S01.E03: Chainsaw

This show makes me feel old because they have Eddie and Cordelia as parents of college-aged children!

I did love the BSB scene, that was hilarious! I'm just watching this show as nothing makes sense and it's completely absurd which makes it enjoyable to watch.

I also liked the sign in the background for days a Kappa hasn't been murdered.

Maybe it's because I watched this episode on Hulu, but this episode just flew on by for me.

The college dropping the Red Devil mascot in response to the murders was the most senseable thing they've done thus far, which of course made the new one a target.

I also love that the British Dickie Dollar Frat boy's name is Earl Gray.

My criteria for a show - does it amuse me?  This show amuses me and my inner 12 year old girl.

This show amuses me more then any other NEW show I have seen.  Maybe I have gotten old and my tastes have changed.    I always did like RM (The first two season of American Horror Story are damn near masterpieces of horror unless tonal consistency is a requirement for you)   Like AHS, Scream Queens can jump influences at a dizzying pace.  Sometimes it works.  Sometimes it doesn't.   However this show amuses that little kid in me that loves horror and loves campy dark and even bitter biting humor.  Hell watching a bunch of frat boys basically chasing down the Red Devil while Back Street played in the background was straight out of Glee for god sake,

I'm surprised that Chanel (Emma Roberts) is considered a weak link. I think she's deliciously evil and vapid, much like Regina in Mean Girls. There's no reason for her to be such a bitch, esp to her supposed friends, other than she can. I think she's doing a great job in the role.

Throw in a psychotic killer(s), ridiculous violence and stupid stereotypes and you gotcherself a hoot. I love the disgustingly creative ways the killer is doing his business - decapitating an ice cream cone and death by disarmament. I hope each week is some new weapon and a more bizarre death.

Not everybody does.  Check out Lily Sparks Review over at Tv.com.    2nd page she commends Emma Roberts on her acting in both this and Coven.    I think Emma Roberts is doing a great job.  I actually like her more then the girl who is playing the "good girl".    I am loving Chanel #1.

I'm caught up now, and still extremely bored with the Chanels. They're not entertaining, and don't create the energy within the show to be compelling. I'd watch a show about Chad and his BSB's, Denise and Hester though, because the acting there is not only committed but also able to hit the right notes. I intended to give it a couple more episodes but I may be out after this one.

That's the way I feel. It has to make sense in the universe of the show. Here it seems that the writers went through a bunch of cult classic 'mean girl' movies and are dying (pun intended) to drop in references in each episode.

I loved Hester's makeover, but I'm a sucker for makeover shows. It could be home makeovers, beauty makeovers, etc. I don't care. :D

I'm assuming this school is in the LA area since they were easily able to drive to Chanel 2's Bel Air house and the way the parents talked, it was easy for her to come home and visit.

I swore they said they Chanel#2 went home to CA, but I may have misheard.

That line by Grace's dad about Texas Chainsaw Massacre was taken almost verbatim from a movie called Summer School.

Yes! Awesome movie!!

Definitely agree.  I feel like a show centered around Chad and his frat would work better.

The Chanels, Grace and Keke aren't really doing it for me and they are main characters.

I wonder if this show is going to have various different mascots each episode. That all end up being killed. That might actually be funny.

Given the lack of menace of the Red Devil, I was pretty certain that the serial killer was going to swap over to Coney and we'd get at least one death by ice cream cone (but not as victim) and then they'd just have the killer as different mascots for the rest of the season until they found one demeaning enough to curb the murderous impulses.

So based on the tweets being flashed on Grace's phone, the Red Devil is tweeting photos of Chanel 2's dead body, right?

I actually really like this show despite it being very messy. The only big boring flaw for me in this show is the 2 very very very very very very very very boring "leads" Grace the boring pretty blonde girl who is compelled to uncover all the secrets and the boring dorky barista guy who name I forgot who has a "past" who thinks hes much hotter than he actually is. Literally they're the Pierce's of this show get rid of them and give me more Emma Roberts and Lea Michelle scenes please!!

No you didn't, but that was followed by Chanel saying she had meningitis and died after she left.

Niecy Nash is killing me. In a good way.

That first scene with Abigail Breslin talking about being double-teamed by twin golfers was way too desperate for me. Like, I get it, it's a Ryan Murphy show, but it just seemed like a desperate attempt to see how shocking they could be with their dialogue. The writers could stand to re-watch a few John Waters films if they're trying to do satire in a smarter way.

That being said, the show is still making me laugh. The Backstreet Boys montage was hilarious, as were all the scenes with Jamie Lee Curtis and Nasim Pedrad together. Gigi is becoming my favorite character, to the point that I didn't want her to get killed.

Niecy Nash, however, is absolutely STEALING this show. "Hashtag cahoots!"

Also worth noting that "Scream" also had a scene where the killer is inexplicably stalking the girls at a convenience store in the middle of the day.

Like AHS, Scream Queens can jump influences at a dizzying pace.  Sometimes it works.  Sometimes it doesn't.

