S22.E04: The Girl Who Has a Close Shave

Recommended Posts

I think those vets deserve another Purple Heart each for having to endure those photo shoots! What was the point of them anyway? There were a couple of Vogue shoots awhile back that placed models in full couture amidst soldiers and sports figures, and they were memorable because the contrast was what was emphasized. Nothing made sense about these. On top of that, if you are going to do makeovers, why not do the shoot afterward so the judging is more in line with the model that you are currently assessing? That said, Stefano took weak pictures form what we've seen, and his makeover would not have made a difference, AND he failed to hook up with any model in the house or develop a specific enemy, so he was of no use to the show. Hopefully next week will be better.

Yeah, I was somewhat irritated when Tyra said she couldn't see past Ashley's hair in her picture. They could have styled her hair so that it was slicked down. OR YOU COULD HAVE GIVEN HER A FUCKING MAKEOVER BEFORE THE PHOTOSHOOT. Geez, Tyra. You really are hard to please.

Yu must have made up for his niceness in previous episodes by upping the level of bitchiness this week. It was nice to see him calling out Devin's lack of success.

Carol Brady is the only woman who should be rocking a mullet. They should've given Ava a pixie.

Hey, did y'all know Nyle is deaf? I want him to get a talking head where he shares his love of basketball, Cabbage Patch dolls, or anything that isn't be being deaf. He and Alex looked flirty together.

Stefano is wannabe Zoolander.

Courtney's hair looks like it'll fade to green. After 21 cycles, you'd think the stylists and/or production would know there is no maintenance of the new looks.

Mamé's hair looks like a pain to maintain due to the sheer amount of it. Ashley's too because a straight hairstyle for curly hair never looks the same when the hair is curly.

Lacey's attitude was great. Hadassah's was not. Tyra is crazy but Jay Alexander I'd trust. Worst case H is relegated to doing a combover.

And on a personal note, eff you, Mikey. There is nothing wrong with nerdy, curly, or glasses.

I had to watch the show on demand before commenting.  I agree with Stefano's boot.  He was annoying.

Tyra kept commenting on the hair in the photos.  Perhaps you could have had the photo shoot after the makeovers?  Sigh.

Bello really didn't need an extra pound of hair. Devin looked better. Ashley now looks like Tyra.  The mullet should be outlawed immediately.  I figured that they didn't shave Mikey because then he'd look like Dustin.   Courtney would have benefited from a darker color.

Nyle is so handsome in person, but so dead in the photos! The camera does not love him at all.

Hadassah girl. You don't really look that different from before the shave.  You do know that you could just throw your hair on that side to hide the shave, right?

The question Courtney was asked, IIRC, was not "how long has it been since you brushed your teeth?" but "what's the longest you've gone without brushing your teeth?"  I mean, it's still not great to know she's had times where she's gone longer than a day or two without brushing, but it's not quite as horrific as if she at that moment could not think back to the most recent toothbrushing.

Yeah, but part of her answer was, "Sometimes I just forget," and when she couldn't give them an answer for how long she's gone without brushing, that would suggest several days with no recollection to the last time. So, same difference. I still really hope this was embellished on for "comedy."

Hadassah's photo this week is possibly the worst in ANTM history, right up there with Lluvy's dead fish one from cycle 4. Hadassah's face was so blurry and she looked like she was literally falling over with her eyes half closed. Both her and Stefano deserved to go home tonight. Yes Stefano is a tool and serves him right for getting the Kate Gosselin hairdo before being eliminated. Tyra is definitely not done torturing Hadassah like she did with C3 Kellie.

Did Ramon quit? Why did Nyle need to use his phone to translate his sign language this week? He is very handsome but his face is so dead on-camera. Wish he is a better poser.

Yeah I agree with the poster upthread who said Courtney looks like the Taryn Manning character from "Orange is the new black". Her makeover is hideous and her teeth are just eeeew! She needs to get braces instead of just whitening them.

