Heyday Television.

MANIFEST — When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Yet in the span of those few hours, the world had aged five years and their friends, families and colleagues, after mourning their loss, had given up hope and moved on. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible. From Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke comes an emotionally rich, unexpected journey into a world grounded in hope, heart and destiny. The cast includes Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina and Parveen Kaur. Jeff Rake will write and executive produce. David Frankel will direct and executive produce the pilot. Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke also executive produce. “Manifest” is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Compari Entertainment.

NEW AMSTERDAM — Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital — the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof — and return it to the glory that put it on the map. The cast includes Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine. David Schulner will write and executive produce. Kate Dennis will direct and executive produce the pilot. Peter Horton also executive produces. Dr. Eric Manheimer will produce. “New Amsterdam” is produced by Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah.

THE VILLAGE — Welcome to the Village, an apartment building in Brooklyn that appears like any other from the outside but is quite unique inside. The people who reside here have built a bonded family of friends and neighbors. Sarah’s a nurse and single mom raising a creative teen; Gabe’s a young law student who got a much older and unexpected roommate; Ava must secure the future of her young, U.S.-born son when ICE comes knocking; Nick’s a veteran who’s returned from war; and the heart and soul of the building, Ron and Patricia, have captivating tales all their own. These are the hopeful, heartwarming and challenging stories of life that prove family is everything — even if it’s the one you make with the people around you. The cast includes Moran Atias, Dominic Chianese, Warren Christie, Frankie Faison, Jerod Haynes, Daren Kagasoff, Michaela McManus, Lorraine Toussaint and Grace Van Dien. Mike Daniels will write and executive produce. Minkie Spiro will direct and executive produce the pilot. Jessica Rhoades also executive produces. “The Village” is produced by Universal Television and 6107 Productions.

Trailers for Fall shows:

I’m surprised they’re keeping the name New Amsterdam. Not only is it a bad name for a medical drama, it was already a supernatural show starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was about to say hard pass and then I saw that Freema Agyeman is in it. I'll also check out the one set in the bar but a pass to the rest.

Is it just me or have there been so very many shows about people disappearing and reappearing in the last five years or so?

I'm burned out on shows about mysteriously returned missing people, be they returning from the dead or from being snatched by aliens or just not coming back after ducking out for a pack of cigarettes 20 years ago. After the return(s), it always becomes an excruciatingly long roll out of every character's secrets as well as sparsely supplied hints about the reasons for the disappearance until the series ends.

You have to keep your fingers crossed and hope the ratings are good enough so that the network doesn't cancel the show before everything is resolved, and we know how well that works out. Or too often, not.