I think the reason the reviews were so mixed was how much you can put up with what grates to get to what's good.  It's like the stereotype of bipolar disorder (not what bipolar actually IS, but the stereotype of sudden up and down moments.)  The callbacks, for instance, take you out of the moment, but if you can get back in fast enough, you might be rewarded with something else.

What bothers me is the lost opportunities for humor--but they might NOT want to make it too light.  The example that occurred to me was that they could have done chain-saw puns (wow, what Skil; they brought the wrong Remington (pull out a shotgun), etc.)  But that might have been a product placement issue, or it might be they didn't want to go there.  Or I like chain-saw puns more than most people.  Take your pick.

Bringing baseball bats to someone you know has a chain saw, when you also have golf clubs you've sparred with, is beyond the horror-stupid trope that the Scary Movie franchise parodied and all the way to regular stupid.

Is his name really Earl Gray?  I thought that was just Chad making a joke because he is English.  Either way hilarious.

Chanel number 2 does indeed live in California, Bell-Air to be exact.  So we know that the college is set just outside of California in order for them to make a realistic road trip there and back within a short amount of time.

Billie Lourd's headphone/ear muffs make me think of her mother's Princess Leia's hairdo every time I see them.  Intentional maybe?

It's either a nod to her mom or we'll find out that she has crazy ears or something in a later ep.

I noticed the similarity, too. Also saw on the Scream Queens Facebook page that Hester's last name is apparently Ulrich. Pretty uncommon last name, so wondering if that's meant to be a nod to the actor who played Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Or maybe I've just watched the Scream movies one too many times ;).

Does anyone know where the scene of Chanel 2/Sonia's parents' house was filmed? Here's the Kappa house: http://nola.curbed.com/archives/2015/09/28/kappa-house-scream-queens-location.phpI love real estate porn. :D

Someone on the comments at AV Club (or was it Gawker?) said they live across the street and it's very common for filming ... they also used it as the governor's mansion in True Detective.

Which means all I can tell you is that it's somewhere in Louisiana.

This is random, but since the university is in Southern California it seems like all the characters are wearing a ton of clothes.  It is August/September and they are all in these long sleeve/long pants layered ensembles from what I remember.

It can get fairly cool at night in certain parts of Southern California.

If they're in Louisiana taping this, I bet they were sweating their asses off, though. August is hot and humid, no matter what time.

I enjoyed the episode.

Random thoughts--

I totally think that Chanel #2's mom fucked Chad too.

When Chanel #2 said that she was calling her mom because she wanted to go home I got the impression that they were close but the conversation with the mom didn't really leave that impression. Plus the way she talked about Chad was weird. I also find it hard to believe that he wrote that letter.

I wish they'd been holding golf clubs and croquet mallets.

They're trying to make it so obvious that the Jamie character is in on it that I feel like it has to be misdirection and she's really innocents.

I barely blinked at the three way line. I still think Chanel #5 is in on it. There might even be three killers.

Link to comment

I'm not sure how I feel about this show, but I'm still watching, so I guess I like it enough.

I find that I actually really like Chanel #3.

Am I the only one who thinks Red Devil (or one of the killers) had to have been in the Film Studies class because of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre scene, then followed by Red Devil killing Coney with a chainsaw? So my bets are still on Gigi, seeing as she randomly appeared halfway through that scene.

Everybody loves Chad, clearly. I'm laughing.

I actually hope that Grace continues to accuse everyone of being the killer. That way, it doesn't automatically eliminate subjects.

The Backstreet scene was hilarious.

I agree that I want Hester to still have the neckbrace. It makes her unique.

Yeah, Keke and Niecy were definitely out-sassing one another. It got kind of annoying after a while. Ryan Murphy, the black woman doesn't have to be sassy. Seriously. But I like the character of Denise. Her, Gigi, Boone, Chad and Chanel #3 are my favourites who I don't want dead.

Gigi and Wes are cute, I'll admit.

Well, we know Boone's probably one of the Red Devils. I think there could actually be two more, but who knows?

I just feel like this show has no idea what it wants to be.

A Mystery?

A Satire?

A Campfest?

An actual story with a plot and characters?

I feel like its close to finding its tone, but its not quite there yet.

Still, I cannot say that I don't enjoy watching it.

How could Gigi be the killer? The Red Devil attacked her at the end, and I didn't get the vibe that it was a setup attack to make her look innocent (like Ghostface "stabbing" Billy in front of Sidney in Scream); she was visibly terrified, the RD clearly was trying to get her with the chainsaw, and until Wes showed up, there was no one else in the room to witness the attack. If anything, I think that scene made it seem like Wes is in on it since the RD just cut his arm and didn't even try to finish him off even though he/she easily could have (though that could have been an intentional red herring, like Derek's arm injury in Scream 2). Plus, Wes was really quick to implicate Cathy, when it's unlikely that she could have gotten upstairs and then back downstairs so quickly. Who knows, though. I love that this show has so many potential suspects.