Devin actually looks better with his shaved head compared to his Bozo the clown hairdo before the makeover. I think he is very striking now and provided he tones down the arched eyebrows and the finger on the lips pose, he might turn out to be a contender after all.

Bello can get off my TV screen anytime now. He is absolutely annoying and still looks like a cross between Prince and Stacey Dash to me.

Mame is absolutely gorgeous. She is so regal too and reminds me of C10 Fatima. I am rooting for her to win.

She also doesn't know what "half of her f*cking head" is either... because looks like they shaved less than a 1/3 of her head. And I'm not even sure the word "shaved" is accurate. The one side just looked like it was shorter and slicked back. I wore a similar style 25 years ago (no weave)... hardly the great innovative style I'm sure Tyra was trying to create. .. and seriously much ado about nothing.

Hadassah's photo this week is possibly the worst in ANTM history . . .

I agree! Stefano is a prick, but he is exactly the right size to be a male model and his worst photos aren't bad at all. I actually thought that his bad attitude would take him a lot farther in the competition. It amazed me when the judges kept him over Hadassah and the twelve other contestants who won't get any work after they're eliminated. Or win.

Also, while I am sure living with Devin would drive me up one wall and down the next, and I don't think he's conventionally good looking at all, he is striking and takes good pictures and props to him for not freaking out TOO much over losing the hair ... and he looks MUCH better now.

Had he freak out, it'd be all BS for the show because it's not like he never had a shave head. 2/3 of his portfolio here http://www.lookmodelagency.com/portfolio.aspx?nav=1&subnav=12&ltr=all&link=1&sexid=1&size=medium&modelid=796891&subid=10786&mainsubid=10786is with really little hair. Makeover day, my favorite and least favorite part of the season. I love it because of the drama, I hate it because it continues to prove what an utter farce the American franchise of this show remains.

Ava: A mullet?!!!! Even during the mullet's peak, the models of the period didn't wear mullets. Jerry Hall, Lauren Hutton, Janice Dickinson, Paulina Porizkova, Brooke Shields, Carol Alt didn't have mullets. Now their hair might have been stylized to look that way at times, but the point is to have versatility. THe pieces in the front and back aren;t even long enough to style differently. Fashion mullet my ass.

Bello: So you give someone who is already too short to be a viable top male model longer hair that emphasizes his lack of height even more? That seemed like a good idea?

Mamé: Fine, added some hair no real change and didn't need it.

Justin: Fine, trimmed some hair, no real change and didn't need it.

Mikey: See above.

Dustin: See above.

Nyle: See above. Also he's super attractive, but not modelesque. At all.

Devin: I would have liked to see his hair the same length in black or dark brown, but the total shave is fine.

Hadassah: I was pissed at the makeover more than Hadassah, she SHOULD have been kicking and screaming. What top model, especially black model, today has a shave side of the head? Chanel? Jourdan? Joan? Aya? Malaika, Ajak? Who? That style was for 2012 pop stars and R&B divas. There's really no consideration but humiliation.

Ashley: This was an actual improvement. I guess they can only get it wrong so many times.

Lacey: Why doesn't anyone want these girls to have versatility? A beginning model can't have a signature cut. Not too early in the game. Folks love to say "What if you needed to do so for a [insert high fashion brand] campaign?" "Linda Evangelista did it." People seem to forget that you get payid tens of thousands of dollars for campaigns which is a much better incentive than a reality show competition. Many also seem to forget that when Linda cut her hair for Peter Lindbergh she was cut from maybe 20 shows as a result, and by then she had already been quite reasonably successful.

Courtney: The cut is terrible, the color is terrible, but somehow better than I thought it would be.

Stefano: Looked a damn fool. Should have been left alone.

At least we got to see Tyra give Stefano that Kate Gosselin 'do before he got the boot. Because that? Is hilarious.

First thing I thought the instant I saw it too. Tyra went and gave him the Gosselin swoop bang. Poor thing.

I don't think I'll bother with the photos, they were mostly terrible and I've said more than my share. Anyway, when they're mostly terrible I blame the photographer and the creative/artistic director whoever is choosing the photographs.

I encourage everyone to watch AusNTM now that seasons 1-7 are on Hulu. The odd numbered seasons are my favorites (though I love six too), they know how to pick a working model.

That show puts me to sleep,

I was disapointed Stefano was let go instead of Dustin, although happy Hadassah got to stay, she's tv gold.

I only watch "Makeover Day," so I don't know their personalities.  And from this thread, I can tell Stephano's supposed to be a devil and Mame an angel.

But. . .the way she went charging up to him and started shouting about "I'm NEXT!  WHAT, I'm not allowed to go get something to EAT?!" was extremely annoying.  Umm, no, the way "lines" usually work, I'd give the edge to the guy actually standing in place, waiting.

Now I might stick around to see what happens to that massive pile of hair in a week or two.  Same with Banjo.  Maintaining so much hair in post-salon glory is a full time job.

Dustin and Justin's makeovers make them look a /lot/ younger than they used to. Which admittedly is what a modeling makeover should do, since the preference is to look waaay younger than you are. But both of them look like they just stepped right out of some kind of Barely Legal porn set.

Hopefully after ANTM Ava, Bello, Courtney all made some changes to their hair

I imagine that after they left the show and were laughed out of every possible "modeling" agency, they all enrolled in Trade School.  Dental Hygienist for Courtney, Cosmetology for Ava and Auto Mechanic for Bello.  (So he can continue to stay as greasy looking as possible.)

Glad Nyle is still around and that he seems to have a level head. It also just hit me that he's the beautiful, beautiful love child of Henrik Lundqvist (Goalie, New York Rangers) and Colin O'Donoghue (Captain Hook, Once Upon a Time) and I had to share.

Idk, I don't see King Henrik in Nyle, aside from the fact that both are gorgeous men with dark hair and blue eyes. Captain Hook though, pretty spot on :) He also reminds me of someone else that I can't figure out yet, if I do, I'll come back and post it :)

When Courtney made the comment about forgetting when the last time she brushed her teeth was, I prayed to the reality TV gods that it was producer created and she doesn't actually not brush her teeth. I kind of thought that if she doesn't brush her teeth, wouldn't she have a whole other slew of dental problems besides just having the Ugliest Teeth Ever? Cavities, gum disease, etc. I would also think the dentist they brought in would have needed to do something about all that before putting potent whitening gel in her mouth, but I'm no dentist. I will say though that I found myself contemplating the mechanics of flossing those teeth the first time I saw Courtney. It wouldn't be flossing so much as rubbing some string against the side of each tooth, cause you could fit a Mack truck in there. But if girl doesn't brush, she's probably never heard of dental floss.

good oral health genes sometimes are wasted on people like that lol

I was baffled when Tyra just whitened her teeth. That protruding overbite! reminded me of Lidsey Lohan character's Halloween costume in Mean Girls. Super white in your face ugly teeth. Is Tyra trying to make "fetch" happen? (I had to lol) it's one thing to claim that tooth gap is "signature look" but that? I'm sorry, that is just plain ugly, not "model ugly"

Oh, Nyle. If I was about 15 years younger and single...

is he single? would someone kindly point me towards the end of the line? thanks.

thanks, i'll check it out after marathoning through Suits :)

also as much as I love Nyle, his comment about hair vs deafness kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I completely agree with his point, it's stupid to cry over hair, but I hate it when people do that kind of comparison in first person. Sounds weird to me, too riteous, cocky, even if that's not the intention. I'd rather he would have kept his "deaf card" out of it (someone else could have used it, sitting next to him). I think correct way for him would have been to juxtapose hair to the vets' prosthetics.

Let me get this out of the way first and I'll try to keep it short and sweet: What folks call "black" hair is actually Afro-textured hair. Not all black people have it. Many, though, have it or something close to it. (Look at Mame's hair before she got the new weave.) This texture grows at approximately the same rate as every other texture. The difference is that often you can't see the growth because of shrinkage. Before I got my most recent haircut, my hair was about 12 inches long but if I wet it and let it air-dry it would shrink to between 2-4 inches.