It's so hard for me to accept Charisma Carpenter as a mom to a college girl. Not because she's a bad actress or anything, but because I can only see Cordelia whenever I look at her. Speaking of, Cordy would have been a great Chanel, especially as the character was on Buffy and the first two seasons of Angel. Also, CC is still gorgeous...out of all the actors from those shows, I think she's aging the best by far.

Another solid episode. I've loved all of them so far. I was hoping to get more info on Boone, but hopefully that will come soon.

I laughed when after successfully driving GiGi out of the room with her "white noise machine" Jamie Lee's character was instantly out of bed and pushing hers over to GiGi's.

I find it diverting and funny enough that I'll keep watching.

Some of the name and costume homages to previous projects and stars makes me think that everything means something, either as an homage or related to the mystery. Is the name Gigi really a fake, meaning the initials G. G.? Will Chad be killed in a noose, a la a hanging chad? There's no end to it.

I do like that JLC's character's last name is Munsch, clearly an homage to Edvard Munch, painter of The Scream.

I had no idea there was a "ghetto code" , but apparently Red Devil did and he took it out in the big BSB death scene!!!  LOL I love this campy show!  It may not be the best show around, but for the hour I watch it, I am very entertained.    All the chainsaw stuff was super funny, and I love Jaime Lee Curtis in this

I must say... for whatever reason, this show is working for me!    It's silly.  It's outrageous.  It's preposterous.  The scenarios are ridiculous and the dialogue is surprisingly racy for a non-cable network (I am constantly saying to myself, "Wow!  They can say THAT on a major network?").  But it is a fun ride that I am enjoying.

Ryan Murphy and company have a way of bringing out the best in their veteran actors, and Jamie Lee Curtis is no exception -- her character is totally inappropriate, but I love her!

Other standouts for me include:  Niecy Nash, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Nick Jonas, Glen Powell and Oliver Hudson.  Again, the situations they get into are crazy and probably don't make a lot of sense, but they are endlessly amusing to me.  I even thought the whole Coney thing was hilarious.

And, to top it off, there are twists thrown in to the mystery, so there are surprises and developments to keep me guessing.  I like it all, and I am curious to see what Season 2 will be like (if there is one), as it would have a whole new story and setting, right (just like AHS)?

I don't know how I feel about this show. I don't really like it, but I am going to continue watching it.

Zayday reminds me way too much of Regina Hall in Scary Movie, it's actually kinda icky. JLC's character is dumb.

Ear Muffs is way too young to be Manson's daughter and it bugs me that Asian Lesbian didn't tell her that. Though knowing things about Carrie Fisher, I guess it's possible with a time machine. (I watched this while tipsy, maybe I missed the impossibility being brought up.)

I do love Chad. He's so stupid terrible. I loved Coney's interlude. It was fun. I also both like and am annoyed by Grace being so naive in a purposeful, stupid way.

And I like GiGi! She's got to be the dark haired girl with the 90's bathtub baby right?

I only made it through the first 15 minutes of the two-hour premiere.  It felt like the television equivalent of chugging a Red Bull and I just wasn't in the mood.

Watching this episode, I seemed to be pretty much up to speed on the important plot points, in spite of missing the last couple or 105 minutes.  Go figure.

But if that girl with the fuzzy muffin earphones is Princess Leia's daughter, they have bought themselves another week with me, because that is hysterical!

They explained her mother (her fictional mother not Carrie Fisher)  had conjugal visit with Manson.  Men can father children  even when they are very old.

Someone on staff has a really great thesaurus because I don't think I've heard that many different variants of words used to describe female anatomy on one hour of TV in a long time.( Trim, Box, Gash...)

I'm assuming that as well.

This show is sort of insane, I'm wondering what is going to happen when we all know who the Red Devil is. I can't work out how it can have a second season. Or a decent one at least.

I have to admit, I love this show for far. It's goofy and funny and irreverent. It's a reminder of the best parts of AHS:Coven for me, which I liked. I wasn't sure how I would feel about this show - I don't really like gore and am home alone a lot so I don't like to watch scary stuff, but so far the tone and presentation is perfect. And I LOVE Niecy Nash. She is a gem.

If Gigi is the dark haired girl from the 90's flashback than are she and Munch "pretending" not to know one another since Munch helped with the cover up.  Wouldn't we have gotten some clue of them making a reference to what they did 20 years ago.

The "See you next Tuesday" bit made me laugh too.  It was definitely intentional, but I think that people will either get it or not get it.  If they don't know what the 'joke' is about that line, then they wouldn't have found it hilarious when he said it.

The line could have easily been "See you on Tuesday," or "See you Tuesday," or "We'll continue this discussion on Tuesday."  Just the fact that it was "See you next Tuesday" is what was hilarious.  And that was actually one of the tamer bits of dialogue in the show!  Lol.  They are pushing the envelope every minute on that show.

At this point, 3 episodes in, the only reasons to keep watching are Jamie Lee Curtis, Niecey Nash and Oliver Hudson. It's going to be a struggle to make it through the season.

Did love seeing Charisma Carpenter though. So the killer(s) are posing Chanel #2 ala Weekend at Bernie's?

Is it just me, or are other people waiting for Chad to come out?