Also, for a fair number of us, the longer this hair gets, the more fragile it gets, which means it's more prone to knotting and breakage. I suspect Devin, being a working model and all (*snort*), has had a lot done to his hair and incurred a lot of breakage as a result. Meanwhile, I do very little to my hair -- no color, no combs or brushes, mostly air-drying -- and I don't get a lot of breakage. Also, I don't give a shit what other races do to their hair...except when we're talking about ANTM hamsters, of course...and on that note:

Wheeee! It's makeover time! :) Anybody else notice how many of the talking head segments showed them wearing hats?

  • Thank you, Tyra, for not messing with my boyfriends Justin and Nyle too much.
  • Neither Ashley nor Lacey have a true bowl cut IMO. Ashley's is too short in the back and Lacey's is too long in the back. I do think Lacey should have gotten the "Ty-Ty chop" instead of Ashley. She has great bone structure and could have rocked it. Ashley's natural curls could look great with that cut, or they could be a hot mess.
  • Stefano...you know what, I don't care, he's gone.
  • Whatever color that is on Courtney's head, it's not gray. I'm not sure what it is...greige, maybe? Either way, it's not a good look.
  • All of a sudden Dustin's looking good to me. Too bad he won't be around much longer.
  • I'm going to go out on a limb and say I actually like Ava's mullet. I don't think she looks like Markie Post or Carol Brady...she reminds me more of a character on General Hospital way back in the day. I don't remember her name but her hair was fine-textured, sort of like Ava's.
  • Bello and Mikey...you know what, I don't care. Hopefully they'll both be gone soon.
  • Devin doesn't look half bad with short hair. Still don't like him though...he can miss me with that "Birds of Paradise" shit...
  • Mame already had too much weave to begin with and now they've given her the full Diana Ross. She's still gorgeous but she doesn't need all that hair.
  • Last and absolutely least...Hadassah, you have NO BUSINESS BEING ON THIS SHOW. If you're that stuck on looking like Chocolate Barbie then you need to take your ass on back to Texas and stay there. I'm sorry Tyra didn't give you the same faux-hawk she gave Justin.

All the photos were fug but Hadassah's was so blurry I was sure she was going home. Before that, though, I was sure it was Stefano. Way to psych me out, ANTM!

Also, thank you, Nyle, for bringing the realness.

Devin no longer looks ca-razy.

I sympathized with Hadassah; after all, the OBVIOUS candidate for a good hair-whacking simply got what? A trim?

I didn't understand the point of the amputee veterans. The models were told to pose in "extreme" manner, but why?

I am not sure how many "likes" we are allowed, so I had to stop giving them (I caught up on two other shows last night and wanted to save some likes for those forums), but I think I would have "liked" every post here, if I had an infinite number of "likes" (in other words, I did like every post, even if I didn't "like" it).

I really wanted them to shave Mikey's head.  Why do all guys with long hair think their long hair is great hair?  If you put Mikey's hair on a women, they would say it was stringy, messy, dirty-looking, life-less, frizzy, etc...

When they were all sitting around and Haddasah was complaining about her hair (before Nyle made his comment), I was thinking that it must be hard for him to keep up with the conversation because there are too many people and some are not in his field of vision - no matter how fast his interpreter is or how well Nyle reads lips, he must miss a lot of what is going on.  Nyle, if you are reading this, I can hear what they say and this is one instance where you should be happy to miss out (and I am talking about your time in the house with these people, not just this one conversation).

And while I am sending messages to the hamsters, let me say - Stefano, I can understand why you love your family so much.  I am sure, based on what I have seen from you, that they must have constantly complimented you, telling you how handsome you are and how good your are at everything you do.  You probably feel that the other hamsters, the judges, etc, don't appreciate the wonder that is you.  Stefano, I am going to put this as gently as I can...Your family is a bunch of liars.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on the fact that they gave Lacey the Tootie treatment. I guess the difference is that she pulls it off better than Saleisha did, but I still had to giggle that they gave her that cut.

Didn't they call it a "chic bowl-cut"? - Now, there's an oxymoron.

I think the only reason why they posed with the disabled vets, besides letting Tyra think she is supporting the troops, is so when one of the hamsters freaks out about her make-over, they can point out that she posed with someone who lost a leg fighting for their country and she is a baby for whining about hair.  Therefore, they had to do the make-overs after the shoot, because saying "how can you complain about a haircut when you are going to pose with a disable vet tomorrow" just doesn't work as well.

This is the most unlikable and unwatchable cast that Tyra's ever managed to scrounge together. And considering there is something called "Cycle 14" out there, that is a pretty hefty accomplishment.

Everybody is either completely and utterly insane or barely exists. I guess Ashley and Nyle have made SOME positive impression due to their backstories, but they don't really look like models to me. In fact, almost everybody is either WAY too fucking weird looking or WAY too common and plain. Lacey and Justin are the only two who really strike any sort of balance, so I am rooting for a Lacey/Justin F2.

I encourage everyone to watch AusNTM now that seasons 1-7 are on Hulu. The odd numbered seasons are my favorites (though I love six too), they know how to pick a working model.

FWIW, Cycle 6 of AusNTM is far and away the greatest season of any Top Model franchise I've watched. Every single elimination, photoshoot and challenge is perfect, the cast is extremely likeable and entertaining, and the winner is amazing.

I thought this came across a little strange at first too, but part of his difficulty is that he can't express intonation or emotion in the same way he could while speaking or using his face. If it'd been me, I would've said "girl, I can't HEAR and you're sitting there complaining about your hair??" in a half-kidding-half-callout sort of way, which I don't think would have come across as self-righteous.

Tyra does need to explain why she gave Bello a short model longer hair when in C2 she gave Jenascia short hair because of her height of being 5'7". Tyra never makes any sense.

While I agree that Tyra makes no sense, comparing fashion trends from over 10 years apart has flaws. In Cycle 6 they closed Danielle's gap only to widen Chelsey's nine cycles later. Heh. Without long hair Bello is just a short dude with pretty eyes. He needs the long hair to stand out.

That's a really good point. Although the app/phone/whatever that thing is they are trying so hard to sell is great in that it helps him communicate, communication is much more than the words we say. As he said, he is at a huge disadvantage because he is basically speaking a foreign language. From what little research I did as a fan of Switched at Birth, it seems that ALS is a very different language, the way they phrase things is different, and when signing, he can make facial expressions and use his body to express anger/excitement/sarcasm etc. But with the phone it is just this monotone voice that he can't even hear, and therefore he can't really know how it even comes across to others.

I am, however, undecided on whether his deafness is a plus or a minus in this competition. A deaf contestant on Project Runway said that he felt he was lucky that he could completely tune out all the noise of the other designers and focus on his work. That's a huge plus IMO however, it has got to be frustrating when they are all talking over each other to keep up with the conversation.

I don't necessarily agree with him pulling out the deaf card in this case though. It's not like they were acting like what they were going through was worse than being deaf or an amputee or anything else. A lot of people, myself included, feel like their appearance is a reflection of who they are. I think they all moved on, but I don't begrudge anyone their venting period. Let them cry, let them get it out and then move on. Now, if they were saying something like "OMG, having my hair cut is worse than anything you have ever gone through" then he has a valid complaint. Otherwise it just felt like scolding and it's not his place to scold his peers.

I love Nyle though, he is pretty close to physical perfection for me, I love a little hair on a mans chest and the beard and piercing eyes and the whole package, so I totally give him a pass. I'm easy like that. :)

The makeovers were, quite frankly, rather boring. I would have given Mikey the "Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby", Hadassah the "peed on snow blonde" with matching bleached eyebrows, Bello the "Tootie" with a beard weave, Courtney the "shaved bald" and made her tooth gap wider, Devin the "long weave down to the buttocks" with one side black and the other side blonde, and Stefano the "Ronald McDonald red Afro weave", and told them to work though it.

Is there a petition somewhere that I can sign to put you in charge of makeovers on ANTM?

And while I am sending messages to the hamsters, let me say - Stefano, I can understand why you love your family so much.  I am sure, based on what I have seen from you, that they must have constantly complimented you, telling you how handsome you are and how good your are at everything you do.  You probably feel that the other hamsters, the judges, etc, don't appreciate the wonder that is you.  Stefano, I am going to put this as gently as I can...Your family is a bunch of liars.

I love y'all. You are my people! Throwing shade like it's sunny out here.  *still laughing*

I think that Mike looks like Jax from Sons of Anarchy (Charlie Hunam). I love the crazy makeovers and actually thought most weren't that bad for once. I did think Nyle was a bit out of line for taking them to task about hair talk. Lets face it: if you got a radical hair cut/change wouldn't you want to discuss it with your friends? People can't talk about serious things every minute of the day and these models are young people, they are going to be interested in hair, clothing, makeup.

My husband's aunt was deaf and she always talked about feeling invisible at a party or in a crowd. That is because conversations move so fast and someone would have to take the time to slow done to include her. I hope Nyle can find a way to be more included in the group.

I still hate Kelly and her critique's about not interacting with the background soldiers drove me nuts; they were told to interact with the one solider they were paired with. I wish they could just blurt out that it wasn' t the assignment, but Kelly is pretty vindictive so you have to smile and say nothing with her.

Please, I would love someone to go all Louise on Kelly and just talk back. Whatever Kelly Cutrone. I just flat out don't like Kelly bring back Nigel who actually gives out good critiques without sounding like a douche.

Cut off stupid mikes hair for goodness sakes. He is a creep and his hair makes it worse. A jax from SOA cut for him would be nice.

Bello, just get off my TV.

Devin looked great with his hair gone. Too bad he is a freak.

I loved the mullet. She rocks it. And I hate them.

Bowl cut was cute. Loved the color.

Hadassah Hadassah Hadassah. Quit being a baby. They should have cut the rest of her hair shorter. Just passed the shoulder. It would look better. I cut both sides of my hair like that after all and I loved it. I could wear my hair down for work and up for freak. :)

Didn't Kelly say that she knows ASL? That America will love her for that?

Why not reach out to Nyle and critique him in his language? Tyra attempted to do similar thing with Marjorie in French. (attempted is the operative word LOL). I'm sure it'll go a long way in him not feeling that lonely. Besides, I feel like it's judges' duty to make this guy smile as much as they can, because that smile can seriously supply power to few blocks in LA, and maybe cure diseases.

I have nothing to back this up, but I get the feeling that Kelly is one of those people who is rather insecure and doesn't have anything she was better at than anyone else she knew, so she acts like she is powerful and talks about knowing a lot of things and having a lot of experiences, but she feels deep down that she is not that good.  While I can imagine her saying she knew sign language, I don't think she will try to communicate with Nyle that way.  Besides, if she was really good enough at it, she would have showed off by now.

Note: This sort of diagnosing someone that you don't know and when you don't have any sort of psychology training other than that one class in college is known at "Armchair Psychology."  However, I do not watch this show while sitting in an armchair, I sit on the couch. Therefore, I am exhibiting "Couch Psychology" and, since the classic stereotype of a psychiatrist includes a couch in his office, I feel that Couch Psychology is much more accurate than Armchair Psychology.

Brilliant. How do you feel about "Bed Psychology"? Because I am that slob who watches ANTM in bed. With ice cream. And wine.

Well, it seems more Freudian that any of the other furniture psychologies.

However, "Bed Psychology" sounds very close to "Bad Psychology" - especially after drinking wine (I mean that literally).

I respectfully disagree. Even on his best day, Mikey's no Charlie Hunham.

Bello, just get off my TV.

And my planet, while he's at it-and take Devin, Hadassah, Mikey, Courtney & her busted grill with him.

Love Nyle. He's an oasis of calm in a desert of crazy. A very hot oasis.
